Memo to the New York Times: NY Law School is not NYU Law School

Times are tough for the paper that gives us all the news that’s fit to print, so we almost feel badly about calling the old girl out on this. But it is the New York Times after all.

The paper recently mentioned NYLS-grad-turned-cupcake-entrepreneur Lev Ekster, who’s gotten lots of attention from us, as well as from other media outlets. But this recent article on the vendor truck turf wars incorrectly states that Lev is an NYU Law grad. Here’s a screenshot:
NYU law grad.jpg

The NYT is not the first to make this mistake. When Thrillist first broke the cupcake story in mid-May, it made the same mistake, since corrected. We all make mistakes, but we’d like to try to prevent the MSM making this one in the future. Here’s our memo (with love):

To: The New York Times and other media outlets
From: Above The Law
Re: New York Law School vs. New York University Law School

  • New York Law School is not New York University Law School.
  • NYLS is in Tribeca. NYU Law is in Greenwich Village.
  • NYLS has 2 Girls 1 Dress. NYU has Arthur Miller.
  • NYU Law is ranked the fifth best law school in the land. NYLS is ranked.

It is a mistake that comes up in the US News rankings of part-time programs. Because NYU is not listed, NYLS is ranked very highly -- obviously people are confusing the two. In the full-time rankings, where both NYU and NYLS are listed, NYLS is ranked all the way down in the third tier. There really can be no other explanation for this discrepancy.

Clearly, Kash has been waiting for an opportunity to bash NYLS, and the NY Times gave her the opportunity. This is truly sad and pathetic because the students at NYLS work just as hard, and are just as smart, as those who attend NYU Law. It is a proven fact that the top 50% of NYLS students would be just as successful at NYU Law. Why people feel the need to impugn any hard working students at any school is beyond me. C'mon, like President Obama said, we're all in this together. Let's support each other.

I know this is supposedly tongue-in-cheek, Kash, but the compulsion of law students from the T14 or so to constantly attempt to distinguish themselves in laymen's eyes is real - and it's pathetic, and embarrassing. It shows itself when it comes to places like Penn, Virginia, Michigan, and Chicago where your average jim doesn't necessarily recognize the "prestige" attached to the law schools. This frustration manifests itself in a kneejerk desire to set anyone straight who wouldn't be able to recognize the maxi-acronym HYSCCNMVPBCNDG. If these clowns had their way I'm sure the NYT would print a full retraction along with the full list of the USNWR rankings just so everyone is forced to know where everyone stands.

The ABA should require all law schools to engage in blind admissions. For example, if there are 125 seats at HLS, a lottery should be held for these seats for anyone who has a college degree (ditch LSAT, GPA, etc.--irrelevant to success) Set aside 20% for Hispanics, 30% for African Americans, 40% for Whites, 5% for Asians and 5% for remainder. All classes at HLS would be Pass/Complete. I would bet that the graduating class would be just as successful as any class graduating today under so-called merit based admissions.

87 - they are both part pf the Penn State University system, so technically the same school. I know there are some historical reasons why UPenn State Philly is treated differently from the other campuses (see for example the US News rankings), but this does not detract from the fact that it is one school.

It's no different from the two business schools within the Penn State system - Smeal and Warden.

The best example of NYLS and NYU fraud to reach the Windy City occurred in 2001 or 2002 when an attorney with the SEC who graduated from New York Law School circulated a false and doctored transcript to many leading firms in Chicago in which he had photo shopped the header of an NYU transcript on the top of the first page. Astonishingly (a) if caught the eye of only one leading Recruting Coordinator in Chicago (b) the firm did not turn the lawyer into the disciplinary committee of trhe state where he was admitted (c) the firm did not turn him into the SEC. For 2 box seats lower deck to a Bears game this Fall please guess why the firm did not do this.

    This guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonia_Sotomayor

I don't know, but I assume Sonia is a male's name in Spanish. It's definitely a guy though.

I agree with 37 - it's switched in the last sentence for rhetorical effect. 12 is an idiot.

However, agree with 91 as well: "bad," not "badly."

92 - "Recruting Coordinator in Chicago" = NYLS Alum?

The only rating I would take into consideration these days, would be which school has better looking women. I went to neither, but there's far more talent in that department at NYLS

No, Kash did NOT go to law school.

She was a paralegal for Covington so she thinks she can blog about this sh*t.

What a b*tch. I hope I run into her when she is running along the East River in the morning so I can give her a piece of my mind.

The one distinction that this article missed:

One NYLS alumni was a justice of SCOTUS. No NYU alumni has ever been a justice of SCOTUS.

Also, 104-105 is 100% correct, and the women of NYLS are notoriously loose. TRUST ME
