Nationwide No Offer Watch: Zero Offer Extended At Morgan Lewis D.C.
Ed. Note: This post has been updated (as reflected in the edited title). Please keep reading.
The offer calls for Morgan, Lewis & Bockius went out today, and associates who summered with the firm’s Washington office are receiving some especially difficult news: zero offers.
Update: Morgan Lewis responded with this statement:
Rumors you reported of zero offers in DC are false. We are giving offers in every large office of the firm. Due to the difficulty of predicting 2011 staffing needs, we have today extended only a limited number of offers. To assist those who have not received offers in seeking other opportunities, we will provide a letter to prospective employers that explains the circumstances surrounding our summer program, in the hopes that as these students enter the legal profession, they will be able to obtain employment opportunities commensurate with their qualifications and performance.
The firm refused to elaborate on just how many offers constitute the “limited number of offers” the firm extended. Above the Law has independently confirmed a report of one (1) offer extended at Morgan Lewis in D.C. Is there anybody else? Feel free to email us.
Multiple tipsters from D.C. are reporting phone calls like this one:
They just called. They’re not giving offers this year. They’re re-evaluating next fall for hiring needs for the following year and writing the summers a letter explaining that they were awesome. … [T]he head recruiter honestly sounded like she had been crying … Apparently they’re going to “stay in touch” over the next year to see what’s going on.
According to NALP, Morgan Lewis expected 17 2L summers and 2 1L summers for their 2009 summer program in D.C.
We are still collecting information about Morgan Lewis’s firm-wide offer rate. More details, plus an update from Philadelphia, after the jump.
We understand that the MLB firm wide offer rate will be greater than 0%. So not everybody who summered at MLB wasted their time. According to a tipster, one of the firm’s hiring partners in Philadelphia told summers there that “surprisingly few” offers would be given.
Are summers really that surprised? One of our sources noted that the firm no longer has to worry about its reputation on law school campuses:
I guess when you have already deferred a class, canceled next year’s summer program and are in the process of slashing base salaries, there is not much more to fear as far as PR hits go.
MLB has already taken itself out of the game for the rising 2L class of 2011. Will members of the class of 2012 even remember what has happened here a year from now when they start looking for summer employment?
We’ll keep you posted as we get more information.
Update (6:25): We’re now hearing rumors of four offers for the Philadelphia summer class. Out of 23 summers. For those keeping score at home, we’ve got 1 of 17 in D.C. and 4 of 23 in Philly for a grand total of 5 of 40 overall. One tipster had this complaint:
What was the point of canceling the summer program next year if you are no offering everyone this year??? They cited canceling the summer program as a reason to give more offers.
Morgan Lewis chairman Fran Milone did cite “committing to the people in whom we are already invested” as a reason for canceling the 2010 summer program. But he made that statement in July. Perhaps he was already excluding the 2009 summer associates when he made that remark?
Anybody have any New York numbers? Did anyone at one of MLB’s smaller offices receive an offer?

waaaaah. no offer for you. waaah
Morgan Lewis = EPIC FAIL
"[T]he head recruiter honestly sounded like she had been crying ... "
She is a good actress.
That really sucks. Good luck to everyone.
Stay classy, 2.
2: You sir, are a douche.
And really, not even 1 offer? At least SOME of the summers must have been competent.
This ship be sinking.
"Apparently they're going to "stay in touch" over the next year to see what's going on."
I wouldn't count on it.
This can only mean that Morgan Lewis is in serious trouble.
Oh yeah, 2 is an asshat.
Zero offers? In that case, MLB should have just canceled their 2009 summer program last year so the summers could have worked for some other firm and actually had some chance of getting an offer. That's still the case even if MLB ends up making a handful of offers (say, less than half).
Instead, their summers are going to be thrown into the dead 3L hiring market with a snowball's chance in hell of lining up a starting biglaw gig.
Morgan Lewis should be ashamed of themselves. They are taking every possible measure to keep the partners' pockets padded rather than focus on the future of their firm. They have laid off associates who were busy, now stretching their existing associates to the limits while rewarding them for their hard work by telling them they can expect drastic changes in compensation by the end of the year. Meanwhile, current associates fear additional layoffs. Now they are giving up on future talent for the next two years. It's extremely short-sighted, and for what? So the partners don't have to give up their European holidays and expensive car leases this year? Pathetic.
Percentage of MLB out-of-luck associates now applying for jobs at Dechert = 100
How you like me now?
Elie, is there a private right of action under the Good Samaritan Punish Act of 2009? If so, I'd like to use it against MLB in the coming class action.
Elie, is there a private right of action under the Good Samaritan Punishment Act of 2009? If so, I'd like to use it against MLB in the coming class action.
MLB has been taking some serious measures. It looks like they are trying to do more than just pad the partners' pockets. Start looking for partner departures. If that happens, put MLB on death watch.
MLB is going to have a tremendously difficult time recruiting in the future.
Jesus H. Christ this is well beyond prudent cost-cutting, it's egregiously irresponsible and dishonest. Those summers busted their asses only to have NO chance at a job. UNREAL.
There is a special place in hell for firms like this.
disgusting
Good call, 11.
DOJ SECURE
6, competence is totally irrelevant.
9, they obviously couldn't plan that far ahead.
They won't have any trouble finding able bodies if demand for big law grunt work ever resurfaces.
Just deserts for the no-offerees that voted for Barack Obama.
Good call, 11.
DOJ SECURE
No firm has to worry about PR anymore. That's just a myth law students use to help themselves sleep at night.
The reality is that there are more qualified, heavily-indebted law students in the pipeline than there are 6-figure first-year jobs.
Students aren't going to have the luxury of being picky. They'll take the job from any firm that offers.
It's the end of Morgan Lewis and we know it . . .
7 is right. How many of us who were laid-off were told to "stay in touch"? Yeah, lots of people laid-off at LW, PH, Cadwalader, etc. have been re-hired...
Get ready to start spamming with resumes! It suckssss.
Any word on offer rates in Philadelphia?
How could any future potential summer who has an offer at another firm choose to summer at MLB...With the ramifications that will come from this action it looks like they are throwing a hail mary in order to just survive
Marianna of JDU fame has joined us
ATLfags are done now!
"T]he head recruiter honestly sounded like she had been crying"
Until I can pay back my loans with recruiters tears, I don't give a FUCK.
Ouch. Sounds like MLB is seriously hurting, though a friend in Philly is busy.
Now its time to do my time Chrometa style. Peace out.
The only people who blame no-offers on partners flying in private jets and golfing at Pebble Beach are people who have never worked hard enough to need to fly in a private jet or golf at Pebble Beach. When you labor for long hours at a preeminent peer law firm (as I did this past summer), a private flight and sunny session of golf are required to rejuvenate.
Any word on offer rates for other offices?
PE: STFU jingle man.
MLB = SHAME
Commence the Deathwatch
The head recruiter is the next person out the door.
Has anyone considered that the head recruiter might be crying because she, too, has lost her job? They don't need her to find 2Ls to summer. They don't need her to prepare 3Ls to start in the fall. They don't need her to find lateral associates. Why would they continue employing her and her staff?
16: They won't have trouble recruiting. There will always be a steady stream of law students lining up for their opportunity to throw their lives away at a big law firm, and they won't care a whole lot about which big law firm it is.
Man, I sure am glad I went in-house.
MLB = Next Heller?
Either Morgan Lewis's D.C. partners are a bunch of assholes or they absolutely suck at identifying talent. Don't even get me started on their business planning skills.
0 for 19? Morgan Lewis, Epic FAIL.
wow. WOW. I don't know what to say. other than... yes, you are all F*CKED. I really don't know what is going to happen to all of these law students. they are all F*CKED. and a firm like morgan lewis? putting that kind of talent back on the market? have to be some real smart kids in that group. damn. DAMN... for all of you who didn't get a summer associate position this past summer, get to the back of the line. you will be shunned once again. it's tough man. very tough.
Anyone know about Morgan Lewis NYC?
WTF 28?!?
perhaps morgan lewis is redefining the term "no-offer" to mean their firm gives no offers.
What did you expect from an organization led by Bud Selig?
Call the whaaambulance!
These poor, little "summers" are no longer going to work in Biglaw.
There is always doc review or shitlaw firms to fall back on.
Sounds like MLB is acting prudently. It is irresponsible to hire new associates, only to later lay off existing associates. I rather stake my future at a firm that acts responsibly in the face of market changes that one that plods along pretending that nothing has changed. They have no cause for concern, the market is going to be flooded with hungry attorneys for years to come. Wake up everyone, law firms are going to have to start acting like businesses...which means hiring only what you need when you need it
Hard to believe that the firm isn't in very, very serious financial difficulty. Perhaps they entered a work-out with a creditor, and one of the conditions was that they not hire a single additional employee? Keep a close eye on any partner defections...
Marianna is hot. I've never seen her before on this thing, albeit, I'm new on here. Marianna, do you like lobsters?
Marianna and her one supporter fail. Never heard of her, don't give a shit, and her schtick is seemingly uncreative. Identifying yourself with no discernable reference does not work here you wretched pieces of shit.
I was really surprised to not a get a summer associate offer a Morgan Lewis last fall
when I thought I was a perfect fit. No I'm kinda glad they rejected me.
Marianna and her one supporter fail. Never heard of her, don't give a shit, and her schtick is seemingly uncreative. Identifying yourself with no discernable reference does not work here you wretched pieces of shit.
What was the point for MLB to cancel their summer program for next year, citing to give more offers to the current summer associates as a reason, only to no offer everyone?
Oh my god, here is a new concept get salaries in line with reality and you could hire a few people.....idiots.
Milbank is getting away with murder. They no-offered up to 70% of their 2009 summer class, and not a peep from ATL? Someone needs to get on this -- lots of good people were ruined by that TTT firm.
There is nothing to see here. Move on please.
The no offered summers were given a gift. They were employed for 10 weeks at an outrageous salary. Offer or no offer, they were never starting at the firm. Ever. So giving everyone a no offer is just another gift. Get started looking for a job, now.
Sadly, Morgan Lewis is teetering on the brink. A 30% pay-cut is an invitation to leave. The more that leave the better. The leftovers will cost less. With any kind of luck the cremains might survive until January.
What these moronic firms pay one associate could easily be shared by 2 people.....god forbid. Guess what...the associates will still work just as hard and suck it up because frankly they don't have a choice.
I think you guys are missing the point that it is not only about recruiting, the general image of the firm takes a considerable hit as well when these things happen.
We work in a very competitive profession and the overall quality of a firm is something I take into consideration when dealing with opposing counsel. Because of some of the overly drastic moves by some firms, I will not hesitate to be unnecessarily aggressive when they are across the table.
Every time I see a Latham partner's name in a case, I will give them hell. If you can't even run your firm properly, I have very little confidence in your ability to stop me from beating the snot out of you. And I am sure that I'm not the only one that feels that way.
wtf? it's pretty fucking insane to bring people in and fuck every single summer in the ass for life. that's really over the top
Sorry to hear this, MLB summers. Obviously it's little consolation, but at least you won't have to try to explain why you weren't among the lucky 60%/50%/whatever to get offers, as with 3Ls who got shut out at some other firms. Good luck to you all.
The Potomac runs red with the blood of MLB summers tonight.
Fuckers.
Shame on you. Such losers at Morgan Lewis. Bastards.
57, give me a fucking break.
53 - how about NO. y would u even suggest something like that.
Even this hater of self-entitled schmucks feels bad about this news. Ouch!
Should also do a story about the stealths at Boies.
"So not everybody who summered at MLB wasted their time."
I continue to be confused by this way of referring to a no-offer summer. It reeks of the expectation that being hired for a summer internship should automatically lead to an offer of full time employment.
The MLB Summers didn't "waste their time," they were paid $30-40k (presumably) for a summer of work, and (again presumably) gained some valuable experience at how Biglaw works, not to mention a resume point.
Sure, someone might cry that being no offered is a "black mark" but given so many firms no-offering big parts of their class, and MLB in particular no-offering an entire office, that's one that's very easily explained. It's certainly not the same as if you were one of the 3-5 no-offers out of 100 summers that one might have seen in 2003.
Comment removed by moderator.
You people are unbelievable. Ending lockstep=FAIL. Firing associates=FAIL. No offering=FAIL. Cancelling unneeded programs=FAIL. It is a no win situation. Nothing less than the status quo is good enough for you. Guess what, that status quo=FAIL. Biglaw is changing and any firm that wants to stay in the market has to change too.
63 = Wanda from Latham HR.
I hear the offer rate in Philadelphia is horribly low and doesn't reflect performance or ability
I'm just glad I snagged a job when I did.
70, try current V10 associate who was referencing 67's ridiculous last paragraph.
-63
71--who did you hear that from--a summer associate? Not the best judge of performance or ability.
The gravy train for the vast majority of folks is over. Not coming back anytime soon. Time we get used to it, as much as I hate to admit it.
Dear Concerned Citizens,
A candlelight vigil will be held tonight at the Lincoln Memorial in honor of the no-offered class of MLB DC summers. A moment of silence will be followed by a keynote speech given by representatives from PH NY's summer class as well as V&E Houston's summer class.
United we stand.
- Class of 2010 Summer Associate Rep.
MLB sucks a fat one. They won't survive this recession.
This is just like Weil DC. Morgan Lewis DC summers, we feel you.

Bitches and hoes listen up y'all. I love food.
You will NEVER FORGET.
The lemmings coming down the pike in the next several years will forget.
Shearman pulled the same crap eight years ago. Ancient history now.
Morgan Lewis has only three large offices (NY, DC, Philly). Hence, in the many smaller offices with 2009 summer associates, ZERO offers are indeed being given out. Shameful.
FACT: The Ted Kennedy motorcade represents the second time a limo has driven a dead Kennedy through a major city.
88 - no it's not. Shearman used to be V10 and get top recruits, now they are filled with mostly TTT grads.
NEVER FORGET.
91 is right. Trust me, Latham will feel the effects of their bloodletting for quite some time.
NEVER FORGET.
Let me get this straight - MLB is forecasting a need for ZERO new associates for the next two years???
If that's not a sign they are going under, I don't know what is.
MORGAN LEWIS IS FAILING
Marianna = fail. Shearman has NO PRESTIGE. Nada. Zip. At least in my opinion.
It's been decades since I have sat on the recruiting committee. However, if I were still on it, I know I would never hire a no offeree. Prior to the slight retraction in this story, most of the summer plebes could save face by saying no else received an offer. Since at least one person did receive an offer, I can bet a lapdance at Rick's Cabaret that the perpetual question at your future job interviews will be: "Why weren't you the ONE that received an offer?"
The ship be sinking...
Please stop with the NEVER FORGET shtick. It's played out already and is boring me to tears.
The person I know who summered at Morgan Lewis is a horrible cur. Shame they had to fire all the rest just to get rid of her, though.
MysTTTal,
blog was better when you were on vacaycay
Morgan Lewis is no longer welcome in the Cabaret.
We do not accept I.O.U.'s.
98 -
Never forget.
As far as the idea that these firms don't care -- PR is important, and (unlike most fields) the people hiring law firms, the clients, are themselves lawyers. When ML does something like this, it looks like the firm is a potentially sinking ship. The consequences aren't confined to what upcoming law students will think. Prospective clients and lateral partners/associates also get leery.
Hey, even Latham kept one of their 1Ls that failed the bar. Maybe one of the MLB summers was a partner's/client's/government official's son/daughter?
MLB clients beware - you will have 3rd year associates doing 1st year work in 2012. Is that how you want to spend your money?
24 is hilarious... haha
93 said: "Let me get this straight - MLB is forecasting a need for ZERO new associates for the next two years???"
No, I don't think they are forecasting this. But let's not forget about the class of 2009, who are, in theory, supposed to be starting at MLB in January. The firm probably realizes that it has more than enough new blood for the next several years.
I would hope that MLB (and other firms no-offering en masse) are simply trying to abide by their current obligations, which include commitments to both current and incoming associates.
46: MLB is indeed acting prudently if they don't have any cash or work. That being said, there's no way to spin this as a positive for the firm. Any 'prudence' they're showing now is vastly outweighed by their lack of prudence leading up to this point. From a client perspective, this only demonstrates that either (a) the firm is poorly managed or (b) the firm is in terrible shape.
That's not to say that they should have hired their summers if they can't afford it. They just shouldn't try to make it seem like anything other than a desperation move.
Now if only PE's mom comments, I believe that will cover the whole kit and kaboodle . . .
105 - maybe so, but those 3rd years will be earning first year salary so who cares
Why would a client hire a firm that might not be around in a couple of years?
I will say though, if the alternative was extending offers that you later rescind, this is a far better route for the students involved. You at least have some time to look for a job and can plan accordingly.
I can say its much better for them to be honest than defer your ass three months before you're scheduled start date and then lay you off two months after you start. Love, Class of 2008
Agreed 103. MLB is acting desperate. If LB and BS failed, why not MLB.
This is AWESOME news. Those rising 3L's thought they were secure, and maybe.... just maybe, they were going to be the lucky ones of this god forsaken class. Nope. Unless by lucky, one means unemployed with 200k of debt. I love it!!! Bring us more!!!
BTW, It was annoying watching MLB and Dechert try to outdo one another 4 or 5 years ago. This time around, I kind of enjoy their race to the bottom. Not sure that the no-offers with tire tracks on them feel quite the same way. But, you don't have to bill hours in the breadline.
Morgan Lewis: "It's the Profits...err, People." I wonder if they'll change their recruiting video.
At least MLB isn't advertising for 3Ls to come in and replace the summers they have... they just aren't hiring anyone. MLB is showing that they don't have enough work to go around; Dechert is just sleazy.
This ended up being another terrible day for the next generation of Philadelphia lawyers. Entering the Biglaw market there just seems to be brutal right now. Any ideas why it seems more difficult there than say, Boston?

what's the word on mcdermott?
120 - epically bad at division.
If AboveTheLaw were worth a damn, you guys would get a photo of the 1 SA that was given an offer from Morgan Lewis. Imagine how hot this girl must be...
120- since when does 1 out of 17 = .05%? Can't you just tell that's wrong?
Thankfully my severance checks from this disaster of a law firm cleared when they did. Let's recap their actions: 1) stealth layoffs which I know for a fact happened (know several who got it in January) that they continue to lie/deny 2) cancelled summer program 3) indicate a massive associate pay cut 4) no offered almost the entire summer class. If I didn't know a few good associates there, I would root for them to be Brobecked. At least it won't be hard to explain being laid off. Of course I'd rather get laid.
128- The word on McDermott is that it is TTT. Why anyone would want an offer at that shithole is the question you should be asking.
LOL @ 120. Try 6% buddy.
120 is off by a magnitude of more than 100 times. Fail. Please moderate as offensive stupidity.
Up next? Sidley Austin ... summers beware, with Morgan largely screwing folks Sidley can come out with its numbers in the aftermath like they did with Latham and get far less publicity (at least they probably hope).
(Lucky) Timing is everything.
Duane Morris, Blank Rome at 50% or under; Dechert and Morgan Lewis ditching huge number of SA's. Any news on other Philly firms? I heard Ballard Spahr issued some deferred 2010 offers? Has this been confirmed? Any news on Pepper Hamilton, Cozen O'Connor or Drinkler Biddle?
Note that the Sidley comment is not based on anything particular but fear from friends that are summers. Hopefully Sidley will step up and do the right thing (assuming their numbers can do so) ...

The 1 alleged offer was probably related to a partner. Or possibly a cold-offer.
Jones Day Houston was at less than 40%...
137 - I know Pepper and Cozen haven't made offers yet. No idea on Drinker.
No information pertinent to the thread, but how about we all start ignoring the PEtroll? If he's for real, Obama is President, get over it, and b) if you are attempting to be humorous, you sir, Fail. As I said, if we ignore him, he'll go away and seek attention on another forum.
Despite all the shit that gets talked about it this board, I'm glad I went to Cahill!
146-thanks for the post. Knowing Pepper and their reputation for carefully lying low and then following the pack, I am not surprised that they have yet to publicize any decisions.
17 - We're lawyers (or soon to be lawyers). I'm sure there is a special place in hell for all of us.
Good ol' Morgan at it again... you got to keep an eye on him... PS. Anyone need a patent prosecuted?
Partners/managers at this firm should commit Hari Kari. Epic failure
MLB=pond scum
MLB sucks anyway.
The Morgan Lewis recruiting coordinator clearly needs to be fired.
What a bunch of duds.
The Morgan Lewis recruiting coordinator clearly needs to be fired.
What a bunch of duds.
Partner Emeritus is dead on about the fate of no offerees in the job market. All the firms that supposedly no offered an entire class ended up offering a few but booting out the vast majority. Hence it appeared that no one received an offer when in fact such an ego protective view was really a rush to judgment by some very needy and desperate peons. It is impossible to explain to people why you were not offered because if someone else was given a job, it must mean that for whatever reason that you were just not good enough. Even with some silly letter from your employer, how do you convince people that it was not a performance related issue? The cruel twist in this drama is that people were offered and that throws the ones who were not into a pit of burning dung. Hopefully they saved the $30,000-40,000 that they received for the summer because it might very well be the highest compensation that they will earn in a long, long time.
When is ATL going to quit publishing--no posting, publishing gives to much credibility--unsubstatiated rumors. There is still no verification of the number of offers. First you say no offers. Then you say one offer. The reality is you don't really know. It is all about generating hits to the site. What a rag.
I heard Pepper is making full offers.
146 - Drinker hasn't make offers yet.
Drinker, Pepper and Cozen to the top of Philly firms?
Drinker and Pepper seem to be well-positioned to weather the changed economic climate, but I am not sure about Cozen ... they have been looking to merge for years... perhaps their overemphasis on Insurance is serving as a ballast now. Pepper had relatively good PPP numbers in 2008 -single digit increases year to year.
Morgan Lewis....where will you draw the line?
159 - are those full offers with deferred start dates or fall 2010 offers?
MWE was oversubscribed in some offices so it is not apt to be great, but sounds like they will group offer some and office offer others. If you get a group offer you should be fine.
164 - Do you work at McDermott??
Just heard that MLB no offered at least some NY summers. Plus they are interviewing laterals in their finance group. High class.
164 - What does "group offer some and office offer others" mean? What's the difference?
PE: If the combination of this news and Tay Zonday's prophetic ballad don't make you weep, then you have no soul.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwTZ2xpQwpA
Yikes! You can't write this shit.
Let's say you want IP. If IP offers you they liked you and you did well. If you liked IP but you only get an offer saying you can work in SV/DC/OC then that means IP was not sure about whether they would have enough work for you. They office takes some summers until they figure if/how you will be used. It is better than no offered, but still you are on the fence.
Anyone know anything about the Dallas office? Only 3 summers there to begin with...
People have said that PR does not matter because law students will line up to accept any big law job - however, in a few years from now, let's say that you are a 2L at a top 20 school with good grades and you have offers from other firms and this garbage firm - which one would you accept? Looks like the 2011 SA class at MLB will be comprised largely of students from American and Catholic (no disrespect to students of those schools). Students may not remember this as well, but the professors and OCI that advise them will.
MORE Sparky!
More Sparky Emeritus!
Good boy!
172 -- Times are different now. All you have to do is type in "Morgan Lewis" in Google, and among the top 10 results are articles about what it's done to its associates and summer associates. Those web pages will be around till the end of time.
alright MLB no-offerees. if u want to save face and not look like a bunch of p*ssies, it is time to take matters into ur own hands. if I were one of u, I would break into the building and shit in the office of every partner. but hey, that's just me, somebody with some f*ckin balls.
Come on. Just because 1 of 17 in DC reports to Above the Law that he/she got an offer does not mean that no one else in the DC office got offers. Just throwing that out there.
i was a 55 year old partner i wouldn' care. but if i was 35 i would care about the long term recruiting prospects. this is a people business.
Elie, actually there were 19 DC Summers at MLB (2 1Ls), the Philly office had 24 Summers (1 1L). NY had 23 summers and no 1Ls.
can anyone comment on the shit from TTThelen this firm took on?
54, calm down. milbank didn't no-offer 70%, tho they no-offered a lot more than they're admitting to. they did piss people off and created enemies for life.
whining about being "ruined" is a bit melodramatic. start looking for a new job, use everything at your disposal. there are options. i'm pretty sure i'll find a job starting in 2010.
According to some of the SAs I talked to this summer, MLB SAs are terrified of leaking any info to ATL after Fran conveyed his displeasure over "what has happened to the legal industry" as a result of blogs like ATL during the firmwide SA kickoff in Baltimore. Any lucky SAs who received offers at the smaller MLB offices are probably not likely to tip off ATL for fear of reprisal...
MysTTTal ... you suck!
Thanks, Obama.
<20% offer rate? Wtf? Why did MLB even have a summer class? This is reckless and disgraceful.
Now when I came out, I told you it was just about Latham.
Then everybody had to open their mouth with a mother f******* layoff
Well this is how we gonna' do this:
f*** Milbank,
f*** Latham,
f*** Morgan Lewis as a staff, record label, and as a mother f****** crew.
And if you want to be down with V&E,
Then f*** you too.
Paul Hastings, f*** you too.
All you mother f******,
f*** you too.
(lose money, lose money)
All of y'all mother f******,
f*** you,
My low rates make sure all your PPP don't grow
Cozen is third-tier and always will be until they unveil a reasonable partnership structure and start attracting actual talent. WolfBlock alums don't count. Pepper and Drinker and maybe Duane seem well-positioned.
Not sure of the exact offer rate in NY, but it seems shockingly low, with some of the best summers, imo, getting shafted. I hope these kids land on their feet but I feel terrible for them and do not envy the position they are in one bit. The office pumped A LOT of money into the summer program, and after it was announced that the 2010 summer program was canceled, many of the SAs were optimistic about their chances. Truly a sad situation.
185,
Classic!!!
@ 4 - hahaha - yess! anybody who thinks these recruiters/HR ice princess managers are your friend is a fool!
This isn't the behavior of a healthy firm. MLB must be dealing with some serious financial issues.
If it's any consolation to the no-offered summers, I think an offer from MLB is worth about as much as an offer from Thelen, Heller or Thacher Profit was last year. They're better off starting thier job search now.

McDermott attorney, here.
Why do we recruit ugly women for summer positions?
Thanks,
Dismal in D.C.
Morgan Lewis is one of the many firms that should have never gone to $160,000. The unwillingness of many firms to admit that places like Weil, Cleary, Watchell, and Cravath are playing the game on another level is one of the major factors contributing to this meltdown.
Morgan Lewis should have stayed at around 120-125. It's a shame really.
"According to some of the SAs I talked to this summer, MLB SAs are terrified of leaking any info to ATL after Fran conveyed his displeasure over "what has happened to the legal industry" as a result of blogs like ATL during the firmwide SA kickoff in Baltimore."
LOL Law firms blaming ATL for the state of legal practice.
God, that is so fucking sick. That is like the Auschwitz guards bitching that the post-war reporters circulating those stories about ovens are to blame for killing the inmates.
193,
I agree. This firm clearly is no Watchell, Litpon, Soren and Kazt.
164 / MWE -- any idea how soon offers are going out? it's been 4 weeks since the summer program ended...
195 is comedy gold.
- 193
Any news on Reed Smith's offer rate? Could be more blood in the Potomac....
NEVER FORGET.
This must be what Morgan's Labor Department of the Year advised them: make sure the recruiter cries when she makes the no-offer calls. Steve Wall learned that from watching late night episodes of Cheers.
NEVER FORGET
Seriously, when is McDermott announcing? This is ridiculous.
I'm glad I turned summer offer from their SF office. any news on that or are the SA scared to death?

Morgan Lewis soon to follow Heller?
MLB has wised up and is running their firm like a business. That does signal demise, it signals continued stability for the firm. The days of law students and/or young associates holding firms hostage are over. Its a whole new ballgame, baby.
what about other offices? any offers in the west coast?
We are the drone, those unhappy souls whose toils in the machinery of justice get noticed only when more of our blood is needed to grease the gears.
The traditions of the legal profession are unknown to us because we were not born when they were established and we were not taught them in our law schools, electing instead, to take Law and Literature so we could catch up on our afternoon naps.
In this time of crisis we cower beneath our desks and avoid human contact for fear of catching the H1-P1 Associate Layoff Virus.
We fear to question, and have no power to change anything, and we use technology to assist the technologically illiterate partners from whom we often catch H1-P1.
We are innovators, pathfinders, and Mavericks only during our one hour of allotted sleep time each evening.
We are the Drone - Resistance is Futile
206:
Hahhaahhhaahhhahahahaha.
Sure you must be right "MLB has wised up and is running their firm like a business. That does signal demise, it signals continued stability for the firm."
Have you convinced yourself yet? No new associates for two years??
206= soon to be dequitized or dissolved, twice divorced MLB partner who does not generate enough revenue to pay either his alimony or his own salary.
How long till you can collect social security?
By the way, the offer number in D.C. is much higher than the 1 reported here.
211, is the number 2?
212 - Higher than 2, still not great compared to normal years but nowhere near the numbers ATL is posting that is causing all the hysteria.
213, MLB created this situation for themselves with their horsesh*t offer ratios - not ATL.
214 - you're right - just wanted to chime in that there were more offers than reported here, that's all.
211 & 215- what are the numbers then?
192, to date the knuckle draggers like you
No offers in the LA office, but there were only 5 summers anyway.
211, 215 and to reiterate 216 - what are the true DC MLB numbers? And if there is more than 1, when are these "lucky" summers starting? Seems like getting a ticket to board a sinking ship...
I would be very surprised if the firmwide offer rates exceeds 10%. That's 10% of 108 summers. The offer rates at the bigger offices are just horrifically brutal, and the firm practically said outright that it wasn't extending offers in the smaller branches. This is an epic, epic embarrassment.
For those who are there, is the work that slow? What about hot areas like energy? I would think they would need people.
218 - "only 5 summers there anyway" - that's 5 more people screwed
how about SF and Palo Alto?
223- Not sure if any summers received offers. I doubt it.
About 10 offers given TOTAL firmwide (out of 100+ SAs). Lat and Elie, you guys have got to write something about this absolute atrocity.
225- I agree. more coverage on this massacre. Why bring in so many when the ship was sinking?
Palo Alto - 1 of 4
SF - unknown, but likely around 25%
Including 227's numbers, there are only about 7 confirmed offers firmwide out of ~110 SAs. A 10-15% offer rate for a 1400 lawyer firm deserves a bit more coverage and scrutiny from ATL.
more like 30%
http://www.legaldaze.com/2009/09/01/morgan-lewis-gives-offers-to-less-than-30-percent-of-summers/
Final tally- 18% offers given out in NY!!!
