I'm just a paralegal, but if you went to law school and relied on the promise that you were going to get a job that would pay off $340K in debt, isn't some legal doctrine available to address your grievances in court? I hear all of the attorneys in my personal injury law firm talk about section 90-something of a restater of law, whatever that is. It seems directly applicable to your situation.

That's why K&L laying off 20 staffers is above the fold and Kilpatrick laying off 24 associates is below the fold. It's all about the web hits/comments.

What I don't get is how firms with loads of idle associates continue to fire the mailroom staff (etc.) Cut a low 5-figure salary to make up for the nice 6-figure salaries? Like those underutilized attorneys are going to become profit centers any time soon? Staff may be costs, but it's not like they are working less hard. With all the cutbacks, their jobs are busier now.

Allen & Overy has completed a redundancy programme which has seen at least 247 partners and staff lose their jobs globally and cost the firm £44m.

The consultation process, which was launched in February with the firm citing global market conditions as the cause, was designed to cut nine per cent of partners, fee-earners and support staff.

All those affected will have left by tomorrow, 30 April 2009. The firm declined to comment on the total involved, but a spokesperson said that once additional voluntary redundancies are included, the total number of job cuts would be slightly higher than the total of 247 that was initially envisaged.

As well as cutting 47 partners, 100 fee-earners and 100 members of support staff, Allen & Overy de-equitised a further 35 partners. At the end of the last financial year the firm had a total of 2,686 fee-earners, 474 partners and 4,949 staff. Particularly badly hit was the firm’s former flagship leveraged finance practice (9 March)

The process was officially launched with a partner conference call with senior partner David Morley in which he outlined eight principles by which it would be conducted.

They were: that the process should be market-led, comprehensive, in line with the firm’s culture and ethos and its global strategic focus, that it should be fair, put the firm in the best possible shape to get through the recession, quick and allow for alternativesincluding voluntary redundancies, reduced hours, reduced pay, sabbaticals, secondments and deferrals of start dates for new trainees.

As part of the restructuring, the firm de-merged its private client practice, which will become an independent firm, Maurice, Turnor Gardner with effect from 1 May 2009

Here's the deal. My firm follows market. We were told that bonuses were small this year because they did not want to be a market leader and since market was small so were ours. Now we're worried that they will freeze associate salaries based on "market." No one's been laid off, we're busy as hell, everyone is meeting hours, etc. You know what? If you posted about things other than just lay offs and salary freezes, then we would not have to worry. Can you please stop with all this? They check you out and determine what market it. K&L Gates is a fine firm. The legacy PG&E partners (what's left) may be getting restless and tired of working, but the rest of the partnership is behind PJK all the way. Even in this economy, we are on pace to match last year's profit numbers. Sure we have made a few staff reductions, but we are not going to cut salaries or make any drastic move. We simply do not need to and we value our people too much.
