Why in sam **** did you want to be a biglaw associate to begin with? When you were a kid, I KNOW that you did not say, "When I grow up, I want to be a biglaw associate."

You want it for the money. You want it to pay off your loans. You want to use it as a springboard into more fulfilling legal careers.

Stop. Just stop. Take it from me. I was an associate and left biglaw several years ago after realizing that I was getting fatter, less energetic, weirder, etc.

You can make enough money to live a comfortable life and pay off your loans in another job (or another career).

What interests you about the law so much, anyway? If you like the law for what it is, then stay in the legal industry. But if you don't like the law or if you think you'd be happier in another career, then go for it.

You only live once, and while money is important, it's not everything. When you're lying on your deathbed, you're not going to wish you spent more time in the office or that you make another $10,000 or that you had another boat or whatnot.

Remember the important things in life: your family, your friends, your health, your happiness, and last, but not least, God.

I like the idea that someone proposed yesterday about offering to work for firms at a pay cut. This is simple supply and demand economics. If the market says that I cannot get a biglaw job at $160k, I will see if I can get one at $125k (or lower if necessary). Not much different than contractors bidding for a job. Everyone has to look out for themselves, right?

I have a feeling that some of these firms that cancel for 2010 will be hiring some 3Ls for 2011. It's not ALL that bad for 2010 2Ls. Don't get me wrong - it's bad - it's just not "the END OF THE WORLD."

Perhaps this could be a sign of a distinct move to the 3L hiring model. Who knows. It's not like the summer associate experience is really a "test of worth" or anything of the sort. Outside of recruiting, it's not really worth much. Currently, firms don't have to fight for new associates. I think the 3L hiring model will be in vogue for the next couple of years - at least until the firms have to fight for top talent again.

Maybe the blog should just start reporting which firms ARE having a summer program in 2010. Sounds like that might be the "catch up year" that employers use to reset back to the regular hiring schedule.

Attorneys should be paid on a commission-only basis like independent contractors. That would solve a lot of the problems with our legal system.

79: Not sure how familiar you are with summer programs, but if Milbank were to have a summer program next year, it would need to begin interviewing candidates beginning in even late July (starts earlier each year it seems) to September / October (Harvard and Yale used to wait until this late, but have recently moved their dates back).

In other words, if Milbank wanted to cancel its summer program and not also have to rescind callbacks and offers as well, it had to cancel now. Better to cancel now versus really putting next year's summers in an (even more unfair) bind where they've already accepted at the firm, declined all their other offers, and suddenly find out that there's no more summer program whatsoever. The timing might also work out that it's too late to interview at other firms too (especially if they received an early offer at Milbank and didn't do their other callbacks, etc.).

My point- we as a society have catered way too much to this generation, with helicopter moms, over scheduling, not making them work, etc. A good friend my age, whose family has almost more money than God, was asked by his father on the day he graduated from high school what he planned to do. Some people in my generation are entitled brats, fine.

Some of us have worked since before we were sixteen (to pay for everything you need when you are sixteen, plus car insurance, uncovered health care expenses, college application fees, college education, law school) and have taken out many loans to finance school because we see the value of education. Some members of our generation would never dream of telling their parents they were going to "sail for a while." A lot of our parents aren't professionals and MAYBE we wanted to be the first person in our entire family to go to graduate school. So f*** me for being disappointed that the years I decided to go to law school were the years the whole system collapsed. I'm class of 2011. Where does all of this hatred and anger come from? I previously worked for a number of years in the non profit field. I like working and all I want to do is learn as much as possible in law school and get back to being a producitve and contributing (employed) member of society.

I know what it's like to live on not much and I'm not in it for the money (though of course it would be nicer to pay off the debt faster) but I do want to work at a firm for at least a few years for the experience before figuring out whether to go back to the non profit /public service realm or stay in the private for-profit sector. Besides the fact that it's going to be just as hard to get a public service job soon because everyone and their brother are applying to public service positions, and thanks to several firms deferral stipends, some of my competition can do the work for free.

Of course the perks are nice but I just want an internship to get experience next summer and then a job when I graduate. With this economy I don't understand the business model of paying 30k for a summer internship and 160k for full time salary. There are lots of us out there ready to work for much less in return for having a job and getting good training and experience. Firms--please revamp your business practices for your sakes as much as ours.

back when I was in that world, summer programs were primarily the lead firms out of DC and NYC (which were maybe 200 attorney offices) trying to get top students in so that they'd say nice things about the firm when they went on to clerk on COA and US Supreme. It expanded obviously -- but I'm stunned to learn that hiring has to start in JULY for the next year.

I'm not sure our applicants had their grades or their law review creds in place by then . . .
