Good luck and god bless Judge Sears.
That's a powerful piece.

Thank you Leah Ward. I was just thinking that I wanted more government intervention into my personal life.

HAHAHA!!!! Yah, that's what I'd expect from a LATHAM partner.

9:00AM roll call of top firms that have laid off a majority of first year associates in 1 office, or cut 45% of associates in an office.

1. Latham

Never forget people, Latham made drastic, devastating, and unnecessary cuts in response to the recession. They did the same thing in the 90s. Other top firms have chosen to made only minimal cuts and ride out the recession with their attorneys. Don't forget which firms' partners actually have integrity.

What Leah Ward Sears meant to say was:

"Having secured a lucrative and ironclad pension from the State of Georgia, I am now ready to go about the business of making as much money as I possibly can. Here's my public cover story, which I have used to obtain thousands of dollars worth of free advertising from CNN. Hire me."

4: you realize that slamming your firm over and over again on this blog and the other internet message boards hurts your chances of finding a new job right?

and it hurts the chances of your laid off brethren and your soon to be laid off former colleagues as well.

Both this ATL link re: Chief Justice Sears and the CNN story are highly misleading, making it sound as if she just stepped down from the Court and did so entirely because of her brother (who committed suicide in 2007). See this AJC story, which clarified the timeline: http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/stories/2009/05/13/leah_sears_law_firm.html

So wait, why did Dave Gordon make this guy a Latham partner in the first place? He worked as an associate there for all those years and Dave Gordon NEVER noticed any character problems?

Hello esquires and esquires to be. I have a few questions and apologize if I'm hitting already-covered turf. Here goes:

1. Is networking recommended to land a job?
2. Could Kash be any hotter?
3. Is Miami White a better lover or writer?
4. Does intern Karen smoke after sex?
5. Is a JD a ticket to any career you want?
6. Over under on PE's real age- 25?

So did her white male supervisors at the SEC dismiss her concerns because she's black and female? Heads had better roll. The SEC needs to clear those people out like they were first years at Latham NY.

11 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, July 2, 2009 9:20 AM

It is virtually guaranteed that PE is a 19 year old

A JD can help you in any career, including working on Wall Street, or solving the California budget crisis

Networking is highly recommended, especially with people who have no intention of helping nor hiring you.

Love how Leah Sears lost the battle regarding budget cuts in the judiciary. The Supreme Court of Georgia is full of career clerks (2 for each judge and 3 for the chief) earning 6 figure salaries and actually only working 30 hour weeks.

Genevievette?

Anyway, with all the whinnying about Kash, I had to look on the Facebook. Yes, it's true---maybe not breaking necks in St. Marks on a Saturday night hot, but bona fide. Hotter than Ms. Georgia FWIW. Elie, is the polar opposite. He looks homeless. Sorry, but he looks exactly as one would picture a man who can't spell supreme. He might clean up better, but probably not. He needs a cut, a shave and a slap-chop. That's all.

I do agree with her that the "norm of one parent families" has to stop.

On information and belief, PE is a junior partner at the DC office of Akin Gump. Assuredly not a peer firm. Tsk tsk.

I agree with her view on no-fault divorce. The parent initiating a divorce without cause should rarely get the children.

avatar
19 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, July 2, 2009 10:01 AM

7 - thanks for pointing out that link. She clearly didn't resign to make a point or because she was depressed about the breakdown of family, her term was set to expire in June.

The politically incorrect answer for the reason of the breakdown of marriage in America is the rise of woman's rights. Women don't have to rely on men for their livelihood, so there is no need for them to remain in miserable marriages. This is a good thing.

There is nothing that can be done about it. Even if no-fault divorce was changed, couples would just remain separated.

20 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, July 2, 2009 10:02 AM

Hypocrite. She gets a divorce but doesn't think others should be able to also?

avatar
21 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, July 2, 2009 10:04 AM

Q: Why are Jewish divorces so expensive?

A: Because they are worth it.

avatar
22 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, July 2, 2009 10:10 AM

The Sears' family track record on marriage hardly qualifies her to give advice on the subject. But then if you read the piece closely she doesn't have any suggestions about what to do anyway. Venting in public seems to be the newest fad in Dixie.

23 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, July 2, 2009 10:11 AM

@18,

Sounds like a questionable rule (admittadly I also don't know what qualifies as "cause").

I picture a common scenario that Parent A is an asshole. Parent B is Mother Theresa. Just because Parent B initiated the divorce, possibly motivated by the children's best interest, why must there be a presumption against her?

24 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, July 2, 2009 10:18 AM

Before no fault divorces, married couples just made up reasons for the divorce so that it would fall into one of the fault divorce categories. No fault helped to avoid this dance, where one spouse had to be blamed for the breakdown in the marriage.

I like 18's idea too since it provides an incentive not to divorce. But spousal abuse is the ace-in-the-hole argument that always wins.

19, you are right when talking about couples who at least gave it a shot and got married at one point.

I think this country has a much larger problem with people who never got married in the first place and the millions of kids who never had a shot at a 2 person family.

The money quote on the Madoff story:

"Walker-Lightfoot's supervisors on the case were Mark Donohue, then a branch chief in her department, and his boss, Eric Swanson, an assistant director of the department, said two people familiar with the investigation. Swanson later married Madoff's niece, and their relationship is now under review by the agency's inspector general, who is examining the SEC's handling of the Madoff case."

Agree Kash is hotter than Miss Georgia. Given that I live in Georgia, though, and will almost certainly run into Ms. G. at UGA Law events as an alum, I think it's inevitable I'll end up marrying her instead. Oh well.
