Morning Docket 03.05.09
* Adam Cohen sounds like a long-time reader of Above The Law. He mentions Jerry Springer’s Northwestern commencement speech and Clarence Thomas’s love of Egg McMuffins in this editorial on recessions being good for blogs. Yes, the layoff news means our traffic is insanely high these days, but we miss the time when Lawyers of the Day outnumbered Nationwide Layoff Watch posts. [New York Times]
* Married legal correspondent Jeffrey Toobin, of CNN and The New Yorker, has been beset by rumors of an affair with Yale law grad Casey Greenfield. He hasn’t commented or responded to our inquiries, but he has updated his Facebook status. [Gawker]
* A second state is now pro-suicide choice. Washington okays law allowing doctors to prescribe lethal drugs to the terminally ill. [New York Times]
* That’s dedicated counseling. Ira Lee Sorkin gets death threats for representing Bernie Madoff. [Reuters]
* California Superior Court Judge Cinda Fox was attacked and stabbed by an accused murderer yesterday. Fox is fine, but there will be no closing argument in this case. [Los Angeles Times]
* Dahlia Lithwick; a Skadden partner; and law professors from Yale, Chicago, and NYU had a little book club discussion about The Great Decision, Cliff Sloan’s new book on Marbury v. Madison. [Slate]
* Diverse 1Ls encouraged to apply. Cooley invites first-year law students with diverse backgrounds to apply for a fellowship which includes $15,000 for tuition and a summer associate gig with the firm. [Cooley Godward Kronish]

Right to die, the dangers of being a judge or a criminal defense attorney,1L internships, and a discussion of Marbury v. Madison?
What, no hookers? What do you think this is, Kash, a law blog?
You're going to love my nuts.
As a person who attended the Springer commencement speech, all I can say is...
THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS FOR JOHN MCCAIN!
Why only to the terminally ill?
Why do we care about the Cooley diversity gig? There are tons of firms that do that kind of thing. Hardly noteworthy.
Someone at ATL: please look into the K&E Friday layoff rumor being circulated on autoadmit.com.
Hurry up and get rid of all the staff.
No attorney layoffs unless they are 3Ls or 1st years....
K&L Gates rises! Well, at least their new sign on their building is rising today....
I would find it delicious if they cut ranks on the day they put their sign up on their building.
Cooley's restrictions of personal diversity in terms of ethnicity, gender, physical disability and/or sexual orientation is a bit confusing. How can one person have diverse backgrounds? Or if diverse means not the norm, then does this mean women shouldn't apply?
If they mean anyone is eligle except for able-bodied straight white men, why don't they just say as much?
10, obviously Cooley wants mixed-race bisexual partially-disabled hermaphrodites only.
10 - asians need not apply either, silly rabbit
Kashmir - Thank you for writing a link summary that is actually cogent. Will you look at that, I can figure out what to expect when I click on the link! Elie, take note.
12 - good point. Would being jewish count for or against your eligibility, or is it different depending on which city you are in (Dallas versus NYC)? - 10
3 is a cheap imitation. He's not even German! Don't be fooled by imitators!
Why don't they just say it: We care more about the color of your skin than anything else about you.
16, because the care as much about other "diverse" elements than just the color of you skin.
Fuck 15.
Tacos, fettucini, linguini, martini, bikini.
14 - the idea is to pick people from ethnic groups that are more interested in shoes than studying from a young age. anybody from a group that raises their young properly need not apply, regardless of location.
Signed, 12.
So if I'm a girl like Tila Tequila and I make out with girls, does that make me diverse?
Yay, I get attention _and_ free money.
you can tell that the word "diverse" has lost all meaning when it seems perfectly reasonable for a person to be "diverse" standing alone.
You don't have to be mad to work here, but you do have to be on time, well presented, a team player, customer service focused and sober!!
The hate here is intense sometimes.
