Blind Item Follow-Up: A Revised List of Suspects

pink slip layoff notice Above the Law blog.jpgWe’ve provided extensive coverage of a recent Biglaw blind item, concerning an unidentified law firm in Manhattan planning multiple rounds of layoffs for later this year. If you’re tired of this little parlor game, then stop reading here.

But if you enjoy rampant speculation, surf over to Law Shucks, which has crunched the numbers again and generated a new list of likely layoff lairs. Some of the commenters on our last thread may be gratified to see their nominees on the updated list.

At this point, the law firm mentioned in the original Washington Post article should have the decency to come forward and ‘fess up. Is it fair to let your fellow firms sit under a cloud of suspicion?

No, Lat, the question is whether it is fair for a blog to throw out several possibilities so that the firms are forced into a corner.

Should we believe/discount a law firm that denies this charge? I believe these very law firms have made similar pledges in the past -- to no avail.

hopefully this will make a firm delay layoffs a few months to avoid the ATL notoriety of being "the one" - we all know how insecure partners at big firms are these days

Why would any firm care about being "fair" to another law firm?

It simply does not happen.

Kirkland has had two rounds of layoffs this year? No. It hasn't had any.

Latham just laid off half the summers at Paul Hastings. Latham has no one left to layoff so they've moved on to laying people off at other firms.

This is the fourth time i am posting this same comment. Two of the others were taken down. Let's see how long this one stays up.

I'm surprised so many people believe what they read in the newspaper. I'm Kate Wendleton, President, The Five O'Clock Club, the outplacement firm they wrote about.

Sorry to ruin the fun of speculating, but -- being the president -- I know that the author was using artistic license to make the article more dramatic.

There IS no law firm we're working with that is planning those kinds of layoffs. What's more, we don’t have a “tally of destruction,” don’t pay monthly bonuses, have a larger office than he described, are not across from a laundry room where people come and go in their pajamas, Kim does not pop Tylenol -- ever -- and it's all meant to add drama to the article.

The technique obviously worked and I am sorry you were misled. We were upset at first, but then realized that this is what sells newspapers. That's show biz.

Warmest Regards,
Kate Wendleton
President
The Five O'Clock Club

Proskauer Rose apparently is deferring LAST YEAR'S Summers an additional year. I hear they will no longer start in March, they have been deferred again until November 2010. WOW.

My vote is Proskauer all the way. What haven't they done to let their employees and the legal market down???????

One of the tasks that prohibits new entrepreneurs from starting new businesses is securing reliable wholesale suppliers.

Mmmm, it wouldn't shock me if Akin was planning another round (though I'd expect it to be pretty small), but they really aren't a "Manhattan firm". I doubt if they're the caller in the article (again, that's not to say I'd be suprised if they, or, hell, any firm, made layoffs).
