Nationwide Layoff Watch: Dewey Cuts Staff in U.S., Attorneys in U.K.
Dewey & LeBoeufOn Friday, we told you that Dewey & LeBoeuf was conducting performance review layoffs throughout its U.S. offices. That process is still on-going. While the firm continues to cut attorneys for performance, Dewey is acknowledging that it is cutting staff because of the economy.
An announcement went out today about significant staff layoffs at the firm:
The state of the global economy has created unprecedented challenges for law firms and their clients. We do not believe that a major improvement in the economy is likely in the near term. In order to maintain a strong, dynamic and competitive business, we cannot refrain from responding to these challenges. To this end, the firm has been reviewing its operations and we have already taken a number of steps to manage our expenses across the firm. We are now taking additional measures to ensure that the firm is well positioned to weather the economic downturn. The firm has carried out a detailed assessment of its administrative staffing needs. The firm’s management has come to the difficult but necessary conclusion that we need to eliminate a significant number of administrative staff positions in offices around the world. While reductions in force are regrettable, we are committed to taking the steps necessary to address the challenges of the current business climate and to ensure our continued success.
We understand that 100 staffers will be let go.
After the jump, we check out the U.K. situation.
Both attorneys and staff in the U.K. are also being let go:
The firm believes that it has no choice but to reduce its London legal and administrative staff numbers. With much regret, we will be starting a formal redundancy consultation process for all affected groups. We anticipate that approximately 15 lawyers (about 9% of London-based lawyers) and approximately 15 administrative staff (about 13% of London-based administrative staff) will be affected.
We won’t know the final numbers of U.K. cuts until the redundancy consultation process is completed.
Overall, the firm is looking to let go of 130, but that number does not take into account the attorneys being laid off this week for performance reasons.
Will there be a more formal announcement of further U.S. attorney layoffs from Dewey? We will have to wait until the end of the review process to find out.
Read the full U.S. announcement below.
DEWEY & LEBOEUF — STATEMENT — STAFF LAYOFFS
The state of the global economy has created unprecedented challenges for law firms and their clients. We do not believe that a major improvement in the economy is likely in the near term. In order to maintain a strong, dynamic and competitive business, we cannot refrain from responding to these challenges. To this end, the firm has been reviewing its operations and we have already taken a number of steps to manage our expenses across the firm. We are now taking additional measures to ensure that the firm is well positioned to weather the economic downturn.
The firm has carried out a detailed assessment of its administrative staffing needs. While reductions in force are regrettable, we are committed to taking the steps necessary to address the challenges of the current business climate and to ensure our continued success.
I recognize that members of our administrative staff will want to know if they are personally affected and our goal is to tell those who will be directly affected as soon as possible. In some countries, we are required by local employment law to follow strict guidelines. Subject to those guidelines, we will begin discussions with affected individuals beginning today, March 4. These decisions are difficult and have been made only after careful consideration. The firm values and appreciates the contribution of all those who are directly affected by these decisions and will do its best to assist and support those who leave the firm. I ask that everyone show understanding, support and consideration for colleagues during this difficult time.

Is there a severance package for the attorneys let go for performance reasons??
Nervous is back? I thought the witch hunt threats on the Orrick post would have driven you away. I hope the attempts to out you are continued on this thread
Any day now, Nervous, any day now. My chimp, Chompers, is going to gnaw off your face. Any day now.....
Ha ha. "The Big Sleazy, Tommy Gufano. He's a wop genius.
I could not believe there are still shitty firms out there wielding performance excuse to lay off attorneys. No wonder D&L is forever a third tier firm.
Things have not been the same for this firm since merger talks with Cheetham & Howe broke down last year.
We've lost Count Layoffula (RIP) but we can't fucking lose this Nervous 1L bitch.
I love how Dewey admits to laying off staff because of the economy but won't admit to laying off associates because of the economy. I bet that's part of their master plan. Kind of ironic that Dewey has financial problems when it comes to paying STAFF but doesn't have financial problems when it comes to paying ASSOCIATES. What a deceptive, bastard firm.
Chompers the Chimp is gunna get you Nervous. We know who you are.

The Eurostar is faster than the Acela. Which means I have less time to discuss layoffs during my trip to London.
If you're gonna be late, then be late and not just 2 minutes - make it an hour and enjoy your breakfast.
They also let go 18 D.C. associates (across class years) for "performance reasons". Wonder why that wasn't included in the memo...
Hey 19: Watch yourself...They have your IP address...

I started the nervous witch hunt yesterday. I just want to say the Chompers chimp comments continue to crack me up. I think I love you #13.
Dewey is such a cheap sleazeball - the real reason they need to fire stuff is because they kept cutting associates for the last year and a half (250? 300? and counting! - i.e. 30% of their associates were bad performance and the crisis (esp Lehman's meltdown) had little to do with it! Oh wait, there were 11 who WERE cut for economic reasons from the structured finance. LOL. Hopefully they are more generous to their staff then laid off attorneys who got 3 months and no bonus! (i.e. Dewey realized those were bad performers coincidently just 2 weeks before bonuses are due). Sleazedog millionaire!

It's alcohol, not beer.
Any word on what they're doing with incoming 3L's?
Nobody cares about the British. They have bad teeth and smell like Indian food.
They are also cutting FIRST YEARS! And they did not even have a review for them. As a matter of fact, FIRST YEARS were told that they would not be reviewed this year because it would be unfair since they had been in the firm only 4 months.
Good to see you again. Have you met my chimp, Chompers, yet? Say Hi, Chompers!

maybe they are cutting first years because they don't listen to simple instructions, such as only submit your comment once.
36: Any the sky's the limit.
wait, nervous now has a picture? is that new? are you a copycat?
I think Nervous T10 1L should spend more time being nervous quietly and less time being annoying online.
They probably will be using the old LeBoeuf model: "If you're gay, you're OK."
terrible news for UPenn state's satellite campus in Philly. staff jobs are the number one prospect for their JDs.
Wyeth decision is out, SCOTUS ruled for the plaintiff!
Nervous can't help himself. He loves the attention too much. While I don't advocate outing him I would like to see him assigned to an 18 month document review at a warehouse in upper manatoba. That would impress upon him his insignificance to be sure.
In addition to gnawing Nervous's face off, Chompers will now attack any double poster with the full force only a 200lb chimp can muster.
Thank you and god bless.
Does anyone know if they are cutting first years?
Nervous 1L - keep typing. I don't care about your posts, and you are not as annoying as some "annonymous" posters. So please continue to type away. You're arrogant, cocky, and see the world as though it revolves around you. So do most attorneys (myself included...at least sometimes). Nobody will "out" you (Elie as much as said he wouldn't let them on this site anyway). And if they do, then sue them - you might be out of work anyway!

46 - everyone is cutting first years. They are the darling of this layoff dance.
Chompers rocks!!!!!
Dewey to 190k!
I have instructed Chompers to ignore Nervous's face and to instead focus on gnawing off his fingers so he can no longer infect this site with nervousness.
Yes. They are cutting first years.

I love the arrogance and "first year can sue them" comments on this site. The facts of the autoadmit case which lead to the release of IP addresses would in no way be applied to the case of outing nervous 1L. Did most of you actually go to lawschool? I really doubt that if you think a case of defamation can be made by attempts to out nervous.

Although I feel for the staff layoffs I have yet to see this motivate staff to work harder to ensure they keep their jobs at my firm. Case in point, the snowstorm on Monday. We are in midtown manhattan. No one drives to work, you take a train or subway. Yet on Monday over 35 secretaries took a sick day on Monday? Maybe that's why you are getting laid off. Did the weather suck? Yup. We're kids off from school? Yup. But the same things affect us associates and we manage to make it into work. To have 35 secretaries call out is absolutely ridiculous.
Just wondering if anyone one here loves the arrogance and first year can sue them comments on this site.
I'm surprised that Nervous is still posting after the Orrick thread. He's obviously aggravated a substantial portion of this site's readership. Now people are threatening to out him (something that could possibly affect his career).
Dude, give it a rest already. Pick a new persona or something.
The staff at Douchey leBag must have seen this coming - as they saw associates being canned throughout a long period of time. Those in charge and ever-malicious HR must have forgotten about karma - maybe they should invite Sharon Stone to their women's day even - but wait, are there gonna be any women left once they are done?! Ship be sinkin!
I agree with 58.
right on 26-28!
Only cutting staffers in the U.S.? That's not how you're going to stay rich and fat like me. This firm is dead.
58: At Dewey, 80 secretaries didn't show up to work at our NY office on Monday (a list was put out). That was ridiculous. Is it a coincidence that staff is getting laid off this week? Yes. But still makes you think.
65 - It was 83 secretaries to be exact (I just counted), but to be fair, I didn't see too many other people who live outside of the city make it in either. Just because you take a train to work, doesn't mean you can get to the train station.
85, maybe the secretaries took off because they have young children. Secretaries normally get 4 weeks' leave per year, so let them take it whenever they want it. The main reasons I became a legal secretary is that I wanted the high pay, generous leave and benefits. I'm envious of secretaries in other industries who take days off whenever they want. No one makes them feel like a criminal. I rarely call in sick because I'm afraid of the repercussions in these law firms. If the money and benefits weren't so good, I'd never work for Biglaw again.
65 and 66, you solidify my point. I understand the secretaries in westchester or LI who couldnt make it in. Yet there were many secretaries who we know live in the 5 boroughs who didn't make it to work. Besides, I live in LI and I made it to the office by 11am. Yes, it took me an hour to shovel out my car and an hour to get the neighbors to watch my kids. But unless you're up on some mountain top it's do-able. It's just that they don't want to put in the effort.
I have a question about severance. Do the firms report paid out vacation as part of their pitiful severance package? I hope not. I called unemployment and they said they're still waiting to hear back from my firm about severance.
31 / 33 / 34 / 35 - do you have proof they're laying off 1st years?
67, you solidify my point as well. You claim that secretaries are needed to run the law firm. Yet, 80 of you don't show up at a time and the law firm runs fine. And no one can take leave whenever they want. If I'm on a case and we have a huge deadline, I can't just take off because I get 4 weeks of vacation time. I don't care what industry you're in. That line of thinking is just downright wrong and is why people get terminated. I worked in real estate before going to law school and the same rules applied. And us lawyers have young children as well. I have a 5 year old and a 7 year old. And we go into Biglaw for the exact same reason. . . the money. You're argument makes absolutely no sense and I just hope you are one of the staffers let go compared to those who are actually committed to their jobs.
I love my secretary. . . but if she continuously pulled that "I can take off whenever I want crapt" then I'd be fine without her.
yeah 67, take off whenever you want in a recession. Way to know how the world works.
71 and 72, you'll be happy to know that I was let go. But I was also one of the secretaries who never called in sick, and I'd ask my attorneys for permission to take days off way in advance. I'm just saying that the reason I didn't take mental health days is that I was always afraid to. You do make a good point that staffers shouldn't take a day off during a recession. I wouldn't have taken the day off, if I still had a job.
3 staff layoffs = 2 attorney layoffs TBA
berating legal secretaries to try and save your own skin. real classy, guys.
In reference to the comment about secretaries in NY taking off on Monday (due to snow). In the DC office only seven secretaries reported to work. So fa only the IT Manager has been notified of being let go.

73 what office where you in
IT manager of the DC office let go? Anyone else no any more updates about the DC office?
Count so far is a total 9 in all of the offices
68 needs to be the next one laid off from whatever sweat shop he haunts. what a crass, insensitive, arrogant, jerk. a litigator, too. probably knows all the best ways to hide documents and miscite cases.
anybody else in IT???
Wow. The level of narcissism and self-absorption from every single one of you over-privileged jackasses is unbelievable. Your bonuses are more than what most people's annual salary is and they manage to not only survive, but occasionally thrive. You are not more important or special. But if you don't know that by now, getting canned won't change it. You're a fucking lawyer, not God.

to 83/84:
big law lawyers work their ASSES off, never see their wives/husbands/families/friends and basically miss out on an otherwise inviting life outside of work to throw themselves into usually tedious bs that would make anyone's eyes bleed. then to ROB them of expected payment they EARNED is complete horseshit. why don't you get off your high horse and stop hating.

Has staff been told yet? I have seen no numbers regarding the different offices.
to 87. You make the mistake of thinking that I am not a lawyer. Contrary to what you might think, some lawyers do have perspective...
66--who received the list of absent secretaries? I'm trying to understand who was sent to and if it was sent to people beyond management why was it sent out in that manner?
It was sent out to all NYC personnel. It was sent this way because each group of attorneys supported by a secretary are usually sent an email informing them of a secretary absence. Due to the volume of secretaries absent, one email was sent.
Is there anymore up to date news on how many have been let go so far
92 - I am wondering too. They announced that there would be layoffs. No body count per office has been mentioned in ANY NEWS. Elie can you help us?
It's hard to count the number of Attorneys that are getting laid off because they getting three months to get their affairs in order and have to choice to tell people that they were let go. Of course most of them aren't.
I assume that means they will not get a severance. Is that correct?
94 Are they laying off associates and partners?
8 so far non attorneys in dc office
I got laid off today from D&L. actually kinda relieved. I hated my job.
It happened to me yesterday and there were at least 25 secys in the room with me and before that there had been 11 floaters let go.
94 here, I've heard both but can't confirm. I do know for sure there were senior associates.
Senior Associates? as in how senior?
99 - God bless you. Hope you and all the others find something quickly.
To all you obnoxious, condescending, narcisstic attorneys from DL who posted negative remarks with regards to the secretaries who took off that day, particularly the one that "lives in LI and still managed to come in by 11 after shoveling his/her car out in the snow and having the neighbors watch his kids." First and foremost, to even comment that unless you lived in Westchester or some other outside county you should've made it in, is by far the most stupid thing i ever heard. I happen to live in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx right before the toll bridge into Queens and if anyone would have come up here (if the road allowed you to) you would have noticed we were under almost 11 inches of snow. We here in Throggs Neck do not have access to a nearby train station we are 20 minutes away to the closest train station, so you have to go by bus. The express bus was running on a limited schedule due to the snow. So no you didn't have to just live in Westchester or some other outside county to have had a difficult time. Hurray to you for having been able to go to work. I think when you're making 200K plus a year, a 25,000 bonus and you could come in whenever you feel like it and not be harrassed by a lunatic secretarial supervisor who says you are late if you clock in at 9:01, regardless of whats going on outside shit I would be skiing to work. And I am not exaggerating when I say she expects you to be there at your desk by your scheduled start time regardless. You are considered late by ONE minute!!!!
Please get off your high horse and try to live in the reality of things. I congratulate your success and what you have chosen to do, but don't criticize others for having made a choice to stay home on a day that they may have felt compelled to for whatever reason.
The secretarial service's department decision to send out that ridiculous email with all the names goes to show exactly what type of lunatic we secretaries have had to deal with day in and day out. From the fact that she lacks the skills to communicate with the secretarial staff effectively to the mere fact that she doesn't even bother returning phone calls or replying to emails. By the way she does that to whomever she doesn't feel is important enough. Meaning junior partners. She is so far up Davis' and DiCarmine's ass that the secretarial staff has dubbed her Davis' and DiCarmine's puppet. She is pro-attorney its frankly disgusting. She doesn't stand by her staff whatsoever, even knowingly when they are good hard working secretaries. There are a-oles to say the least of attorneys there whom I have seen make their secretaries day a living hell because they think their shit don't stink, yet if they go to her and tell her that he or she is being difficult, etc., she would say "oh he is so nice, i never heard of a problem" Its just sickening. Yes i was one of the legal secretaries laid off, but considering I was working for one of the few nice attorneys there, who unfortunately is titled "junior partner" and had no say with regards to my getting laid off, hey better yet, he wasn't even told or warned until it happened. That goes to show you what respect they have even for partners that don't hold the "senior" in front. Nevertheless i feel blessed actually that it happened. I am going to struggle these next few months if nothing comes through right away, but i always have the faith that when one door closes, two will open and for the better. I wish i can get out of the legal industry entirely as i feel 90% of you lawyers especially at the big wig firms are just pompous, condescending a-holes. Something of which you 61, 62 have so very well described yourselves as being. Unfortunately for me in the reality of thingsy i may not be able to work outside of the legal industry if i want to come close to making what i made. My hope is to be fortunate enough to work for someone as nice, caring as the person I worked with. At the end of the day its not just about me, I have my daughter's well being to think about, and if that means having to stay within the legal industry, then so be it. I consider myself to be a great secretary, a team player and was well liked amongst my group of attorneys and co- legal secretaries.
For the record 61, 62 I was one of the 80 secretaries who called in that day, and I would do all over again if i had to. Why? Because at the end of the day it doesn't matter how hard you work, and believe me i worked pretty hard, got great reviews, but because I worked for a Jr. Partner and the secretarial to attorney ratio was being restructured, told to us by the Director of HR of the reasons we were being let go, I was laid off., not because of performance or having called in on Monday the day of the storm. With that said, you and those who commented like you can take those comments and go to.........well lets just leave it at that.
Just remember no one is safe, not even you. Next time you want to comment, have something more constructive to say. Do you actually believe this decision was from Monday to Wednesday? This was a decision that was planned weeks ago.
Would you or your collegues ever consider turning down your bonuses or cutting your ridiculous overpaid salaries so that these lay offs would have been avoided, if asked. I think not. I remember back in December/January most of you blogged on this very same website how pissed you were that your bonuses were cut in half. Yet we the secretarial staff (a) do not get a bonus and (b) did not even get a raise, much less was not even told that we were not getting one. It was in more ways than one I guess to be assumed. So essentially we were not even respected. They demanded professionalism, but yet failed in every capacity to be professional with us. And you have the nerve to even suggest and/or imply that whomever called in that day deserved to be fired.
I sincerely which you 61, 62 great success at Dewey, but just remember , no one is safe. At the end of the day these pompous partners from Davis and DiCarmine on down think about the bottom $$$$. Would they ever consider a pay cut? I think not.
I actually laughed when i read Davs' memo stating "let us all be supportive to those directly affected during this difficult time" Difficult time for who? He's still getting his million dollar salary! Bunch of hypocrits, disengenuous a-holes.
My comment was actually suppose to be addressed to 68 and 71, not 61, 62. My apologies to 61, 62.
the secrets is out: the secretaries at this firm feel like they are treated like pieces of poo, so why would they drag themselves outside and spend 4 or more hours traveling roundtrip in the snow to be treated like feces? if you treat people with a little respect and dignity they will go out of their way for you, if you don't, then talk to the hand...for people who are obviously very intelligent, many lawyers are unfortunately incapable of empathy unless it has to do with someone they deem to be on their level. does going to law school turn your tiny little hearts to stone? wtf?
and so somebody left their kid with a neighbor to get to work, congratulations.. your an ahole, do you really think the powers that be give a shit and that it will keep you from losing your job? think again. and sorry but if I had a kid I wouldn't be leaving them with some neighbor who could possibly molest them. I guess the moral of this story is that secretaries love their kids more than lawyers do
and about lawyers openly complaining about their measly half bonuses in front of administrative staff, whose entire salary is likely less than that bonus. too bad that half bonus can't buy them some class. pathetic.
ps.. when lawyers are laid off I never hear secys saying they deserved it -- they seem to actually feel bad and sorry about it...(real actual feelings... the lower class.. aren't they adorable!?)
p.s.s. many of the poor saps who were laid off came in on that snowy Monday... I bet they wish they had stayed in bed
105 your comment could not have been said any better! I always said that 99.9% of law students must take a special course to become aholes once they graduate, pass the bar and start working for firms like Dewey LeBouef and all the like! I leave the .1% in congratulating those lawyers that actually practice law without any self-interest, greed or excessive monetary value and that treat support staff with respect and as their equal. Its a shame that its only .1%. It does not take much to be nice, caring and say thank you instead of expecting things because "its our job." I guess its your job as lawyers to be a-holes! Good Riddance!.
