UNC Law School Disavows the Disavowal of Wannabe Bunny

For those just tuning in, earlier today, we wrote about Stephanie Haney, a 2L at UNC who hopes to be one of Playboy’s Girls of the ACC. (See Career Alternatives for Law Students: Playboy Bunny.)

After our initial post went up, Maxine Eichner — a professor at UNC School of Law — emailed Above the Law directly to say that Ms. Haney was not a student at the law school. We updated the post and wondered:

Who is Stephanie Haney? Does claiming to be a law student really help you get into Playboy? Perhaps Haney didn’t get the memo after an accidental admission offer? Is she actually a student but using an assumed name? We don’t know the answers, but we’re trying to get them.

We sent out some inquiries and now we have answers for you. Stephanie Haney is enrolled at UNC as Stephanie Shimek. Haney is her maiden name. Here’s a note from UNC Law.

Dear Ms. Hill:

Thank you for checking in. Stephanie Shimek is a 2L at UNC School of Law. We believe that Ms. Shimek did not intend to cause any confusion about her identity; she has personal reasons for a recent change in her last name.

Regards,

Fair enough.

After the jump, commenters weigh in and Mrs. Shimek/Ms. Haney explains the personal reasons behind her name change.

Not surprisingly, our commenters noticed Professor Eichner’s honest mistake:

Ironically, she’s in Professor Maxine Eichner’s family law class!

Perhaps Professor Eichner can be forgiven for not noticing the resemblance. We assume the professor is focused more on Haney’s intellectual attributes than her physical ones.

It turns out that Stephanie (Haney) Shimek has been in the papers before:

She’s employed full-time as a legal technician at the Joint Law Center on the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., where her husband, Josh Shimek, is stationed in the United States Marine Corps.

She’s also a Hooters girl.

Mrs. Shimek/Ms. Haney wrote us an e-mail explaining the name change. She clarified that her legal name is Stephanie Shimek, but that she is going through a divorce and will be returning to the name Stephanie Haney when the divorce is finalized. She also asked us to note that she and her current legal husband, Josh Shimek, remain very close friends.

Stephanie, good luck with your legal and extracurricular endeavors. Also, If you’re ever in NYC (oww. Kash! Stop hitting me. I’m just jok… is that a freaking taser?), umm … beat Gonzaga!
