Morning Docket: 06.26.09
* Many people are still reeling from the news of the death of Michael Jackson. [Rolling Stone]
* The scandal at the University of Illinois law school is bad, it’s really, really bad, you know it. Reports are now surfacing that the school admitted politically connected applicants in exchange for jobs for the law school’s graduates. [Chicago Tribune]
* Mark Sanford did use state funds to see his pretty young thing in Argentina. But he’s going to pay it back. Now he just needs some tender lovin’ care. [New York Times]
* Allen Stanford pleaded “not guilty” yesterday. Allen are you okay? Are you okay, Allen? You’ve been hit by, you’ve been struck by, a smooth criminal? [WSJ Law Blog]
* China disbars human rights lawyers. No message could have been any clearer. [ABA Journal]
* FDA, really bang up job on the Zicam thing. The way you make me feel … is unhealthy. [Bloomberg]

FIRST.....MYSTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTAL
Well done. Someone going to make a Free Willy joke or what?
Has anyone checked out this "Maria". If you read the emails released by The State Paper, she was off on a trip "with a friend" just days after her torrid affair with the Govenor in June 2008 and she was spending her time emailing the Gov. How did they meet originally? Any chance she was setting him up as a "mark"?
Love the MJ references, EM!
I like it. Good work.
Judge Kent resigns.
Illinois proving once again it is a world of who you know, not what you know. Oh, and it is a corrupt state.
PYT!!
7, it's a good thing our national government isn't filled with people from that state.
+1 to Elie
Good quotes. I didnt' notice at first, but then when I got to "pretty young thing" I realized. Very clever.
Michael Jackson was with little boys, presumably with no lube. He was a monster who got what he deserved, but not soon enough
Very nice, Elie.
Sanford/ Ensign,
change we can believe in. Yeah baby. Oh wait a minute.....
elie this is pretty good. the lyrics are indistinguishable from your normal prose style, though.
Elie, one of the best posts you've made since I started reading this blog.
Mystal loves fishsticks in between his moobs.
Nice Elie!
Elie, you still fail at life.
apparently there is an internet rumor going around that michael jackson has died. can anyone confirm? link?
Child molester, didn't read.
P.S. Do you remember the time?
I lol'd
Well done.
Mystal wants some jebus juice all over his moobs.
Univ. of Illinois College of Law rejected my application because I didn't have any political connections. I had to settle for Kent and its overrated legal writing program.
Elie, is it racist to call him out for being a child molester?
(Notice what I did there with the well-placed comma? Try it sometime.)
12 = Prince
Anyone else think eventually we are going to have a catastrophic conflict with China?
I don't just mean lawyers, obviously, but rather the United States and other democratic nations.
It is quite possible (and probable) that the "interns" are now ghost-writing for Elie.
The Illinois corruption deserves a full post, MysTTTal.
U of Illinois is not corrupt. What happened was just acceptable quid pro quo (as long as the students weren't black).
If you are famous and have a career ending scandel emerging, today is the day to air out your dirty laundry. With Jackson's, Faucet's and McMann's death (and Kronkite's death looming), everyone will start losing focus on the major scandels. Most people already forgot about the SC governer love tryst.
Shouldn't the U of I thing have a full post instead of being mixed in with Michael Jackson stuff? Now it not only affects admissions standards, but the deal for jobs for graduating students/gaming the employment stats/wasting public funds.
I wish WashU would do more legacy admits.
If letting in one idiot gets five students a job, what is the big deal?
Isn't it clear that the Dean of the law school was just messing around: ""Only very high-paying jobs in law firms that are absolutely indifferent to whether the five have passed their law school classes or the Bar." Come on. Clearly she was taking this guy for a ride.
How is the U of I stuff newsworthy? It's an institutionalized practice. Happens every day in the private employment sector and college admissions. Yet the pussies on this site only have the cajones to fight the power that is affirmative action.
I think the Dean of U of I should be commended. Most law schools don't give a flying fuck about the job prospects of their graduates. So long as the top 10% get the 6-figure jobs (making the "average salary" of recent grads look respectable) and the likes of Starbucks keep hiring recent law grads (giving law schools a 98% employed at graduation rate), law schools don't have to care about the bottom half of the graduating class.
This Dean is helping 5 bottom 50% graduates get six-figure jobs! That's more entry-level jobs provided with the help of one law school in one year more than all the "job help" provided by the likes of the "Career Services" of Brooklyn, Dozo, and NYLS in all their years COMBINED!
Politically connected preference? Where is the out cry from the peanut gallery about favoritism the we usually hear on ATL? I really expected more than the handful of comments that are here at this moment.
37/39, everyone agrees that this is a bad thing. That's why it's considered a scandal. If you know that this is happening at other schools, feel free to bring it forward. Not like affirmative action, where some people actually try to defend institutional racism. I really hope you're not a real lawyer with your pitiful analogies.
This was amusing. Nice work.
U of I is RANCID
40, you leave us with the impression that being a "real lawyer" actually requires intelligence and concrete analogies. Jesus christ, you've got to be a law student who's never been exposed to "real lawyers."
Not sure how you can tell that "everyone" agrees this is a bad thing. But that's typical of your kind (play lawyer or white man, pick your poison)-you must always take them at their word. It's that whole divine omniscience thing.
If there's a story on ATL that remotely involves a racial minority, all the affirmative action abolitionists are out in full force, and the ones who know better are complicit in their silence. Give me a fucking break "everyone agrees this is a bad thing!" I've got the LOLs.
This is a "scandal" because Blago is involved, not because connected people were given a leg-up. You cannot be that dense.
Never put anything incriminating in writing!
43, every time there is an AA post, there are plenty of AA opponents and defenders. That's why there are lots of posts back and forth. Who is defending this scandal? Nobody...does that make clear to you the meaning of "everyone"? Perhaps it is uncontroversial that quid pro quo bribery is bad regardless of who is involved? If it weren't Blago but Pat Quinn or Roland Burris instead, then there would be no scandal at U of I? You cannot be that dense. Oh wait, you are.
Btw, I'm not white, but it's nice to get a glimpse into your racist world where one can assume people's race based solely on their opinions. Hint: not all black people think alike.
Do you know which law firm this reminds me of? Hint, they laid off everyone who failed the bar except for a partner's son.
The US is not a meritocracy people, so please, pick up the pitchfork and get to work.
45,
I think 43 said "play-lawyer OR white man." you should also stop while you are ahead as your attempt to school your fellow black @ 43 is illogical and it makes my barely developed brain hurt.
The fact that "nobody is defending the scandal" is not the equivalent of "everyone agrees this is a bad thing." Please digest that before you post again, as I will then be forced to use you to illustrate all of my points with re: affirmative action. Regards.
47, stop astroturfing yourself at 43. You assumed I was white ("your kind") and brought up that fact to try to prove I'm just a white racist for opposing AA. Your conjunction semantics argument is pathetic. I know your kind (total retard or epic douche, pick your poison). Oh wait, by your argument I could never have assumed you're an epic douche or total retard.
If you're not 43, it's nice that you automatically assume 43 is black. Hilarious, which just goes to prove my point.
um yeah because I am sitting here right next to the kid and he's black alright!
Hurd replied: "Only very high-paying jobs in law firms that are absolutely indifferent to whether the five have passed their law school classes or the Bar."
I like your style, but why not just take cash straight up?

agree with 38. at least their dean is hustling to get something good for their grads. howie, take notes.

This is not about Blago.
The DEAN of the law school traded admission for rigging the stats on employment at graduation -
it's no joke!
Demanding high paying jobs for 5 bottom dwelling students,
falsifies one of the major, if not the Most major qualifier for the ranking of a law school -
numbers of students employed at graduation.
So they have written proof they are rigging their numbers. There is at a case that their accredidation should be pulled!
That's The HUGE issue here, folks
57 - If you read the other parts of the email exchange, namely the transparent ranking boosting conspiracy, that's not at all surprising. Dean Hurd takes tremendous credit on her bio for elevating Illinois to "A Top 15" school, whatever that is.
MysTTTal needs to get off his fat rear and give this the full post it deserves.
12,
Those allegations were never even proven. One settled (most people settle in lawsuits anyway, since there never really is a winner in personal injury) and the other suit involved witnesses who were not credible (probably going for a shakedown too).
Even if you still believe that MJ molested those kids, it is tasteless to make fun of a dead person.
If you still insist that you were correct in your position, you would be fine with being "tasteless" to the dead. If that is so, I would like to ask for your permission to defecate on your corpse (once you die, duh!) in front of your family during your funeral and talk about how you were once a lawyer/law student (a job chosen for the mongruls of society).
