Morning Docket 4.24.09

pirate ship.jpg* Kenya has emerged as the chosen venue to try piracy cases. This article is worth it just for the quotes from the Kenyan piracy lawyer. Just try to imagine how much cooler your life would be if you were a Kenyan Piracy lawyer instead of a Biglaw associate. [The New York Times]

* Florida Judge Thomas Stringer worked for years to establish himself as a trusted, competent man. “then last spring, the well-respected, married judge suddenly found his face splashed beside that of a troubled exotic dancer in a kimono,” including here at ATL, of course. Amazing. [The Associated Press]

* Attorney General Eric Holder dodged alternating attacks on Capitol Hill Thursday, with some Congressman telling him to release more documents on Bush-era torture, and some telling him to stop releasing them. [CNN]

Although the lead to the stripper story shoukld have included this from the article:

"It is axiomatic that 'Judge' and 'Stripper' showing up in a headline is never a good thing, especially if you happen to be the 'Judge[.]"

Maybe I'm being too picky, but that picture ain't no pirate ship. Looks a lot like the frigate U.S.S. Constitution to me...

Pirates, strippers and politicians? What's slow about that?

4 - I agree. I mean, couldn't Elie find a pic of a ship flying the Jolly Roger? Pesky details always seem to get in the way with this site.

Kenya? Kenya is the right place to try those scumbags? Screw that. I say when the US captures them we try them according to US piracy laws.

Who cares about the ship. You are all idiots and will never have jobs.

10 -- many would say that the American flag actually represents piracy. Not me, though. I am a patriot.

Women only belong in the kitchen or in the steno pool. Or in my office if its time for them to get an ass pounding.

Torture? Fraternity hazing is worse than the interrogation techniques used by the Bush administration against terrorists. Techniques which, by the way, saved thousands of American lives.

Did no one watch South Park last night?!?! Piracy and all things pirate related are not as sexy as you'd think...

I am currently a third year at Judge Stringer's alma mater. The BLSA renamed its chapter after him just before all this came out. The day the St. Pete Times broke the story, our dean sent out a very carefully worded, but professional email saying that there had been some accusations lodged against Judge Stringer, but Stetson was standing by its man during this difficult time. Immediately thereafter, a professor sent an "fyi" email to the entire Stetson community with a link to the story--describing the whole situation. It was really awkward.

From the article:

"The state agency that oversees judges dropped misconduct charges after Stringer, who stepped down in February and draws monthly retirement benefits of $8,069, agreed never to be a judge again."

That's a little better than being a permanently deferred Big Law associate drawing half-salary for life, while living in relatively low-cost Tampa, Fla. NOT A BAD DEAL.

Elie, you do realize that the shilling is the standard unit of currancy in Kenya, right?

There aren't any more documents because Sandy Burglar stuffed them all into his underwear.

Great image of an 18th Century US sloop of war, but it is by no means a pirate ship. Should have checked with me first.

Also, let us all remember that "Talk Like A Pirate Day" is coming up in September. Could be a lot of fun this year. Arrrrrr, Matey!

There is a big article about how the slow economy is hitting hard the legal prostitutes in Germany. They are cutting rates, issuing specials, and offering coupons. Now THAT is stimulus to believe in!!!

"Bush-era torture?" Little charged wouldn't you say? While we're on the topic, how is water-boarding torture? It, like all other methods used, is purely psychological in nature - just like the methods used in police interogations are purely psychological (recall that the police can lie to suspects about some pretty heave stuff (e.g., status of suspect's parents or victims, etc.)). It never ceases to amaze me how much you lefties are willing to side with terrorists. It's almost as if you're rooting for them. Why do you hate the U.S. so much? Why don't you just leave and move to Iran, NK, or Ven? You would be happier there, and we real Americans would no doubt be happier with you there. These are questions that have yet to be answered.

Should I file my complaint against Latham in Kenya asserting theft of my career on the high seas?
