New York Law School: 2 Girls 1 Dress

New York Law School logo.JPGMost of the time, when law students flip out, they flip out about their law school. But in this era of law student meltdowns, it was only a matter of time before law students started brawling with each other.

On April 30, New York Law School (not to be confused with NYU School of Law) had a cocktail party for 3Ls to celebrate the end of classes. A tipster explains:

There was supposed to be hors d’oeuvres served with the free alcohol, but there was little food in sight, so the scene was set for overconsumption of alcohol on empty stomachs.

This sounds promising.

You might think that this story devolves into New York Law School students rioting in TriBeCa over the school’s inability to break out of the third tier. But instead, we’ve got a classic green-eyed monster lurking about:

Apparently, one 3L brought a 1L as his date, and this was upsetting to his ex-girlfriend, another 3L. Earlier in the night, the [female] 3L allegedly spilled wine on this 1L. The 1L later on then threw a wine glass at the 3L.

I think we all know where this is heading. Details after the jump.

catfight New York Law School NYLS small.jpgNot surprisingly, the jealous 3L did not take kindly to being assaulted by the 1L sideaction:

In retaliation, the 3L went after her and ripped the 1L’s dress off. So at one point the 1L was running around in only her shoes, stockings and thong, and security had to kick everyone out because of the fight.

We have to turn to an observer’s Facebook status updates (and attending comments) for more details (names have been changed as is my whim):

Rabble Rouser: Remind me not to wear a tube top/dress to any law school function
Interested Observer: lol, is that b/c of what you saw during the cat fight?
Didn’t Stay Late Enough: Sooooo wish I’d seen it.
Rabble Rouser: I actually didn’t see the boobs myself, but I believe the fight was over the 3L’s ex who had brought a 1L to the party. Sorry this is turning out to be TMZ… but at least it’ll keep us entertained through finals.
Interested Observer: lol, love to know who the “man” was!! bet you anything he wasn’t worth it, if he’s dated those two!
Who the Hell are You?: Yes, who is the guy? We’ve seen the 3L, we’ve seen the 1L, now let’s see the baby daddy!
Didn’t Stay Late Enough: There was a drink thrown?! This seriously gets better every time I hear about it. We may never get much use of the new building, but I’m guessing we’ll be the last class to get a cocktail party. Go NYULS!

Somewhere, the “baby daddy” is smoking a cigar, receiving the adulation of his boys, and feeling quite good about himself, I imagine.

Meanwhile, the rest of the NYLS community searches for answers. Another NYLS tipster had this to say:

NYLS has enough doubt cast upon its students and the intstitution itself, and i know i am not the only one wondering what the shcool plans to do about this humilitation on its community.

We reached out to NYLS Dean Richard A. Matasar, but his office declined to comment about the events.

We hope the defrocked NYLS 1L has learned a powerful lesson about straps.

I was thinking about that email that Kilpatrick Stockton sent to its employees about someone having been shot in their building. I was wondering whether any folks who are virulently anti-handgun in their political perspectives wished they had access to a gun or had a handgun with them at that moment.

I mean, if you think about it, when the rubber finally hits the road, and they're sitting at their desk with an email saying someone's been shot, don't leave the space, do you think everyone who things handguns should be banned were privately wishing they had one in their office, in case some crazed gunman showed up at their door?

I bet that deep down, in a part of them that they don't talk about at cocktail parties, they wished they had a gun to protect themselves...

This is even worse than the time Matasar paid off the professor/kiddie porn aficionado to get him to retire.
And, it's worse than the inherent conflict that Matasar has as chairman of the board at access group.

However, it is not worse than when NYLS faculty forbade the student body from hosting a blood drive on campusl; purportedly to uphold the "non-discrimination policy" even though they agreed to let the military back on campus (to ensure the faculty was still eligible for federal grants).

Awesome. I dated girls who attended New York Law School. They were completely psychotic, but this is probably typical of girls at that TTT.

Likewise, it probably wasn't much of a sight to see the 1L naked. If she was anything like the rest of the female student body and the girls I dated, she probably had a nasty hanging roast beefy vagina and little Jew tits.

63 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, May 5, 2009 5:00 PM

Elie:

This must be a theme at TTT lawschools. I heard this story from a friend of mine who went to John Marshal in Chicago:

In spring 2007, the school had a date auction at a Chicago bar to raise money for some local charity. Auctioned off were both male and female law students.

Some girl was being auctioned off and being bid on by both her boyfriend (a fellow 1L) and another testosterone driven male 1L. The boyfriend asked the competitor to stop bidding because the money was getting out-of-control; he refused and upped his bid dramatically. Nasty words flew and the boyfriend, allegedly in self-defense, threw a bar glass at the competitor male. It missed and shattered on another 1L's face, causing him cuts that had to be stitched together. The cops came and arrested the boyfriend.

I am not sure of how much of this story is completely true. If I remember, my friend told me the school newspaper actually did a story about this. I have no idea what happened to competitor male or boyfriend discipline wise. But, it was quite the talk of all the lower ranked law schools (DePaul, Kent, Loyola) in Chicago at the time.

NYC is a great city, but sorry guys, women is not one of those reasons. I've been living here for 5 years and go out constantly, and the girls here don't compare to those in southern california, texas, or florida.

I have it on good authority from a friend at NYLS that these two women are fairly attractive.

Commentators, "law school hot" is not applicable to NYLS, as it is assuredly not a law school, but merely an open enrollment, post-graduate institution that, in consideration for a significant financial commitments, will bestow a certification of "unemployability" upon its Willy Lowman graduates.

It wasn't nearly as cool as this fight sounds with a dress being ripped off and a 1L running around in a thong.

My brawl was definitely much lamer.

Charles Evans Hughes, Secretary of State/Chief Justice of the USSC
William Kunstler, civil right trial attorney/director of the ACLU.
President Woodrow Wilson, Con Law prof before becoming President of Princeton
Annette Gordon-Reed, renowned presidential scholar, expert in American legal history, and winner of the 2008 National Book Award in nonfiction and 2009 Pulitzer prize for history.

I am a NYLS grad, a recent bar passer, and an Associate in BigLaw. NYLS gets a bad rap, and sometimes it deserves it -- like in situations told by this story.

NYLS has a gorgeous new facility, a really nice bar pass rate, an amazing faculty line-up, and some pretty powerful alums in high places -- its true, believe it or not.

I think NYLS is going to show a big increase in rankings in due time -- but, I am the first to admit that it all starts with not letting immature people in who have no class and tear dresses off of other students (at a school event!).

I always wanted to be a lawyer. NYLS gave me that ability and gave me a really good network to latch onto. Yes, it is TTT -- but, really, if you must go to a TTT wouldnt you go to one in the best location of NYC with all of the above-listed pros?

The new building is a great start, but the real change will start in the admissions process. Good Luck, NYLS -- and dont let that 3L walk and take the bar, what an idiot!

avatar
159 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, May 6, 2009 10:49 AM

152 is right... I think people do not give NYLS students enough credit.

I summered with a few NYLS students at a top ten law firm in NYC last summer. They were all actually quite impressive and definitely at the top of the summer class.

I go to a top ten law school and I was embarrassed for the kids from the school who couldn't even make it to work on time, let alone say anything articulate in a meeting.

avatar
160 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, May 6, 2009 11:18 AM

158: You are absolutely right.

We should not forget that NYLS now has one of the largest endowments of any law school in the country.

I have never understood why someone wanting to practice in the Northeast would go to a so-called Top 50 or 75 school in the Midwest or South. Those graduates (if they are not in the top 10 or 15%) have a very difficult time competing with all the Fordham, NYLS, Brooklyn, Cardozo, Hofstra, etc. grads.

avatar
161 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, May 6, 2009 12:05 PM

I just do not understand why students who go to tiers above others have to be so unattractively obnoxious about the lower tiers. Does it really matter or impact your lives? We're old enough now to have gotten past such insipid competition contests. Pat yourselves on the back for being so mean...then get back to being an adult and try to get yourself a job in this economy.

We're all learning the same content and working the same hours. But, maybe those in the lowers are just a little hungrier or play harder. I think that only serves to benefit us...and it shows. Ask around.

It illustrates a lot about a person when he makes such ridiculous and bitter comments. Don't forget that law students are only admitted to the bar based on good character. I suggest the people above taking shots at NYLS, or any other school for that matter, start doing a little self-examination. And be careful...you do not know what content gets lifted from open websites and used against you later.

And to those of you doing their homework on NYLS, thank you for setting yourselves straight. Its actually quite impressive, is it not? No one should put down a school for advancing itself, and I think that the future has much to bring for NYLS and for its grads.

Thanks to 158 and 159 (and several others) for their posts in defense of the school. NYLS is a terrific institution and on the rise. NYLS has some of the most dedicated and incredible professors in the field, and it is upsetting that the actions of two individuals reflects so poorly on the work of our faculty and students. What happened at the cocktail party is an embarrassment, not only for the school but for our profession. One would only hope that NYLS will take steps towards correcting the situation and safeguarding the reputation of the school, the faculty, and the student body. Criminal acts of violence should not be tolerated on school property. Character and Fitness, much? Not to mention the fact that if it had been two guys throwing down at school, they would have already been expelled.

Also, ATL maybe you could monitor the slurs posted about Jews and Italians

NYLS = New York Law School
NYU = New York University

No one uses NYUSL, if you actually go there, its just NYU. The full name is New York University School of Law.

NYULS ≠ anything.

NYSL ≠ anything.

NYU = #5. NYLS = TTT.

Just to set the record straight.

P.S. - I once heard a story that someone really wanted to go to NYU, and they got all excited when they got a scholarship offer in the mail. They committed to going, packed their bags, and then realized in horror that they were actually at New York Law School, not NYU School of Law. But, I guess if you fail at reading that much, NYLS is where you deserve to be.

I urged my friend to upload the video but he is worried about repurcussions from the school administration. He told me he will probably delete it. Probably a smart move.
