Nationwide Layoff Watch: Bryan Cave’s Official Statement
Earlier today, we reported that Bryan Cave laid off 58 attorneys.
The firm just released a statement with the official numbers. In addition to the 58 attorneys, 76 staffers were also let go today. The numbers account for 5% of the firm’s attorneys and 6% of the firm’s support staff:
We have regretfully now concluded that we must reduce our attorney and staff ranks, by 58 attorneys and 76 staff. These reductions represent about 5% of our attorneys and 6% of our staff. The attorneys and staff affected have been advised of this decision.
Bryan Cave also took this opportunity to inform the survivors that salaries will be frozen for all of 2009. Previously, the firm indicated that raises would be made in April, 2009.

BRYAN CAVE — STATEMENT — LAYOFFS AND SALARY FREEZE
As you know, the economic downturn has put enormous pressure on all businesses. The legal profession has not been immune, and we are currently facing the most difficult economic conditions most of us have ever encountered.
Over the course of the past year, we implemented a number of measures to reduce our costs. Unfortunately, the economy has continued to deteriorate, and we have concluded that further steps are necessary to adapt to this business climate.
We have regretfully now concluded that we must reduce our attorney and staff ranks, by 58 attorneys and 76 staff. These reductions represent about 5% of our attorneys and 6% of our staff. The attorneys and staff affected have been advised of this decision.
Consistent with this decision and having reviewed the continuing economic climate, we have also concluded that we will not increase salaries in 2009.
Treating each other as we do our best clients has long been at the heart of our core values and is one of the many strengths of Bryan Cave. Our commitment to each other has made this decision all the more painful. We have empathy for the employees and their families affected and will work with those employees to provide them with resources and assistance during this challenging time.
We are fortunate to have strong client relationships, strong practices and exceptional colleagues. As we work our way through this global economic downturn, we must continue to focus on our internal relationships and manage our resources carefully, and request your
on-going support in doing so. This is also a time when we must be particularly attentive to our clients’ needs and circumstances, so that we can continue to provide to them the outstanding service and excellent results they have come to expect from Bryan Cave.
I speak for the entire leadership team at Bryan Cave when I say this is among the most difficult decisions we have had to make. While we would certainly all wish not to be faced with the challenges posed by this environment, I have no doubt that together we are up to the task.
Thank you for your continued dedication.

get this old news outta here, we're tlaking about cancelled summers and rescinded 3L offers now!

EVERYBODY DANCE NOW!
How are firms like Skadden, Cleary, Davis Polk reacting to all this?
this is scaaaaaaaary
Maybe there's an obvious answer to this, so forgive me, but why is all of this happening today? Seems like a weird coincidence that all these firms dropped the ax at the same time.
Can we expect a lot more tomorrow?

8, I think it's because once 4 firms have announced layoffs, this is a great way to get lost in the static.

Man, it's a bloodbath today.
there will be more coming in the next 6 months.
I think that all of these firms planned on giving all of this bad news today. Its just way too coincidental.
This is all because these non V20 firms decided they could run with the big dogs and match starting NY salaries at 160. Now that the economy is spiraling the crapper, they obviously can't keep up. This is the cream, my friends, starting to rise.
MAKE IT STOP!!! MAKEP IT STOP!!!
The tide isn't coming in. This is just the first small swell of a tsunami which should arrive next week.
Collusion is the answer as to why so many law firms whacked people today. It is painfully obvious a stable of Managing Partners got together and came to a gentlemen's agreement to make this the day for announcing firm layoffs. Why? An individual firm won't take nearly the public relations hit it otherwise might if they were one of only a couple of firms to announce firings within a given week.
So we just went ahead and fixed the glitch.
Quinn: put a sock in it, will ya ?
5 and 9,
comments like that only confirm the FACT that Quinn attorneys are annoying d-bags. How dare you make such a comment in the midst of a discussion about people losing their jobs.
Congratulations on working with the biggest group of shit heads on the planet!
Quinn remains (the "douchiest" firm ever)
We find it's always better to fire people on a Friday. Studies have statistically shown that there's less chance of an incident if you do it at the end of the week.
Does anybody have perspective on Barnes & Thornburg out of Indianapolis? Grateful for the insights.
IT IS OFFICIAL
(NOT THAT THIS IS NEWS)
QUINN = DOUCHEBAG CENTRAL
This is the stake that'll kill WUSTL. Watch Out!
Has anybody heard anything about Mystal getting laid off?
Tomorrow will be worse.
RE: 5 and 9, I'm more offended by the "Deep Impact" reference
I gots a statement for 'em:
"The ship be sinking..."
10: i doubt that's it. it's not like firms read ATL and say hey! pick 40 names out of a hat and let's axe them before the day is done so we get lost in the static!
BRYAN Unfrozen CAVEman Lawyer is the latest Oblahma casualty.

And on the sixth day God created SKADDEN, and He saw everything He had made, and behold, it was very good.

For those asking why today, instead of tomorrow - if your firm has President's Day off on Monday, many choose to make it a four day weekend by taking off tomorrow. And no one wants to find out about a layoff via voicemail or email...
STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES --
1. PAYING TOO MUCH FOR ASSOCIATES.
2. DUMB DECISIONS ABOUT LEASES AND FIXED COSTS.
3. FAILURE TO LEAD AND MOTIVATE.
4. DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR.
ALMOST EVERY MAJOR FIRM SUFFERS FROM THESE PROBLEMS AND IT IS GOING TO COST THEM ALL. BOUTIQUE FIRMS WILL RISE FROM THE ASHES.
Vintage detached and robotic memorandum from the desk of Don Lents. Thankfully, the St. Louis partners will lead the parade to vote him out of the Chairman role this fall.
I get why you do this today instead of on Friday.
But why do this right before the President's day holiday then? Why not wait till Monday?
Did I miss the "welcome to BigLaw" memo that mentioned that February 12 is "apocalypse" day?
As somebody else... Dear sweet baby jesus, watching your Baby Einstein videos learning about shapes and colors... thank you for these billable hours on my desk. And deliver us from Count Layoffula. Amen.
To 25-- There is an article on AmLaw about B & T, B & D and Ice Miller stating how they have weathered through the storm etc... But my secretary just told me B & T and B & D were in the process, today, of firing staff?????
Did Bryan Cave even give severance? They usually give themselves a public pat on the back . . did Don drop the ball?
Bryan Cave is TTT
# 49. I am actually being considered for a staff role at Barnes & Thornburg. Or maybe I should change that to say "was." I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed, but it doesn't sound good judging by what your secretary has to say on the matter. Thanks for the information.
8,
It is likely happening today because it is the beginning of a long weekend and a firm doesn't want to be placed in the difficult position of canning someone over the phone on that started their vacation on Friday.
As for the Monday suggestion, there are numerous stats that it is much better to have layoff on a friday because it allows a person an entire weekend to adjust (i.e. drink their sorrows away) than knowing the next day they still have to show up to work.
As for why it seems like it is happening in February. Firms have likely just completed their PPP for '08 and made projections on revenue and staffing levels for '09 in the last couple of weeks so they are working on right staffing their firms right now.
I would guess you wont see anything tomorrow though that is no guarantee but will see more layoffs over the next couple of weeks.

If my post grad offer gets rescinded, I am seriously fucked.
21/24-nice
What Don Lents failed to do today is deal head-on with the problem that plagues Bryan Cave, and that is too many partners in title only who aren't business generators and can't otherwise keep their own plates full. Nearly every office of the firm is besieged with chronic under-productive partners. The leverage ratio of the firm is already shit, and just got worse today. How long until clients finally get fed up with paying partner rates for commodity boiler plate legal work that young associates or staff lawyers should be doing? But Don Lents didn't dare take a bite out of the partnership because he is worried about getting reelected to the Chairman role.
53 - Good point, especially on the PPP determinations
I heard that Epstein Becker is laying off. True?
I should not have let my grades go to shit after my 3L offer. Screwed, screwed, screwed.
27, no self-respecting WUSTL students wind up working at Bryan Cave (though many of us interview there). Heck, very few self-respecting WUSTL students stay in St. Louis. There's nothing here but the Cardinals and A-B.
Hey 61... I counted 50 WUSTL grads at Bryan Cave before I even got to "L". Just saying.
62, I said no self-respecting WUSTL grads, not no WUSTL grads...
61, 63:
See, e.g.,

BTW, thank you for playing. First, no self-respecting person goes to WUSTL. Two, the fact that you dump on your TTT, yet make yourself look prodigious, sets off anyone's douche alarm.
64, let's ignore your insults and look at the facts. The grades that you need at WUSTL to get a job at Bryan Cave can get you a Biglaw job in New York or Chicago... For most, that's an easy choice.

Can we all agree that staff "layoffs" are not important and should be ignored? As well as anyone not at a vault 5 firm.
Yeah, does anyone else find it interesting how Quinn attorneys think their firm is so great when they're not even a Vault 35? I don't know one person who has said that Quinn is one of their top 5 CA choices, let alone the best business litigation firm.
You would think that they could contain their unwarranted pride at a time when people are getting fired.
They did offer 12 weeks severance pay to their attorneys. That is pretty gracious.
Are you joking 69? Obviously Vault is a piece of shit, and it shows how much the "prestige surveys" are worth.
My fellow Americans, change is coming to America. It's true that things will get worse before they get better, but nothing good comes without hard work.
On behalf of a grateful nation, I think you for your sacrifices, and I look forward to your future contributions as productive lawyers.
Together, we can make it happen. Yes, we can. Yes, we will.
Believe in change, and change will come.

Time to pay the piper and get back to basics. Big salary is gone, the simple things of life returns. You have nothing to fear but fear itself.
Is anyone experiencing layoffs in areas other than timekeepers or their direct supporters? HR, IT, conf serv, benefits, atty hiring, or other admin staff not bringing in cash flow? where's the beef now?
A partner came into my office after I learned that I had been laid off. Quote of the day - "This is really hard... especially for you."
Thanks for the sentiments, champ.
Several layoffs in Atlanta office.
BC is in crash and burn mode. Watch for CSGs to bolt.
Anyone know about NY office?
The best gig in the world is to be a senior administrator at Bryan Cave. We pay our CIO, CHRO, CMO and office Director of Adminstration insane dollars for essentially what is a 9-5 job. While there are good administrators here, most are simply good at talking up a good storm and kissing ass to Don Lents and Frank Wolff.
Bryan Cave's press release left out some important information. Salaries for all counsel across the firm are being reduced from 10-30%. So much for a "salary freeze." Blame it on global warming.
70=post of the day. The DOAs are the dead weight.
70 and 81 Bryan Cave management. Unless some partners were let go how could the laid off associates be the dead weight unless its the associates' job to do the rainmaking..... sounds more like unproductive partners to me who of course are paid twice as much if not more and have empty books. Oh yeah and first years were laid off after having their start dates pushed. TTT all the way.....
82 it is the dead weight partners and middle management. Charles Newman is just leading the way for CSG to bolt and raise a glass to Wolff and Lents for the destruction.
I love reading these comments about "dead weight partners" and the whining by posters who are clearly (a) generation "me" law students or (b) generation "me" big law associates who think they have a god given write to start at $200,000 when they don't know their asses from first base. The fact is, the work economy is in a global recession that may become a depression. Big law is not immune to its effects. Big law firms are going to feel pain like every other industry. The fact is, you young punks whining about how much money you should make have priced yourself to the point where there isn't that much difference between your billing rates and a young partner's billing rates. The difference is, the young partner -- even if he doesn't have big originations yet -- knows how to practice law. She is more valuable when you have to cut personnel, because she can go back to writing briefs and also handle a matter in court AND her hours won't get written off as unproductive the way most junior associates hours are. If anything good comes out of this it will be some PERSPECTIVE being forced on you Generation Me types who thinks the world owes you an obscene living.

84, 85, 86 - a good associate would have proof read that for you before hitting the send button.
Apparently 84, 85, 86 lost her PERSPECTIVE of law firm economics. As she notes, there is not much difference between the billing rates for associates and young partners. But there is a big difference in how much each gets paid. It, therefore, makes much more sense for a firm to assign an associate to work on a matter, charge the client the amount billed by that associate and pay that associate their wage than it makes to assign a junior partner to a matter, charge basically the same amount (or even less because the partner will be able to do the task in less time) and pay the partner her inflated draw. The partners who actually bring in business do much better economically by having associates work on their matters. That is why the truly profitable law firms do not have dead weight (or service) partners.
BC: How's that Pogo anchor around the neck fitting these days?
Very sad, very sad. Many good people are being hurt by the economy. Bryan Cave is no different from other businesses.
Would these law firms dare to call people back when they need the good people they let go? Hmmmmmm
The word is that there is about to be a counsel revolt at BC over salary reductions. But what recourse do they really have?
I thought everyone at Pogo had a guaranteed job-- what happened?
I never though Bryan Cave would have to let people go. They were always well positioned. What happened?
Who said the Pogo people were safe? Is that part of the merger agreement? Who is really safe? True, acquiring POGO was not a good idea in the middle of an economic crisis. Bad decision. Now, as we all know, even the people that were spared their jobs this time around are very worried. Even though these firms say no more layoffs, that is not always the case. They are probably just trying to not make people go into panic mode. Believe nothing. Look at the layoff list and see how many firms have gone through more than one round of layoffs.
Some big had major layoffs....partners were asked to leave, counsel, associates, managers in all areas and, of course, support staff. The firms that cut in all areas are probably the firms that are through cutting people for good. Firms that trimmed the fat but did not hit the bigger salaried workers, will probably have to revisit layoffs once again after the second or third quarter. If things are not looking up, the shoe will probably drop again...this time on the bigger guys!
Let's hope the economy picks up or where will all these people find jobs? It is tough out there now...imagine what it will be 6 months from now!
Some very good firms are NOT on the list....good for them. It shows strength. Let's all try to get work with those firms...to secure our future.
