At the NALP Conference: Twisting in the Wind
Despite the depressed mood here at the NALP conference in Washington, some folks are still up for fun. We’re about to head off to karaoke night, sponsored by Major, Lindsey & Africa, which we’ve heard is not to be missed.
Last night, SJL Attorney Search hosted a swanky reception at the National Portrait Gallery. Attendees availed themselves of the open bar to dull the pain. At the emcee’s instigation, a dozen brave female volunteers took the stage to “do the twist”:
One spectator was unamused: “Fiddling while Rome burns.”
But hey, a little dancing can’t hurt. When the emcee exclaimed “Now turn it around! Turn it around!”, surely he was referring to the economy.
A few pictures — don’t get your hopes up, it’s not as extensive as this morning’s slideshow — after the jump.

Deeply, deeply troubling.
The National Portrait Gallery is a great event space. I was there a few years ago for a function.
Worst. Camera Work. Ever.
Lat, why no post about Covington's response to the Young suit?
http://legaltimes.typepad.com/files/young_eeoc.pdf
You devoted an entire post to Young's side of the story. Why hasn't there been any acknowledgment of Covington's response?
Once again, ATL has run with a negative story of questionable veracity about a firm without covering the other side.

What the heck was the point of this dizzying video???
5 - Presumably got lost in the shuffle, but too late to cover now. Literally last week's news:
http://legaltimes.typepad.com/blt/2009/03/young-hires-new-lawyer-in-suit-against-covington.html
And the BLT post did a nice job of covering it, so not clear what ATL could add.
This video was almost as entertaining as the UVA Libel Show video.
STFU, 5. No one cares, that's why there's been no more coverage.
5, let it go. Everybody knows that bottom-third at GULC is a ticket to low-status doc review. Young's pleadings, linked to in the ATL story, made it clear that she was not Covington material. Thus, it is not newsworthy that Covington is fighting her claims on the merits, nor will it be newsworthy when it wins in due course. The original story showed that this outcome was inevitable. Thus, further coverage would be redundant. Oh, and AA is not what kept you from succeeding in life.
Where were all the young men?
11 - I was not making a point about AA. As I stated in the last sentence of my first comment, I was making a point about the pattern of ATL's coverage.
Whenever there is bad news about a firm (Discrimination at Covington! Layoffs at Kirkland this Friday! etc.), ATL runs with the story regardless of its credibility. When contrary information emerges (Covington's response, no layoffs at Kirkland, etc.), ATL ignores this information.
Things are not as bleak as ATL is portraying them.

12-fail as impostor. Emaritus?
Did someone say party?
You put your fried frank in.
You put your fried frank out.
You put your fried frank in.
And you shake it all about.
13 - When there was good news to cover, ATL covered it with breathless excitement.
Starting salaries to $160K! Special bonuses! Clerkship bonuses to $50K! Parental leave to 18 weeks! Best firms to work at by Fortune! Working Mother! Human Rights Campaign!
Now there is bad news. And ATL is covering that.
Don't shoot the messenger. If you think the site's coverage is biased, don't read it.
whoo. the dance of the living dead
The video reminds me of the staff at our holiday parties.
I'm assuming these were the recruiters.
- as a minority attorney i wish young had a clue. anyone in their right mind would know that her personal story is not a good case for racial discrimination in law frm which is too bad because i do believe it exists - but here clearly this was a case of an entitled woman who thought despite her below average qualifications was entitled to better things. I know of far more academically qualified minority attorneys at other top schools - she cleatly has to move on. She made herself look foolish.
After seeing this video posted, perhaps these recruiters will think twice about judging prospective summer associate candidates based on their web presence.
how lame is this when we're watching a bunch of fatass useless headhunters partying down like a bunch of retards in a phonebooth
