Weekend Non-Sequiturs: The Ninth Circuit Conference

Ninth Circuit seal small 9th Cir.jpgHere’s a final collection of links from the recent Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference, an event we were privileged to attend and to speak at last week. We thank the Ninth Circuit for the generous hospitality and warm welcome.

* We shared the stage with Nina Totenberg, Linda Greenhouse, and an esteemed federal judge (Judge Robert Lasnik (W.D. Wash.)). Somebody pinch us; was that a dream? [Legal Pad]

* What to expect from Solicitor General Elena Kagan. Also: she supports cameras in the courtroom at One First Street. [San Francisco Chronicle]

* If you’re planning a trip to Monterey or Santa Cruz, here are some good travel tips. [dagblog]

The Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference reminds me of an episode of Hardcastle and McCormick:

Judge “Hard Case” Hardcastle is nominated for a lifetime achievement award at an upcoming judge’s convention. In an unusual coincidence, the convention will take place at the same hotel as a major mob meeting. The judge pulls some strings at the hotel to reserve a room he considers “lucky”. Unbeknownst to Hardcastle, the room had been originally assigned to a hitman. During the first night of the convention, believing the assassin is in the judge’s room, someone leaves a rifle and a picture of mobsters Don Ferris and Sid Storm. Before the judge can bring these items to the attention of the authorities, he is ambushed and the items are taken. Since he can’t give the police any evidence, Hardcastle tries to warn Don Ferris instead. The mobsters don’t believe the judge until Sid Storm turns up dead. Establishing an uneasy alliance, Don Ferris and Hardcastle put together clues and realize the hitman is a man named Lee Orlando. Hardcastle also discovers that Orlando has a connection with “Bucky” O’Neil, his main rival for the judge’s award. Analyzing Bucky’s court records, Hardcastle uncovers evidence that his rival has been fixing trials for the mob. Meanwhile, Don Ferris learns that Hardcastle is the assassin’s next target. With the help of Mark “Skid” McCormick, the mobsters foil the assassination and Hardcastle captures Bucky. Afterwards, Hardcastle does not win the judge’s award, but finds himself the unlikely recipient of an award from Don Ferris and the mob.

Have I been asleep, or did ATL skip on this opportunity to shamelessly flaunt its success at drawing the ire of law firms? Don't worry ATL, I got your back:

Oh now I get it! So, I finished reading the article and it turns out it's really bad new for ATL. Sorry ATL.

Wait. You know what? You report as much bad news about our careers as possible. Why wouldn't you report bad news about yours as well?

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday shows that 29% of the nation's voters now strongly approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty percent (40%) strongly disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -11. That’s the first time his ratings have reached double digits in negative territory.

Elie was supposed to do these weekend posts but made a public disturbance when Lat asked him to work over the weekend and accused Lat of being racist. Obama then said Lat acted stupidly in expecting Elie to work over the weekend but a few days later recalibrated his statements when the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association and GAYLAW held a public conference supporting Lat's decision to ask Elie to do some actual work.

why is everyone dissing the guy who runs this website? Is he that much of a dweeb?

A BIG LIBERAL fuckfest. It's group therapy for dumb people.

Nina Totenberg and Linda Greenhouse? Two of the dumbest socialists currently alive.

And if you want to go to Santa Cruz, here's the political savvy you should expect:

5, 6, and 7 wins the weekend. I'm not sure if it was a planned schtick, or if we get to see a written record of a guy's thought process unfolding, but it's great stuff either way.

Does Lat always use the royal "We" when referencing himself or was there more than one person from ATL at the conference?

5-7: There is a simple solution to the "problem" of leakers. Just be honest and tell the outside world what you tell insiders. The article says:

"[E]mployers can no longer expect to release information internally a few days before making a public announcement. Rather, he says the same message should be communicated internally and externally simultaneously."

ATL is trying to expand itself to be a website that lawyers actually respect ...

Drop your liberal management and you might have a chance. Until then, you'll be nothing but a rag where people go to talk shit.

Sitting on a panel or eight doesn't mean shit. ATL is nothing more than huff po for bored lawyers.

20 - "nothing but a rag where people go to talk shit."

Isn't that why people read ATL? Otherwise we can go to WSJ or Am Law (zzzz).

I was at the panel. Great discussion. There was definite tension between Lat and Nina T.

20 - In general I agree with you. ATL is becoming more mainstream but still has a way to go.

That said, it is legitimating to be invited to address several hundred federal judges.

From Link #1:

"Under questioning from Totenberg, Lat confirmed that he made six figures and said his online operation was breaking even, 'not bad' for three years of operation."
