Nationwide Salary Freeze Watch: Buchanan Ingersoll, and a New Round-up

pay freeze salary freeze pay cut law firm.jpgAfter yesterday's staff layoff news, it may come as no surprise that Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney is the latest firm to freeze associate salaries for 2009. From a tipster there:

Buchanan Ingersoll announced a salary freeze for 2009 for all associates except "unusual" cases, e.g., laterals who were brought in at what is now perceived to be slightly undermarket salaries last year may get bumped a little. Several other raises on a case-by-case basis, but they will be few.

Better a freeze than a lay-off, we say. We've updated the list of firms that have chosen not to institute class year raises. The list is now 47-firms strong. Check it out, after the jump.

Here is the list of firms that have frozen salaries at 2008 levels for 2009, or until further notice. Send us updates at tips@abovethelaw.com.

This will surely drive the average salary for UPenn State grads down, which will only make it harder for UPenn State to keep its ABA accreditation, let alone break out of the 4th tier! the hits keep on coming!

This makes no sense. Buchanan Ingersoll doesn't give lock step raises. In fact, they barely give raises at all. We're lucky if they throw a $5K raise our way at the end of the year and the raises are usually somewhere between $3K and $0. If I had to guess I’d say Nolan Kurtz is leaking this info in an effort to try and actually make the firm look good by saying there's a salary freeze, implying that there is actually something to freeze to begin with. You can’t freeze zero. This absolutely makes no sense.

While this might be seen as copying lawshucks a bit, would it be possible to have some kind of tab or link on the first page where we could easily find this list, rather than having to search for it?

Just a suggestion/request!

But Buchanan is one of the better Philadelphia firms.

Please also note that Pillsbury has a "thaw" available to remedy the freeze. Associates affected by the freeze who make hours (1950) will get the salary step difference back at the end of the year.

I blame the NYC office. They pay the associates their $40K then the ones in our main office even though they have no work and now they're bring us all down. I've really had enough of those guys.

The pillsbury notation is not entirely accurate. It is a solid ice freeze even for those who billed over 1800 hours. The only exception is for those who billed fewer than 1800 hours last year (and did not get a raise), but who billed over 1800 hours this year. Those individuals will get a bump up to their class level.

Any word on the V10? (the firms you wouldn't expect this garbage from).

Associates at these firms should have studied harder in law school. They might have ended up at firms that aren't freezing salaries. This reads like the laundry list of median GULC employers.

20, I think 18 is trying to say that the associates in Buchanan's NY office have a much higher salary than the Pittsburgh office but contribute very little to the firm's growth and are viewed by many as an economic drain of the firm.

Sutherland needs to be updated with a notation that an associate can receive his/her full 2009 comp. if he/she bills 1950 (and pro bono is unlimited).

The NY office is and should be Barry Slotnick and a few of his minions. Other than that, it's a waste of office space.

If the Pittsburgh associates are all as illiterate as #18, perhaps the NY associates DESERVE $40k more!

28--I don't know if you can comprehend the fact that there are at least 2 people named Barry Slotnick in this world, but 26 meant the Litigation one, not the IP one.

28, you have your Barry Slotnicks mixed up. Barry Slotnick is still the Partner and Chair of Intellectual Property and Entertainment at Loeb & Loeb. Buchanan has the ambulance chasing, subway shooter defending, media hound Barry Slotnick leading their firm. Same name but totally different game.

It would be interesting to know what is going on with Howrey. Didn't they go to non-lockstep compensation this year? As a result, they wouldn't need to announce a freeze of any kind. For all we know, some of their associates and counsel are making less than they used to, let alone the same.
