Breaking: New Hampshire Will Have Gay Marriage
The AP is reporting that the New Hampshire state legislature has passed a gay marriage law that the governor will likely sign:
Gov. John Lynch is expected to sign [the proposed legislation] into law later Wednesday. It would make New Hampshire the sixth state to allow gays to marry. The bill would expand religious protections that Lynch says are needed to win his signature.Lynch said he would veto gay marriage if the law didn’t clearly spell out that churches and religious groups would not be forced to officiate or provide other services.
So, soon you can add New Hampshire to the list of states that allow gay marriage. The current members are: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, Vermont and Iowa.
Is there a warm weather state willing to take the plunge? C’mon Florida. C’mon moderate Governor Charlie Crist. You know you want to.
Update: Okay, so Florida has a constitutional amendment explicitly prohibiting gay marriage. Can anyone nominate a different warm weather state? Somehow I don’t think Mississippi will be leading the charge here.

Hey Elie, the FLORIDA CONSTITUTION HAS BEEN AMENDED to outlaw same-sex marriage. Why don't you do a nominal amount of research before suggesting that Gov. Crist unilaterally enact same-sex marriage in your hackish posts.
wow - social conservatives are really sucking at the whole 'impeding equality' thing. perhaps they should focus their energy on ensuring that history books published twenty years hence will portray them are mere imbeciles as opposed to full-fledged bigots.
Gov. Crist [note the spelling Elie] would never sign such a bill in Fla. because it will draw attention to his own dubious sexuality (which is a nice way of saying that he will be outed as being infected with "the Gay")
And then there were 44.
now every Vito & Johnnycakes wannabe couple can live freely in the fresh mountain air of new hampshire eating all the gay pancakes they want. god bless gaymerica.
Between this article, the UVA articles, and the lack of any post on the Black Panthers / DOJ Voter Suppression fiasco, Elie's liberal bias is getting pretty flagrant.
We get it - you're interested in the gay rights / gay marriage movement. That doesn't mean we need a post (or worse, multiple posts) every time some decision is made about it. This is supposed to be a site about the legal industry and legal education, not gay marriage. There are plenty of other sites for people to go to read / discuss it.
*C'mon Florida. C'mon moderate Governor Charlie Crist. You know you want to.*
Ellie, are you coming on to Governor Crist? I knew your marriage was a sham.
Get real, Ellie. No way Florida is going to allow gay marriage, and will probably succeed (sp? sorry) from the union if the Supreme Court approves it.
Poor Charlie Crist finally had to get married when he was supposed to have been considered for Vice President. We have had to endure many elections with various fiancees, but this time the poor guy had to do it.
But she is a peach. An auditor in NYC, then worked for a halloween costume company and now the distinguished first lady of our wonderful state. Look, we will outlaw cars on cinderblocks in the front yard (our state symbol) before recognizing gay marriage.
"Breaking news on law firms and the legal profession?"
live free or die you IDIOTS
I don't think Mississippi will be leading the charge either as it also has a constitutional amendment prohibiting gay marriage .. nice try though.
Nice to see it done by democratic means instead of having unelected judges impose their morality.
8 = moron. The DOJ already obtained an injunction against the guy engaged in the actual voter intimidation. There's no fiasco; there's no controversy. This is all conservatives have going for them right now. If they repeat Black Panthers, Wise Latina, ACORN and whatever else a million times, maybe someone will actually think they're not entire irrelevant to the political conversation.
live free or die you IDIOTS
15: The injunction is that the guy can't step near a voting booth with a weapon for 100 days. That's about as light of a slap on the wrist as you can receive for a federal crime caught on tape that the defendants didn't even bother to defend themselves in court against, and was about to go to default judgment against them before Holder and company suddenly decided to override the career attorneys' recommendations and inexplicably drop all charges. That makes so much sense and is a total non-issue, right?
South Carolina? It's chock full of closeted gays.
conservatives = fail. miserably.
anytime positive news for liberals happens on this site its breaking and important. even if it was a gay being tackled 2 years ago. weak.
Gays = overrated
20 = perfect example of conservative idiocy. first, this isn't positive news for "liberals." it's positive news for everyone who's not a bigot. it's also related to the hottest current legal/policy issue.
second, elie's post about w&l was NOT about the gay being tackled two years ago; it was about the recent email from the dean re: some verbal misconduct about gays or whatnot on top of that incident as well as others in virginia. 20 = typical conservative in the media...good with words, but bad on facts and reality.
New Mexico? It's pretty warm there.
i can haz butt secks nao?
Nevada is a warm weather state, or I guess more like living in Hades during the summer. A domestic partner bill was just passed, overriding the Governor's veto. It permits domestic partnerships between any two individuals regardless of gender.

I agree with all that say this blog has lost its focus recently with gay/race/etc. posts.
-a liberal who reads ATL for legal news.
I typically refrain from commenting on stories involving homosexuality but I will take this opportunity to give some advice to the morally decayed folks who prefer to fornicate with the same sex while selecting the legal profession as a career choice. Yesterday I read a post on ATL that accurately stated that "big law" or life at a peer firm, is a a lifestyle. It is not a job or a career. Homosexuality and the legal profession do not mix, at least not at a peer firm. Back in 1977, a senior partner at the firm went to the Hangar in the West Village to get a dime for the public phone to place a call. Much to his surprise, he saw an associate at the firm osculating with another man. Within a week, that associate was terminated. I don't make the rules. In this profession, you better be and stay in the closet if you want to remain employed at a peer firm. Assuming gay marriage is allowed in NY, it still won't give you the freedom to wear pinky rings and pink ties to the office with the expectation that you will remain employed. Do what you must in private quarters but once you display your flaming flamboyance in public and you are caught, kiss the peer firm life goodbye.
You must not have been to New York recently, PE, because out gay partners have ascended to the top of such firms as S&C, Cravath, Davis Polk, Cleary, etc. In fact, you pretty much have to be gay to make partner these days -- less familial obligations, prestige obsessed, dressed to the nines in Harvard and Yale JDs, anal retentive, hard workers. All the qualities needed to be a success in big law.
Word.

as for warm weather states--how about California getting its act together?
Mississippi can't enact gay marriage -- too many blacks.
This comment is addressed to post no. 29.
One word: Tokens
Does Charlie Crist's wife live in Florida? I understand that he does. I don't think she does.
In any event, I feel bad that he had to "man up" for a potential VP slot. I guess he would have had to do it anyway for his run for senate.
However, thanks to his new wife he will probably have the best costume in the West Village Halloween Parade. But there is no way we are getting gay marriage in Florida.
Not a state, but they're welcome to go to Cuba.
It's just a short swim from Key West (though the STD slick might be an environmental hazard) and the partyboys can get all pokey poking they want by all the European tourists there.
Great windfall for the New Hampshire maple syrup industry tho. Jelly or syr'p? They prefer syr'p.
PE: I thought I told you to shut up.
You tried to do schtick on a suicide. No one cares what you have to say. We're not laughing with or at you.
Just disappear.
Speaking of bigots, howzabout that Sonia Sotomayor ....
Another refuge for Elie when he finally comes out of the closet.
Yay! But my great state of Massachusetts was the one that led the way!!
AMAZING NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Elie!
The fact that firms and schools actively RECRUIT fags and dykes is one of the worst aspects of the legal profession today. Do what you want in your own time, but seriously? Y'all freaks.
So I guess NY is next, then who knows...maybe Washington?
37,
I ampretty sure Elie has already come out
The true bigots are those of you who do not support my right as a bisexual to marry one man and one woman.
42...
You're a phony!!
Bisexuals just like to fuck; they can care less about marriage!!
ever notice its the lily white states that approve gay marriage? minorities are too smart for that b.s.
PE has been outed before to really be a 1L...just bitter (and if not old, ignorant). Probably a closet case himself. Gays won't claim him or will the straights.
PE's #28 comment is crazy! Gays are at the top tiers of NYC, LA and DC firms. Obviously you're not a Biglaw guy....probably could get into the club. Sorry for your bad luck PE
Great post Elie. Equal rights for all - whether straight, bi or gay.
Update: I am a moron and refuse to do even a basic Google search about Florida's gay marriage laws before "publishing" a blog. I fail as an attorney and journalist. Anyone have other suggestions?
NM and NC are the only warm states without constitutional amendments, though HI's amendment only gives the legislature the authority to limit to man-woman.
more likely is that CA changes back in 2010
According to a model the folks at FiveThirtyEight did regarding the issue, the warm weather states most likely to be accepting of legalized gay marriage are Nevada and Hawaii. Of the states without any sort of pre-existing gay marriage ban, New Mexico is the most likely to legalize gay marriage the earliest, with the model predicting they will legalize gay marriage by 2014.
PE is a bad ass
Marriage Equality for ALL!!!!
I can feel the bigotry, hate, and conservatism slowly melting away--and it feels so good
Why do liberals like to pretend that over 50% of Americans are bigots? Maybe they just vote according to their moral values. The fact that you obviously disagree with those values does not make most Americans hatefilled bigots.
48 - how is CA going to change back in 2010? CA is being overrun with illegal immigrants who just happen to be 99% Mexican and therefore 99% Catholic and most presumably will be against gay marriage (note: is gay marriage legal in any hispanic country? Nope.) Once the Great Barry Hussein Obama grants them amnesty and allows them to vote do you really think they will support gay marriage?
And as a precursor I could give a crap one way or the other about gay marriage. It doesn't affect me in the least. I'm just stating the obvious - that Barry's policies will sometimes conflict, and it is clear based on his past actions that granting amnesty is higher on the totem pole than trying to get a federal amendment to allow gay marriage (or strong arm states into granting the same).

Um, how about Spain? Is that hispanic enough for you? Gay marriage has been legal there for four years now. Seriously, before you bloviate out of your a s at least try and get your facts straight.
This is fantastic news. More marriages = more divorces = more work for lawyers.
I don't see California voters reversing Prop 8 in 2010 or any time that soon, though I think it will happen eventually, perhaps in 10-15 years. Prop 8 did pass pretty handily.
