Cardozo Responds To Finals Scheduling Conflict

Cardozo school of law logo.JPGYesterday, we reported that 2Ls at Cardozo were going to have to miss a week of their firm summers because of the school’s late final exams.

Today, the school has responded, offering students the flexibility to reschedule their finals if their firms have a mandatory summer start date. Cardozo Dean David Rudenstine emailed the students today:

In addition, and more to the point, Dean Arthur Fama, Dean Judith Mender, and Vice Dean Michael Herz, who have been in consultation since becoming aware of the potential for conflict, recommend, given the constraints, that the law school this year permit a student with a summer legal position with a mandatory start date that conflicts with an examination late in the schedule to apply to reschedule the examination. The details of this policy will be set forth in the exam memorandum that will be posted on Angel in due course.

We think this is excellent news. In this market schools and students need to be as flexible as possible, and it seems like Cardozo’s administration responded quickly to a novel problem.

CARDOZO — MEMO — SUMMER START DATES

Recently some 2L students have reported that the Cardozo 2009 spring examination schedule overlaps with a summer start-date for some law firm employment, and have inquired as to what might be done in response.

The Cardozo spring semester often runs later in May in comparison to some law schools because of our January Intensive Trial Advocacy Program (ITAP) for which about 100 students annually register. The examination schedule for this semester, which has been public for about a year, ends on May 22, a few days later than usual because of the calendar cycle.

An overlap between the Cardozo examination schedule and the earliest start date for some summer law programs has not previously been problematic, because a summer program often has more than one possible start date. In fact, this is the first time that I recall this issue coming to my attention.

However, I wanted to be certain that you had this information now so as to assuage concerns and to facilitate the planning of your transition from examinations to summer employment.

Sincerely,
Dean David Rudenstine
