Morning Docket 3.27.09

superbis.jpg* The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that hundreds of juvenile court cases in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania will soon be overturned. After former judge Mark Ciavarella pleaded guilty to accepting bribes from juvenile prisons in exchange for more convictions, the state hired a “Special Master” to investigate. He is not a Malasian Martial Arts expert or the Commander of a space shuttle. [WNEP news]

* Cuomo is still running around in his superhero cape putting out bonus fires. He has expanded his investigation into credit derivatives to see whether banks like Goldman Sachs received taxpayer funds. Do I smell a presidential run in 2012? [Bloomberg]

* In a stunning act of self parody, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has picked a Director for the NRA for the state’s new Attorney General. Check out this sweet picture of him sitting on a hummer. [Anchorage Daily News]

* Former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff has joined Covington & Burling. [Covington & Burling LLP]

* Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen has a different response to executive compensation than Cuomo and Blumenthal. He says “..there is no law in Wisconsin making a contract illegal simply because someone is well compensated.” [The Wall Street Journal]

* In case you missed it, ATL got a shout out in the New York Times and Time Magazine.

Eliza, the only thing you smell is the excrement you just smeared all over this site with your horrible Morning Docket post.

LEARN.

TO.

WRITE.

Also (although I have to assume you're just trying to look really stupid and uninformed on this point), it should be pretty f*king clear to anyone who can both breathe and chew at the same time that Andrew Cuomo, Democrat, will not be running for President in 2012. I will leave it to your stunning intellect to figure out why.

Seriously, no mention of the judges dinner occuring tonight? Why not report on legal events. . . especially large, prominent, famous ones.

avatar
11 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, March 27, 2009 9:38 AM

10 - Don't you know? Nobody at ATL cares about your TTT judges unless it's SCOTUS or Court of Appeals.

From the link provided by 9:

"This appointment of a terrorist's defense lawyer to the Department of Justice announces that Barack Obama is in favor of a more lenient stance on terrorists."

Talk about self-parody. This is why its hard to take people like you seriously, 9.

Are you sure Chertoff didn't actually join those crazy witches from Vermont, Burlington & Coven?

avatar
17 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, March 27, 2009 9:46 AM

9, yes, because defense lawyers are just as bad as their clients and inherently forfit any right to any official position by representing scum who are clearly guilty. And bullying the American legal establishment to not provide representation to those accused of capital crimes is such a noble effort.

Moron.

15, I say it's a good thing in this economy for a legal blog to focus on events that are still occuring showing that the entire "ship ain't sinkin." Firms are still putting out large chunks of money for this event. Hence, everything is not an epic failure. Some hope.

Very cheap shot at Palin, and at supporters of gun rights, who, in your view, I suppose, are disqualified from being state attorney general.

But I'm sure you'd make the same kind of remark about the recently appointed, pro-gun rights, Democratic senator from New York, right? Right?

30, 31 - I think a lot of what Elie was pointing out was the ridiculous pose the guy is striking in his picture, like he's Ms. November sitting on his Hummer with his belly hanging out. It's just funny to see what flies (and is popular) in Alaska state politics. I don't want to put words into Elie's mouth, but I don't think it was really so much a jab at gun rights as a jab at the "run over anyone in my Canyonero, shoot animals from a helicopter and middle finger at the environment" style that Palin sort of whoops up. Granted it's a 2002 picture, back Ahhnold still drove his H1, but still.

32, 11:
You are obviously a retarded 1L. There is this court of appeals called "The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit." Please go look it up in Wikipedia before you comment back about "more than one federal circuit." Now go learn this in Civ. Pro. before you comment TWICE revealing your ignorance on a blog for ACTUAL lawyers. I actually pity you know for being 2x's the douchebag.

- not the previous poster, but cannot believe your stupidity.

Besides the fact that no Democrat who wants to have a future in the party* (or who doesn't want to be annihilated in the primary) will be challenging Obama in 2012, Cuomo has to do something else before making a viable run. Probably governor -- follow the Spitzer path, minus the hookers, of course.

* Didn't he have an ugly divorce from a Kennedy? Seems like that could hurt in some ways too (re intraparty politics).

39 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, March 27, 2009 11:40 AM

33, your attempt at covering Elie's partisan hackery doesn't survive a simple reading of the post.

"In a stunning act of self parody, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has picked a Director for the NRA for the state's new Attorney General. Check out this sweet picture of him sitting on a hummer."

The "stunning act" is clearly the picking of the NRA Director. The (admittedly ridiculous) picture is completely superfluous to the point Elie was making. Elie did not write, "In a stunning act of self parody, Palin picked a goober who poses on the hood of his Hummer."

avatar
40 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, March 27, 2009 11:56 AM
