Tragedy At Southwestern School of Law
It’s a pretty sad time at Southwestern School of Law. The National Law Journal reports:
The recent murder of a 17-year-old girl who was abducted near the Los Angeles campus of Southwestern University School of Law has sent shockwaves through the law school. The victim’s mother, Deborah Drooz, a partner at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, had just finished a summer course as an adjunct professor at the school.
The victim, Lily Burk, was leaving Southwestern’s campus when she was abducted. A suspect has been arrested for her murder:
Burk had just picked up some paperwork at the Southwestern Law School’s building for her mother when she was abducted on Friday afternoon, according to recent press reports. During the next hour, Burk called her parents, asking how to withdraw cash from an ATM using her credit card. Her beaten body was discovered in her car Saturday morning at a downtown parking lot. A 50-year-old transient, Charles Samuel, who had entered a drug treatment program near the law school’s campus, has been arrested for her murder.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ms. Drooz and her family.

distable comments
No need for this story.
I think we should never turn off comments idiots notwithstanding.
We have gone too soft on crime in this country and people who commit violence offenses need to be put away (or put out). People say the death penalty doesn't work as a detterant (and maybe they are right) but it would work a lot better if we used it a lot more. In any event the death penalty would save the state funds used to house the criminal.
Does anybody have a theory as to how this girl got abducted in the middle of the afternoon in a crowded area of Los Angeles? One minute she's carrying her mother's papers, the next minute she's on a surveillance camera as a passenger in her car with the crackhead transient driving. He didn't have a gun. Why didn't she just scream or run away? Then she calls each of her parents on her cell phone and calmly asks how to get money from their credit card. You'd think she could have said something that would have tipped them off.
My best guess is that she sympathized with her murderer and thought she could help him or at least talk him out of harming her. She volunteered in a homeless shelter and at a needle exchange program. I'm thinking she was too progressive for her own good.
NO COMMENTS PLEASE
10, the death penalty certainly deters the recipient from committing future crimes.
A conservative is a liberal who has been mugged.
Turn off comments.
And a liberal is a conservative with a convicted child.
Elie, show some tact and disable the comments.
comments cant possibly be useful here..

My thoughts and prayers go to the family in this difficult time.
-Yale rising 2L secure.
I am surprised no one is talking about the need to carry a concealed weapon (not that I am in favor of it) . . . . Where are all of the 2nd amendment lovers??
what's with the idiots that always whine "turn off comments." what a stupid comment. every time you say "turn off comments" like a dumbass caveman, you tempt some douche doing doc review to say something stupid.
"comments cant possibly be useful here.."
Sure they can - to drive up ad revenue for ATL
Half of the comments on this post will be requesting Elie to disable the comments and the other half will be responding to the few idiots that make "outrageous" statements
10 ... the pricetag of the mandatory appeals far outweigh the cost of housing and feeding an inmate for the rest of their life.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this young girl.

I suppose that I should know the answer to this question, but is Southwestern School of Law accredited by the American Bar Association?

27 - Too soon, man, too soon. Fail.
If you're going to delete tasteless comments (which we assume you've been doing based on the illogical number references) why not also delete comments simply saying "disable comments" ? You know, clean the whole thing up, including this comment.
I suppose I should know the answer to this question, but isn't it ATL policy to maintain the anonymity of law students as long as they don't get arrested?
23, you're a fucking idiot. The 700 people on death row in California should all be pushed off a cliff immediately. It's free, it would open up some space in the prison, and it would potentially save lives... (we know how libs love to get death row inmates out of jail).
THIS TRAGIC CASE will be repeated thanks to the DEMOCRATS running California. WHY? Because they are going to release 20,000 inmates as a way to save costs... all because they can't balance a checkbook.
Liberals will kill us all.
9 - The area surrounding Southwestern is super scummy. I believe it's within a mile of MacArthur Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacArthur_Park#Decline).
I almost moved into an apartment down the street and backed out because I couldn't imagine myself walking the streets at night.
Can someone please post info on how to make a donation in Lily Burk's name? This is such a tragedy, and I feel so horrible for her family that I would like to make a small gesture. I hope that if there is a fund, others will want to join me in making a donation of any size.
I am so saddened by this. But, unfortunately I am not totally surprised. I studied for the Cal Bar at Southwestern's Barbri course. One day while studying between sessions at the coffee bean across the street from the school, I was attacked by a crack addict. Luckily for me, one of the other people inside the coffee shop was a cop and stopped the person from attacking me. the area is very cute, but there are lots of people who should be getting help in a facility, who are just walking around on the streets.
I suppose that I should know the answer to this question, but isn't there a certain area of law that can be used to successfully prosecute this animal -- namely the highly-powerful, yet under-utilized, good Samaritan doctrine?
Words are inadequate to describe the senseless tragedy of this murder. Condolences will help her parents survive this- but this is the kind of unspeakable grief & loss that is constant.
37- you were forunate- and if waht you say is true than there needs to be an immediate crack downon crimainal activity. Lily's death should not be just be another stat.
The area around Southwestern is unsafe, even during the day. I was in trial in CCW, two blocks away, and saw crack heads lighting up on the court house steps. This is just a tragedy for the family and the school.
Not very timely, and also left out the most (ATL) relevant part - she was picking up law school exams from her mom's summer class, not just "paperwork".
I wonder if her exams will now be graded pass/fail. I further wonder whether students would have a section 90 claim, if indeed they were graded pass/fail.
This is awful. My prayers to the family and friends. May she now be at peace.
The real tragedy here is that students pay to attend Southwestern.
Moderators:
Nice double standard on the comments. When it is a black man supposedly assaulted by a white cop, then its open season on white racism. But when it is a white girl allegedly murdered by a black man, we can't discuss it?
Please explain.
I am an associate who has worked with Ms. Drooz (Ms. Drooz, by the way, is one of the smartest attorneys I have worked with) in the past. I am so saddened to hear of her loss. The great irony in all of this, is that Ms. Drooz is a tireless advocate of the rights of homeless and indigent residents of the downtown Los Angeles area. She represents them on pro bono matters regularly and has volunteered at a needle exchange program for many years. It is really sad that the very type of person she advocates for did this to her.
My prayers are with Ms. Drooz and her family. The evil man who did this deserves death.
45, what assault? You mean handcuffing? You need to grow up and live in the real world for a while.
Alleged power-trip arrest =/= murder of innocent bystander
Reasons why I hate what ATL has become:
1) Elie's racism
2) Stories like this intended to drive up website hits
47: Yet the alleged power trip arrest gets analyzed from a race perspective on ATL ad naseaum (poor, poor Professor Gates), but the murder of an innocent girl by a man who clearly, but for the deeds of misguided liberals, should have been locked up for life, cannot be reviewed from a race perspective (white victim/black criminal). Not PC, you know.
15, so you're saying that a liberal is a conservative who's been a bad parent?
How very sad.
23,
Notice how the cost is reduced in Texas? You need economies of scale in enforcing the death penalty.
http://www.amnesty.org/en/news-and-updates/news/texas-carries-out-200th-execution-under-current-governor-20090603
We have put down 16 this year and I'd favor a weekly execution to get the backlog taken care of.

Is there a way to set up the RSS feed for this blog so that you'll only receive posts by certain authors?
52: Good point. If you go to the Texas Department of Corrections website, you can read the last statements of the condemned (yeah, morbid, I know). But what's interesting is that, notwithstanding the claims of the Anti-Death penatly zealots, to a man (and occassional woman), the condemned usually comes clean when facing the executioner's needle, asking forgiveness from the victim and his/her family.
I subscribe to the Death Penalty not necessarily because it is a general deterrent, but because it is a specific deterrent--the scum being removed from society will no longer harm anyone (nor will the victim's family have to be worried that some day, a Sotomayor led court will release these miscreants.)
Texas SECURE
i am with 36. If you are going to run a totally non germane story, and open it to comments, at least let some good come out a horrible incident.
Dear moderators,
Thank you for leaving my not-so-sublte commentary about those championed by Amnesty Intl. on the comments for all of 3 minutes before you censored it...At least give me props with a: comment removed by moderators plug.
(Yet rude references Elie's girth/racism remain... Vexing)
Yes, push this douche off a cliff....and Elie too! ha!
A great tragedy and my prayers and thoughts go out to the family.
But... "up and coming neighborhood"? You've got to be kidding me - that whole area from downtown to Hancock Park is just shocking. And without any freeway access, forget living in any of those areas.
It's amazing what some city dwellers can think of as an "up and coming neighborhood."

I am disgusted that you are exploiting this horrible, horrible tragedy for political gain. Make your right-wing comments elsewhere. A young girl was senselessly killed and you are doing things like making fun of liberals and advocating gun use. Where is your dignity? Have you know shame? Your actions are very unChristian and will be judged by God and Jesus. SHAME ON YOU!

The reality is, the people who opened the doors to this "law school" have blood on their hands and should be tried for manslaughter, if not murder. Make the mother an accomplice for working there. This school shouldn't exist; nor should most of the other TTT that churn out law students into an over-supplied market. Clear causation here. But-for this law school being in existence, that girl would be alive today. Yet ANOTHER reason to start closing the doors of these sub-par schools.
Dear Police,
Please set Mr. Samuel free on # 60. Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation.

59 & 60:
I advocate executing the vermin that killed the 17 year-old victim. Why aren't you more sympathetic to the victim and not the scum that committed this senseless crime. I'm glad I have a license to carry a gun so that if similar scum try to attack me, I can defend myself and mete out justice at the same time.

Texas SECURE and armed
Elie, you fucking ass-lobster-tard - turn the comments off.
52:
I'm extremely sympathetic to the victim. I've cried over this. Words can't describe how upset I am. That's why I think exploiting this issue for your political positions in favor of the death penalty and guns is repulsive. This is not the time or the place to campaign. Why can't you right-wingers realize that not everything is conservatives versus liberals. Show some class and restrain from your right-wing agenda during this time of tragedy. You really should take a step back and think about why you are exploiting this terrible, terrible tragedy.
Again, though, you do not have to answer to me. You will have to answer to God and Jesus.

59/60:
I don't know where you live but I live in the greater Houston area. It is not my intention for this to seem cold but the fact of the matter is that we have a murder every other day on average. The perpertrator of those crimes should be executed.
We will all have to answer to God. (As an aside, I didn't know that left-wingers such as yourself believed in God.) My approach is quite simple. Let the murders immediately explain themselves to the Almighty in the hereafter. If you murder someone, you should be executed.
52
murder in the firsTTT degree
I don't think that's the only tragedy at Southwestern Law School--there's about three hundred that occur each year in the admissions office.
1. Life does not begin and end in Biglaw. Southwestern (not my alma mater) graduates more L.A. asst. d.a.'s and judges than any other law school.
2. Southwestern is in K-town, one of the trendier areas in our city and a favorite of 20-somethings. It is no more dangerous than a dozen of the half slum/half trendy Lower Manhattan neighborhoods.
Elie, you need to apply the same standard you applied to the Gates issue. If a white police officer confronting a black man is assumed to be guilty of racial profiling, a black person murdering a white person is presumed to be a vicious hate criminal. I notice nothing in your commentary about this.
52:
1. I'm sorry about Houston. That explains your ignorance. Every time I go there, my I.Q. goes down several points just from being there. It's one of the worst cities in America, and a place intelligent people who grow up there cannot wait to escape.
2. So called "left-wingers" are in reality much more true to religious principals than are people on the right. The beliefs you claim to hold (gun-loving/capital-punishment loving) are the opposite of the values and beliefs held by Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. This whole conservative/religuous connection is totally phony.
3. I never said this man should not be executed. He probably should. It's just pretty tasteless to start linking this case to political cause so soon after the tragedy. The focus at this point should be on this young girl, her life and her family, not the disgusting murderer.
4. I am not particularly for or against guns. But please explain how the young woman carrying a gun would have made a difference here. First of all, should a responsible parent let their 17-year-old daughter walk around with a loaded concealed weapon--one that she could have access to at a moment's notice should she encounter danger? I'd be scared out of my mind if my daughter was walking around with a loaded piece. Second, practically speaking, even if she had the gun, would she even have been able to draw it in time once she realized this disgusting murderer was trying to harm her?
