Covington & Burling Owns the Summer
We have chronicled Biglaw firms that are taking drastic measures to reduce the money they spend on summer associates and recruiting. This spring, McDermott Will & Emery cut salaries of its summer associates. This week, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius canceled its entire 2010 summer program. And, in between, current summer associates and future summer associates have suffered all kinds of indignities.
But folks at Covington & Burling must be happier than a nerd in a library. The firm reached the Final Four in our Safest Firm tournament this past March. Now it’s telling current summer associates that the firm’s strong finish was no fluke.
After the jump, let’s all be jealous of the good fortune of those working at Covington & Burling.
Covington sent around a memo to all of its summer associates, assuring them that it’s a great thing to work at Covington. First, the firm acknowledged the financial struggles seen throughout the legal industry:
Some firms have recently announced that their current summer associates will only be eligible for offers with start-dates deferred until 2011. Other firms are limiting their fall on-campus interview programs and their summer programs. In light of these events, we thought it would be appropriate to reiterate Covington’s plans for summer offers and fall recruiting.
Sure, it’s bad all over. But at Covington & Burling, the future is so bright, they have to wear shades:
We have no plans to defer start dates. Offers to our current summer class will be for employment for the fall following graduation from law school for those not clerking, or following the completion of a judicial clerkship.
If you want to work at Covington next summer, they’ll still be coming to a law school campus near you:
With respect to fall recruiting and next year’s summer program, we are planning to pursue a typically robust schedule of on-campus interviews in anticipation of conducting our customary summer associate programs in the firm’s U.S. offices.Naturally, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to speak with any of the members of the Management Committee, our hiring partners or summer program co-chairs.
Covington & Burling summers sit at the head of the class.

"it's entire 2010 summer program"? Really?
"Uighur" is pronounced Salusa Secundus.
Would you date a unibrow Alyssa Milano in an '80s haircut?
Mystal, get some new pants, your fupa looks enormous.
I'm jealous. I should've interviewed there.
-Starting Jan. 2010.
This ship be floating...
You're right, there is no possibility that any of this is false or misleading. Firms just don't do that.
7 -
There are at least 2 firms in DC that don't need to mislead about this: Covington, and W&C. Covington is doing just fine because they're conservative in hiring/expansion and because they're, in large part, regulatory. W&C is doing just fine because . . . where the hell else are you going to go when you want THE best litigators?
Place is a dump. They have been second fiddle to Skadden DC for years.
If posts like this outnumbered (or, hell, even equalled) all of the sky is falling shit 90% of layoffs wouldn't be fucking happening. Elie Mystal and his fucking bullhorn has created an environment where firms can cut the fat, lower salaries, and pad their ppp with god damned impunity. Someday, we can only hope, these same mother fuckers were be held to task by avoidance of the most talented. But deep down we, as they, know it won't happen because Elie fuckin Mystal will be breathlessly advertising Shit Firm to 220!
8 - I sure as hell wouldn't go to White & Case.
"But the summers who work at or want to work for..." Bang-up job on the syntax there...
Mystal sweats when he breathes.

Two thoughts on Covington:
1. Yes, you're financially stable there.
2. Yes, you'll hate every moment of every day you spend working there.
#16 = fat person
OMG an interesting post today! Thank goodness.
IT'S A COOKBOOK!
Elie,
Why in the world would you be jealous of summers at C & B? Remember, you're just a chubby blogotard who has nothing to do with the SA's.
11 - I'm sure the poster was referring to Williams and Connolly with the "W&C"
Yeah Covington. Increasingly glad I work there.
11 you're a moron. It's Williams & Connolly
Must be nice to be at Covington.
Summer associates at Thompson Hine? Well, let me put it this way - our young associates view the law firm as a dog with too many puppies and not enough nipples. Best of luck to you.
Note to the partners - You know the summers are well aware that they're getting shit projects and make-work. I mean, you have to know that. So, all your efforts to smile in their faces and tell them all is well just makes you look like shit spewing asshats. That's what you are, so I'm guessing you probably don't mind much.
Asshats.
Oh thank God. Whether or not Covington will honor it's statement (it seems they will), we can all agree this is a SIGN OF HOPE, which is indicative that things aren't hopelessly FUBAR.
While the Biglaw model seems to have changed, it also seems to have survived without too much damage.
Specifically though, props to Covington!
-breathing a cautiously optimistic sigh of relief
Covington class of '10 will start before Latham class of '09 and Latham class of '09 will all be fired before Covington class of '11 starts
The litigators at Covington walk to the federal court house. They are all tough as nails.
#24--I heard there were a lot of nipples at TH...or was that cocks?
Based on what I know of the male partners at Thompson Hine, it is pretty easy to confuse their cocks with nipples.
I can understand your confusion.
Another positive story on ATL. Yay!
"Another positive story on ATL. Yay!"
What do you mean "Another"?
I guess I should have said another positive story TODAY. This was the one from earlier:
http://abovethelaw.com/2009/07/bingham_associate_testifies_in_congress.php
Latham NY laid off more than half the first year class and 45% of associates in total this year.
This followed Latham's "no layoffs" promise and a salary freeze "designed to prevent the need for layoffs."
8 - most hilarious statement ever made.
Hey 31, I'm going to shit in your mouth.
27
Stop scaring the Latham 09ers. Yes they'll probably be fired but there's no need for them to worry about that until 4 months after they start.
32: Oh yeah, that one. I assumed you meant about firms. There haven't been too many positive stories about firms, hiring. I can't think of any others I've seen on ATL actually.
27: You do that.
Well played, 11.
Hey 34,
I'm going shit in your mouth.

That's going to big a hell of a lot of crow to eat down the road for Covington.
My firm is in the same position as covington - incoming associates are not deferred or even delayed, no plans (and no reason) to pre-defer this year's summers, and recruiting on campus is going to be nearly at the level as past years. (Although they are planning for a smaller summer class next year, but Covington is lying if they say they aren't.) My firm just didn't spell it out in an email to current summers.
41 -
why say all that and not name your firm?
also, i don't really understand your snarkiness. on the one hand, you back-handedly criticize Covington for bragging about their position by spelling it out in an email to current summers, insinuating that your firm is better than that. but then on the other hand, while criticizing Covington, you come here and do the same thing? what you are doing is better than Covington because you're not seeking name recognition? even though you need everyone to know that your firm is just as good as Covington?
41 - Give us your address so we can send you a cookie.
Is this a PE peer firm?
Pls advise.
Venable Rules. No deferrals.
41 = gdc
41 could be Cleary
Yea I'm sure this is all true. That's exactly what my firm said two months ago too.
- deferred 3L w/ salary cut.
16 = Chaz Bono?
I take DLA prestige over Covington security any day of the week.
9, you realize Skadden deferred its summers, right? (PS, Skadden DC is even less selective than the already non-selective Skadden NY -- it's a factory)
51, you realize that 9 is just a schtick, right?
This is TOTAL BS. Covington JUST announced to it's current incoming associate class that if they leave in the Fall of 2010 for a clerkship, they are not guaranteed spots upon their return. It is a new firm wide policy. This is 100% not correct. Elie - follow up please.
Thanks, 53. I was about to add this as well.
SO EASY TO PREDICT WHICH FIRMS WILL LAYOFF/DEFER. REGRESS LEVERAGE AND % TRANSACTIONAL AND PEP. THERE'S A PERFECT FIT.
Settle down, 53. The new policy does not apply to incoming associates who have already accepted post-employment clerkships under the framework of the firm's prior policy. And I hardly believe this policy shift means that Covington's assessment of its economic health is "TOTAL BS."
So much for Hogan and Cov being peer firms...
Covington & Burling.....a rose among thorns. I once knew a former associate who snubed them because he was interested in law teaching. It must be so nice to be so smart that a lucrative law career in the nations capital can be scratched off the "things to do before I die" list.
56 is right. The minor clerkship policy change is hardly a big deal. The real news here is that Covington is doing right by its associates with regard to pay and job security, and its summer associates with regard to job security and start dates. There are other firms that are doing the same, like W&C, but they're few and far between.
What a weird post, 58. It's not like a biglaw gig is that fantastic (or lucrative, relative to other things very smart people do). It's something you do because you need the money and you're not "math-y" enough to cut it in finance.
"There are other firms that are doing the same, like W&C, but they're few and far between."
It would be great if somebody could put together a list of these firms or something. Maybe there's a website somewhere that does that kind of thing!
Wilmer summers who had offers at Covington must be kicking themselves...
I wonder if Covington plans to rehire that angry staff attorney who the firm fired or refused to promote to associate (according to her) for her race.
Does Covington do OCI at UPenn State?
64-
Yes, but only at the Dickinson campus in Carlisle.
Crap, I'm at the Philly campus...
God I'm glad I work here. People always told me it was "stuffy," but now I realize that "stuffy" means solid and dependable. Like that neighbor who drives the same car for 15 years and still hasn't bought a flat screen TV. Yeah, he could be fancier and flashier, and maybe the cooler guys make fun of him, but then the shit hits the fan and look who's sitting pretty now? Say what you want about Covington, but the people running it are exactly the type of people you want running your business. Not these money grubbing, greedy lawyer types. But people who acually have some integrity. Yeah, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they'll fire half of us tomorrow. But honestly, I'd be shocked if they went back on their word.
I wish I could put Covington inside of me.
