Deferral Friday Rolls On: Next Stop White & Case
There are times when Biglaw seems to speak with one voice.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
This week appears to be one of those times.
Current summer associates all across the land are learning that any cherished hope of starting work in 2010 was a fool’s hope. Coming into this week Skadden, Cravath, Orrick and Ropes & Gray had deferred current summer associates (lucky enough to receive offers) to 2011 or beyond. But this week we’ve seen Hogan & Hartson, Morgan Lewis, and Weil Gotshal defer some of their current summer classes as well.
White & Case is the latest firm to join the list.
Read the full memo after the jump.
Given everything that has happened at White & Case over the past few months, this news is probably not that surprising to current summers in New York. The firm released this statement to Above the Law about its latest decision:
White & Case’s New York 2009 summer associates who receive employment offers will be eligible to join the Firm in fall 2011. The Firm has yet to determine the number of offers that will be extended but, as in years past, fully expects that most, if not all, will get offers. We are fortunate to be able to attract the top law school students, and excellent performance tends to be the norm in our summer classes.
As King Théoden might say: “What can men do against such reckless hate?”
Of course, the majority of summer associates are at firms that have not deferred them to 2011. Yet.
Good luck summers. It’ll soon be over and you can retreat back to law school and regroup for the coming battle.
Earlier: The End of Biglaw?
So, What Are We Calling Today Exactly?

Yea! More layoff news! I was getting mildly comfortable having gone roughly an hour since reading about layoffs.
Anything more on the rumors about the chicks in Boston being above average smelly?
More Tolkein references plz
I would be shocked if White & Case still exists in Fall 2011
How about some details here W&C? Deferral stipend, health care, etc.? See Weil's memo a few posts below for how to do it right.
Also, as a deferred W&C associate myself (class of 2009), does this mean the firm may actually have some intention of starting us one day?
Mystal is often overheard referring to his lunches as "my precioussss..."
I'm not sure two firms announcing deferrals is enough to call it "Deferral Friday."
10 is the winner. Way to finish off the week strong.
Layoff news makes me feel all tingly.
And don't fool yourself -- a deferral now is a layoff in the future.
It's comedy gold just watching the associates delude themselves just from where I am sitting. It's gold, Jerry, comedy gold!
12 = 10
While I love the Lord of the Rings reference, was it really apt here? The stories you are reporting today deal with parallel action by peer law firms. The only comparable action in the Rings stories are among the protaganists, who did not bear any of the rings of men, dwarves, or elves, to which your quote refers to as the "ruled."
If anything, a sly Twombly reference would have been much more germane. (and I'm talking 550 U.S. 544, not the name of some house elf from the Silmarillion-Harry Potter fan fiction novel)
"the Silmarillion-Harry Potter fan fiction novel"
This made me laugh. Then I realized that knowing what the Silmarillion is makes me a nerd. Dammit.
thx, 10

Why even study for the bar? I'll never practice law anyway. Fuck this shit. I'm going to see the new Harry Potter.

A Lord of the Rings reference is definitely appropriate when you consider the All-Seeing Mayer Brown Eye.
Denethor's delusions and fears seem particularly appropriate for a law firm partner although I have yet to see a firm partner do a Minas Tirith jump like Denethor did.
Your career is dead, bitch.
how is this 'one voice', given the post on covington...? for big new york firms vulnerable to the wall street mess, this is standard. for DC, litigation/regulatory firms, such as Covington, Arnold & Porter, Wilmer, this kind of deferral is not expected...
The tip be drippin'
Just googled 'Silmarillion'
Since most current deferrals last until after this summers bar exam results come out, how likely is it that firms will look at bar exam scores and use those to evaluate their incoming classes? Will firms want to see such scores?
24
And?
Why don't you Google 2 Girls 1 Cup and tell us all about it?
just itched my neck
3 = fail, just because you suck.
25: Many jurisdictions don't give out bar results beyond passing or failing -- you'd only get a numerical breakdown if you failed or if you were trying to transfer your MBE score for purposes of getting admitted to multiple jurisdictions. Therefore, that's very doubtful. What's more likely is zero tolerance for people who fail as opposed to a chance to retake in the past. Some firms already started to do that in their first year layoffs.

Haven't there been rumblings out of Wilmer recently?

30,
Yes, rumblings from Wilmer, but not A&P...
Thanks, 25, for making me freak out even more.
I really gotta study...

Damn it, Elie, I'm sure there's a "Tolkein black man" joke to be made in here somewhere ...
Elie,
Just keep blogging, your doing fine. I like your posts.

LOL at being able to attract "the top law school students." Not top law school students, THE top law school students.

Where's the - 2009 is the lost generation guy?
Other than the obvious - one year isnt an "generation," I'm pretty glad that tool is gone. Did he really think firms would ditch an entire class, only to spend another 15-20k per new associate on the next batch?
31, you mis-googled. The Silmarillion is NOT a compilation of Tolkien's novels. Of course, mis-googling did lead us to the utterly bootylicious Ms Christine Feldman of Westchester, NY yesterday so all's well that ends better.
Anyway, here's a better Tolkien modified for the circumstances:
"Now big--law partners are cruel, wicked, and bad-hearted. They make no beautiful things, but they make many clever ones. It is not unlikely that they invented some of the machines that have since troubled the world, especially the ingenious devices for demoting, degrading and deferring large numbers of people at once, for schemes and plots and intrigues always delighted them, and also not working with their own hands more than they could help; but in those days (the 1990s) and those wild parts they had not advanced (as it is called) so far."
Disgrace
White and Case and many other firms should not have hired any summer associates if they even suspected they would not have them join their firms within one year. They may have permanently blocked or derailed the careers of some very talented lawyers-- Well if things keep going like this-- you know what's next- lies about performance. then litigation, litigation, litigation.
Where is that annoying "lost generation" guy? He always really annoyed me. Shit rolls downhill. Always has, always will. Every class between 2009 and 2013 or so is going to absorb some of it. For that matter, every class between 2000 and 2008 has already absorbed a bunch of it through layoffs, etc. Anyone too stupid to realize such a fundamental truth, who then goes on a blog screaming about how one group he is not a part of is screwed, really needs to re-evaluate his life and right to speak in public.
Is PE impotent?
"Every class between 2009 and 2013 or so is going to absorb some of it. For that matter, every class between 2000 and 2008 has already absorbed a bunch of it through layoffs, etc."
I think we all agree with this. The question is which class will bear the greatest share of the pain? Personally, I think it'll be the 2011's, but even there some people will make out okay.
It's virtually impossible to predict who will have it worst, because it is entirely dependent on factors external to the legal profession. The principal drivers of whether we have jobs or not is how much work clients need (duh), and just as importantly, how much demand there is for legal jobs outside of the firms, in-house at corporations, banks, hedge funds, etc. Enough jobs have to be created outside of Biglaw to work through the backlog of unemployed lawyers and then dip into all the currently employed associates who want to leave before jobs for graduates become available. It's going to be years and years before that happens. The class of 2015 might be screwed at this rate.
I agree with 49 - I think the Class of 2011 is screwed. About time for law students to eat humble pie and realise that the world does not revolve around them.
"The TOP law students" - hahahahaha....have they analyzed the typical profile of the students that they are able to attract?!!??!?!!
any news on the other non-ny white and case offices?
47--doesn't roll downhill if
it is plastered on you face or your pants are soiled.
Someone told me with all the deferrals--the California bar was deferred till 2525--just thought I'd
give everyone a heads-up.
Shit.
I'm in a non-NY office of W&C and the word is that the same will be coming for our summers here too. Sorry guys.
this whole issue may be moot for the current summers at W&C - I doubt W&C will even be around in 2011 - best to start looking for employment at a firm with a real business case
Van Winkle ain't deferring shit.
WTF is going on at McDermott DC?
i heard that kinky spalding is offering deferrals to lesbians willing to have sex with clients
they rock !
Wow, that is big. It's great to be class of 2013.
2010, 2011, and 2012 are so hosed
Yeah - W&C's activities these past few months have really dealt their reputation a deep blow. Can't imagine any graduate from a top-tier law school plumping for them. Which makes the "top students" comment by their PR department all the more laughable.
White & Case didn't get top talent to begin with, generally mediocre T14 students and law review TTTers.
You know who hasn't deferred anyone? Paul Weiss. But apparently we only hear about how awesome Covington is. How much are they paying you, Mystal, you fat turd.
Harry Potter is for little kids. So gay.
The ship be sinking...
HAHA #18. Cut my losses w/2 years of law school debt?
Wow this is depressing...
Any advice (besides drop out which is not an option, well explained by #67) for a Tier 3 law student rising 2L law review??? Constructive comments please
