Northwestern’s Macabre Humor

You know what we need right now? A bit of levity! This comes courtesy of some Northwestern law students with time to burn.

Wigmore Follies 2009 - Get An Economy from Wigmore Follies on Vimeo.

Oh, 1Ls. Don’t worry. Everything is going to be fine. Eventually. I think.

Maybe they would have a better chance of getting a job if they used their time to study and not make unfunny videos. Just a thought.

Also, you would think with all those in-person interviews, Northwestern would have found some people with decent personalities.

8, the NU interviews are pretty pointless. The adcom asked me a bunch of stock questions, the answers to which were in my admissions packet. Then she gave me a pamphlet and encouraged me to take a "self-guided tour." I'm really not sure why they bother. It was good practice for OCI, though.

Congratulations ATL for posting the most unentertaining short film I have ever seen. Short films are by their nature kitschy and irrelevant, but this one takes the cake.

Part of me thinks you want the economy to fail, you need the economy to fail, so you'll post anything that supports your "sinking ship" message. Anything.

ATL: Beyond Thunderdome, a script

scene begins. [Bob Seger's "Turn the Page" plays as we find ourselves inside a mercedes].

we see the driver's hand, skinny, pale, calloused from gripping a leather-wrapped steering wheel since the age of 16. In the passenger seat lies a tattered bag on which the words "law school" can faintly be seen. The driver reaches one hand in and pulls out a worn, decaying offer letter from a many-decades-now-defunct law firm. The driver sighs, crumples the letter and throws it in the back seat, where it lands on a US News and World Report Guide to the Best Graduate Schools, open to the law Best Law Schools page. The driver opens up the sun roof and we pan out to see that he is not alone; there are dozens of mercedes and lexuses driving down this lonesome stretch of highway. As the camera pans out further, we see the shell of an old building, and the remnants of what used to be New York, or is it Chicago? or is it LA? The driver pulls out his iPhone and sends a one-word mass text to everyone in his address book: "ATL." Jump cut to five different drivers: all white, a bit pale, but well-dressed and all possessing an extreme air of self-importance; some of them are wearing seersucker and pink polo shirts. They all nod knowingly.

The music fades and a narrator's voice begins:
"It all began with the economy. First the firms collapsed in on themselves, then it was the law schools. Lawyers wandered the streets, clutching their diplomas, begging passersby to tell them they were important....but no one did. They tried to find mates, but could find none. "Law School hot" meant nothing to these commoners; society had reverted to its pre-lawyer equilibrium and the attorneys were now returned to the societal position of their adolescence..

The lawyers were ignored: it was just like high school, and college. The dark times. Knowing there was nothing left for them in these cities, the lawyers set out to find a place where they could re-settle and create a new, more boring, arrogant and ugly society. Rumor had spread amongst the lawyers of a place, deep in the desert of self-absorption; a place where people still cared about their law school rankings, their former salaries and the other mundane aspects of their shallow lives; a place where the words "second-tier" still stung. They had to go, it was their only hope.

There was only one thing....if they went there, each of them would have to battle each other in a place called the Thunderdome, with only their laptops and limited wit. To win a battle in thunderdome would ensure their place in society, allowing them to lord over everyone else. To lose would be death, or at least a return to their parents subdivision and perhaps a downgrade to an entry-level BMW. It was a gamble, but one they were willing to take if the culture of superiority was to survive lawpocalypse.

[cue theme music]

This is a shame, because Wigmore Follies has been consistently impressive for many years at NULS. I went for the free beer my first year and was blown away. Never missed a show. It's always the first weekend in April, so this video must be some kind of prelude. I'm sure the actual show will be much, much better than this. They should post some of the song and dance numbers from last year's show.

65 and others,

I constantly get the vibe on these comments that lawyers & law students were all social pariahs before law school. The odd thing is that they believe that law school suddenly makes them cool because they have a graduate degree. Meanwhile, the well-adjusted lawyers liked by our peers during our youth & able to get laid without implying we intended on being rich some day are clumped in with all of you losers. Is it that rare to find people who are able to balance fun & goals?
