BarBri Boredom: Is This Cute, or What?

From a bored Bar/Bri student:

This is how effective Barbri is this year: this little origami creature (see image below) was created by a student in the NY review course…. during the course. It took her two Corporations lectures and one Conflict of Laws lecture to complete. And she didn’t skip a beat — she had plenty of time to “fill in the blanks,” as we are instructed to do on our lecture handouts.

BarBri Bar Bri mascot.jpg

Can’t believe this elaborate creation is actually origami? Read more, after the jump.

After we expressed incredulity — isn’t origami simple stuff, like paper cranes? — the tipster elaborated:

It’s seriously made of little sheets of black origami paper…with the addition of the plastic eyes, ribbon collar (which includes a working bell!), and string whiskers. For the first day or so, we all thought she was rolling black joints. Then all the folded little pieces of paper started to take shape…

She literally brought a craft “kit” to class each day and spread it out on her desk. Talk about being prepared for class!

We wish the origami artist the best of luck on the New York bar exam. It sure would suck to fail the bar because you spent too much time folding paper rather than reading it.

Then again, arts-and-crafts skills may be more in demand than legal skills right now. At least the creature creator has a fallback option! If she has been deferred by her firm, she could make an entire origami zoo during her year away from Biglaw.

Those lectures are keyed to the stupidest common denominator student. They could be taught in 1/5th the time with no loss of substance. It just reminds me of how stupid those folks that fail the bar must actually be.

Repeat after me: SELF STUDY

You can be in Russia, Malibu, Florida, or your living room. "Class" whenever you want if you have INTERNET. And you SAVE TIME because you don't have to "primp" (dress nicely, hair, etc) or travel to/from class.

Why in God's name would anyone pay to drive to a lecture hall at some God awful morning hour to simply watch a video lecture next to some type-A personality freak? The lecture videos are NOT very helpful anyway. It simply forces you to actually READ the outline. Though I must admit, I have a slight crush on one of the video professors.

ANYONE ELSE HAVE A CRUSH ON A LECTURER? If so, kaplan or barbri, and who?

Mine is Kaplan--Chris Fromm :-)

6 - Barbri doesn't allow people from all states to do home study. I could not. You had to live more than 100 miles away from an available place to take the course to be able to use the home study. It differs by state.

Yeah, BarBri is aimed at a level of comprehension slightly below the average high school sophomore. I did it by ipod last year and don't regret it-- it's possible to skip and fast forward with ease. It also allowed me to relisten to those lectures on fields I was completely unfamiliar with; I did Wills twice and skipped over secured credit altogether. The problem is, they charge more for the ipod. My V100 firm didn't blink an eye at paying the extra, though...

avatar
20 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, July 10, 2009 10:17 AM

I hear ya 17. Barbri wouldn't let me home study either, so I choose Kaplan. Which by the way, is significantly cheaper than barbri.

I had to purchase a router with a stronger signal, but I'm much happier attending class at my pool than I am in some stuffy classroom. I honestly don't understand why a person would chose in-class lectures over kaplan's self study (barring like the 3 law firms that won't pay for kaplan but will pay for barbri...I say the sheet while signing up at law school, and every firm paid for both except like 2 or 3 firms)

Just spend a few days studying last year's one page outlines and then take a sample test so you understand what you'll be facing and how they'll try to trip you up. You'll pass easily.

One word, four letters--- PMBR. BarBri should spend about one quarter the time they do on lectures, and do about ten times more practice tests. Practice tests, practice tests.

I can see how some would have a crush on Kaplan's Mr. Fromm, he's a pretty charming guy.

Is it me or do a number of the lecturers have voices that are similar to actors?

Kaplan Property (main lecture): sounds a bit like Bill Paxton.

Kaplan Criminal Law (main): sounds to me like Will Forte.

Anyone else?

I can't count the number of times that barbri incorrectly states the law in their lectures. My lecture notes/outline contradict at times barbri's own CMR outline. Ridiculous.

If it weren't free, I would never pay for this crap.

Is the simulated exam going to be these same worthless questions or did PMBR update the format?

I think the student featured in this story has found an alternative calling to law. I could place an order for hundreds of those origami figures and hand them out to associates at the firm to remind them of what career alternatives they have if they don't carry their own weight (i.e., bill the required amount of hours annually).

Hey , I just had a thought, do you think that if she fails the bar and tries to sue barbri she would be estopped from suing? Could you make an argument that barbri detrimentally relied on her promise to take the course seriously? I think it would work.

Whether they may be slow or not, I like hearing the %s of times certain topics are hit. . . you dont get that in the outlines.

Also, go leave. Have fun. Its 20 days from the bar, in the midst of a god damn recession the likes of which hasn't been seen. I'm gonna study may ass off and attend everything barbri has for the next 20 days.

Then I'm going to inject Patron into my veins for 60 days before I start work.

For some people origami might be something to do that still allowed paying attention (e.g. pen tapping or doodling or whatever for some people just gives their hands something to do while they can still pay attention).

I took Barbri for NY about 10 years ago (at a remote location, i.e. on video not live) and thought it was good/worth the money/better than self-study alone. Almost all lecturers seemed to know their stuff, most had a good sense of humor, etc. I wonder if being at a remote location with a much smaller group than at a live location made it easier to focus with fewer distractions...

One lecture that still sticks in my memory (parts, anyway!) as being incredibly useful was one by a former marker (or whatever they're called) who discussed among other things how to increase your chances of at least getting part marks when you have little or no clue what the answer is, with examples of what he meant.

I'm curious whether anyone who has taken Barbri courses years apart (e.g. for different jurisdictions if waiving in wasn't possible), what they thought of the program the 2nd time as a lawyer with years of experience.

It's the student's time and money to waste. If he or she just wants to fill in the blanks and do the minimum, no one is to stop him/her. An alternative could be to self study during that time, or make better use and study during class and pick up the lectures via osmosis, thus creating more free time outside of class. Or, the time can be wasted doing crafts.

BarBri should allow you to watch all the lectures online. I chose to watch the property video online, and I can truthfully say that I fast forwarded through at least 30+ minutes of Paula Franzese's story time/sing-alongs.

Seriously, why is bar review classes so boring. I skipped half of them and still passed the bar. Makes me wonder if the 3K is worth it. Heck, if someone takes the bar review course and fails the bar exam, they should be banned from joining the bar for life. It's simple memorize and dump, just like in undergrad.

Some of the lectures are good, some not. I'm just using books from 2008 and making the best of it. I still think the key is the MBE... a lot easier to crunch 6 subjects solidily and nail that test than it is to know the bullshit ins and outs of secured transactions, etc. That's how I passed CA, and that' how I plan to pass NY.
