Sidley Associate Writes Tell-All About Legal Life in the Forbidden City
If you like the fast life, look out for opportunities in your firm’s offices abroad. Judging from the Russian tales of Deidre Dare and the new memoir, China High, by the pseudonymous “ZZ,” life in Biglaw’s foreign offices is full of drugs, sex, and nonstop clubbing.
Of course, these two are no longer with their firms, Dare fired from Allen & Overy and ZZ no longer on the payroll at Sidley Austin. Which leads us to suggest that you not serialize your wild adventures — Dare’s downfall — or get caught running food delivery business or smoking opium-laced hashish in public — ZZ’s sins.
Now ZZ is pursuing a new career: writing. He has spun his adventures and misadventures into a memoir, called China High. From Bloomberg:
The seat of China’s age-old civilization is as seamy on the inside as it looks imposing from the outside, judging from “China High,” a memoir scribbled under the nom de plume ZZ by a Shanghai-born, U.S.-trained lawyer in his 20s.Written before the global credit meltdown, “China High” lifts a curtain on a side of Beijing seldom seen by tourists. ZZ captures the nocturnal buzz of a city where rave parties in derelict factories are a staple and orgies have become a rite of passage. Then there’s the pot, which locals call the Big Numb….
A Chinese national, ZZ graduated from Brandeis University and Boston College Law School, says his publisher, St. Martin’s Press. Then he went to Hong Kong in late 2000 to work for Sidley Austin Brown & Wood LLP (now Sidley Austin LLP) and transferred to its Beijing office in late 2001.
That bio is detailed enough that we don’t imagine ZZ is going to stay anonymous for long.
Those who have been to Beijing know that it is super cheap. Anyone living there with a $250,000 salary gets to live like a king. A sex-having, drug-doing, dumpling-eating king. More on ZZ’s indulgences and “flings with models, Mrs. Robinsons, kept women and what he delicately terms ‘local girls with jungle fever’,” after the jump.
According to the Far Eastern Review, Sidley fired ZZ for running a food delivery business on the side. That doesn’t make complete sense to us, but we haven’t read the book. According to the Review, ZZ went on to act as a free-lance lawyer, and continued to find trouble:
[The] licensed lawyer [is] willing to write candidly (albeit anonymously) about purchasing hookers and dope, interrogations with Chinese police, illegal motorcycle importation, his contempt for the common man, faking an entire legal office, starring in a TV racing documentary, and his washboard abs. That he comes off, in the end, as reasonably likeable is perhaps the greatest miracle of all—unless, again, you’re counting the fact that the book is good.
The reviews do indicate that the book is good. We read a few pages thanks to Amazon and found them a bit dry. He uses the expression, “for Mao’s sake,” which struck us as not funny enough to justify its clunkiness.
But the rapidly transforming China is like the Wild West for adventurous entrepreneurs. And sprinkled in among tales of the sex and drugs are worthwhile insights into the workings of modern China, says Bloomberg:
ZZ offers tips on how to navigate Beijing, right down to what the worst swear words mean and how to use them to best effect. He exposes the hidden high costs of doing business in labor-rich China by describing his struggle to start a food- delivery company staffed by locals with little English and no inkling of quality service. He also challenges the assertion that the key to getting anything done in China is “guanxi,” or connections. In prison, guanxi got him little more than a few extra dumplings, he says.
What does work wonders is being a foreigner, he says, rightly observing how the Chinese, long cut off from the world, now revere all things from abroad. An expatriate, he says, draws praise, envy and opportunity just for being different.
Is it just us, or does that last sentence sound like a line from a fortune cookie?
Assuming it does, we’ll do what we would do at a Chinese restaurant. ‘An expat draws praise, envy and opportunity just for being different… in bed.’ Yup, it works.

100 bucks ZZ is really a New England Law School dropout who watched 'Big Trouble in Little China' starring the amazing Kurt Russel whilst on Hash before writing this gem.
I always thought you could get the death penalty for smoking the 'evil weed' in China? In any case, in my day, we just did loads of cocaine since it doesn't smell. And of course we had dozens of exotic women to choose from.
The 80's truly was the golden age of biglaw.
not foist
When I was in Peking for document review, I found this great restaurant, where I pounded my secretary in the ass all over the moo goo gai pan.
How has he not been disbarred?
I feel like a lot of people are on vacation and it's me and 3 other guys posting comments. I'm bored by this.
I should write a book called 'Why Terminator Salvation is not a good movie"
"Chung is king!" Google it.
excellent post - thank you
How is this guy not disbarred yet?
How long before this guy is outed?
qft.
I'm guessing he wrote the book after the professional value of his JD was equivalent to toilet paper.
Does Pierce & Pierce have a Bejing office? I understand there may be enough hardbodies and coke to keep my interest between "dates".

Funny, I thought the Asia lawyer recruiting guys normally posted on the side column of this blog...
cool
this book sounds lame. i work in asia and even i don't want to read this book. the guy sounds like a poser and the book sounds cliched. also, the money he got is not that much because china taxes like crazy. finally, beijing sucks - the club scene is sort of what you expect of a country that just emerged from a communist economic system. think post soviet eastern europe or russia except you don't have anna kournikova looking chicks soliciting sex but rather 40 or 50 year old ladies trying to get you to the karaoke joint where there are a bunch of girls from the countryside rounded up. i'd rather work in hong kong, tokyo, singapore or shanghai before taking a beijing assignment.
"ZZ offers tips on how to navigate Beijing, right down to what the worst swear words mean and how to use them to best effect."
THIS BOOK SOUNDS HARDCORE. PLEASE MODERATE.
Sigh. Everybody thinks they're Tucker Max nowadays.
Agree with 7, first thought I had is the Peter Chung/Carlyle story from back in 2001, although that was Korea, not China.
CHUNG is KING
His name is Zhao Zhan and he is a total douchebag. Sidley fired him because he was a shitty lawyer. So did Paul Weiss Beijing. Getting fired TWICE in Beijing is no small feat given how desperate firms have been to hire Mandarin speaking lawyers the last few years.
To backup #19, there was a Zhao Zhan who graduated from Brandeis in 1996. The timing seems to match up to this being the douchebag.

Asian Guys With Asian Girls?
I do believe we have a winner in 19. According to Zhao Zhan's cached bio at Skadden, he graduated from Brandeis in 1996 and Boston College of Law in 1999. The bio was cached on May 19, 2006, but he no longer appears to be on their website. Sounds like ATL should try to get an interview and perhaps find out what happened to him. Also, his name appears on a June 05, 2002 press release from Sidley Austin which states that lawyers from the Beijing office were used on the deal.
19 is correct in all respects; I knew ZZ in Beijing and he was a bit of a DB.

Can confirm it was Zhan. Went out a few times when I was on a doc review out there. Did go to a rave and we ended up with a few girls. He has a mighty small pecker, but is otherwise a nice guy.

To back up everyone else, I was in an orgy with a guy named Zhao Zhan who worked at Sidley and graduated from Brandeis. He was a douchebag in the bed.
OMG THERE'S POT IN CHINA OMG CRAZZZZZZY MAN
22 is suggesting an unnatural and disturbing sex act. Please moderate.
I thought Asian guys had huge wangs? Please advise.

Pizza Delivery In China
When lawyer Zhan Zhao moved to Beijing in 2002, after spending his teenage years and getting his education in the U.S., he was shocked to find no food-delivery service was available.
"I was a lawyer working long hours and new to China, so a service of convenience was something that I really needed to help adjust to the other realities of modern-day China," said Mr. Zhao, 32 years old, an associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. To fill the gap, he started a delivery service, Beijing Goodies, to deliver food, at an additional price, from Beijing restaurants. After a rocky start in May 2002, the business has taken off in recent years. Today, the company has 7,000 registered users in Beijing -- and Mr. Zhao, who now lives in Shanghai, sees food delivery as a growth market.
"Food delivery will only become more and more popular, especially for the local white collars, as the Chinese consuming public continues to work longer and longer hours," Mr. Zhao said.
I used to work with ZZ at one of his former firms (don't want to out myself since I am still at the firm). He's been in Beijing as well as HK offices of some of these firms.
The guy clearly didn't care about being a lawyer, but he was definitely funnier and more interesting to be around than the average lawyer. I don't see why people are bad mouthing him in the comments. Sounds like he's been successful in selling his story (whether exaggerated or not) to a huge publisher and is now getting a lot of press. Good for him.
19, you make it seem like being a shitty lawyer who care more about pizza delivery businesses and going to raves on the side is a bad thing. You're probably not that fun to be around.
WTF, this post could have been all about sex with Asian girls and you guys completely dropped the ball. Some loser trying to be a badass and fucking up is nowhere near as interesting.
Good for ZZ. His life is a heluva lot more interesting than ours (except for that Dare girl from A&O). Whether or not you agree with his lifestyle, you gotta admire his entrepeneurship.
I know ZZ as a friend and from working with him at Paul Weiss in Beijing. Really great guy; not only interesting and fun, but also quite caring and down-to-earth. I have not yet read the book, but I doubt it merits the AbovetheLaw author's characterization of ZZ as a failure of any kind. ZZ has consistently pursued his interests successfully, led a personally fulfilling life, and frequently contributed to others' happiness as well.
Additionally, this article is fraught with inaccuracies, right down to his name! "ZZ" is not a pseudonym at all. It is just short for his real name, Zhao Zhan ("Zhao" being his surname.)
Following on my last comment (at 36), I will respond to 19 and the other DB comments by saying that ZZ can come across quite harsh most of the time, and I held the same opinion of him (with the addition of "arrogant" to the list) for the first few months I knew him. However, despite that we were not close at all, when I received some very bad personal news one day, and when I found myself in some trouble on an unrelated occasion not long thereafter, he stepped up and "was there" to listen and to help. Never expected it from an arrogant DB, but at those times I learned what I now consider to be his "true nature."
I am not in a position to comment on the quality of his work as a lawyer, other than to say that leaving (whether fired or otherwise) three separate law firms in less than half a decade must indicate something about his work, his personality, our profession, or all of the above.
What the hell is wrong with this ZZ guy that he has to pay for Ass in BJ?
As an expat Chinese person in BJ, he should be getting ass left and right. Last time I was in China, I fucked 5 girls in 4 nights and never paid for a single one.
You should be able to pick up girls easily at clubs.
Even if you go to the KTV places with the paid escorts, a good looking Asian guy should be able to take them home without paying. All you have to do is lie to the locals about how cheating is wrong and that you're a nice guy since they're used to assholes all the time.
whatever
haven't you people seen kungfu hustle?
beijing is just like that
with a bunch of sharp dressed gansta's with guns
who break out into dance...
I guess it's not different than in NYC...around Canal street...
Agree with 32, I know the guy and he doesn't seem to care about being a lawyer beyond the cashflow, but he must have enough skills to end up with Skadden. He's clearly the type that makes unconventional decisions in the pursuit of an interesting life. It's also because of this that makes him hard to relate to on a personal level and can make him come off as an arrogant guy.
32 and 40 hit it on the nose. it's because he does things so differently from the rest of us in the legal field that many fail to connect and rush to judge him as a DB. but once you get to know him, you realize he's a genuine guy who cares about the individuals around him. as for the firms he worked for, he knew they were using him, so he simply used them back.
now regarding his legal skills, i've had a chance to supervise his work. when he does choose to apply himself, there were definitely flashes of brilliance. although sometimes it was difficult to get him to apply himself ...
Wow...Hi ZZ!
All the positive comments rush in at Beijing local time...
WOW...It is the first time hearing such comments on ZZ, who is currently an associate at Skadden Shanghai Office, and knowing his adventures. Never knew that he would that versatile. Good for him, in case that he enrolled in Skadden's sidebar, he would have other incomes during the recession.
An American going to China to hook up with chicks? Sounds dangerous - hasn't anyone seen Red Corner?
19, you sound sooooooooo jealous and awful it's not funny. if you hate your life so much, maybe YOU ought to go find one like ZZs, which sounds dangerous (with AIDS out there, don't think orgies are a good idea these days), but fun; who wouldn't want to work whenever they want to, have tons of money rolling in, party all the time, and be able to do all the drugs they want (except heroin of course, which is just plain nasty)? You sound like a pathetic bore..............
I gave this book a bad review on Amazon. If you want real entertainment, I suggest the complete three season library of “Hardcastle and McCormick” on DVD.
It does not surprise me in the least that this guy would be a douche. ANyone who boasts about their sexual conquests is a douche. And Chinese chicks (unlike other ASian chicks) are notoriously kinda fugly. Not sure what models he was talking about but there ain't too many in China....
Zhao Zhiyi is one Chinese chick I would love to bang.
Those who say Asian chicks aren't hot are not real hot blooded American men.
You're a little light in the loafers, aren't you, 47?
Wow, 48, you need to work on your reading comp. I said Chinese chicks are kinda fugly compared to other Asain chicks. Get yo head outta yo ass foo!
- 47
48, don't you mean Zhang Ziyi?
-WGuWAG
47 probably never been near an attractive Asian female. China has the largest number of internationally successful models. Check out fashion weeks in Paris or NYC, the Asian models are more than 50% Chinese.
Because China is so big, you can have your pick of petite quiet girls from the South, or tall curvy loud girls from the North. And Chinese girls don't have as much plastic surgeries...
51 - you are obviously a Chinese chick.
- 47
51 is right. 4 feet 11 inch southern Chinese chicks and 6 feet 2 inch plump northern chicks blabbing about overcooked dumplings are all the rage now in the fashion world.
Tucker Max is a lawyer now?
Just finished the book. First half is crap, second half (when he goes to jail) is redeeming.
There is enough nuanced detail to make one believe that most of the stories he tells are truthful, even if the chronology is a bit too neat.
