Sign of the Times: Orrick Offers Jobs in Wheeling, WV to GULC Students
There’s an interesting job opening Orrick is extending to a number of recent graduates. We got this information from Georgetown University Law Center, but we understand that Orrick has posted this job at a couple of top schools:
Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP (Wheeling, WV) - Orrick currently has an excellent opportunity for recent law school graduates in its Global Operations Center in Wheeling, WV. The position is an entry level Career Attorney in its dynamic and growing Emerging Companies Group (ECG).
The economy is bad. Everybody knows that. But are we really living in a world where students at the nation’s best law schools are looking at “career attorney” jobs in West Virginia? Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But this can’t be what GULC students were hoping for when they began their law school journey.
A tipster explains exactly what we are talking about, after the jump.
It’s important to get a little back story on Orrick’s Global Operation Center in Wheeling. A tipster provides some salient details:
I had heard about the Wheeling “office” a year ago from a friend of mine who had summered there and who now is an associate. It apparently is an “insourcing” office that does low-rate legal work, usually using young contract attorneys who recently graduated from second and third-tier schools. The fact that they now think that they can get Gtown folks seemed to me to be a pretty good indication of the job market for attorneys.
A current Orrick associate had this to offer:
That’s nuts. I didn’t know we were doing that…Yeah, that job is to help startup companies that can’t afford Orrick rates with their routine corporate work so that we can keep them as venture capital, IP and M&A clients. But I didn’t know we were hiring GULC grads either. We usually hire WVU or Pitt grads out there.
The upshot of all this seems to be just further evidence that the job market is, in fact, absolutely terrible for everybody. Welcome to 2009.

niice good news.
I'm guessing there are a maximum of 3 law students at GULC that envisioned themselves living in WVA at any point.
Elie is just jealous he didn't go to a prestigious school like WVU. You're really a fat fuck.
Isn't this also what Chapman Bigglesworth is doing?
Isn't this also what Chapman Bigglesworth is doing?
I thought GULC was in West Virginia because everyone there looks like they are from West Virginia.
This is a great opportunity for an attorney that has no social skills. Dating is cheap in WV and you don't need consent to have sex with barnyard animals. Heehaw.
GeorgeTTTown Law
Orrick career attorneys have real purty mouth.
7 - You refer to your mother as a barnyard animal? You should be ashamed.
Because GULC students are so much better off cramming into BigLaw positions that can't absorb them and will expel them 6 months later? But, God Forbid, West Virginia!
Actually doesn't sound like a bad deal.
Not to mention if you work closely with some startup that takes off, you might be able to exit to their legal dept.
Hiring GULC students to live in Wheeling? This story, more than any post about layoffs, shows how bad it is out there now.
So I guess now an alternative to BigLaw is working in a BigCoalMine?
Whatever Orrick is paying for this work, I know attorneys with 20 years' experience who would gladly relocate to Wheeling, WV and do it at that rate, because they haven't been able to find anything else at all for months, and they know how limited their future options are.
The older you get, the harder it is to find a new job if you don't have a book of business to carry around with you (e.g., laid-off in-house attorneys).
I'm a 3L at HLS and an editor on the L. Rev. I just got a job offer from S&C's Global Operations Center in Bumfuck, Arkansas.
Times are tough.
Does this mean if you are hired, you can work in a cave and draft all your legal pleadings on a slate of bedrock?
It says plainly on Orrick's website that no lawyers practice at the location.
I play for keeps Elie.
12 = Orrick hiring partner charge of Wheeling hiring.
12, Have you ever been to Wheeling? It is the grimest, ugliest town in the lower 48.
And 7, while dating might be cheap and easy for an attorney in Wheeling, I generally prefer to date women who still have all of their teeth.
Huge bloodletting comng on 04/03/09. Firms will have banked their March time by then and squeezed a few last hours out of their associates.
mark my words
I think I gots the black lung, Pa.
*cough, cough*
Things must be pretty bad at Orrick if they are hiring from GULC.
Wheeling, WV.
Population: 29,000, down from 61,000 in 1940.
Median household income: $27,000.
"Bus transportation to points throughout North America is available from Wheeling through Greyhound Lines." -- Wikipedia.
Even TTT liberal arts majors turned T14 law graduates can live like a big king fish in a coal-encrusted pond.
Didn't realize Georgetown had a law school--is it only a part-time evening program?
uhhh what's wrong with taking this job? And how is it a single indication that the entire job market is poor? Answers are not so clear.
I'm an unemployed GULC 08 grad (the firm where I summered gave offers to less than half of the associates back in 07). The crappiest part about this job is that it requires you to take the OH, PA or WV bar. I'd consider it if I hadn't already taken two state bars since graduation(passed one last year and waiting on the results of the second one). I can't imagine signing up for yet another bar on my own dime.
Unfortunately, this is one of the best jobs that has been posted on Georgetown's job site in a while. Other gems are the ads for the Yodice firm (requires you to post your LSAT on your application) and another firm in Maryland that requires top 30% standing, but only pays around $50k.
Career services tries, but is of little help. The advice I have gotten is to network (I've done lots of "informational interviews") and to get a part time gig at Barnes and Noble.
I think I'll be living at home with the parents for the foreseeable future.
Damn, if only I knew Welling West Virginia was such a viable town I would have tapped that ass.
The Yodice Law Firm, FTW!
26 raises a good point: How do they expect GULCers to be able to pass the West Virginia bar?
I wonder why Orrick is hiring here while pushing back the start dates for new Associates and laying off attorneys? The pay must be really bad.
26, the WV bar is easy. It is 15 true/false questions (sample from last year's exam: "Murder is illegal?" True or False).
For the character exam, you need only be able to sign a certification that you haven't been convicted of incest more than 3 times in the last five years.
Go for it, GULC boy.
GOODWIN PROCTER MEMO:
All associates that have previously been informed of Fall 2009 start dates shall start on November 7, 2009. Litigation associate should report to their assigned office on that date. Corporate associates should report for one year secondment program to Wheeling Coal Co., mine shaft #7. Additionally, corporate associates will enjoy fully subsidized health insurance as well as free gloves and miners helmet. Following this program, all corporate associates will receive a 1 month sabbatical and a $10,000 stipend to recover from black lung.
Moving expenses to Wheeling, WV will be reimbursable but will constitute taxable income.
if you have any questions, please contact [redacted] at [redacted]. Thank you.
B.O.O.M.
WV = GULC of the lower 48
Of course this is bound to happen to GULC. If law firms can't sustain their recruiting levels / associate numbers, how the hell can this law school a/k/a The Factory sustain its output? Net effect: GULC reputation sinks even farther. Good luck to the millions affected.
Orrick forgot to mention they have top 5% GPA requirement for GULC students. Obviously this doesn't apply to the rest of the T14 where even the bottom 10% is welcome.
29, that was a good one. Especially in light of the fact that 26 STILL can't get over the fact that he fucked up in the summer of 2007. It's 2009, 26, get a job, move out of that basement apartment on the Hill, and take the WV bar....you can do it!!
I would rather live in West Virginia than Texas.
26--next time you make my coffee at Murky, don't take so freaking long.
Country roads, take me home
to the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama,
Take me home, country roads
Country roads, take me home
to the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama,
Take me home, country roads
HEY! All you assholes hating on GULC can KISS MY BLACK ASS!
And Elie, you're not big-boned, YOU'RE FAT!
20 is right. At least it's still tax season. Maybe they'll keep me on until at least 4/15.
Most of the GULC haters are Vandy, UCLA, and USC students mad that the door to the T14 slammed right in their faces.
It would be really nice if Orrick first reached out to the 100+ associates they recently laid off who are unable to get jobs in this market before soliciting others for this opportunity.
Hey, a job is a job.
How many law firms aren't in a total hiring freeze right now?
And don't bother with some "oh yeah I go to Vandy and sure wish I could get a job in WV!" This WV job is the for the nightcrawlers.
take the PA bar, do this Orrick crappy job for 1 year, then lateral into a Philadelphia firm.
Positives: 1) Overalls are business casual in Wheeling! 2) You can finally hook up with your sister (or even your Mom!) and not worry about the cops! 3) You can get a trailer house on the side of a hill way cheaper than you can get a co-op in New York!
Negatives: 1) Scary men keep telling you "you shor got a perty mouth" 2) Having to remember to squeal like a pig while being sodomized by hillbillys. 3) Losing most of your teeth by the time you're 30.
Wheeling to NYC: All y'alls biglaw jobs is MINES!
The OH, PA or WV bar requirement is to weed out classist jerks. Stay where you are, thanks.
26 - Your Career Services office tried? That beats mine! They just told me to go network then cock-punched me on the way out.
But you really should consider the WV job. I hear it's very diversified, you split time between defending unsafe coal mine operators and then get to actually mine coal the rest of the time! WIN WIN!
A lateral from Wheeling, 47? Have you ever met an attorney from Wheeling? No? That's because no one can lateral out of Wheeling, even to places like Philly. With the layoffs and dissolving firms in Philly, no one is lateralling into Philly firms right now. When the economy picks up, the GULC graduates who went to work in Wheeling will be competing with the laid off associates from NY firms. Wonder how that will turn out.
Because of the economy, 2009 grads need to take jobs in places like Wheeling, and realize that is where they will spend the rest of their careers. There is no escape from Wheeling.
49,
What does class have to do with anything? Does being licensed somewhere besides OH, PA or WV make a person classist?
Someone could argue that making people take another bar exam if they have already passed others could be classist because it weeds out people who can't afford to take another bar. Is Orrick going to pay for anyone to take another bar exam? I doubt it.
Taking bar exams is time consuming and expensive. It might not be worth it if the pay at the Orrick job isn't any good.
I heard that they found a new use for sheep in WV-----
WOOL!
Oh those poor Georgetown students. At least they are receiving job offers.
You fucking snobs! So sorry the world doesn't owe you a cushy living and is now rewarding the kids who studied math and science rather than history/polisci/psychology/etc. and figured legal services to rich corporations was something the world couldn't live without. You should all be locked in a room and kept their until you read Atlas Shrugged or the Bible or both.
Has Orrick announced the details of the two-tier track yet? I know they're leaving lockstep, but is anything besides that known?
48=victory!
Don't be so harsh. I bet that a person who took this for lack of better options would do fine IF the economy turns around. Don't forget the boom years. Firms really reduce their requirements when times are good. The problem is, I don't see the economy turning around any time soon.
It seems to escape most posters that this story actually has nothing to do with GULC.
The same job was posted at plenty of other schools.
When I interviewed at Orrick SF (last year) they assured me that I wouldn't be doing a lot of doc review because most of it is done by attorneys and contract attorneys in a big facility in West Virginia whose sole job is doing doc review.
48=victory!
Such mean spirited remarks about GULC are ridiculous, and serve no one, All top 15 schools get many offers on many levels, which they post and make available to their students. And thank God for that in these historic times, GULC has in its day program top students, who get hired as quickly as other top students at top firms, even more often because GULC turns out smart, ambitious students who think like lawyers from the get-go. THat this offering is now a media event on ABL is strange. Are you not all aware how bad things are in the entire nation, and getting worse.
It's time we all stopped trying denigrate and scratch each others eyes out and started being grateful for what's being offered without the value judgement of you deserve more. None of us deserve anything. That is a fucked up concept, that will fuck you up much more than accepting what's going on today with humility and grace.
The two books filled with unrealistic gibberish most likely to fuck up an impressionable idiot's mind with ludicrous and harmful ideas, and a hateful view toward society? Atlas Shrugged and the Bible. Go crawl back under your rock, 56.

$21/hr is the rate for this job if you get it through a temp agency. What does Orrick pay direct hires?
Good job 48, lol
I don't understand all the venom towards GULC. People should chill out.
T14 not at GULC
T-14 = No jobbie job. It is great watching the tables turned. All those people you diss for going to TTT schools work at the smaller firms reviewing your resume now that you are unemployed. I specifically weed out T-14 "entitlement" lawyers as the better ones come from State Schools. It is so much fun. Please keep applying.
West Virginia: Where men are men, and sheep are cautious.
Get over the inferiority complex 68.
I made a wrong turn once in West Virginia was sadistically GANG-GULCed by a bunch of Billies from the Hills. I have never been the same since.
I had sex with a platypus once. Turns out she was just a GULC night student.
Disparaging Georgetown just outs you as one of the following:
(a) Insecure TTT
(b) Insecure T15-25 that would insufferably defend the T14 distinction if your school ever moved up the rankings
(c) Bottom half at Cornell, NU, or Duke, desperately seeking some reason to feel superior to someone.
I've never heard anyone inside the T10 bash Georgetown. Why would they? Those schools are clearly more prestigious. It would be unseemly - like a grown man beating up a little kid.
67: Get over our "tone"--this is how we roll at ATL. If you can't deal, go home, Shirley.
67 - Its alright. Entirely normal for you to still be breast feeding at the age of 30. I am sure your mom loves it.
Say hi to your mother for me.
3,500sq. ft. barn and a mule.
More evidence that it pays to attend GULC

Being GANG-GULCed is nothing to joke about.
Shitty firms recruiting for a shitty job in a shitty state. Sounds about right for GeorgeTTTown.
I have a number of T6 friends that I know for a fact would take a job like this in a heartbeat. It's better than making $45k working for a solo (and they're getting rejected from those jobs too).
Posters making fun of this job are completely clueless about how bad it is out there. It's raining T6, V20 resumes.
I went to GULC at night, so you all can SUCK MY BALLS!
The Managing Partner of Orrick is from Wheeling, so he brought jobs back to his hometown.
all these wv jokes explain why lawyers are considered by all to be so lame. seriously, get original people. incest jokes are as trite as it gets.
you can bet that GULC kids will submit at least 20-40 resumes.
The Managing Partner of Orrick is from Wheeling, so he brought jobs back to his hometown.
i think incest is hilarious.
Good to see that bashing on West Virginia remains the sole form of racism that our country not only tolerates but embraces.
Wow, all the West Virginia jokes are so clever and original. That being said, Wheeling and the northern panhandle are more Pennsylvania/Ohio than West Virginia.
April will be the cruelest month. The full horror of Q1 billings will hit the partners full in the face, and they will realize that they must hustle people out the door before good friday and the jewish holidays---when people won't be around to take their access cards off them. And they will need to do it in April to avoid having the summers witness an epic massacre.
Is it still incest if you had your name legally changed?
85,
Dude, you're such a retard (worse that Timmy and Jimmy combined) that you don't even know what racism is. You must be from WV. I seriously hate you guys.
Incest is not illegal in WVa
73: I guarantee that Columbia and NYU kids bash GULC (unfarily). Much more prestige-conscious than anyone I've met at NU, Duke, Cornell, Berkeley, Chicago, or HYS
Are there asslobsters aplenty in West Virginia?
sleepless in Seattle
I've temped for Orrick in Wheeling, WV.
It's a very nice office building, and there's a beautiful view of the river from many of the offices. There definitely were not any full time associates working there. But there's a strip bar across the street called Dangerous Curves.
Some of the commenters will feel silly when they get laid off in a few weeks or have their offers rescinded. Hold that T-14 diploma tight in the unemployment line and make sure to remind the bank and your landlord that went to X law school when your checks start bouncing. They will be forced to bow down to the awesomeness of your pedigree and forgive your financial transgressions.
P.S. I hear mortgage and student loan companies are much less likely to demand repayment from T-14 graduates too!
What's the difference between a unemployed T-14 graduate and an unemployed TTT graduate in this economy?
Answer: About $100k in debt and a much higher cost of living among the "coastal elite".
Everyone is bashing everyone it seems. Have you read the police blotter in the NY Daily News? People are getting hit over the head and robbed in daylight all over the place. It's every man for himself. Its a Bashorama out there, and of course, ATL is a mirror image of the street.
Bash, Bash,Bash! Feel better? Got a job yet? Lose your job yet? Pink slip are going to everyone: HLS grads, to everyone. Check your nasty face out in the mirror. Who'd want to see that malevolent face in the elevator, and hear that fork-tongued voice, going up or down? My advice to us all is be appealing, become assertive, and get real good at self defense.
The ship be sinking...
95 - Schools outside of the T-14 cost a lot of money too. They are alsolocated in major cities. Not everyone gets into a cheap state school or gets a free ride to a private school.
what is the difference between a "career attorney" and an associate? How much does the former get paid?
I would guess that a career attorney is not on the partnership track, while an associate is on the partnership track.
Temp agencies are paying attorneys 21/hr to temp at Orrick. Orrick probably pays more to direct hires.
Forget about about Orrick...We need to find new ways in all things: t
Cops Bust Stool Fool
Ohio man arrested for drunk driving on a homemade vehicle
MARCH 31--In a law enforcement first, Ohio cops this month arrested a man for drunk driving on a motorized bar stool. That's right, a motorized bar stool, which can be seen below in a police evidence photo. According to cops, Kile Wygle, 28, crashed his bar stool near his Newark home earlier this month and called 911 due to his injuries. When an officer arrived and asked Wygle what happened, he answered, "I wrecked my bar stool." According to a Newark Police Division report, a copy of which you'll find here, Wygle's homemade ride is powered by a Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engine. Wygle noted that the bar stool could hit nearly 40 miles per hour, but that he was only going 20 when he wiped out late in the afternoon on March 4 (a witness told police that he spotted someone driving a "strange motorized machine" before the crash). A plastered Wygle, who failed a series of field sobriety tests, was charged with DUI and driving with a suspended license, both misdemeanors. His bar stool was not impounded. (5 pages)

Amen, 73; the GULC bashing is unwarranted and the bashers bash too much methinks.

Wheeling is a horrible Rust Belt city, with none of the 'charm' of Pittsburgh or Cleveland. It's like the worst parts of Ohio, the Rust Belt, and WV all rolled into one. Even the rest of WV hates Wheeling. Have fun betting on the dog track at Wheeling Island!
73 -- For the MF'ing win.

Top 10 school alum
I just applied...thanks ATL. Job is a job.
T-25 3L
From the Orrick website:
No lawyers practice here, just those who support them.
http://www.orrick.com/offices/goc/index.asp
So either A) this position doesn't "practice" law in Orrick's estimation, or B) Orrick doesn't want to fess up to it's clients that it has lawyers practicing in some backwoods out post like Wheeling.
Either way...why would any GULC grad take this job, even ITE? Are things really that bad???
48 - you are my idol. Sooo funny.
If anything, this post just shows me what elitist fucks you are. Many people would love this job. I hope you all lose your grossly overpaid big firms gigged and have to take a turn living in the real world. I also hope you get hit by a bus and die.
Im extremely appauled at the comments on this page. WV is a great state to live in and I would rather have a toothless nobody working for me than heartless, immature peices of crap like some of you who are commenting on this page. Seriously grow up! It's rude people like yourselves who make the world the horrible place it is today. I hope you all feel good about the choices you make! God Bless!
