Comfort Food for the Economy

Cupcake Stop lawyer NYLS grad.jpgWhen students at New York Law School can’t find work, sometimes they resort to tearing the clothes off of 1Ls. So we applaud Lev Ekster, an NYLS alumnus, for his non-violent approach to the economic crisis:

Recent law school grad Lev Ekster is going from court to cupcakes. When the New York Law School student realized he wouldn’t land a law firm job this year, he turned to entrepreneurship. Inspiration struck after a disappointing trip to Magnolia Bakery, where he waited in an excruciatingly long line for what he deemed a “dry and tasteless” cupcake. “The experience reminded me of my parents’ stories of waiting in line for bread,” says the native Ukrainian.

Yes, this story reminded us of breadlines too.

The mobile cupcake service is called Cupcake Stop, and it should be rumbling by a street corner near you. If you’re interested — not just in cupcakes, but possible employment — take note:

[A]ccording to their recent Twitter post, they’re hiring:

Now hiring, part-time and full-time employees in NYC. Food prep license is preferred, not required. Fun job! email jobs@cupcakestop.com

Why shouldn’t every NYLS student get in on the entrepreneurial act? We have additional details, after the jump.

Over at the Cupcake Stop website, we learn about the company’s business plan:

Our business concept is short and simple -
Serve New Yorkers delicious cupcakes on THEIR terms.

We know how stressful and fast-paced this city can be, so we park our truck in easily accessible locations and always have fresh cupcakes waiting!

But not everybody who graduates from New York Law School without a job can just start their own mobile business. You need sound financial planning — and a little help from your parents:

After tasting recipes from countless bakers, he found the flavor he craved in former Bouley pastry chef Manal Mady’s creations. The truck will hit various Manhattan neighborhoods from 10 a.m. until 4 a.m. Mr. Ekster used his savings and a loan from his parents for the $25,000 startup costs. So will this be the beginning of the cupcake wars? “With the convenience and quality we’re going to have, I don’t see it being much of a war,” says the confident 25-year-old.

So to be clear: it’s not a war, it’s not a Ukrainian breadline, it’s certainly not a legal job. But as long as everybody keeps their clothes on in the back of the truck, it is certainly a positive development for the reputation of NYLS 3Ls.

This summer I will be hosting several private reunions at my residences in NYC and Florida. I thought about offering catering positions to summer associates/associates but those miserable cretins are mostly clumsy and show poor social form. Too bad as it could have provided a splendid opportunity to supplement their wages.

Cupcakes on Salusa Secundus tend to be very dry and hot and contain the thumbs of former convicts who were unfortunate enough to be subject to a high mortality rate.

If he didn't think of this, that would make this the best LAW STUDENT FAIL story of all time.

there really isn't any difference between NYLS and NYU -- everyone is being taught the same cases; some professors are good, others aren't; students join various journals or other associations and compete with each other to get the best grades and try and land good jobs. They should just merge already.

"A retired federal judge renowned for his kindness, hard work and fairness in the courtroom died yesterday after a long illness. David Winder, a former chief judge of the U.S. District Court in Utah, was 76 years old.

"A graduate of Stanford Law School, Winder was appointed to the federal bench in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter, after a two-year stint in state court."

One has to appreciate the full context of these comments -- coming from people who, I bet, either are collecting unemployment or have lost every last ounce of entrepreneurialism at BigLaw, if they ever had any. Just STFU and go back to filing your weekly unemployment claims; and, if you're "lucky" enough to still have your jobs, go back to your desks and await the orders from the assholes you look up to.

Finally, @26, go back and take a look at NYLS's bar passage rate. I bet Quinn Emanual and other BigLaw firms would be better off hiring top people from schools like NYLS, instead of ideoligic and socially awkward idiots from, ohh... say Yale

I bet, in 5 years this dude will have more money in his bank account, and be happier, than all of the foregoing commentators put together.

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

Because no one can post in the QE 1st year thread, and I must be heard, I will say it here!

To state the obvious, you need to pass the bar exam to be a lawyer at a law firm. It's not important at all once you've passed, but it's everything until you have.

I think Yale has a unique problem imposing this notion on some persistent segment of its grads. The naturally brilliant are drawn to Yale, and the institution probably indulges their every passing thought, as if they were all worthy of deep consideration. This atmosphere, plus the grading system and the sentiment that merely matriculating at Yale Law makes you a high priest (or priestess) of law probably likely makes it hard for some to focus on something as pedestrian as the bar exam.

The bar exam is a bridge that has to be crossed, and if it is not, your legal career will never start. Let this be a lesson to everyone in law school that studying for the bar exam is not optional -- it's not a logic exam or an IQ test, it's about substantive knowledge that, for the most part, can only be memorized.

I just graduated from NYLS and in the fall I will be working in the one of DA's offices in the CIty. Every school in the city had students applying for these jobs but when it comes down to it, it looks NYLS placed more students than NYU. What a shame.

And for all the pompus ass ***** who think that every school in NY is better than NYLS think about this. I don't see an huge disparity in the percentage of students your placing in Big law firms, so before all the trash is spoken I would check my facts.

You can say all you want that NYLS may not have class but after reading some of the posts I don't see the other NY law schools putting out anyone better.
