Paul Hastings Correction: The Firm Will Defer Part of the Class of 2010 to 2011

Paul Hastings logo.JPGYesterday, we reported that Paul Hastings would be allowing its class of 2010 associates to start on time in the fall of 2010. We received this information directly from a Paul Hastings spokesperson.

Sadly for future Paul Hastings associates, the spokesperson was in error. Here’s the new quote:

Paul Hastings will have some of its new associates start in the fall of 2010, but some new associates will start in the January 2011.

In our poll yesterday, 57% of you said you would rather risk summering at a firm with a 75% offer rate for the guarantee of starting on time. Well, I guess that firm is not Paul Hastings.

So much for any possible saving face by PH. A much lower offer rate than peer firms AND some indeterminate (read: they reserve the right to defer everyone) chance of being deferred. Why not just take less summers in the first place and then make more of them offers? At least in that case, a quarter to a half of the PH summers wouldn't be completely screwed now.

The better question for yesterdays poll would have been would you rather firms bring in the historical average number of summer associates and then cut 10% or bring in half as many summer associates and give at or near 100%.

Clearly if you expect to be one of the chosen summers in the half size pool that choice would be better for you, i.e. a HYS or top 10$ at another tier 1. But if you are at a tier 2 or tier 3 school and in the past would've landed a big firm summer spot, you either didn't in 2009 or won't in 2010 as firms drastically cut back their summer programs.

what's the backstory on 42/44?

avatar
50 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, August 18, 2009 3:10 PM

44: The lack of response is because they have no defenses here and more importantly - they are hoping that people won't discuss it on ATL....or anywhere!

47/49: Mgmt. shafted the staff over the end of the month payroll - they are only giving them one week of pay instead of two and telling them that if necessary they can cash out a week's vacation (and what if you don't have a week's vacation to cash out!) or ask for an advance (!!!) (obviously they will not want people to do this). The reason given was because of a "change in payroll systems."

The only reason for the deferrals is because Seth and Greg need to stealth layoff enough attorneys to make room for the incoming first years - where is your common sense? How could there possibly be a problem with cash flow when the firm just increased rates by 5-10% across the board? All "PH 50" clients are looking to get further raped on fees.

avatar
64 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, August 18, 2009 4:45 PM

avatar
67 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, August 18, 2009 6:04 PM

You can add partners to one office and close others. Just because you hire someone in LA doesn't mean ATL is safe. Just because you have some IP lawyers in Palo Alto and DC, doesn't mean NY will be around in its current form. And if PH's credit facility is under stress, nothing like closing underpeforming offices (in the bank's eyes not my personal opinion) to get the reassurance you need.

Just a guess from the aggregate comments over this and different threads, PH will scale back offices and attempt to resize its US operations. Maybe close some foreign offices too. If you were a prospective new partner and you heard that this was the grand plan, you'd probably feel ok that your PPP will be protected in the new PH. So that's why they can attract new partners even in their current mess.

69 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, August 18, 2009 6:16 PM

I don't know about it, 66.
And I don't know if PH will defer only "part" of the summer associates.
They treat the associates as commodity without any intention to make investment on them.
It occurs to me that they saved 50% of their summer class only to save their face and manipulate the rankings. They will defer if they want to defer, they will rescind if they need to rescind. Obvious thing is that they are not going to think about our situation when they make the decisions.

I don't understand why everyone is saying all the summers are now screwed. You still have fall and spring OCI plus just regular on your own job hunting. You still have a whole YEAR to find a job. And now you have a prestigous firm to put on your resume. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and start looking for work. The real people that are screwed are the ones who passed up all the OCI's thinking they were secure and then got rescinded around graduation (think MASS clerks).

PH Atl also no offered 50% of its class. The 'firm wide" 75% offer rate is crap.

BUT PH is not about to run out of cash re: the staff pay change. Yes, they're completely screwing over the staff, but it really does seem to be just a pay roll switch. Right now, staff is paid "currently," and we're moving to a 1 or 2 week delayed payroll, which is more standard for most businesses.

Granted, none of this means PH is a great place. It's still a cesspool who is currently embroiled in stealth layoffs. They've been cutting in NY and DC. It's only a matter of time before people are cut in other offices (and from what I've heard, Atlanta associates are likely all on the chopping block). They're just spacing them out so as not to draw attention to these "performance" decisions.

avatar
94 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, August 19, 2009 9:59 AM

Its like listening to a crack addict trying to convince someone they do not smoke crack anymore with a crack pipe in their mouth.

You guys are so off base. PHJW is engaging in a wholesale bloodletting of associates and counsel, as well as non-performing partners. The real estate/capital markets group at PHJW will never be the same. Seth used it for a good 10 year run, in a year, it will be vitually non-existent, and will only exist to service the "PH 50" corporate clients. It is Seth's dream to turn PHJW into Latham. There are many good people there who worked around the clock for 8 years, only to be thrown under the bus.
