Paul Hastings Correction: The Firm Will Defer Part of the Class of 2010 to 2011
Yesterday, we reported that Paul Hastings would be allowing its class of 2010 associates to start on time in the fall of 2010. We received this information directly from a Paul Hastings spokesperson.
Sadly for future Paul Hastings associates, the spokesperson was in error. Here’s the new quote:
Paul Hastings will have some of its new associates start in the fall of 2010, but some new associates will start in the January 2011.
In our poll yesterday, 57% of you said you would rather risk summering at a firm with a 75% offer rate for the guarantee of starting on time. Well, I guess that firm is not Paul Hastings.

OH MY GOSH! FIRST!
OH MY GOSH! FIRST!
Shocker....
The truth slowly comes out. Ask them about their NY office offer rate while you're at it.
I heard a rumor that Kash emails the first commenter of every post and includes a voucher good for a dinner for two at Red Lobster. True?
Paul Hastings is such a hack firm it is unreal. They just have one public relations gaffe after another. Sad and pathetic.
What about Milbank?
Goddamn this firm is bad. What a vicious, underhanded place to work.
Paul Hastings? More like Small Hastings.
They will start in "THE" January 2011. Very prestigious.
There's a She Wolf in the closet, let it out so it can breath...
You misunderstood the captain.
The ship surely be sinking.
So much for any possible saving face by PH. A much lower offer rate than peer firms AND some indeterminate (read: they reserve the right to defer everyone) chance of being deferred. Why not just take less summers in the first place and then make more of them offers? At least in that case, a quarter to a half of the PH summers wouldn't be completely screwed now.
WHAT THE HELL HAS PH BEEN DOING!? ARE THEY TRYING TO SCREW WITH THE WHOLE REST OF THE WORLD? WHAT A PIECE OF CRAP!
@6 - True... and the biscuits are delicious.
more likely, Fat Bastard Elie got the information wrong. note that the original post has Elie's bracketed insertion rather than a quote from the firm. That's what affirmative action gets you.
How you like me now?
You're a towel
So now we finally have a law firm who has officially given under 75% offer rate on top of deferrals. This is what every big non V10 firm has been waiting for. Fellow 2009 summer associates, let the slaughter begin...
V50 summer
What is the name of that seafood dish that Maine is really famous for?
what a piece of shit firm
SO EXACTLY HOW BIG IS BERNIE MADOFF'S COCK?
Let this be a lesson to you kids: Do well on the LSAT, get into a good law school and then get good grades your first year so you can go to a good firm that won't screw you over like this.
20 - titcr, although i doubt other V50ish firms will want to go through the same PR nightmare PH just endured
Not a 75% offer rate, and not starting on time. What a crock.
23 - ask PE. I hear he's a cock-watcher.
24, don't go to law school unless you can get into HYS
They also offered a coat hanger option in lieu of a deferral.
When studying for the LSAT, I recall learning that "some" equals one or more.
god i love this firm
10 = EPIC FAIL
PauHast = short name One Firm. One Vision.
The better question for yesterdays poll would have been would you rather firms bring in the historical average number of summer associates and then cut 10% or bring in half as many summer associates and give at or near 100%.
Clearly if you expect to be one of the chosen summers in the half size pool that choice would be better for you, i.e. a HYS or top 10$ at another tier 1. But if you are at a tier 2 or tier 3 school and in the past would've landed a big firm summer spot, you either didn't in 2009 or won't in 2010 as firms drastically cut back their summer programs.
C'mon ATL! Give us the story on Barrygate!
Elie, you fat tub of shit, i FUCKING HATE YOU.
I think all 2L summer should look into the SJD programs. Do another 5 years of law school, by then the economy should have picked up.
Such dupliciTTTy. Uncle Paul really needs TTTo clean up his acTTT.
any additional proof needed that PH can't be trusted?
What happened to the "Paul HasTTTings Truth Squad"???
What a shit-tastic firm. But no worries, it won't exist by the time 2011 rolls around.
Is it true that PH is paying staff only 1 week salary due to low cash flow? If so, why did they just hire two new big partners?
42: It's true. We (staff) all got the message.
Also note PH's lack of response re screwing over staff for a week's pay.
even their logo looks like hastings is fleeing paul
Paul Hastings killed my pet lobster.
44: What's the story behind that?
50% offer rates in Atlanta. I got no offered. :(
what's the backstory on 42/44?
44: The lack of response is because they have no defenses here and more importantly - they are hoping that people won't discuss it on ATL....or anywhere!
47/49: Mgmt. shafted the staff over the end of the month payroll - they are only giving them one week of pay instead of two and telling them that if necessary they can cash out a week's vacation (and what if you don't have a week's vacation to cash out!) or ask for an advance (!!!) (obviously they will not want people to do this). The reason given was because of a "change in payroll systems."
WTF, that's insane. The ship be sinking.
Hey ATL! Re: 50, where's your coverage of this breaking story?
48: fellow no offered PH but from NY. The Atlanta office will not make it through the recession if there is not significant improvement in the economy within the next year. View it as a blessing.
50, you're saying Paul Hastings can't even make payroll?
I would not make such a bold statement and the fact is I am not in a position to answer that q
I'm just responding to 42 and 44 and affirming 43.
PE is a visionary. He believes in spending next year's pay check today. Just ask Discover Card.
50: That doesn't even seem legal.
Has anyone heard what happened to PH's DC summer class? Are offer rates higher there?
The ship be sinking...
What the heck is Barrygate all about?
50 - Next thing they will issue I.O.U.s. Not good, not good.
PH = Heller Ehrman, Thelen
i give it till the end of the year
The only reason for the deferrals is because Seth and Greg need to stealth layoff enough attorneys to make room for the incoming first years - where is your common sense? How could there possibly be a problem with cash flow when the firm just increased rates by 5-10% across the board? All "PH 50" clients are looking to get further raped on fees.
63: But since PH's clients are all "rate insensitive", they shouldn't mind taking it in the ass.
60 - From what I gather, it's about some horny partner with a little dick...
PH has a lot of $$$. This talk of insolvency is highly misplaced.
You can add partners to one office and close others. Just because you hire someone in LA doesn't mean ATL is safe. Just because you have some IP lawyers in Palo Alto and DC, doesn't mean NY will be around in its current form. And if PH's credit facility is under stress, nothing like closing underpeforming offices (in the bank's eyes not my personal opinion) to get the reassurance you need.
Just a guess from the aggregate comments over this and different threads, PH will scale back offices and attempt to resize its US operations. Maybe close some foreign offices too. If you were a prospective new partner and you heard that this was the grand plan, you'd probably feel ok that your PPP will be protected in the new PH. So that's why they can attract new partners even in their current mess.
58, not sure of the full DC numbers, but it was not good. I know of at least 3 who got no-offered, and I think there are more.
I don't know about it, 66.
And I don't know if PH will defer only "part" of the summer associates.
They treat the associates as commodity without any intention to make investment on them.
It occurs to me that they saved 50% of their summer class only to save their face and manipulate the rankings. They will defer if they want to defer, they will rescind if they need to rescind. Obvious thing is that they are not going to think about our situation when they make the decisions.
Elie done been hornswoggled again.
Bottom line, unless you have a nice book of bus., NOBODY is safe. PH will do anything and everything to maintain PPP (further stealthing, closing offices, outsourcing, whatever). Human capital has no value in their eyes. Barry made this perfectly clear in his speech to us.
65 - Looks like he has a few things in common with Madoff.
68 has it right.
No-offered PHDC
Hey 71- now may be the time to give this a rest. I understand your upset about this situation, but it's probably not doing you any good to spend time bashing PHJW on this chat room. Time to move on and find a different job. This goes for all the other PH summers as well (whether or not you got offers). HTH.
I don't understand why everyone is saying all the summers are now screwed. You still have fall and spring OCI plus just regular on your own job hunting. You still have a whole YEAR to find a job. And now you have a prestigous firm to put on your resume. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and start looking for work. The real people that are screwed are the ones who passed up all the OCI's thinking they were secure and then got rescinded around graduation (think MASS clerks).
-someone who found a job 3L year through fall OCI without summering and did not get rescinded.
66-O'RLY? No debt, right? How do collections march up with certain massive compensation guarantees, hmm?
75, bite me. we've already missed 3L fall OCI, as if that were actually useful in this market. I suspect you probably graduated a few years ago and are currently working for 65K, yes?

75 here - and no, you are wrong. I graduated this year, will be working for a mid size, starting around 75k not including bonuses.
*sends 75 my resume*
PS: I'm sorry if my post sounded bitchy. I actually didn't mean it that way. I meant to say it is not all over and there is still hope. I'm sorry that you already missed your OCI, I guess my school did it different. I really do wish you luck.

SeTTTh.
83, are you saying Barry Brooks, the Lilliputian chairman of Paul Hastings' New York office, has a small penis?
Why are there so many Barry Brook's haters? Is he that of a bad person?
74=86=Barry Brooks
75 is a goddamn retard. 3L OCI is nonexistent. I bid but got no interviews.
You say people who passed up OCI but got rescinded around graduation are stupid. Tell me, should they have accepted an offer through OCI knowing that they had already accepted at the firm they summered at and had taken an offer from?
And you haven't been rescinded yet- you haven't even started.

Rim is a very charming individual and is known to hock/cheat/report people for the pettiest cash issues imaginable....she has come a long way baby!
PHDC no-offered 50% of its class
Is Paul Hastings offering a defferal stipend?
PH Atl also no offered 50% of its class. The 'firm wide" 75% offer rate is crap.
BUT PH is not about to run out of cash re: the staff pay change. Yes, they're completely screwing over the staff, but it really does seem to be just a pay roll switch. Right now, staff is paid "currently," and we're moving to a 1 or 2 week delayed payroll, which is more standard for most businesses.
Granted, none of this means PH is a great place. It's still a cesspool who is currently embroiled in stealth layoffs. They've been cutting in NY and DC. It's only a matter of time before people are cut in other offices (and from what I've heard, Atlanta associates are likely all on the chopping block). They're just spacing them out so as not to draw attention to these "performance" decisions.
How the hell is ATL reporting that PH has an offer rate of 75% when almost every single one of their offices had an offer rate of 50%?
what a TTT shithole
Why hasn't ATL reported that PHNY no offered summers by saying that "their evaluations did not live up to PHNY's high standards?" Instead ATL just listens to what PH tells them and reports it. Its like listening to a crack addict trying to convince someone they do not smoke crack anymore with a crack pipe in their mouth.
You guys are so off base. PHJW is engaging in a wholesale bloodletting of associates and counsel, as well as non-performing partners. The real estate/capital markets group at PHJW will never be the same. Seth used it for a good 10 year run, in a year, it will be vitually non-existent, and will only exist to service the "PH 50" corporate clients. It is Seth's dream to turn PHJW into Latham. There are many good people there who worked around the clock for 8 years, only to be thrown under the bus.
Anyone wanna guess when the PHNY lay-offs will come?
98: I say 3 weeks. Associates this summer in the NY office were open about how they were going to be axed. This occurred in all departments even the "busy" litigation department. PS: I was offered a spot and only hope my government interviews go well.
98: I think the lay-offs will be staggered to fly under the radar. There is a rumor that some PHNY staff will be let go this Friday.
99 - Good luck with the interviews. Anybody who can get out should do so.
F*ck all you PH haters. I can't wait to start after my deferral, I am just appalled by your juvenile anonymous trashing.
102: you're an anonymously juvenile hater too - by definition and example. Good luck with your deferred start date.
102 = SeTTTh
102: I am appalled by your infantile naivete. Good luck with Paul HasTTTings!
100: Yes, my hr tipster tells me that two NY paras will be let go on Friday.
106: did your tipster say from which dep't?
107: Unfortunately, no.
85 - Yes, his ego is massive and his cock is tiny. He is also a motherless little fuckin' bean counter who enjoys lording it over the NY office.
109
But he's OUR little fuckin beancounter. What a charming little prick!
100/106 - your so called HR tipster is playing you. No drama on Friday.
100/106: your so called HR tipster is playing you. No drama on Friday.
112: Maybe so, but layoffs are coming to PHNY. You can bank on it.
