Victory for Fish & Richardson in ATL’s Summer Associate Event Contest (and the Mark Cuban Insider Trading Case)
The Dallas office of Fish & Richardson has won the contest for best summer associate event of 2009, capturing almost two-thirds of the 1757 votes in the runoff with the Carlton Fields fishing trip.
Fish & Richardson’s winning event was called “Harpdygal IV.” It is part of a series of “Biglaw counter-culture” events started four summers ago by associate Kip Mendrygal and partner Geoff Harper.
Back when summer associates were indulged, pampered, and treated to incredibly lavish lunches, dinners, and golf outings, Harper and Mendrygal wanted to offer something offbeat. So they took summers to WWE Friday Night SmackDown, a Professional Bull Riders event, and a demolition derby. This year, Harpdrygal was an outing to an all-female roller derby.
We congratulate Fish & Richardson for being crowned winner of the Best Summer Associate Event of 2009 (and for the firm’s recent legal victory, alongside Dewey & LeBoeuf, in Mark Cuban’s insider trading case).
Harper and Mendrygal sent us their acceptance speech via email. Here’s an excerpt:
[A]s for winning the ATL vote, Kip and I can truly say that this is the single greatest honor we have ever received for anything we’ve ever done. Ever. And, not to brag, but I’m pretty sure we’re going to get another $50 added to our budget, which will allow us to invite another 8 people to Harpdrygal V next year. It’s funny (actually sad) to us that, when we started Harpdrygal four years ago, our shtick was to be a low-brow gag event buried in the middle of fancy dinners, wine tastings, and sports suites. Now, with financial Armageddon approaching (here?), our events are substantially less shocking.
Read the message in its entirety, after the jump.
A MESSAGE FROM HARPDRYGAL FOUNDERS, GEOFF HARPER AND KIP MENDRYGAL
First: If you want a bit more detail on the event, here is part of an email we sent out internally to describe this year’s event to non-attendees:
When we pulled up at Dad’s Broadway Skateland in beautiful Mesquite, Texas, the attendees were thrilled(?) to see that Harpdrygal IV was …full contact roller derby. That’s right, we loaded up the group and took them to an “Assassination City Roller Derby” match where we were treated to two flat-track, full-contact matches. First, we saw the visiting River Valley Roller Girls narrowly defeat the Lone Star Assassins behind the high-octane scoring of “Smack the Ripper” and punishing hits delivered by blockers “Trigger Mortis” and “Juana Hit.” Then, in the nightcap, the always lethal Deadly Kennedys (lead by “Illegally Blonde” and “Brandi Danger”) crushed the Bombshell Brigade despite a great effort by their lead blocker “Nebrass Kick’r.” For those who have never been, this is a real sport with real rules played by real athletes who hit and get hit. See sample bio here: http://acderby.com/cms/content/view/25/53/. It was a blast—if you haven’t been, you need to go. But be advised that you might see someone you know—one of the girls claimed to be a paralegal at a prominent Dallas firm.
[As a side note, Kip believes that these girls’ parents unfairly disadvantaged them by bestowing these unfortunate names at birth. If your birth name is “Ivana Krushya,” “Pyro Maim Ya,” or “Massey Graves,” do you have any real chance to be a dentist? Mr. and Mrs. Krushya pre-destined their daughter for roller derby.]…

Second, as for winning the ATL vote, Kip and I can truly say that this is the single greatest honor we have ever received for anything we’ve ever done.
Anyway, planning is already underway for Harpdrygal V, which will propel us to new lows. Though Harpdrygal I-V have covered many of the things that make Texas awesome, dozens of Texas-specific activities remain, including cow tipping, water witching, beef jerky making, animal husbandry, and donning masks and chainsaws and chasing teenage tourists through the woods. If this sounds like your kind of good time, come on down for a visit before Texas follows through on its threats to secede from the United States.

1 - Yes. Congrats!
Some high number.
And are you insane, Elie? Do you read anything. Dewey & LeBoeuf represented Cuban in the SEC case. You realize you're supposed to be some kind of journalist, right? Perez Hilton checks his facts better.
Here's AmLaw's report of Dewey's victory: http://www.law.com/jsp/tal/digestTAL.jsp?id=1202432359938
Here's the New York Times': http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/18/business/18Insider.html
Here's the WSJ Law Blog's: http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2009/07/17/secs-insider-trading-suit-against-mark-cuban-is-dismissed/
Man, this blog has gone downhill.
Yeah, I thought Dewey represented Cuban.
#2 - Fuck you. I hope someone shits in your mouth.
Thoughts that come to mind:
1) I looked them up, Geoffrey and Kip are very ATTRACTIVE men.
2) Beyond their looks, this letter seems to evidence their cool personalities. Major points.
3) This event seems really cool. I think more firms should offer events like this. Copying is the most sincere form of flattery.
-3L who should be studying for the bar
p.s., what are we supposed to call ourselves now? Incoming associate sounds lame. Almost as lame as Bar Studier. WHAT AM I?
(yes i gave you all a perfect set up...consider it my xmas gift to you)
Are you the same Dewey trolls who got all huffy when ATL mentioned Weil as primary counsel in the GM bankruptcy?
Fish & Richardson was on the Cuban case too. See Reuters:
http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/idUSN1747638720090717
If that's not good enough for you, go to PACER. Paul Coggins of Fish & Richardson is designated as lead counsel:

No misappropriation liability but what about "fraud on the market"?
Shame on you, NYTimes, WSJ and AmLaw. Shame!
In my experience, Dewey lawyers have a huge chip on their shoulder.
This is why they get so upset when another firm is credited for a matter they worked on (even when the other firm, like Weil in the GM bankruptcy, did all the heavy lifting).
This is not hard to understand. Fish and Dewey were co-counsel in the Cuban case.
Therefore, it is still okay for Kash - this is a Kash post, #3, not an Elie post (you need to work on your own reading comprehension) - to congratulate Fish on its victory.
You gotta love 'em summers. Love the posts.
I think Fish was just local counsel. Dewey probably did all the work in the Cuban case.
Elie's the editor. All blame for him. (And it's not any fun to blame Kash.) Boo, Elie. Boo.
The problem with ATL now is that Lat thinks all the readers just need time to get used to Elie, or that people just want the posts to be written like Lat used to write them. Because that's what happened when Lat took over at Wonkette. But it's not the case. Elie is just incompetent.
And yeah, it looks like Fish was local counsel, which means that all they probably did was turn in the filings to the clerk's office. If Dewey did the oral argument, it was their case.
Refreshing to see a partner and likely future partner with a sense of humor and being seemingly down to earth.
10 - If there is a firm that doesn't have a chip on its shoulder, I would love to know about it. You basically defined the entire legal community.
Speaking of which, if anyone from my high school is reading this, I make more money than you.
14 = Kash
17, LOL!!
6 - my thoughts exactly.
- Fellow procrastinating 3L bar studier.
FISH REMAINS
Dewey attorneys just love gaping Massholes.
the fact that fish is even having a summer associate program this year after revoking incoming associate offers is just shameful. goes to show that they clearly have no business sense.
isn't Duke another word for shit?
damn you DLJ!
Dewey = joke
All I know is that the massholes of Boston chicks produce copious amounts of dooooooooook on the chests of innocent bystanders.
24 = fart
WOW. They REVOKED incoming associates' offers the DAY AFTER GRADUATION. Maybe (now, stay with me here), rather than increasing the summer budget, they could AT THE VERY LEAST give the cold-offered kids a FULL YEAR stipend.
Disgusting.
Re summer events - who cares? Especially in this economy.
An unrelated note to ATL - I know you are paid by your sponsors, but it is lame to not allow comments on sponsored articles - are your sponsors scared? it's a real sign of weakness and having something to hide. I can't believe you removed the comments on the AXA-related article - why? Did the sponsor not like the comments that point out AXA reps are annoying and their products are no good?
WHO CARES WHO CARES WHO CARES WHO CARES WHO CARES WHO CARES... STOP FUCKING HAVING RUN-OFFS WHEN NOBODY FUCKING CARES IN THE FIRST PLACE YOU SON OF A MOTHERLESS GOAT
I know a lot of summers at other firms who have had much cooler and interesting events. Yawn.
Fish Haters = TTT
31 - just let us know where you live and we can talk about this in person...there are lots of us...we have lots of friends...
My offer was rescinded on the actual day of graduation. Yup, I was at lunch celebrating with my parents, brothers and sisters, and grandparents when the call came in.
Classy place.
I would like to offer a personal thank you to the two douchebag-partners who interviewed me and told me that Fish is the place to be if you are committed to IP.
Count me in. I also hate the Fish partners.
I cant believe a firm that did the shadiest thing to incoming associates even has a summer program, let alone won the best summer associate event . . . shameful
Rotten Fish stink.
the Dead Kennedys rule. that is all.
Fish did the oral argument for Cuban. Their Dallas office is hot. They just (Friday) won a $175 million jury verdict in a contingency case.
Fish was not local counsel, Cuban is Fish's client. Fish brought in Dewey to help.
What's great about this is that there is no mention in the article of the fact that Fish had a meeting with all of their summers on day one of their summer program that most of them, if not all, will not be receiving offers of employment.
40 = Creative
wow. if that's true, 40, Fish is deplorable. scum. at the very least they should offer those they've deferred some kind of priority in hiring! how can you offer jobs to people, tell them you can't afford them because of the economy, and then hire other people?!!!! SLIME.
32 = TTT
42-- I can understand why Fish rescinded your offer. You can't read.
