Legal Eagle Wedding Watch 3.22 and 3.29: Famous Grandpas Edition

Due to a glitch in the NYT’s online weddings section last week, today’s edition is a double feature. Trust us — it’s worth the wait! We have three choice entries, two of which feature scions of some of America’s most notable families.
1. Rian Balfour and Russell Marcus
Marvel at the prestige of these couples, after the jump.

1. Rian Balfour and Russell Marcus
(Buy them a comforter.)
The Case:
- We’ll start with the smart kids from the peasant families. This bride and groom met while attending Columbia, she as an undergrad and he as a law student. The bride has a JD, magna cum laude, from Duke, and the groom has an undergraduate degree from Florida State.
- Both are employed at respectable Manhattan law firms. Rian is in the tax department at Simpson Thacher, and Russell is at Clifford Chance.
The Case Against:
- They met when Rian switched seats on an airplane for the purpose of brazenly hitting on Russell.

2. Allison Circle and Robert Sassower
(Buy them a salad fork.)
The Case:
- The bride, who was summa at Syracuse, is an account manager for the New York Stock Exchange. The groom, who has an undergraduate degree from Washington University (St. Louis) and a law degree from Hofstra, is a vice president at a family-owned investment firm.
- Robert is the grandson of the late Max E. Oppenheimer, founder of the well-known New York investment bank.
- They are both extremely pretty.
The Case Against:
- Allison and Robert receive an automatic pretentious-consumerism deduction for registering for silver.
3. Maeve Townsend and David McKean
(Buy them a muffin pan.)
The Case:
- First things first: The bride is the daughter of Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and the granddaughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy, so the NYT Vows column is naturally in full swoon mode. LEWW was born without the Kennedy-adulation gene, but we’ll play along because this bride actually seems fairly cool. She graduated from BC, spent time in the Peace Corps, has a tattoo, and wore sneakers to her wedding. She’s currently finishing degrees in law and foreign service at Georgetown.
- The groom, who is two years her junior, went to Berkeley and has a JD from American.
- If the Vows column doesn’t provide enough cutesy glimpses into their courtship, their website fills in the gaps (we particularly like this).
- Oppenheimer grandkids register at Tiffany and Bergdorf Goodman; Kennedy grandkids register at Macy’s and Crate & Barrel. Discuss.
The Case Against:
- Their friends call them “Maevid.” Also, they have the whitest wedding party we’ve ever seen.
The Verdict:
Team Balfour-Marcus undeniably has the week’s best educational credentials, but unfortunately for Rian and Russell, they’re up against a Kennedy with the Vows column and sequined sneakers. Team Townsend-McKean takes the crown!
