Dr. Li-ann Thio: An Online Petition
There’s a minor new development in the saga of Dr. Li-ann Thio, the NYU visiting law professor whose views on homosexuality have made her the legal academic everyone loves to hate. It’s an online petition, addressed to the NYU law school and university administration, expressing “deep dissatisfaction with New York University School of Law’s appointment of Dr. Thio Li-Ann as a Global Visiting Professor of Law.”
The petition concludes by articulating the belief “that the Administration’s decision to appoint Dr. Thio was a grave mistake and her designation to teach ‘Human Rights in Asia’ is inappropriate and offensive.” There’s an additional option, selected by many (but not all) of the signatories, calling upon the administration to rescind Dr. Thio’s appointment.
You can check out the position, and sign it if you like, by clicking here. Currently the petition has 564 signatures.
A notable signatory, after the jump.
We skimmed through the signatures and noticed the names of a few friends of ours, but not many names jumped out at us. The petition might carry more weight if some of the names were also on NYU buildings.
One name we did notice: signatory #514, hot young playwright Jeff Whitty, a 1997 graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts (abbreviated “TSOA” on the petition). Whitty is the author of the phenomenally successful, extremely entertaining Avenue Q, which is ending a six-year Broadway run on September 13, 2009.
The internet is for porn — and for signing petitions against allegedly homophobic law professors!

seriously. I cannot believe there is another post about TTThio. And I bet this has nothing to do with resolving the issue of the manos malaki.
3 - Maybe you can start a petition to make her hands smaller.
Chances of this petition succeeding: zero.
Is there a petition for those who support the appointment?
Please, people, just shut up about this lady already. There are plenty of differing opinions (many "smarter" than others), but one of the great things about this country is the freedom for everyone to openly share their opinions... and to disagree with them. We don't need an idiotic protest petition. Just don't register for her class.
I assume that the people signing this petition are the same liberals who campaign for free speech. "Free speech for everyone, as long as I agree with it", seems to be the motto.
Someone needs to start a petition to cease all non-man-hand related posts about this loser.
7 - Ironic much?
She ripped that book in half right after that picture was taken.
Will the petition get more signatures now that ATL has linked to it?
Lat is a fascist.
If the "Human Rights in Asia" class is merely descriptive rather than normative, her appointment makes a lot more sense.
NYU is too TTT to realize this subtlety.
Is there a petition for those who DO NOT CARE and thus DO NOT READ articles about this woman to have Lat stop posting them?
I did not graduate from NYU. Can I sign?
This is ridiculous. First of all, human rights suck in Asia. If you want an accurate, educational course on human rights in Asia, you're not going to have some feel-good sandals-rockin' hippie as the professor. NYU Law doesn't need a visiting professor to whine about how bad human rights are in Asia, it seems that the students and current faculty are fully capable of doing that on their own. But if they want someone to actually teach about human rights in Asia and engage the students in active debate, without it turning into a non-stimulating agreement-fest of students and professor echoing each others' rants, bemoaning all the human rights shortages in Asia, Dr. Thio is the perfect appointment.
Stop bitching and stop demanding absolute conformity of opinion out of everybody. Disagree, discuss, and question, or just shut up. For the record, I'd be intrigued if Thio came to my (top 10) law school, and I'd consider taking that class.
I oppose the idea of human rights, and the appointment for that reason.
15 - The "petition" for that = Don't comment on this post (because more comments --> more traffic --> more Thio posts).
right after this picture was taken Thio grabbed the photographer and choked him with her massive hands and shouted
"you wanna live or die, bitch?"
SCHADENFREUDE!
14 and 17 are samesies!!!
Her hands are not that big, look at the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWqp3mLz4ko
Why hasn't anyone pointed out that NYU Law School has a relationship (including a joint degree program) with the National University of Singapore? NYU is not going to rescind Dr. Thio's appointment.
When is Mel Gibson coming as a Visiting Professor of Jewish Studies?
Classic Liberal- We support your ability to speak out on controversial topics.........if they are in line with our beliefs ONLY.
I hear that while Henry Louis Gates clears up his legal troubles, he'll be replaced by Michael Richards.
This is just a bunch of whiny NYU kids fighting for justice from their armchairs.
8 and 26 - you are absolutely right.
this petition makes me never want to hire any of these whiny twits from NYU.
Can we just clear up a small legal point here, you know, among lawyers? A private citizen telling someone to STFU, because you find her views offensive, in no way implicates that person's First Amendment rights. And if NYU, a private institution, told her to scram, that in no way implicates the First Amendment either.
She could get a milk crate and stand in Washington Square Park and harrange Jews, I mean, Gays, for being too rich and well-educated to complain about discrimination every day of the week all day if she chose. (A stunt I'd like to see accomplished in Singapore.)
Another idiot LLM coasting though the system.

Thio just ripped my phonebook in half! Dammit!
Who cares?!?!!?
Please tell us about the Steptoe summer. I believe his name is Rusty Kuntz.
Can we ban her from having sex?
Why is it that people here seem more incensed over this professor's views on homosexuality than with John Yoo's views on torture?
Sure, it's pretty homophobic to say that you think gay sex is wrong, but John Yoo actually testified to Congress that he thought it was legal for the President to order the torturing of a suspects innocent children!
Which is worse, advocating the criminalization of homosexuality or advocating torturing children?
If anyone needs to be fired, it is John Yoo:
http://www.tinyghosts.com/johnyoo/
They let Ahmadinejad come to Columbia for christ. Let the woman teach and the Lat Posse can go picket her.
Definition of Irony: From the PetitionOnline website where this looney left petition is floating:
This is the marketplace of free ideas™
First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States : "Congress shall make no law...abridging...the right of the people peaceably
to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
The public forum of PetitionOnline is privately sponsored, so we do reserve the right to refuse submissions arbitrarily.
A petition is a classic expression of free speech. It's not like they are forcibly preventing her from entering the building or something. She's entitled to her bigoted speech, NYU is entitled to give her an appointment, and the NYU community is entitled to express their outrage.
So would a happy ending from her be:
(a) great because of all of the surface area she can cover with each tug; or
(b) would it be a shot to the ego because she'd make your pecker look smaller than normal?
8 - correct - enough of this already
This is racism against Asians. If she were H.L. Gates everyone would be afraid to say anything.
The Liberal Mantra:
Do as we say, not as we do
since we are so much smarter than you
I see the gay mafia is alive and well.
"we don't want second class marriage"
"we don't want people telling us they disagree with us!"
"rainbows"
it's just ridiculous
Liberals are ignorant, plain and simple.
Why, after making accusations in mutliple posts, do you finish with "allegedly homophobic"? Please, respectfully, grow a pair. Either you think she is homophobic, which is the reason for all of the posts in the first place, or you don't, which makes this whole thing pointless. If you want others to put themselves on the line by signing a petition, please do the same and drop the "allegedly" cop-out.
8, 26, 29:
nobody wants to "stop" her from speaking. we all want free speech. nobody wants to prevent anyones speech. we "liberals" just want nobody to LISTEN to stupid viewpoints (i.e. those that we dont share) I dont want her to get fired for her views, I would rather see her classes so underenrolled that she gets fired because nobody wants to listen to her. that kind of "silencing" IS the essence of free speech.
morons. nobody listen to 8, 26, or 29 (who are probably all the same person anyway.)
An aside: Thio is over 40, unmarried, and not a little butch. Suppressed lesbian self-hatred, anyone?
37,
arguing that the presidents powers legally extend to torturing children is not the same as advocating torturing children. the first is just a legal argument--constitutional and statutory interpretation--not normative.
watch your fallacies, there, Suffolk.
Irregardless, it will be interesting to see how the administration reacts.
"irregardless" is not a word dumb ass.
i love how the gay machine reacts to diversity when it fails to support their message.
47 = correct.
telling someone to shutup because they're stupid is not the same as saying that person should not be ALLOWED to speak.
nobody has said she shouldn't be ALLOWED to say the things she does, just that nobody should pay her any mind.
sounds like the free flow of ideas to me. she's welcome to say that nobody should listen to liberals too.
Who gives a crap about this. Lat, cover the Erin Andrews story. i mean, once again, TMZ has superior legal coverage to you. And Harvey Levin didnt go to Harvard and work at Wachtell but he runs circles around you when it comes to Editing content.

Thank you for your honesty - finally one of you admits the truth!
What is the difference between not letting someone speak and harrassing and threatening someone into silence?
Reading some of these posts reminds me of grammar school - "hey, everybody, ignore Betty! she's not cool, she doesn't believe in everything I do! Don't listen to her!"
These are very scary times for our country.
Its open season on Conservatives. Enjoy it while it lasts because once Obamacare fails we're headed straight back to 1994 kids. You have exactly 1 year three months to villify the GOP.
I am genuinely surprised at how invested the posters at this board are in this issue; it certainly speaks to the demographics of ATL, and I guess Biglaw associate ranks more generally.
FINALLY--A member of the Obama team who makes sense:
President Obama's "science czar," Paul Holdren, once floated the idea of forced abortions, "compulsory sterilization," and the creation of a "Planetary Regime" that would oversee human population levels and control all natural resources as a means of protecting the planet -- controversial ideas his critics say should have been brought up in his Senate confirmation hearings.
Those plans include forcing single women to abort their babies or put them up for adoption; implanting sterilizing capsules in people when they reach puberty; and spiking water reserves and staple foods with a chemical that would make people sterile.
To help achieve those goals, they formulate a "world government scheme" they call the Planetary Regime, which would administer the world's resources and human growth, and they discuss the development of an "armed international organization, a global analogue of a police force" to which nations would surrender part of their sovereignty.
Worth considering for context in the academic freedom debate:
Professors of Middle East history and culture routinely -- nearly universally, in fact -- denigrate a country in the region in which they are experts. People protest the mistreatment of Israel in this context, but they don't say the professors in question should be fired, just that neutral professors should also be hired.
52 = missed 47's point entirely.
ATL has hit rock bottom. Unless this lady is tied to the Michael Jackson murder please stop blogging about her.
Thanks,
your mom
Forgive my ignorance, but its suddenly become clear to me that Lat is a butt pirate. Thoughts?
55,
"What is the difference between not letting someone speak and harrassing and threatening someone into silence?"
while i disagree that anyone calling Thio an idiot is "harrassing and threatening" her, or in any other way coercing her not to speak, I think that even between those characterizations, there is clearly a difference.
in one of them, you're not letting someone speak (the first one, duh?). in the other one, you're just better at speaking than they are so more people follow you, so yeah, "Betty" looks like an idiot. not coercive, just a plain old, fair victory.
Cool kids win again.
Bitter much?

62 here. I retract that statement.

not sarcasm. I genuinely agree with 47.

Please make some indication in your future posts as to whether you are bottom or not. I think u r a total qt, but I only like bottoms.

Just don't take her class and be done with it!

The moderator is a mean head. Stop removing my comments!
Dear NYU law students,
Move on with your life. No one cares what you think. Why don't you instead, take the time to try to understand (not agree, but just understand) where someone is coming from so you can have an educated, informed discussion on the topic?
I don't agree with her stance, but I didn't agree with most of law school profs - my con law prof was a liberal nut job, even by law school liberal standards. Who cares? I took the class, learned where he was coming from and now, I can react intelligently to those I disagree with instead of acting like a petulant child.
Now go away.
I surmise that the basis of her anti-homosexual views is that she has a bit of a jealously issue. It is clear she would love a good corn-holing.
OMG i would sooo check out Thio-breaker...

Lat is clearly trying to normalize dysfunctional homosexual behavior. It is normal and healthy to strongly dislike ("hate") homosexual behavior. It disrupts and weakens orderly society.
20 made the statement that got other comments removed. Arbitrary moderation much? I'm guessing Lat didn't bother to read the Kash's post quoting "you wanna live or die, bitch" before censoring.
Or he's a fan of the unreasonable recipient approach to true threats.
I am the great Cornholio. I bring you petition, for your bungholios.

I must hasten to correct an earlier remark I made.
I stated that she msut be a latent, self-hating lesbian, and that is clearly in error. Upon examination of those gigantic paws, "she" is obviously a transsexual.

Everyone who is considering signing this online petition, please watch the movie "PCU."
We're not gonna protest?
We're not gonna protest!
We're not gonna protest!
I'm posting for the first time in this thread. 47, I generally agree with what you say about the free exchange of ideas, in theory. However, in all sincerity I actually want to fly to NYC and listen to this woman speak simply because the vitriolic reaction to her has been so obscenely over the top I cannot believe it.
Also, the irony here is that she hasn't actually arrived yet and taught her course. So she hasn't been given a platform yet to speak. Instead, you guys are trying to intimidate the university into rescinding her invitation, thus depriving the student body of the chance to even listen to her in the first place.
I'd have much more respect for students who just let her come and do her thing and shrug and go on about their day. If she has nothing useful to say it will quickly become apparent. But trying to silence her at the outset sends the wrong message.
cool kids win again!
101 because she hasn't arrived yet, and she will presumably be flying in from the gulag, she still has an opportunity to become a member of the mile high cornholio club--what luck
Actually 101, I agree with you.
But even if the "don't listen to her" cry is taken up too soon, it is still not censorship--it's just a popular counter-opinion. The conservatives on this post want to make it some kind of denial of free speech or something. It's not. She's allowed to speak, but that doesn't mean that anyone is obliged to give her a forum or to listen to her.
Disagree if you want--you can even shout LOUDER than us if you want--but stop crying foul.

@96:
competing petition w/0 sigs?
lol@ttt "free speechers" without courage of their convictions.
there is the petition, go sign it if u think TTThio should stay
How about a petition to request that this be the absolute last time ATL posts on this subject matter.
106 -
In between a "should stay" and "should go," there is a middle ground. I think that's what most people who are unhappy with the petition are referencing. It's not a matter of "should" anything. Once you move into the "should" this or that, you actually are censoring - and you are doing it based on content. I think few people (hopefully) on here actually support* her message, but they do support the idea that censorship based on content, regardless of the viewpoint, is counter-productive.
I'm sorry you live in a little world filled only "shoulds" because I'm pretty sure that means you never actually listen to anyone with differing views, but rather bark at them.
Also to the retard that thinks conservatives support this woman - I'm sorry your mother ate lead paint chips when she was pregnant with you b/c that is an ignorant, blanket statement.
Do online petitions ever work?
PS congratulations to the ATL editors for 11 days without making an ethnic slur, Hurrah!!!! Way to go gang.
@104,
Would you be saying the same thing if the "majority" that you claim, had viewpoints different than yours? Or are you hiding behind some high-horse idea? If you really believe what you are saying, then the majority is always right. I can respect that opinion, if you truly think that, but if you invoke it when it is convenient for you but try to disregard it when it is not, you're a moron.
59, I was wondering when someone would cite that example (or that so many said ahmadinejad should speak at Columbia).
Anyone who is trying to get her booted or silence her is a hypocrite and intellectually dishonest.
It'd be nice if once in a while rather than running from a debate and just trashing anyone they disagree with, liberals would actually try to engage in thoughtful dialogue to prove their point. At least at NYU that clearly doesn't happen.
110,
I never said the majority is always right. I just said that if the majority shouts loudest, that is not a denial of free speech.
104
14 - you display your own TTT-ness by assuming there is an objective description readily distinguishable from the normative. a decision about what a "human right" is and how to teach "human rights" necessarily entails normative conclusions, even if they are not readily apparent (e.g., “you cannot make a human wrong a human right.").
This petition is gay. HA! Can't believe nobody had said that!
104/112
So if the majority shouts the loudest, but with viewpoint different than yours, is that ok? I'm assuming, yes. Then I can respect that. It doesn't appear many people on this post feel that way though.
110.
Laaaame. Watchout the PC Police are comin' to get ya. So much for the vaunted high IQs out there on "the other left coast."
108,
thanks for the ad hominem attacks--very constructive. The reason I have been calling Thio supporters "conservatives" is because it was clearly Thio supporters who were calling Thio detractors "liberals"
see the quote marks around "liberals" in 47? Those are there because I am just "going along" with the lines that the "conservatives" drew before I started commenting.
paint chips...classy
115 that is absolutely okay.
110
in fact, 115, that is what happened when california voters said yes to Prop 8. They outshouted.
I disagree with them, but they outshouted. So the no on 8 people shouldnt cry foul.
we can be as pissed as we please, but we cant cry foul.
110 following up to 118
117,
Oh, well, as long as someone else did it first I guess thats ok.
Good work.
I never said they weren't morons either -- which they clearly are. Of course the problem you face is that their assumptions are more likely to be true because to only reason people can cite for getting so angry, is her view point, and statistically, liberals are more prone to support the gay movement. On the other hand, liberals, conservative, libertarian, federalists -- all have a hand in the speech censorship pie.
good points 120. You're smart.

holy shit look at those hands
This is a proxy war between Asians (who statistically outperform whites, hispanics and African Americans on every intelligence test ever devised) fronting for conservatives who believe in advancement based on merit vs. the LGBT lobby fronting for liberals who believe in advancement based on skin pigment so as to rectify past injustices So, even if a conservative personally disagrees with her views, he/she will tend to support her based on the underlying characteristics that she represents. Likewise, liberals detest her because she is from a group who excel in math and science. Asians are kicking our ass--let's take it out Dr. Thio!
I, thus, as a good progressive American, detest the good Doctor. And I am inspired that President of the United States is on my side. George W. Bush would never have spent political capital on a group whose defining characteristic is based on the right of a man to find love in the anus of another man.
allegedly?
If NYU terminates the good doctor solely for her views (regardless of their substance), the school should be demoted to TTT retroactively back to say . . . um . . . December 15, 1791.
101 - She has had a platform - the Singapore parliament.
There is also about half an hour of footage of her on YouTube. So we HAVE heard her speak her views.
ÄžAĂťS are weird.
This must be as close to litigation as these NYU students will ever get.
I think this whole situation is just a pure show to focus on her and NYU. Think about it... If she says one thing or the other, which one will people notice?

PE, don't be so down. The scores on the BarBri simulated exam are always lower than you expect.
ATL has officially become too influential! Absolute power does what now?
Ya might find this shocking, but there actually was a time when the left championed free speech as a general matter, not merely falling back on "this is what I have to do under the first amendment and this is what I don't have to do."
Okay, they may have been BS'ing then just like they BS about it now, but it actually happened.

Agree with 4. LMAO!
I do not understand why she has to resign based on her views about homosexuality. Doesn't this country allow freedome of speech? Did she physically harm anybody because of her views? The world is not just for the liberal or the conservative. Why can't a law school allow a homophobic human right law professor?
As a liberal, I do not agree with her and even wonder how she can advocate human rights - which I believe include gay rights as well. That does not mean that she has to step down. I am not familiar with her views on human rights.. However, if her views on human righs academically make sense, asking her to resign just because she is homophobic would be suppressing one's freedom of speech.
Maybe they can take over the cafeteria again?

NYU is pimping for U of Liverpool?
Even after all this publicity the petition has only gotten under 700 signatures comprised of mostly people who have no interest in the law school: NYU grad school losers, NYU undergrad losers, and NYU non-law-alumni losers. I guess the gay-loving population either isn't so gay-loving, or her ideas are not as extreme as some portray, OR maybe there are actually people out there that want open discourse. What a concept! Oh, maybe what the gays are looking for is intercourse...that's different....
From the facebook group:
John L. Peschel, former Associate Dean of NYU Law School has signed our petition, and even checked the box for the administration to revoke her invitation!
Michael Dougherty, TSOA Class of 1996, has signed the petition! He is a screenwriter who co-wrote X2 and Superman Returns!

Lat is a queer little Mao wannabe.
I have followed this controversy for a while, mainly through Lat's posts on ATL. Thio is a homophobic bigot and an idiot. Conservatives (e.g., 150) who post on ATL are even dumber than she is. In sum, however, her appointment should not be rescinded. Let's hope to God that she shuts the fuck up and stops whining about this by the time school starts.
157 - Let's hope that that these liberal hypocrites find better things to do with their time than circulating meaningless petitions.
Partner Emeritus signed for her to be able to stay at NYU and become Of Counsel after her visiting term ends
We had the same problem at Berkeley Law with Jon Yoo (http://www.law.berkeley.edu/faculty/yooj/ ) who wrote memos for the Bush Administration, justifying torture...
You can imagine how the Berkeley community reacted at the time...
But we decided that a university such as Berkeley must accept differences of opinion and that a Professor should never been fired or forced to resign because of his or her opinions.
NYU students are free to take Thio's classes or not. They will not be forced to listen to all her bullshit.
Yoo wrote the memos YEARS AFTER Berkeley hired him.
Thio gave her speech to support the criminalization of homosexuals BEFORE NYU oppointed her.

51 - "Irregardless" is, unfortunately, a word. Sorry to tarnish those warm memories of receiving great wisdom from your third grade teacher.
"Minor development," indeed. Waste of time.
- Gay associate.
Why is someone who disagrees with some aspect of gay rights labeled "homoPHOBIC"? The term would be appropriate if there had been a clinical diagnosis that the person in question had a phobia towards homosexualtiy, but that in case they would be deserving of respect and sympathy in overcoming their phobia, and perhaps a guest stint on Dr. Phil's couch to work through their issues. For most people, dislike of gays, disapproval of homosexual conduct, or disagreement with gay rights isn't a "phobia," any more than sexist or racist beliefs are phobias. We should stop the psychobabble.
- signing the petition to stop labeling everyone who disagrees with me as "phobic"
168 - "irregardless" is not a word. if you use a real dictionary, no wikipedia, you'll find that some dictionaries do contain the word -- and the root of the word is a language confusion by people who confused: "irrespective" and "regardless."
sorry, you lose.
170,
I think it has to do with the term "phobic." see, no one understands what it means and morons like 168, who think irregardless is a word but can't explain how irregardless and regardless could mean the same thing, walk around tossing out whatever comes into their pea-sized brain.
so, its not you, you actually understand words and their meaning. unfortunately, not many people do.
if someone who believes God spoke to them and told them gays are the link to armageddon is no thomophobic, I don;t know what is.
(she wrote this in her recent book, mind the gap)
@168
a. What does the prefix "ir" mean?
b. What does "regardless" mean?
I'm embarrassed to be an NYU alum right now... and not because they hired Thio.
Dear NYU current students: calm the hell down! I put up with every dyed-in-the-wool liberal prof that you all loved and swooned over, and didn't feel it necessary to bitch about it. Thio's clearly a bit of a right-wing loon, but would it kill you to occasionally tolerate a difference of opinion? Your shrieking (still) hurts my ears.
Thanks!
I believe in diversity of thought -- everyone has the same opinions as me, right?
I sincerely hope all the people griping about "freedom of speech" on here are neither law students nor lawyers.
Telling someone to shut up does not restrict their freedom of speech. Ignoring someone does not restrict their freedom of speech. Calling for a professor's resignation does NOT limit their freedom of speech.
Nothing the students are doing limits Thio's freedom of speech. She can still buy herself a bullhorn and shout whatever she wants on whatever street corner she feels like. She's not being arrested or told not to speak by the government.
Private citizens (AKA the students and other petition signers) rejecting the views of another private citizen and calling on their school not to endorse those views has nothing to do with freedom of speech.
---------------------------
Both sides need to stop telling each other to shut up. It does absolutely nothing to prove a point. Reject Thio's views by offering a more logical alternative to them. It takes more work, but its also a lot more effective.
177 - And not endorsing her views should have nothing to do with her continued employment. Firing her because she has certain views on a social issue just shows that the school and students flaunt the idea of diversity, so long as everything comes in a shade of blue.
ATL. Epic Fail.
Please stop subjecting us to this. I would rather get a rough handjob from TTThio and risk serious permanent disfigurement than read one more post or stupid comment about this.
Enough already Jesus H. Christ.
172,
Thank you for your support and reassurance.
I think you and I are pinhead-phobic.
Irregardlessly yours in rediculous Grammatical mistakes,
170
Also, epic fail to all those people that love to scrutinize people's posts to find a grammar, spelling or punctuation mistake and then point it out as if to make them look stupid. This is a message board, not a client memo. You can all promptly and painfully die in a fire

178 - I completely disagree with that statement. Hiring her to teach a subject as a visiting professor sends a message that the school believes her to be an authority on the subject. That is a tacit endorsement of her views on the subject she is teaching.
If she were hired by some other school at NYU to teach astrophysics or advanced mathematics or something along those lines I would agree with you completely. However, she was hired to teach a course on human rights. Her personal beliefs on human behavior, race, religion and homosexuality directly inform her teaching of the subject. It would be incredibly naive to believe they do not.
It find it disheartening that people are trying to make this a liberal/conservative issue. The issue is her qualification to teach the subject she was hired to teach and that is in question.
That said - I don't particularly give a shit about "diversity" for diversity sake. If all the qualified professors are conservative then great. If they are all liberal then that works too. What I'm for is fairness in academia. An acknowledgment that some people didn't get the same advantages as others to get where they are and that some people's views are informed by different life experiences.
Thio's views are informed by her life experiences as are the views of those who are protesting her. As far as I'm concerned, if the general consensus of the student body is that her view are repugnant then they should have a right to call for her resignation. Just as the school has a right to heed or ignore that call and just as Thio has a right to maintain her beliefs whatever they may be.
Has anyone heard of the concept of not registering for her class if they don't like her views?
183,
Your plan sucks because then I wont get to ride around on my high horse.
@post 5 "Chances of this petition succeeding: zero."
FAIL.she's out dahling
odds of 14 just waiting to use his shiny new word "normative" in another posting: north of 90%.
