Adventures in Lawyer Advertising: Getting to Know Your Indian Brethren
Attorney bios on Biglaw websites tend to be pretty staid: education history, practice area, contact information, and the state bar(s) passed. The only color comes in the form of a headshot, if there is one and if it’s not in black and white. Smaller firms tend to have a little more fun with their bios, as we’ve explored before in our Adventures in Lawyer Advertising series.
Small firms in India have even more fun with their bios though. Roll On Friday directs us to the website of Kan & Krishme. We’re pleased to discover among their senior associates one who is married to a flight attendant, another who “can argue for hours on subjects such as Human Psychology and World politics,” and several who enjoy “listening to soft music.” Vandana Vadehra, for example, can rock the 80s wear, sing, and keep us enthralled for hours:
VANDANA VADEHRA
* B. Sc (Hons) LLB. (Delhi University).
* Specialization- Patent and Trademark Filings and prosecution. Drafting of Patent specifications relating to chemistry, microbiology, biotechnology and biology and prosecution thereof including Patent and Trademark litigation. She is one of the few Attorneys from India belonging to the fair sex. She besides being involved in Patent and Trademark matters is also very active in English vocal music both pop and classical and never misses an opportunity if invited for a song. From our experience we have observed that she has the capability of enthralling a large audience for hours together.
She’s Debbie Gibson with a law degree. Bios of others to whom your jobs are being outsourced, after the jump.
Here are a few excerpts from the bios of attorneys at the Indian IP firm Kan & Krishme.
Unlike that of Vandana Vadehra, the bio of Kanchan Vadehra does not note that she is a member of the “fairer sex,” but does play into gender stereotypes in noting her love of cooking:
She is one of the founding members of the firm and has been instrumental in creating the basic infrastructure of the firm. She qualified the examination of the Patents Agents in the year 1999 and since than has been active in drafting and prosecution of Patent Application and renewal of granted Patents
At Home: She knows that the way to man’s heart is through the stomach. In fact she keeps trying her hand at new recipes in the kitchen and we can say for sure that she is a successful woman not only in the office but back home too. She is happily married and has three kids, one girl and twin boys.
Knows her way around the kitchen and the patent office. Nice.
Sharad Vadehra is a well-balanced guy. He likes to rock, enjoys nature’s company, but still finds time to surf the Net:
During his leisure time he enjoys listening to Eric Clapton and Neil Diamond and plays Cricket on Sundays. He is an admirer of nature and whenever possible would like be in nature’s company. Of course, he does like to surf the Internet. He is happily married and has three kids, one girl and twin boys.
Vikas Chandra keeps it vague, but simple:

He has an interest in sports and Indian movies. Besides he can argue for hours on subjects such as Human Psychology and World politics.

Sweet mother of god what the hell is that?
FIRST
Did Elie write these bios?
(Just kidding, big guy)
this is not real
Surely something was lost in translation. These can't be real, can they?
"She knows that the way to man's heart is through the stomach."
Someone should get these guys a cultural consultant if they're marketing themselves to Western companies.
Tying this to the outsourcing theme is tenous stuff indeed. But I bet you any of these lawyers could work you under the table you jelly-bellied softies. It is so cute to see Americans acting "frugal," it's like watching a kitten try to read.
They're real, and they're spectacular.
Not so, 7. The way to a man's heart is through his stomach, but only if you turn the knife and twist upwards.
I find that mustache offensive. Please trim and moderate.
slumlobster
vandana's bio sounds like it could double as a dating profile. and maybe it does, as she's apparently not married.
11 - or you can just use a kukri.
I thought the way to a man's heart was through his penis.
If this is the work of the firms themselves in English, I feel much safer about outsourcing already.
First to say this is down right racist. Shame on you Elie.
do 1L sa's get a firm bio? mine would discuss my fondness of enjoying ATL's company.
-nervous T-10 1L
soon to be nervous 1L sa
Imagine if NY firms did this. I wonder if Cravath attorneys will say that their hobbies include fully equipped party girl hookers and paying a mom to have sex with her underaged daughters.
How do I know if I am prestigious or racist?
LOL @ "of course, he does like to surf the internet." What is this 1995 HEY LOOK AT ME DUDES I'M SURFIN THE INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY COWABUNGA !!!
First to say 16 is a PC-monger. Here's hoping your job gets outsourced to the fair Vandana.

can't wait...CANNOT WAIT until i get to litigate against a patent drafted in India!!!! to all inhouse counsel that thinks you are saving your jobs by going Indian cheap, just wait, there are those of us employed by companies that scour newly published applications looking for signs of indian drafting. We love, LOVE, telling our client that the patent reads like crap and that the company may have violated export control laws. Good times. Mmmm, cannot wait.
The U.S. associates' ship be sinking! Bye, bye 160k
the vadehras are quite the legal family. unless it's a common surname.
I would bet $10 that the pictures aren't even the real pics. we engaged a law firm in india and had some issues. our CFO at the same time was traveling in india and decided to "stop by". the address was a single office for four, count them, FOUR law firms. same file cabinets, same secretaries, and what was scary, is that the CFO could not determine if they were the same attorneys for the different firms. needless to say, that was the end of that. we ended up hiring a german private investigator to ensure that all of our files were removed from their machines. scary, but hey, as long as its cheap, right?
http://www.kankrishme.com/
lulz.
Wouldn't Kashmir Hill fit right into Kan & Krishme?
She left out the part about "working" for Elliot Spitzer.
DIdnt she "work" for Elliot Spitzer?
What are the odds that two of the employees--one male, one female--each have a daughter and twin sons? Must be something in the water.
(Yes, I know, I'm kidding)
Vandana is using a picture of her taken in 1986.
vandana reminds me of marissa tomei in my cousin vinnie.
I'm surprised nobody's said this yet, so here:
Shiva H. Vishnu!
Thank you, come again!
-Apu
They are all "happily" doing something such as being married, yet in all of their pictures, they looked like the most miserable people on earth. They must love their law firm. Be sure to outsource there.
Bobby Jindal here with a Republican response and saying like the president's father, my own parents came to this country from a distant, far away land. When they arrived in Baton Rouge, my mother was already 4-½-months pregnant. You can add to my bio that I was what folks in the insurance industry now call a "pre-existing condition."
NOTE: many of the attorneys profiled here are patent prosecutors. IPOutsourcePWNED!
Silly post and ignorant comments.
FYI for all of you India-haters, India does not have mega-firms like the United States and Britain. These are people who run their own practices based largely on local clients. To the extent that they conduct U.S. work, it looks like they do patent prosecution--and probably for a lot cheaper than any U.S. firm.
Given that most U.S. law firms, prior to the meltdown, were trying to find ways into Indian markets because of the untapped technological innovation (which = money for law firms), I'd hesitate before scoffing at an entire nation.
Hahaha I know Vikas he is good at patent things, but I must tell you, it is very very true what they say! He is indeed, indeed very talkative about Human Psychology, and has many things to say about Politics! Such a rascal.
Oh my goodness gracious. 39, you had me rolling with laughter.
38 - Seriously, chill. Nobody doubts that India has money, talent, and ambition. They also have their share of law firms with dopey websites and idiotic marketing.
Just ask these guys:

(or anyone forced to sing that awful Nixon Peabody song...)

They're a whole lot more likeable and interesting than American attorneys.
