Some Resources for Making Sense of the Layoffs

Here at ATL, we’re happy to be the unhappy place that you come for the most recent law firm layoff news and rumors. We’ll continue to bring you the latest news on law firm troubles in this difficult economic time, as we know how important real-time knowledge is as you make informed decisions about your careers.

In addition to our collected coverage, there are a few resources on the web for round-ups of layoff news:

  • The newest law firm layoff tracker on the Web is Lawshucks. It’s an impressive compilation of layoff news from a variety of sources (including ATL) put into bar graph, chart, and list form. This is the best bird’s-eye-view source out there.
  • As we’ve noted before, the American Lawyer maintains a Layoff List. It collects layoff coverage from Law.com publications, the WSJ law blog, and of course, ATL.
  • Vault.com has a Layoff Tracker for notable staff cuts at notable companies. This tool is not limited to law firms, so head there if you wish to see law firm layoffs in a wider context. For example, Alston & Bird may have laid off 34 people earlier this month, but Panasonic announced plans to lay off 15,000.

According to Lawshucks, there have been “3,290 layoffs since January 1, 2008. There have been 1,528 in calendar 2009.” That’s of course limited to layoffs reported by the media.

As always, send us news at tips@abovethelaw.com with “Layoffs” in the subject.
