Nationwide Layoff Watch (Sort Of): Haynes & Boone Makes Minor Adjustments
Technically, there were layoffs at Haynes & Boone yesterday. But our cadre of Texas readers don’t need to start storing canned goods in their hats just yet. The Texas based firm made minor cuts to its New York office. A firm spokesperson released this statement to Above the Law:
We can confirm that Tuesday, Haynes and Boone terminated one associate, one of counsel and one staff in our New York City office. These terminations resulted from the upcoming departure of two New York-based corporate partners who are leaving by mutual agreement. Affected attorneys and staff were recruited specifically to support the departing partners.
Just as importantly, the spokesperson adds:
At this time, we don’t expect any further attorney or staff layoffs in our New York office or in any of the firm’s other eleven national and international offices.Haynes and Boone continues to look for good opportunities to strategically expand in New York and in other markets … We expect to add new partners to our NYC Finance and Bankruptcy groups soon to meet current market demands.
Add partners? Finance? Demand? Are we talking about the same “New York City?”
Though, if Haynes & Boone is looking to poach partners, maybe managing partner Terry Connor will get to scream “I drink your milkshake. I drink it up!” That would be fun.

You have to be 100% behind someone, before you can stab them in the back.
Crazy biglaw, they think totem pole alive!

I don't see any connection at all between this guy and There Will Be Blood. Elie, you do know that that movie was based in California, not Texas, right? Other than the fact that there is also oil in Texas, what is the connection?
haynes and boone is a great firm if you are a log cabin republican. their houston office has a high percentage of gay and lesbian attys. they also have an unofficial affirmative action program for gays and lesbians. in the obama-nation, such firms will do quite well.
Hook?

Who are they kidding? H&B has been doing stealth layoffs for months, both associates and partners. This NY news is just part of the story. I've heard through the grapevine that they're looking to trim upwards of 60-75 attorneys across the firm.
It's laughable that management, which was convinced by some consultant that they need to "merge or die", picked now to absorb an IP practice in California. Who thought that was a good idea?

gayboone a/k/a brokeback boone has about 6 gay partners in their houston office - a number of which came out of the closet after being in a normal marriage
they are very clubby and viscious
i also hear that one of the gay partners likes to get friendly with summer associates who are willing to take a walk on the wild side
i was a summer there a few years ago - one of the male partners in the houston office grabbed my ass - i liked it and i told him so ...
