Above The Law’s Inaugural Law Revue Contest 2009
The Finalists

Law Revue Video Contest.jpgIt’s the moment (some of) you have been waiting for. We’re ready to announce the six finalists in ATL’s First Ever Law Revue Video Contest.

We received many (many, many) submissions. We ordered sushi delivered to our SoHo office and pulled Biglaw hours to watch them all. As you may imagine, after many (many, many) hours of videos, our eyes were starting to glaze over, our ears were beginning to bleed, and our appreciation for the delicate intersection of legalese and funnies was beginning to fade.

But these six videos managed to shine through all that and make us laugh. Earlier this week, we gave you the (Dis)Honorable Mentions. (Excuse our harsh judging of those — we enjoyed channeling the acerbity of ATL commenters.) Now, we give you the finalists, hailing from NYU (2), UVA (2), Boston University, and Northeastern School of Law. We dare you to try to watch them without wetting your pants with laughter. Or at least emitting a little chuckle.

We’re also asking you to choose your favorite. Find the videos after the jump, and take our reader poll to help crown the first winner of the ATL’s Inaugural Law Revue Contest. Polls close Sunday at midnight.

In no particular order (beyond alphabetical), here are our finalists:

Boston University — My New Outline

Elie: This guy is way too jacked to be a law student. I must assume he’s a townie, but it is still a “wicked awesome” law school / Boston version of my new haircut.

Lat: Of the many parodies of My New Haircut that we saw, this was by far the best.

Kash: This video is in the f***ing zone.

New York University — Barbri Girl

Elie: Simple premise. Flawless execution. The guy stays within himself vocally, and pulls off a pink shirt. The girl keeps it constantly interesting.

Lat: Great lyrics. Ear candy. And eye candy — especially the guy, who looks great shirtless (saw him in last year’s NYU Law Revue). What’s not to like?

New York University — What Would Arthur Miller Do?

Elie: Using little girls instead of little boys aces the “clear parody” debate. South Park references are always funny.

Lat: Tremendously well-executed. NYU has got talent!

Northeastern School of Law — The Gunner

Elie: The gunner’s name is “Lion.” Brilliant. In fact, the whole thing is brilliant. This will be my next Halloween costume.

Lat: Hilarious. Never a dull moment (which can’t be said for so many law revue videos).

Kash: This should be required viewing at law school orientation.

University of Virginia — Sweet Addie

Elie: Hands down the best voice in the group.

Lat: I’m a sucker for a cute boy with a guitar. I now know that Tony Danza doesn’t live in my wall.

University of Virginia — Hot Bodies of Law

Elie: There wasn’t nearly enough T&A in the submissions. Thank you UVA for taking one small step in the right direction.

Lat: Readers, please don’t discount this video because you’ve seen it before (and know some of the jokes). Watch it a second time, and fall in love all over again — with the exceedingly clever lyrics, slick dance moves, and Supreme scenery.

Kash: These boys are wasting their talent away at law firms. I’m hoping they’ll continue to perform post-UVA as the Biglaw Boyz.

Polls close Sunday at midnight.

I guess since BU students don't have jobs they can just spend all day voting on ATL. It is ok, but nowhere near the production values of the NYU Videos (which yes, is because NYU is full of wannabe actors, not lawyers). Also, how can it be a Law Revue finalist when there isn't any actual signing involved.

Crap.

27: That's because UT is one of the few groups that produces a full-length musical (with an a capella performance during intermission). The fact that UT's Assault and Flattery (http://www.youtube.com/user/bushwacklefoetus) didn't get to the finals obviates any credibility ATL has ever had.

Personally, I think Mystttal should be shitcanned and the job should be offered to me. I mean, the economy's pretty bad and I don't have a job yet. And I'm a 3L!

I think ATL should offer me a sweet job because I'm better at picking out good law student theatrical performances.

Suck it, Elie. And hire me, ATL!

The BU video should NOT be winning -- that was the worst one. Even in a contest for new haircut videos it loses to the Columbia one that was supposedly in the dishonorable mention list.

The NYU South Park and UVA Hot Bodies of Law videos are gold.

avatar
47 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, April 16, 2009 8:24 PM

I don't have a horse in this race.

BU basically just ripped off a (not terribly amusing) YouTube video, and they're winning this? A travesty.

BarBri Girl - only "joke" is the BarBri/Barbie pun. Second worst.

WWAMD - single joke, again, stretched out. But a lot of effort went into it. Still, only enough to edge out BarBri Girl.

The Gunner lacks a decent punchline (gunners get Fs - pretty obvious and well-worn "twist"); but some of the lion's actions/reactions are well observed. Well-deserved third.

Tough choice for first place between the remaining two. Con Luv is clever, but it becomes tiresome in its corniness by about the 2/3rds point, then annoying. Sweet Addie is the most original, but it goes on a verse too long.

Sweet Addie wins by a nose.

55 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, April 16, 2009 8:48 PM

I voted for BU then checked out the comments. Why all the bitterness? They really are the strongest video.

Break it down.

Arthur Miller - great parody, great production value, great singing, but the structures of the best punchlines are ripped directly from the South Park Movie without improvement. Also, it's a giant in-joke for an NYU prof - how accessible is that?

BarBri - This is the same joke for 3 minutes, and now I have that stupid song stuck in my head. Pass.

Lion Gunner - As best as I can tell, all this is is some dude acting like a dick in a lion costume. Like the soundtrack though.

Sweet Addie - Clever lyrics, funny visuals - but it's a shitty subject matter (yay drug use?) and it's only one guy. This is a law revue contest, not a "one dude showing off with a guitar with a guest appearance by a guy in a giant pill botlle costume" contest.

Hot Bodies - Congratulations, you can dress like nerds and write puns about constitutional law. Awesome gimmick - you had me absolutely riveted.

That leaves BU. Yeah, it's a parody of a viral video, but it's true to form with some original jokes, and it's not based on a cheap costume or gimmick.

Top 3:

1) My New Outline
2) Arthur Miller
3) Sweet Addie

56 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, April 16, 2009 9:01 PM

12 - "I guess since BU students don't have jobs they can just spend all day voting on ATL."
That doesn't make a whole lot of sense considering any law student with a job would likely still attempt to finish the current semester of school, but I digress. Your point, if I read you correctly (no easy task, friend) is that law students from BU do not have jobs. You are absolutely correct in that claim. We neither have jobs nor prospects. All is not lost, however - we have each other!!!

-BU top 15% 2L

avatar
60 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, April 16, 2009 9:20 PM

55 = Good observations.

My vote:

1) BU's My New Outline for its creative value
2) UVA's Hot Bodies of Law which I find well-put
3 UVA's Sweet Addie

BarBri girl is flat. Gunner is predictable. NYU's Arthur Miller lacks originality.

The second video you posted, about IT lawyers doing it in binary, started with an original and comical concept that became quite stupid, boring, and weird. I do not care to see these dorky law students faking orgasms. In fact, it rather disturbed me to the point of clicking the infamous "X".

But still, even based on these two videos, I agree with you that UT was robbed, because it had more original talent and moxy than any of the stupid finalists. Good job. Who cares if people reading this blog can't vote for you? Their choices were obviously very limited!!!

The Lion is the only one that rises to the level of passable humor. NYU ones are all production, no substance. BU is a shitty rip-off of a slightly less shitty youtube vid. Northeastern wins, hands down.

63 = Douche Bag and SGA President-elect Ling Kong.

Anyway, honestly found the BU video to at least be captivating and have some new jokes. The other videos didn't hold my attention for long.

And it isn't a "ripoff of a viral video," it's what we call a "parody." You like Weird Al has been trying to rip off pop music for all these years? It's funny because it makes fun of law school & the douche bags who made "My New Haircut," which, let's be honest, is less funny than any of the videos here in the finals.

Good luck to all!

118 - And it isn't a "ripoff of a viral video," it's what we call a "parody."

Parodies are humorous takes on serious works. Weird Al has made a career on doing parodies of other people's actual, not tongue-in-cheek, songs.

He does not make "parodies" of other comedy songs by rehashing another person's jokes with slight variations.

For instance, a "parody" of Dick in a Box entitled Sick in a Box, wherein the protagonist throws up in a box and gives it to his girlfriend, would a horrible rip-off, not a parody.

Also saying the video is funny because it "makes fun of..the douche bags who made "My New Haircut" is ridiculous. My New Haircut was clearly making fun of its subject matter, that particular breed of roided Jersey tunnel man.

The BU video was amusing, but it was an amusing ripoff.

I was going to say that Lat's comments might lead one to think he was either gay or just really secure in his sexuality. However, it's obvious now that some of you already knew he actually IS gay. As such, there is no need to make the comments.

Commenting on a straight guy who says gay things = acceptable, sometimes funny.

Commenting on a gay guy for saying gay things = pointless, discriminatory, and not funny. Carry on Lat, carry on.

I'm going to go ahead and say UVA 2006 was awesome, but it was all about the talent of that one performer. The writing is decent, but not stellar. As far as how it fits into a video contest... I don't see how a filmed stage performance counts as a video for the purpose of this competition. NYU has the best production value, however unfunny a lot of their lines are.

143:

Sweet Addie is a stage performance. I don't think that "stand alone video" was one of the criteria. Regardless, you are right that the videos posted from UVA 2006 are mainly about that one guy, but that doesn't make them less funny.

As to the rest of the vids, Columbia's New Haircut was at least twice as funny as BU's (though I did laugh at BU's highlighting part). Neither of the NYU videos were funny at all (though they had good production values ... for whatever that's worth). The Lion made me laugh just for being so strange, but overall it's a relatively limited joke and any one of us could have written the script. Sweet Addie was okay too, but it starts slow and I demand more than an acoustic ballad from my top choice. That leaves Con Luv as my winner - at least out of these 6 choices.

Columbia's My New Bluebook was OKAY, but that's it, just okay. BU's parody is by far the best video up here, although I was impressed with the south park quality of NYU Arthur Miller video. Con luv was alright, but not very creative, just a bunch of losers trying to pretend to be losers with wannabe lawschool sluts "dancing" in the background. That's what's wrong with NYU.

It's not clear if this is just 2009 or not. If so, why is the NYU BarBri Girl there? If not, why the hell isn't NYU's Bill It up there? Much funnier than either NYU video.

Although it should be noted that at NYU, they seem to save their real talent for the actual show - the video soloists are usually second tier, and the songs are by far not the funniest they have.

BU is funny, but it's not original. It's not a parody so much as a translation for the legal world.

NYU Barbri is well put together, but not funny. Is this a contest for laughs or entertainment? It loses on the former and is a great competitor for the latter.

NYU Miller - I'm not a fan.

Lion - I was amused, but thought it was just okay. High schoolers could have produced this.

Sweet Addie - Good singing, but the jokes are a little tiresome. Somebody needs to make fun of the people who abuse drugs to get ahead in law school; sorry, but you shouldn't be offended if you're doing something you know is wrong.

Con Luv - This is original, and awesome. Many laughs. I keep reading "it's a string of references to case law strung together." No, it's a string of references to case law that are subtextual references to dating and sex, set to music. It's bloody brilliant. I think the people who are angry about this one are nerds who have a hard time dating (it has hit too close to home).

That's over 400 consecutive votes for one video. On a Sunday afternoon. From the same locations. Whether it's a bot, or some sort of modified web browser to prevent cookies, or whatever, it's cheap.
