Amazing. The WSJ article does not mention any of the 3L offers that have been rescinded by major firms. It's probably a good thing that the article generally refers to this market as the worst in recent memory. But, all of that talk about the "versatility" of a law degree is kind of over the top. Perhaps they should have interviewed some of the recently unemployed to see just how much versatility is built into a law degree.

2, an interview with recently unemployed lawyers may not be the best way to gauge versatility of law degrees. In a down economy, law degrees are bound to be less versatile. People entering law school now are expecting to go on the market under better economic conditions.

however, I agree with your general point though.

Law degrees are quite versatile. With a law degree, you can be a securities lawyer or a tax lawyer or a litigation lawyer or an insurance lawyer or an unemployed lawyer.

Why do these people so willfully ignore the fact that "the economy will likely improve by the time you graduate" makes no sense in the context of law school? If you're a 1L now, you've missed the boat if the economy improves by the time your graduate (approx. May 2011). You're doing your interviewing in only 5 months from now! That means the economy has to improve markedly in . . . oh, about a week from now (to give firms time to realize that they need to hire more by the time they come to campus). The Wall Street Journal, which covers the legal market extensively, should recognize this. Law school is not a 3-year safe haven by any means. It's, at most, a 1-year haven. And who in their right mind would call being a 1L a safe haven?

if you are a senior associate and have reached your eighth year, in a normal economy the firm would have kept you on, but now they are telling you that you don't have a future and you need to leave within a certain period of time. is this a layoff? the firm would argue it's just part of the normal "up or out" process that exists in any economy. how would this scenario be perceived by other firms when you look for a new job?

"In spite of the recent blood bath at lawfirms--law school applications are still up."

What a bunch of dummies.

Those kids are going to learn that law school administrators are even bigger liars than lawyers. It serves them right, since most law school students are arrogants asses.

Pretty sure I read a NALP article that said though the number of applications at schools is up, the total number of applicants is about the same.

Interesting distinction, 20. Do you have any idea where you read that? Any ideas why people would apply to more schools in this environment? Just trying to cover their bases I assume.

And Eliza, this is one of the best Morning Dockets in a while. I actually ready every article. Keep up the good work.

Law students = lemmings.

How many people have we had in the last few months do everything "right" from a prestige perspective - and then get sacked as a junior associate with full nondischargable loans? And that's after they got the damn job.

You'll notice, I didn't have anybody being Arab. I thought that would be too explosive, uh, no pun intended. But I just thought, 'too soon' for Arabs, maybe next year. You know, the ball's in their court.

Hey Hall Monitor (41):

Did you even read your first sentence? Did it take you your whole life to develop into such a douchebag or was it just a few years of concentrated effort?

Could you please give me the name of your blog? I am *SO EXHASPERATED* with this one, I MUST go somewhere where they can spell the name of Chinese juice correctly.

Tool.
