Legal Eagle Wedding Watch 3.15: The Brides of March

It’s NCAA Tournament time, which means that if you get married this weekend or the next two, your guests will be cursing you as they surreptitiously refresh their BlackBerries. We therefore applaud this week’s brides, who planned their weddings for this past weekend, before the madness struck. They are — if we may say so — our Cinderellas.

Here are this week’s finalists:

1.

Sara Schacter and Aram Erenburg

2. Melissa Weiss and Kenneth Mazer

3. Rebecca Kirszner and James Katz

1. Sara Schacter and Aram Erenburg

The Case:

– This unpretentious-looking bride has an undergraduate degree from NYU and a master’s from Hunter College. She works as a job placement supervisor for people with disabilities. Her groom graduated from the University of Michigan and has a JD from Cardozo. He’s an associate at Kucker & Bruh, which is “a highly respected Manhattan law firm,” according to its own website.

The Case Against:

– Sara and Aram’s wedding website makes them seem refreshingly down-to-earth: Aram’s a Star Wars fan; Sara likes to knock back the booze. What are these people doing in the NYT?

2. Melissa Weiss and Kenneth Mazer

(Buy them a sugar bowl.)

The Case:

– The bride, a former senior counsel of OppenheimerFunds in New York, has undergraduate and law degrees from Harvard. The groom, a widower, graduated from the University of Vermont and has an MBA from NYU. He’s a founder and VP of an importing company in New York.

– Their write-up breaks the stunning news that there are Jews in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Case Against:

– Melissa and Kenneth are attempting to shake their guests down for a bunch of very pricey gifts. Nice to see that their intended victims aren’t biting (e.g., they’ve gotten zero of their twelve $350 sterling sets and only three of their $286 gold place settings.) Memo to the couple: You got married in Kentucky, and your combined age is 84. Buy your own gold-encrusted plates.

3. Rebecca Kirszner and James Katz

(Buy them a home recycling center.)

The Case:

– The bride, who graduated from Clark University and has a master’s from UPenn, is a former communications director for Harry Reid. She now works for Hilltop Public Solutions, a political consulting firm.

– The dreamy groom graduated from Brown and is pursuing a joint degree in law and public policy from Harvard. His father, Robert J. Katz, is a senior director and the former general counsel at Goldman Sachs, as well as a former partner at Sullivan and Cromwell.

The Case Against:

– We have a very good feeling about this couple. She’s 33 and he’s 28, but that’s not a big enough difference to gross us out. We actually like James more than we would if he were marrying a 24-year-old marketing intern.

The Verdict:

Goldman and Sullivan may not be the giants of old, but those names still sound good. And “Harvard” will always be sweet, sweet music to our ears. Those three factors are enough to nudge

Team Kirszner-Katz past the competition. Congratulations!
