Career Alternatives for Attorneys: Band Manager
If you’re leaving Biglaw and moving to New England to innkeep is not your thing, maybe you should consider moving to Los Angeles to promote music.
The American Lawyer has an interesting piece on a laid-off first-year associate, Brandon Dorsky. He was among the batch of Pillsbury Winthrop associates whose departures were inadvertently leaked by a garrulous partner on the train from D.C. to New York.
Dorsky was doing IP work in Pillsbury’s Los Angeles office. The Ohio native had moved to California with the intent to get into the entertainment industry and so he seized the opportunity provided by being laid off:
After leaving Pillsbury, Dorsky decided to build a practice geared to entertainment clients, while also managing musical acts. He e-mailed friends and business contacts looking for leads. Just three days after leaving the firm, he landed his first client, TRG Sports and Entertainment. A friend from the University of Michigan recommended him to the management company, which was looking for a lawyer to draft a recording contract….“I’m out most nights,” Dorsky says. “I see five concerts a week. I’m out there looking for new clients and looking for opportunities for existing clients.”
Dorsky’s tale might provide inspiration for other laid-off first years. In addition to working with bands, he’s drafting recording contracts and doing trademark work. Read more about the secret to Dorsky’s success and the importance of being a “hustler” at the American Lawyer.

Rock'n First!
Did TRG keep him on the phone for 5 hours before finally forcing him to scream "SHOW ME THE MONEY!"??
Oh boy, another pork-pie hat wearing hipster cum lawyer. I don't know which is worse!
ATL blogger. Fame, fortune, tons of respect and lots of friends.
oh wait, never mind.
Notice that there is no discussion in the article about him receiving any payment from his clients....
There almost as many aspiring "Entertaimment Lawyers" in LA as there are aspiring actors.
Good luck, you will need it!
5 - I don't generally discuss collecting from clients either. So what?
3 - I bet he grows a jive-patch too.
Now all the bitter lawyers who hate their jobs will come out to bash a guy who is pursuing something he is passionate about.
I hope I can change your mind about being a band promoter and have you take a look at White House Counsel: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124935604510503669.html

He was a Michigan undergrad. Wonder if Pillsbury fired him because they thought he was a sandwich stealer.
Do you think I can be a band-manager? I'm from top 10 LS, and am in 50th percentile of class. Any advice is appreciated.
Nervous 1L
I would never EVER let a first year draft a recording contract. That's just nuts.
13,
When does it become o.k. for a lawyer to draft a contract? After 2 years? A lot of contract drafting is just looking at old contracts. How many years does an attorney need to look at old contracts before he can write one?
Am I gay, or just an entertainment attorney?
Life's great mysteries:
1. Machu Picchu;
2. Why is there always one fat bridesmaid; and
3. How to become an LA entertainment lawyer.
16,
1. It's on a hill in Peru
2. To make the bride stand out
3. Who you know
13,
Are you an artist who needs representation?
I wonder what Kash is like. Sigh.

I have some gratuitous career tips for Mr. Dorksy. Right now, Mr. Dorksy comes off as an amateur dork. He won't attract legitmate clients until he raises enough capital to "appear" like an entertainment lawyer/manager. I hope that is not a picture of Mr. Dorksy. If it is, he comes off as an androgynous fag hag that has no fashion sense. What company would want to hire such a walking social and fashion faux pas. Mr. Dorksy, you can learn something from the protagonist in the modern day urban rags to riches story that was brought to life in the big screen in "Hustle and Flow." There is shortage of entertainers in the Hunts Point section in New York. Perhaps you can utilize the females in your family to fulfill the demand at Hunts Point and in the process have them raise enough capital for you so that you can buy yourself some decent clothes, frames and a half day treatment at the barber to get rid of that hideous haircut and facial hair. Learn how to hustle Mr. Dorksy. That is my advice. You are welcome.
damn it how did it take this long for someone to bag on that photo? how hokey can you get?
Unfortunately most of us can't quit our jobs and be wannabe entertainment lawyers because we don't have rich families to support us (like Mr. Dorsky) while we aren't making any real money.
23 hit the nail on the head.
I recently spent a long weekend in LA visiting a friend. We went out with some friends of his who were "screenwriters", "agents" and "working in entertainment."
When I commented on their nice partments and brand new BMWs, it was only then that my friend told me that they were basically rich white guys living on trust funds. They always bullshitted at parties and dinners about their latest project or their script being "picked up by a network" but never seemed to do any work.
LA is full of these trust fund bullshitters.
Most of these "I jacked in my coporate Biglaw gig to follow my dream" stories are by people who have susbtantial parental financial backing.
Sincerely,
Horatio Alger
23 & 24
I know this D-bag and you couldn't be more right.
I have it on good information that he doesn't know how to play guitar. This makes the AmLaw photo possibly the douchiest photo taken... ever.
Everyone in my class who was laid-off started an "entertainment" career in L.A. while living off Mommy and Daddy.
It's no big deal.
Why would a paying client hire this guy when they could get Jones Day?
Now that it has been confirmed that this photo is in fact of Mr. Dorksy, I have an additional tip for him. Mr. Dorksy, riffing on video game guitar (e.g., Guitar Hero genre) and having your picture taken while doing so neither qualifies you as an artist nor an entertainment attorney. It does, however, qualify you to you be the most pretentious cretin on this planet.
He did attend the University of Spoiled Children, which always seems to outplace associates in Biglaw than UCLA.
28- why would you get jones day when you could get ziffren brittenham? or even manatt... we dont all have trust funds.
23/24- yes, LA is full of trust fund babies trying to make it in entertainment. I REALLY wish the east coast would stop sending them here. If you guys could all keep them wherever you breed them, it would greatly appreciated.
This photo of Mr. Dorsky is the look of someone who just got his mediocre first year grades at Brooklyn law School and the light bulb just went on.....
paying $132,000 to BLS for three years tuition was a BAD INVESTMENT.
"Dorsky" is a truly awful name. Just awful.
What's sad is not that this man has no substantial career and probably never will. It's the fact that this is his feeble attempt to be "cool" because at all other points in his life he was too busy receiving wedgies to even make an attempt at as much. Pathetic.
i would also like to add, that if his day indeed begins booking shows for his bands, as a lawyer or manager, he's breaking the law in California. probably shouldnt have put that in writing, slick.
$20 says this guy does drugs to feel better about himself.
Boy, all this ragging and talkin' sh*t. I am not in my 20's, but remember them well. Young is young and the time to dream, risk and take a shot. The music industry is certainly in flux and, it seems to me, a perfectly good time to be in the mix. Are any of the other commenters doing anything better?
37,
Normally a valid point but here there is no "risk" because the family is backing him financially.
To me it is sad that we glorify people like Mr. Dorsky while ignoring law grads who turned down BigLaw offers, work for beans in non-profits, while truly not being able to afford it. That's daring to dream to me, as opposed to attention whoring, spending Mommy's money on new fedoras and hanging out with shitty bands.
35 - can you not be both a manager/lawyer and a licensed booking agent in CA?
Good for this guy. At least he got the guts to do something he likes. How many of the corporate law drones would have tried something like that with the 3-month severance package?
Wow 38 - I didn't realize that the only "dream" you are allowed to have is the dream of working for a non-profit.
If this guy makes it more power to him, if not what has he really lost besides some time. He worked in biglaw for a bit and probably saved some money and got 3 months severence. I don't know about you guys but I'm pretty sure a single guy in his 20's can make that last a while.
You're allowed to have any dream you want, but don't expect people to applaud it when it's being bankrolled by mommy and daddy. That isn't an accomplishment.
35: cite some actual law if your going to make such pronouncements
Are those specks of white powder that I see on Mr. Dorsky's nostrils? And why does he have his mouth open? Is he waiting for the dude standing next to him to insert something in his mouth? Pink cigar perhaps?
"I'm out most nights," Dorsky says. "I see five concerts a week."
....and I've still yet to see a paycheck.
Sounds glamorous.
I was a classmate of Brandon's at USC. He is a great guy, always friendly, and very passionate about music and hosts great superbowl parties.
Best of luck Dorsky.
Hate to say it, but this guy really doesn't have a clue about landing PAYING entertainment clients. Then again, his (unsigned) clients don't really have a clue about hiring an attorney. While it's all well and good that your attorney comes to your gig to see you play, that's not why you hired him. You hired him to represent your interests with record labels and other companies who have the MONEY you hope to earn. If your lawyer doesn't have the spit-and-polish necessary to deal with those types of folks as an equal, then you need to hire a different lawyer. Then again, if you're not paying him very much, you probably don't care very much about your career.
46,
I was graduated from USC law as well--
saw an alum at a club on Sunset--entertainment lawyer and/or manager. Moi just a bon vivant with a conspicuous consumption of leisure time and partying.
He had his own place in Malibu
during those halcyon days--so doubt he was in it, or needed-the money.
Partner dipshit --your ignorance is overwhelming, to wit, a fag hag is a woman who hangs out with gays.
Also gratuitous is unwarranted not to be confused with gratis. Now if you are ever in LA my Cab needs waxing.
43 -
if youd like to know why managers procuring entertainment employment in CA (aside from a record contract) is illegal, check out this link for a decent synopsis:
http://www.agentassociation.com/frontdoor/news_detail.cfm?id=306
or if you just want the statute its Cal. Lab. Code section 1700 through 1700.46
there is a more recent case (the name of which i cant remember) which has said the portions of the contract in violation are now severable, and it doesnt make the entire Contract invalid, but still... not a good idea, especially when you have it now written in an article, and the SOL only runs once they sue you (thanks park v. deftones).
My brother has a loft across the street from that club--funny that I am an SC alum as well. Its on 8th and broadway--very cool scene.
I always get in free without knowing the password--yes the door guy is intimidating to the uncool.
Query: isn't private practice with de minimus legal experience negligence per se?
I guess you just go to the downtown law libray and use the form books but certainly a trap for the unwary.
Yet if he does get that far--he will find no shortage of experienced erstwhile big law k attorneys to do the review.
41 -
That is my point exactly... he won't lose anything except time. There is no risk when there are no serious consequences of failing. I would rather see stories about and praise people who have taken risks -- usually financial risks -- by, FOR EXAMPLE, working for peanuts for a cause they care about, for the sole reason that they care about it, and not because it is a hobby they can pursue while not having to worry about rent.
48--
Is English your first language?
Fucla law sucks--SC 1st years had 8th highest
starting salary among law schools, antecedent to that ever-so-slight-hiccup
in the legal market.
This guy looks too much like Adam Sandler for my comfort--
Yeah, what 52 said. I read 48's post about four times before I just threw my hands up. Holy cow, what the heck was that? I'm pretty sure that wasn't even written in English.
Just a tip to the haters:
Brandon's already landed paying clients. He is well on his way to becoming ten times more successful, on his own terms, than most of those who criticize him. Right now, Brandon is builiding his business while you're reading about him and not reviewing documents - like the rest of us. Sucks to be you.
Fellow USC Law alum in BigLaw
49 almost answers the question as to why it would be illegal to act as a booking agent: i.e., there exists a licensing requirement. My question remains, how do we know he's not licensed? Can a lawyer really not be a licensed agent?
-39
I don't really care if this guy is or becomes 10 times more successful than I ever do. At least my little life "vignette" isn't up on ATL complete with the most unfortunate picture ever. Did he actually provide that pic himself?
its theoretically possible for you to be a manager and a licensed agent, you just never see it.
you generally see the conflict come in between managers and agents, because mangers can take whatever % they want, whereas agents are limited generally to 10%. lawyers generally take about 5% so you see the conflict less often, just becuase of money. managers acting as agents is usually the big issue, becuase theres alot of room to take advantage of the artist if youre acting as a manager and an agent.
but the bottom line, and what youre getting at is sure, you can be a lawyer, manage some bands, lawyer some bands, and be a licensed agent for others. I think there are ethical rules in CA that have bearing on when you can be someones lawyer and represent them as a different entity in other areas as well, but i cant think of those off the top of my head
really though, ive never seen it. being a licensed agent is expensive (which is why you try and work for a big agency), and youre limited to 10%. being a manager, taking your 20-30% and getting gigs on the side is much easier, albeit illegal.
the bottom line is that it happens all the time, every manager ever in the history of managing has gotten his artists shows at some point. its the nature of the beast. He's not bad for doing it. The agencies just have a ridiculous lobby and want to make sure they have a corner on the market of employment procurement, otherwise, why in gods name would you sign with one?
if he's a licensed agent, more power too him, but i doubt it, and i still wouldnt be happy about that little bit of info in there.
- 35/49
52, 54 used some foreign words that
even the unshorn should know.
I will dumb it up next time--just for you!
54 loved the Midwestern homily "holy cow"--
how quaintishly droll.
Thanks 58 - figured it had to be something practical like that, but I don't practice that kind of law, and sleeping through an entertainment law class 10 years ago somehow didn't fill in the gaps.
-39
Good for Brandon! He is a creative and talented individual who will be very successful in his career.
To all the haters: Would you mind commenting about your unfortuante lives on the FML site for my amusement?
- SC Law Alum
Hey he probably meets real stars--has
a good gig.
You people in fly-over country or
miserable East Coasters can only dream of the chill-life.
Love it when friends do big law in NYC--
first questions are why did you leave Cali--are you nut?
And then they wax poetically about the bigger deals in NY--but guess what they later admit it sucks.
Oh God the Bel Air Hotel is going to be closed for 2 years--wtf--I love that place?
Another SC Toff
Name change stat:
sodomsky?
Trophy husband secure--Bora Bora anyone
I went to Michigan with him. Great dude. Very smart, while not having to shove it in your face. A rare breed. Now that I am also a lawyer I can say that he will definetely make it in this world. Let the dude live. Or think about it like this...he's one less genius (and he is quite smart) to compete with in the marketplace.
- Biglaw associate soon to be the fuck out
Dear haters,
I happen to know Mr. Dorsky and know that he has already been paid by his clients and is well on his way to making it. I also know that he doesn't "book" the acts for his bands - his artists do it - he just advises them on it.
Brandon loves music and he seems genuinely excited to be doing what he is doing. He isn't making 6 figures a year and he isn't being supported by a trust fund - but he is happy and he is enjoying himself.
In the end, I'm pretty sure that is all that matters.
Fellow USC alumni
I can't believe the absolute hating you guys are doing on this guy. He's obviously a smart, charismatic guy who was dealt a bad hand and is now using that as an opportunity to do something he loves. He's probably working on his own schedule, maybe not making a ton of money (yet), but loving life. How do you biglaw types feel about that when you're at the office again past 10 pm?
It's cute how many classmates he got to come to his rescue in the ATL comments. You guys are good friends.
Friends? Maybe he's actually a charismatic and smart guy who is trying to make the best of himself.
I actually do reporting for a living and I contacted the guy and he wrote me back within 24 hours. He answered all my questions and even sent me a picture. I was surprised by his candidness and honesty. A publication I work for is picking up his story. You can reach him on his website - www.supergoodmusic.com.
Sounds like this guy might actually know what he is doing.
Went to high school with him. The dudes awesome. He actually won best dressed in high school - so comment 21 (Partner Emeritus) - go back to your "in the closet" self-loathing existence.
.
Went to high school with him too. Not saying he is awesome - but he was into music, worked at a used-record store, was really into hip-hop music for a white guy and bumped his woofers hardcore on the oval.
I saw the guy freestyle over "Humpty Dance" doing karaoke.
68 - what publication? And does he wear faggy fedoras in all his pictures?
Also went to high school with Dorsky, but am older. Was in the same class as his sister Niki Dorsky. He made mixtapes with this guy Robert Klimek. They called them Ghetto Mix - and they were awesome.
Ghetto Mix 10 is classic!
Shaker Heights just got wind of this article - apparently 3 days late. Shows you how fast publicity gets to Ohio!
SHHS alumn here. The high school produces talent. He went to high school with Kid Cudi (Scott Mescudi), one of the biggest rappers out right now. Brandon's talented too - just not as a rapper.
Also Shaker Heights - Brandon took all AP classes in high school, finished college in less than 4 years and got his JD at a top 20 law school. The guy got laid off and turned it around into something he loves. Go Brandon!
Knew him. Blew him. Love him still ;)
He co-executive produced LAST CUP: ROAD TO THE WORLD SERIES OF BEER PONG. Check IMDB.
"Now, I don't know, not having been there and not seeing all the facts, what role race played in that. But I think it's fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two, that the FBI agents acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home using their own freezer; and, number three, what I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there's a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately. That's just a fact."
-- Barack Obama
Go Blue! Brandon worked at The Bling Pig and sold me tickets to all the best concerts. He had an ear for talent then and I'm sure he hasn't lost it. The guy knows good music.
His sister is a lawyer in cleveland - Nicole Schaefer -
http://www.beneschlaw.com/professionals/xprProfessionalDetailBFCA.aspx?xpST=ProfessionalDetail&professional=841
She was top 25 under 35 in Cleveland. Maybe the parents just raised smart kids.
Who are you 81? Who calls her Nicole? It's Niki.
Was visiting LA a few weeks back and went to a house party that he threw at the set-decorator of Entourage's house. He throws good parties.
Has he done anything for any of his artists? Does he make any money? Who cares how good of a guy he is?
Have not seen or spoken to him in years. He was smart and charming in high school. He is doing better than all of his friends are doing, even if he did get laid off. If I had to bet on him succeeding or failing - I'd put my money on success.
He got a job offer at a firm in Cleveland and didn't take it....probably because it was a job offer at his sister's firm.
Or because it was a job offer in Cleveland?
Brandon does legal work for bands I like, The French Semester - www.myspace.com/thefrenchsemester and The Volunteers - www.myspace.com/thevolunteers
That picture is funny.
Met Brandon on Jam Cruise 07 - really cool dude. Hope he is going again this year - its gonna be sick!
He was giving out free CDs at Bonnaroo. He turned me on to this great jam band - The Last Ambassadors - www.myspace.com/thelastambassadors
Dorsky is the man. He is also a good skier.
He threw a 3 day bender at the Entourage house after he took the bar exam last year in California. He hired a band, he had multiple kegs, he cooked meals for everyone....the guy knows how to throw a party.
Dorsky fell off stage after his speech for class president in high school. Funniest. Moment. Ever.
Why do people like this guy?
I volunteered with Brandon in SGORR (Student Group on Race Relations). He always went above and beyond what people asked him to do. He was a really good guy and a hard worker. I have confidence he will succeed.
An attorney who throws good parties? Does he make you sign a waiver before entering?
94 - so true. LMFAO. It was #2 most memorable moment, behind the electricity going out and getting out of school!
He does legal work for my friends hat company, Grassroots California. I asked the CEO of the company if he thought the guy was a good lawyer and he says the man does everything well. Apparently he just locked up a contract for the hat company to be the exclusive hat designer for High Times Cannabis Cup.
His blog is good -
www.supergoodmusic.com
http://theconcertjunkie.blogspot.com/
Dorsky - If you read this, I still listen to Rowdy Mix when I work out. How do I contact you?
I want a new mix too Dorsky. Contact me at inliner311@yahoo.com .
http://www.supergoodmusic.com/
Brandon Dorsky's website. Contact him through there 101 and 102.
I went to his bar mitzvah and he had break dancers. He has loved music since I can remember.
Went to Michigan with Brandon. He booked good shows at The Blind Pig and made good electronic music on his drum machine.
Midwest Product played his birthday party in 2003. It was the best party I ever went to in Ann Arbor.
Brandon Dorsky is an all-star. His beer pong documentary, Last Cup, is hilarious and really good. The bands he works with are great too.
Does this guy have a publicist? Geez. Quit riding this guys jock.
I know Dorsky from law school. He always did his own thing, but was really friendly and always happy. Sounds like he is making the best out of things...and thank goodness he got out of the sinking ship that is Pillsbury.
Brandon did my band's publishing deal and got us 4x as much money as we were initially offered! He is good at what he does. Rock on Brandon!
Just talked about this over lunch. The comments were way better on tuesday. Can we please get back to the haterade - it is so much more fun.
How can you hire a guy with a picture like that anyway?
He leaves, breathes, eats and defecates music.
Brandon rules and his mix CDs are spectacular. Supafresh Vol. 1 and 2 have been my go to mixes all summer.
Cool at Michigan. Cooler at USC. He'll be famous by this time next year and all you haters will be eating your words.
Went to USC Law with Boom D. He always made sure he could fit Coachella into his finals schedule. He opted to do a much longer paper in his last semester as opposed to take a simple exam just so he could go see Prince in 2008.
Investigative internet journalism - http://law.usc.edu/students/sconnect/article.cfm?newsID=146
He channels Bone Thugs N Harmony when referencing Cleveland - this guy is hilarious. How do I meet him?
He looks a lot cooler in this picture than the one ATL chose - http://www.zimbio.com/pictures/R572iJE50Yd/2008+CineVegas+Film+Festival+Day+3/C0oU-jgD4bJ/Brandon+Dorsky
Who is that really hot guy with his tounge sticking out in the background?

Who is that really hot guy with his tounge sticking out in the background?
Brandon is the coolest lawyer I have ever met. He gave me great advice on my project, free of charge, simply because I was a friend of a friend.
The kid won an award from the LACBA for being an outstanding bankruptcy law student? Who the hell even takes bankruptcy law in school? This guy is either a genius, a dork, a man with a lot of foresight or some combination of the three.
IMDB confirmed - he did actually work on a movie - and the movie sounds cool.
http://us.imdb.com/title/tt1078603/fullcredits
Brandon is a great guy. I can't believe all the nasty comments up top. Are those people attorneys? If yes, that is so unprofessional.
Dorsky is a hustler, you better ask somebody.
Brandon has already found good talent - you ever heard of The Stone Foxes, The French Semester, The Last Ambassadors, The Volunteers, Keith Masters, Mark Foster, Tic Tic Boom!, T R?
If you haven't yet, I am sure you will. He tells me about them all the time. He represents all of them.
As a fellow music lover and Ohio transplant living in LA, I respect Brandon for his work ethic and drive to make it on his own in the industry.
Keith Masters is the bomb!
www.myspace.com/keithmasters
His music is on BBC radio!!!
Does anyone if he collects unemployment? That will show us how much money he is making (or lack there of).
The French Semester are great!!!
I find the responses to this article interesting for several reasons.
The first being that the responses are overwhelmingly negative. I have to wonder what kind of person is reading an article about an accomplished and intelligent young professional who has turned his loss of a job into something motivating and successful and finds it to be so aggravating that they need to write something nasty and childish.
I can think of nothing more uplifting than the story of someone who during tough economic times and immediately after losing his job has reinvented himself and is achieving independent success.
This begs the question: are you so unhappy with your own lack of success and inability to make yourself happy that you get pleasure out of knocking down a clearly happy and motivated individual? I have to wonder why you have the time to write something negative in response to this article if you are so much more successful and qualified than Brandon Dorsky.
Which brings me to my next point: If any of the negative feedback had been even remotely intelligent or raised a compelling argument, I might not have felt compelled to comment or I might have even found some truth in them. But these comments are generally childish, inane and uninspired. This paints the picture of an unhappy and unmotivated individual angered at the very mention of the opposite, so much so that they resort to name-calling and superficial insults.
If your ability as an attorney is so superior than the subject of this article, so much so that you feel qualified to comment on it, shouldn’t you be able to come up with something more intelligent than a crack at his hat, facial hair, or his name?
Brandon Dorsky is a smart man.
Right on Comment 131. You faceless haters probably live in a van down by the river.
Brandon is a smart, good guy who knows how to work hard. Notable: he takes a day off from time to time, appearing as one of Entourage's headiest guest stars.
Went to school with the Dorsk. Not only is he a smart guy with a strong passion for work - he is really funny and always smiled at me in the hallway.
Went to school with the Dorsk. Not only is he a smart guy with a strong passion for music - he is really funny and always smiled at me in the hallway.
Dorsky is a superhero!
Yeah 135 - Dorsky cameo on Entourage was awesome. How'd he swing that?
Is this guy an actor too? What does he do exactly that he is on Entourage, making movies and being an artist manager? It just sounds like this kid is living the dream. I am jealous - I didn't even think any of that was possible as a law student.
Niki Schaefer is hot - how come she looks so good and he doesn't? Was he adopted from ugly babies r us?
Commenter 131 - you are a very eloquent speaker.
Commenter 21 and 140 - you are both douchebags and I bet you're both ugly. I checked out Brandon's picture and I think he has a nice manly look - he kind of reminds me of Jason Schwartzmann.
Boom D , all the hate no doubt comes from miserable biglaw drones regretting every cent they ever spent on law school, just trying to slave their way out of debt so maybe, just maybe, they will have a chance when they are 35-40 to actually do something fulfilling with their lives. Shine on my man.
I grew up with Brandon's parents. They were great, savvy and intelligent people. I'm sure they raised a brilliant young man and I bet he'll be as successful as his parents, if not more so.
Is he single?
Met Brandon at Bonnaroo this year - cool ass dude with the coolest hats ever! When can I get my green grassroots california bear hat man? And when are The Last Ambassadors coming out with a full length?
I'm a client. Brandon does good work for me. I've already referred him to people I know.
The French Semester are playing with Hockey on August 21st at the echo. If this guy is getting them Friday night gigs with nationally touring bands like Hockey - he must be doing something right.
His blog is cool. I read it regularly. He is a great writer. And the CONCERT BLAST is amazing. The most informative piece of LA music news I read. Thanks!
Dor-sky sky sky sky sky, Dor-sky sky god damn! To the windows, to the walls....
We used to sing that at Michigan when he'd walk into a party and Lil Jon was popular. Rock on brotha-man!
Dorsky is like a boss.
What is this - the Brandon Dorsky fan club homepage?
I've never heard of him until this article, it doesn't really say what it is that he is doing and not once mentions him making money. I'd like to see a follow up article in 4 months and see what he is doing then.
My guess is he'll be unemployed or working at some law firm because he couldn't make it on his own.
Dorsky is responsible for turning me on to half of the music that I listen to... he put me onto Chromeo well before they were popular, same with Diplo, Crystal Castles, Cansei De Ser Sexy, Phoenix - everyone. Plus he makes pretty good beats too.
I love The French Semester - please send them back to Spain!
I'd work for Brandon if he could pay me. I've known the guy for a long time and anything he actually puts his hands on becomes successful.
Partied with Brandon at Pretty Lights at Bonnaroo until 4 in the morning. He was rocking the coolest Pretty Lights hat that a client of his designed - and Pretty Lights was wearing the same hat. It was dope. I want one. Brandon - if you read this - it's Mikey from Denver. I lost your business card - but I want that hat!
Went to Coachella in a limo with him - he made an incredible mix CD for the car ride in like 4 minutes. He has impeccable taste in music.
I went to a concert he put together in Santa Monica in early June on a Monday. There were a lot of people there and everybody showed the guy a lot of love. Whether he is a good lawyer or not - he has the schmoozing thing down solid.
He isn't that special. He hasn't done ANYTHING. His movie is not even out yet and who knows if it will ever be released. This guy is a nobody.
He worked with me at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Nicest guy, always fun to be around and a great idea guy on the spot. When there was a bomb threat - he insisted we all go to the casino to kill time.
Worked with Dorsky at Blind Pig. He always brought an entourage with him everywhere. People like the guy and he does have damn good taste in music.
I love that picture. I think it is funny. It manages to say I'm fun, wild and have a good sense of humor , but am also a qualified attorney - without looking to stupid.
Brandon knows good music - I worked with him at Blind Pig and he single-handedly increased their guarantees 4 fold. He is comfortable taking risks, and lucky for him, they usually pay off in his favor.
Like Bo knows baseball, Dorsky knows good music.
Music tastemaker extraordinaire. Someone should hire this guy as A & R.
I see him at Hunnypot's radio show all the time. He is a really likable guy and he always has on the freshest hats.
You've got a brain in your head, you've got feet on your shoes, you can steer yourself any direction you choose....
His high-school yearbook quote - lyrics from a hip-hop song - "Perception is deception, without the facts you keep guessing" - Talib Kweli.
Looks like Brandon hasn't changed one bit. And he looks as good as ever.
The French Semester are really, really, really good. How'd he get connected to them? Why wouldn't they go with a more established manager who could actually get them a record deal?
DOOOOOOOOOR - SKKKKKKKKKYYYYYYYY
Loving your publicity. Keep up the good work. Screw the people who say mean things about you - they are just jealous that you are carving your own path to success.
Can I come work for you Mr. Dorsky? I like music, am in law school and don't want to work in big law.
B-Dizzlet - thanks for shooting the article over - I'm circulating it to all my friends just so I can say "I know that guy - he's gonna be famous."
When does this beer pong film come out?
Great picture Brandon! I mean the guitar one; you look ridiculous in that other picture.
Friends and family to the rescue! Did he send out a mass text saying his feelings were hurt?
If you want to meet this "hustler", he told me he'd be out at echo tonight for Quintron.
#4 - looks like he has the friends and tons of respect thing going for him. Fame and fortune? TBD.
The French Semester rock! Good choice Brandon Dorsky, Esq.
Hear their music here -www.myspace.com/thefrenchsemester
Is this guy the next Bob Lefsetz or something?
164 - Totally agree. Definitely hire Brandon as A & R - his mixes are the absolute shit.
He started working with my friend, Mark Foster, another Cleveland native. Check him out - www.myspace.com/markfostermusic. Mark is great!
Go Dorskys!
The guy is like a walking music encyclopedia for anything released 1991 or later. And, when it comes to hip-hop knowledge, you'd think he was a black man.
Brandon makes the best mix CDs ever. I still have ones I got from him in high school. Rowdy Mix what?!?!?
Don't know Brandon - but I read his twitter feed - which ultimately led me here. He does write a great blog and appears to have exceptional taste in music. Gonna have to agree with those who are giving The French Semester a strong endorsement.
I'm inspired. Great article!
How does he go out so much? He must be making money. Going out isn't cheap in LA.
He writes a good blog. He also is a really positive guy - so those of you who are hating probably aren't slowing him down any.
Sounds like his career is taking off. Shouldn't we just be happy for the guy?
Looks like he is trying to make the most of his overpriced education. Good luck guy.
Brandon just comes from a talented (and attractive) family. His cousin Coco (real name) is a hustler too....and much better looking. She is a graphic designer living in Germany and is the singer in a punk band.

Dorsky is just following his heart and chasing his dream. We should all take notice and admire that he is willing to take such a big risk.
Worked with Brandon at a small music firm in Santa Monica. Good guy.
Brandon Dorsky is allergic to everything but music. Seriously.
He gave me free CDs at Bonnaroo of acts he works with - The Last Ambassadors are the next Phish! www.myspace.com/thelastambassadors
Worked with Brandon at Donaldson & Hart (now Donaldson & Callif) - he was well liked and respected in the office. Best of luck Brandon!
Brandon Dorsky is just another little fish in the big ocean of entertainment lawyers. Who wants to read about this kid anyway? Can't we read about someone more important. It's not like this guy started the next twitter.
Brandon Dorsky needs to be shot for all this support he is getting. This is disgusting.
Brandon Dorsky either has a publicist or should get one. As they say - all publicity is good publicity. Clearly people like they guy, although there are clearly a few who think he is misguided and will be a failure.
Brandon is one of my best friends. He always has good advice, legal and non-legal, and he certainly knows good music.
Keep on keeping on Brandon with your "shameless self promotion" campaign - I forwarded the article to all of my friends.
How does a guy less than one year out of law school get an article about himself in the American Lawyer? Can someone please tell me - because then maybe I could find a job in this crapshoot of a legal market.
Great article Brandon! I remember when you use to sell your mix CDs out of your backpack. Keep that hustle coming.
Can I get one of this guys super mix CDs if they really are that good?
Waiting in my office, waiting for my secretary to leave, with no work to do, but knowing that a partner is going to drop a load of sh*t on me in the next hour or so....this is precisely why people quit BigLaw to do what this kid is doing.
I'm going to be slaving away in the office while this rookie is out at a concert. I wish I had the balls to brave it on my own like him.
Love the blog - http://www.supergoodmusic.com - everyone should read it.
This guy sucks.
Grassroots California hats are the illest! Brandon designed the Jimmy Hat - coming soon.
Grassroots California is taking the world by storm - one hat at a time.
Smart guy from an exceptional family. Everyone could learn a thing or two from the Dorskys.
Brandon Dorsky = The Concert Junkie
Brandon throws amazing parties. Especially Super Bowl parties.
I took several classes with Brandon at USC Law. He was always up on his materials, enthusiastic about learning and seemed to genuinely like law school. I don't think you could derail this guy if you tried - he is just happy go lucky.
I'm about to check out of my biglaw downtown LA office and hit horrendous traffic. What I wouldn't give to wake up and do work from my apartment every day of the week and not have to drive around LA. Even if I make more money than him, my life doesn't seem nearly as fun as his sounds and I probably spend half of that extra money on f'ing gas.
Thanks for forwarding the article Brandon - best of luck to you.
Keep rocking on Brandon....and make extra copies of all those Supafresh Mix CDs. The playlists look great!
Commenter 21 - just a little FYI - Brandon is one of the most heterosexual guys I know. He couldn't be gay even if he wanted to be.
I hope this guy succeeds. Clearly his friends are gunning for him. USC must be a great place to go to law school.
Does anyone else thing he took out an ad on craiglist that offered to pay people to make comments? I mean, come on - how many people have the time to give shout outs on a legal blog?
I listen to all of SUPERGOODMUSIC's artists. The French Semester are my favorite. Good ear Brandon, good ear.
Brandon dressed as MC Hammer for Halloween in 3rd grade. Best. Costume. Ever.
I know the guy. Brandon Dorsky is a diamond in the rough.
Brandon's concert newsletter is my go to resource for things to do in LA. Thank you Brandon.
Big Ohio status! Do your thing B and put Shaker on the map.
218 - you're definitely wrong. He posted on twitter that people were hating on him in the comments section. Look at the website - http://www.supergoodmusic.com - his twitter feed is on there.
Screw biglaw - I want to go see concerts five nights a week! This guy is living the life.
Dream big Brandon cause this is only a dream. A pipe dream.
UGGGGGGGH. Can people please stop riding this guys nuts. It is so vomit inducing.
Reliable sources told me that Mr. Dorsky turned down a one year gig at SAG to pursue this pipe dream. Does anyone else think he is a moron? Or just me?
When life gives you lemons, turn that sh*t to lemonade.
Unfortunately commenter #228, Brandon is not a moron. He already had clients when he interviewed with SAG and SAG was only promising him one year because Pillsbury was going to subsidize his salary. It was 55K to work at SAG for a year with no guarantee of future employment or 3 months severance. What would you do if you already had paying clients? If you say SAG, you're the moron.
Hate, hate, hate, hate, hate from the peanut gallery. You all most be single, desperate, pathetic and miserable attorneys who just wish you had his savvy. Dorsky is my homeboy and I'm glad to see his friends saying such nice things about him. Dorsky - if you're reading this - know that we all support you with what you're doing and we're all hoping you become a millionaire....
You rock my world Brandon, literally. I still listen to the CD of tracks that you produced and I still love it.
224 and 218,
You are both wrong. Brandon has 300 acquaintances who all happened to make a concerted effort to read this ATL story two days after it came out, which I am sure happens all the time, with or without throwing a pity party for yourself on twitter, blogs, facebook, and god knows what else.
Sincerely,
Mr. Benefit Of The Doubt
If you don't like what the article has to say or you think the guy is not smart or shouldn't be taking the risk - you should probably just keep those thoughts to yourself. Brandon Dorsky is a well-liked and respectable stand-up guy.
Brandon and I used to rap together for fun. He is actually not a bad freestyler and he does do an exceptional karaoke rendition of The Humpty Dance by Digital Underground.
Mr. Benefit Of The Doubt - is it really a pity party?
I know Brandon, I like Brandon and I am just trying to show my support. I think that is what everyone else is doing. Making him feel good about taking a risk so that he keeps on trying so that he does ultimately succeed - rather than listen to all these ATL commenters who try and bring him down.
Someone get this guy a stylist - stat.
Congratulations Brandon on a great article. I hope you thanked the writer.
This guy made a movie in law school. How is that even possible?
I met Brandon freshman year at U of M. The guy is always a joy to be around and has some of the best taste for music of anyone I know. Can't wait to party again with him in international waters this Jamuary!
The History Of Ghetto Mix Mixtapes:
http://themostbeautifullestthing.com/?p=223
To quote the Dave Chappelle skit: "hate, hate, hate"
The negative comments are just sad. What Brandon Dorksy is doing doesn't affect you - and he's actually doing what he's passionate about. Pretty simple - that gets respect.
Yeah. Respect.
http://www.myspace.com/keithmasters
Brandon represents him and put me on to his music and I absolutely love "I Love to Floss."
It is amazing how quickly commenters lose sight of the substance of the article. This was about someone getting laid off doing something different - and the real question is - was this a smart decision? I think that is yet to be seen. My guess is he probably wouldn't have a job with a big firm though.
Good article Brandon. I hope it brings you a lot of business. The website looks good too. If I find any bands looking for a manager and/or attorney, I will send them your way.
Brandon is a sweetheart.
The French Semester es una venda maravillosa.
http://www.myspace.com/thefrenchsemester
Tyler Glover of TRG Sports and Entertainment? Do ATL blog commenters even know who that is? That is T R, the hip-hop artist and producer. He has one of the top dance songs in the world right now - "Give Me Tonight." Brandon is obviously doing something right if he can land a client like that.
While there has been an overwhelming amount of positive comments in favor of Mr. Dorsky, none of these comments seem remotely relevant to what was discussed in the article. Who cares if he throws a good party or has good taste in music or makes an "awesome" mix CD? Shouldn't we only care about whether or not he is marching a path to success? Shouldn't commenters be giving the guy some helpful pointers on how to best navigate through the entertainment law community? If he has not already figured it out, he will soon realize that it is all about who you know and not about what you know. For a boy who grew up in Cleveland, OH - I doubt he knows anyone in the entertainment law community.
Maybe he got laid off because all he did to find work was "send out multiple e-mails a week" searching for billable work. Last time I checked - as a first year, you have to show your face to the partners for them to even know you exist.
Maybe he got laid off because he grew up in Ohio and looks like Adam Sandler with a goatee? Or maybe just because he looked like that.
I interned with Brandon at ICM in Summer 2006. He always took the time to explain things in great detail and he made sure I knew where the best music in town was. He was such an interesting guy, I based a character off of him in my script.
Yo quiero The French Semester.
http://www.myspace.com/thefrenchsemester
Why do people care more about this guy then the new justice Sotomayor? Does this guy have his own reality TV show or something?
I just read all the comments and it basically sounds like this guy should be A & R for some sinking record label.
He doesn't even list his clients on his website - but I did sign up for his newsletter at http://www.supergoodmusic.com. We'll see what information this guy really sends out and if it is all these commenters make it out to be.
Love the kid, he's gonna be super successful one day...but yeah, that picture needs to go.
Brandon Dorsky's Band Manager featurette is officially the most commented story on ATL? I'm officially no longer a reader.
What exactly was the secret to Dorsky's success? I read the article because it had so many comments, but I am still not sure.
I wrote him an e-mail through his website and he wrote me back answering all of my questions, giving me links to all of his artists and even sent me some mp3s for free. You can reach him at brandon@supergoodmusic.com. FYI, The French Semester and Mark Foster both sound great!
Go Brandon!
Congratulations! It is a pleasure to learn of you carving your own path BD.
Mrs. Dorsky is a MILF.
Perhaps the title of this article should have been "Well Liked Boy From Cleveland With A Hot Mom and Sister Seeks Obnoxious Amount of Attention"?
People talked about him in high school a lot too and I still don't get it. Shaker Heights is a weird place.
No matter what his friends say - he still looks stupid in that picture.
Good stuff.
www.myspace.com/thelastambassadors
Entertainment law is about the client and not the type of work. People at my firm represent celebs in criminal proceedings, nuisance actions, all kinds of weird stuff. (And yes sometimes even negotiating contracts -- just like Jeremy Piven on Entourage bro!). Right now this guy sounds more like A&R or a promoter, especially from how much people say he likes music. That's cool, but it ain't lawyering.
Brandon is entitled to use whatever pictures he wants. It does not appear that his picture selection has affected his reputation, people's willingness to do business with him or anything else. If you have nothing good to say, my parents always taught me to not say anything.
269,
Where there is ATL, there is shit talking. It's the price of being in the public eye. Deal with it.
270,
So true. I know Brandon, he has thick skin and I'm sure he can handle it. That said, Brandon, that picture is retarded. Please change it.
And, is that Jim Kidston in the background?
Most commented story Brandon! Nice self promotion. Keep up the good work.
Just started following him on twitter. He has a cool website. http://www.supergoodmusic.com
Brandon Dorsky has grade A taste in music. He made all the mixtapes for every SHHS party I can remember going to - and they were always the hotness.
- Former High School Classmate
That is Jim! He's great at Trivial Pursuit.
Dorsky knows more about music than most DJs on the internet or radio. Seriously folks. If I had a record label, I would hire that guy in a second.
http://www.myspace.com/thefrenchsemester - Apparently one of his clients and they are really, really good live.
He changed the picture on his website. Looks like the ATL hate parade really got to him despite his thick skin (271). He is not so bad looking after all.
I signed up for the newsletter and I don't even live in LA. http://www.supergoodmusic.com. Lets see if this guy really does know music. If he doesn't, I am continuing the hate parade on my music blog for him being a poser.
Does anyone have the picture of Brandon as MC Hammer? OR can you get it from his family? At least find a way to post it on the internet? I think he painted himself brown to look like a black person and carried around a boombox playing 'U Can't Touch This.' He actually looked like a black kid - with terrible complexion.
The manager of The Killers was a Skadden associate.
Brandon does great legal work and communicates to his clients well. A lot of referrals are contacting him so it seems like the snowball is just starting to roll...congrats Brandon!!!
I am a client. He does great legal work and charges good rates for his work. He doesn't even nickel and dime for phone calls.
Met him at Quintron last night because I took his concert blast recommendation. GREAT RECOMMENDATION!
The manager of Incubus is an attorney. All you need is one great band.
Why did people comment so much on this story?
Find his blog at http://www.supergoodmusic.com.
It is actually pretty good. His show reviews are pretty colorful.
Just read blog. Not bad, but it makes everything sound like it is good. Is Mr. Dorsky ever critical? At some point he needs to be.
Given the number of comments on this article - maybe ATL should do a follow up on him in say 6 months or a year.
Note that virtually everyone who actually knows Dorsky is happy to vouch for him. I too went to SC with Brandon. He's a great guy and knows music back and forth.
290 hits the nail on the head. Commenters saying bad things about him most likely do not know Brandon. Brandon is an absolute gentlemen and he is really smart. Not to mention that he loves music, throws great parties and knows how to have a good time.
I know Brandon and I know music... if you like music at all, you should be pulling your weight for Brandon because he represents one very legitimate hope to get us back to a golden age of music. In my eyes, all you haters must also hate music. Personally, I know Brandon is awesome, fun and good-hearted; but even if you're blind to the truth, stay true to the music.
I don't know Brandon at all - but I love all of these comments - way better than the average run of the mill comments that are typically in an ATL post.
People are still commenting on this story a whole week later? Get over yourself Mr. Dorsky - one week old blog press is worthless.
I also went to school with Brandon Dorsky and the outpouring of support exemplifies the quality of his character. He is extremely passionate about music and obviously motivated to make something happen. Not many people are brave enough to take the risk - but Brandon is.
Good for him for doing something not boring. However, -2 points for posing in that Amlaw picture with a cheap strat in an awful color that isn't plugged in. It is good that he has a lot of pals showing up to defend him from random ATL trolls--speaks well that people seem to like this guy. Better than most of us can say ;)
Fantastic newsletter!
# 296 - how do you know the strat wasn't vintage?

i ditched managing rock band so I could go to law school. full circle.

The hats are stupid--
poser alert. Oh he's so cool at my Bar mitzvah he rapped
just like black people!
And he had good teeth and shameless self-promoter and ass-kisser like everyone in the biz.
Alert every agent--and I have met some of the very top

Bet he does the jive handshake and hugs people all the time.

#280 - you're saying he dressed in black face?
Commeter 302 - you sound like you are jealous of his good teeth, his ability to promote himself and that you didn't really read the article. Your inability to say anything of value or substance is probably a reflection of your self-image.
The hats are stupid? In what regard? Can you at least make a critical comment that is something more than a stand-alone statement with no substance?
Mr. Dorsky is an excellent attorney. I have already referred him to a friend.
