Morning Docket 3.20.09

* AIG turned in the list of bonus recipients to New York’s Attorney General Andrew Cuomo yesterday—let the games begin. Just kidding, I too fear for the safety of heavily compensated AIG executives—there is nothing scarier than an angry progressive. [The Los Angeles Times]

* Dispensers of medical marijuana have room to breathe after Attorney General Eric Holder announced that federal authorities would cease raiding their operations. [The New York Times]

* Attorney General Eric Holder issued guidelines to federal agencies after The White House advised them to release their records to the public. [The Washington Post]

* A 3-judge federal appeals panel is considering whether or not to re-instate Madoff’s bail—springing him from jail until sentencing in June. [Newsday]

* Albert Hu, a Silicon Valley hedge fund manager conned clients by saying he was represented by prominent law firms like Heller Ehrman and Shaw Pittman; he was arrested in Hong Kong, and charged with defrauding millions from investors. [The National Law Journal]

* Another sad tale of an associate whose offer has been put on hold—his employer Latham & Watkins is asking incoming attorney’s to defer their start dates. [The National Law Journal]

"attorneys" not "attorney's" for the very last item on the docket

That "deferred start date" article is hilariously TTT. First, a University of Illinois College of Law grad with a job at Latham? lolz. Second, an interview with the dean of UPenn State's satellite philly campus? last, the northwestern grad who can't pass the cali bar in two sittings? how is this article relevant to most people here?

Biglaw partners might want to have a look at today's Boston Globe: "To stave off layoffs, Beth Israel doctors agree to give $350K"

I can forgive some typos in a post but I cannot forgive "incoming attorney's".

avatar
5 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, March 20, 2009 9:27 AM

why did they find the 1 incoming associate with the last name of either "Latham" or "Watkins" to interview for the Latham & Watkins article? That shit is confusing. And they could have at least noted that he is or is not related to the named partner to dispel the confusion.

Wait, since when is Newsday a legitimate source for anything?

avatar
7 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, March 20, 2009 9:32 AM

That's not a typo; that's illiteracy.

Holy cow. Eliza writes worse than Elie.

Interesting that this article is dated March 23 (today is March 20)

In NorthwesTTTern grad's defense, the article says he didn't pass the CA bar the first time. The result of his second attempt is still pending.

10, come on, i think it's safe to say that he KNOWS he didn't pass it. he's already making backup plans.

does NU have legacy admits or something?

From where on earth do people get the idea that it's ever okay to add an apostrophe-s to pluralize a word? How does that habit even start? The most amazing part of it is that it's more difficult than doing it properly. It takes a whole extra keystroke.

LEFTIST.

There's nothing scarier than an angry LEFTIST.

Liberal doesn't work because that confuses Europeans, who equate "liberalism" with the politics of individal "freedom." Progressive doesn't work because that has historical baggage and T.R. would roll over in his grave if he thought people took the label seriously as applied to these people. And socialist doesn't work because, bizarrely, they don't self-identify as "socialist," at least not in public.

That leaves LEFTIST.

12 - All of the teacher's I had in grammar school never said it was an issue.

avatar
16 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, March 20, 2009 9:42 AM

And just to be clear, since they are alllllways angry, "angry leftist" is redundant. And since they don't really believe in individual action, it's better to identify the dogma than the individual. So I would retype the whole damn phrase: "Nothing is scarier than leftism."

16 - individualism grew out of liberalism, which is inherently to the left. shouldn't you be listening to Rush right now instead of posting on teh internets?

except right-wing hysteria. The only thigh worse than leftism.

If Bernie is allowed out pending sentencing, he will kill himself.

Does Eliza even read this site?

Half of these stories have already been posted on ATL.

Lat, I'm sure there are a lot of better writers looking for work these days. Just saying.

I think we should put Bernie in the David Blane glass box in Times Square and people walking by could throw pennies at him until he is completely covered. That way, we could make sure he's dead but not penniless.

That Watkins dude has to be related, right? How else could an Illinois grad get a job with Latham? Unless he's just making up the whole thing. "Oh yeah, I totally got a job with Latham, but they deferred me. Totally sucks."

U of Illinois is top tier right?
this kid could be top 5-10% LR and get Latham I would imagine.

Hell, from the other thread we've learned that there are 4 Loyola grads at Latham LA
