Sidley D.C. Wants Some Incoming Associates to Start … Early!
Yesterday, we learned that Morgan, Lewis & Bockius came up with only one offer for the 17 second-year law students who summered in the firm’s D.C. office.
At Sidley Austin’s D.C. office, the news is very different. Above the Law has learned that Sidley D.C. is calling some of its incoming associates and asking them to start early. A Sidley-bound tipster reports:
Everybody in the D.C. office who expressed an interest has received a call from the D.C. office to start early — right after the Labor Day. Yay! Yay! Yay!
Sidley offered a voluntary deferral option to its incoming associates. The firm reports that about a third of their incoming class voluntarily decided to start in November 2010. The rest of the class is slated to begin work in November 2009. But a few people in D.C. will have the opportunity to start earning money even earlier. A Sidley spokesperson released this statement to Above the Law:
[A]bout 100 associates will start with the firm on November 16, 2009. Due to the needs of certain practice groups, a handful of fall associates will join the firm before November 16, 2009.
This is good news. Cherish it, my friends.

THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS FOR JOHN MCCAIN!

I remember when it was a good thing to get some extra time before having to start work. Back then, one could mention crusteans of the butt without fear of reprisal.
Do people read the stories FIRST or post FIRST FIRST? I think the latter.
How is Sidley able to start incoming associates now, but not able to give word to summer associates about their offer status yet? Sidley is one of the last firms remaining to not give out offer information.
Winston also has not given out offer information.
Can someone explain how you express an interest in starting early? I mean, every inoming associate obviously wants to start ASAP...
How exacty did this go down?
Anybody know what that handful of associates is going to get paid?
SIDLEY RULES.
Best appellate / Supreme Court practice group in the country.
Dubya? How you like me now?
My firm is definitely not bringing them in early. Maybe Sidley has BR work to do or something. Man I need to stop reading ATL, Chrometa says I spent 22 min 3s on here yesterday.
Who's Chrometa? Sounds like a pretty name.
I wish Sidley Austin wanted me to start. I sent them application after I got fired from ATL, but they didn't call me back. I went to their NY office see if I could get any face time with a partner, but security ecorted me out of the building and said homeless people can't come inside. I still beliebve no firm called me back because I printed my cover letters on Above The Law stationary, and not because, as Lat said when he fired me, that I "have the legal acumen of an intoxicated porpoise." He's just jealous that I'm the first Ivy League graduate to ever win my career through an internet poll.
Looks like Sidley is doing quite well in some of its practice groups, after all.
Seedlings of panic hiring are emerging. Spring 2010 will tell the tale.
Law, the Boom and Bust profession.
Anyone know if any of the other Sidley offices are doing the same thing?
QUINN REGAINS a worthy opponent. Good news Sidley
I knew I should've went with sidley . . . poop.
Anyone know which practice groups?
Sidley NY is fucked. I've heard rumors of 40-50% SA offer rates, forthcoming.
13 - Chrometa is sweet software that does most of your timesheet work for you. Tracks what you do all day, organizes it for you, etc. She's my new best friend.
to the troll that keeps mentioning chrometa, we get it, you just finished your 1L summer with a firm. now stop referencing it in the comments for every post.
I used to date a chick named Sidley Austin. She was hot.
24 - i used to date a chick name chrometa...not so hot. but she was easy

#8: They called each person in the class (who was interested in litigation) and asked if they were willing and able to start in early September.
I wonder if they are able to find many people who could start early on the drop of a dime. The office is not huge. I'm guessing there are 20 or so incoming attorneys. Some are with public interest groups until November. Others may not be able to move to the city that quickly. And no doubt at least a few had some vacation plans! But they can probably find enough.
2 months pay is no small matter.
I am pretty sure similar calls were placed to a few ppl in both the NY and Chicago offices, for busy practice groups.

The deferred kids are joining the firm in nov 2010? thats news to me. it was supposed to be jan 2011.
we begin on nov 16 tho id love to start earlier. call me sidley!
29 raises a good point. what kinda TTT invites its associates to start early just because they are busy? kirkland would never do that.
"You go into the arena alone. The lions are hungry for you."
Damn I wish I had never invested so much time eating Twinkies in third grade...I could have learned grammar! I could have been a real lawyer!
This is awesome but if they give offers to half of their summer associates I'm now going to be extra, extra mad.
Very funny, 14!
ha, okay, some people coming in early in sidley DC is a good thing for those associates. but it is a well-known fact that sidley NY is f*cked.
but sidley NY- from what ive heard- is also inviting some ppl to start early. theres no question that they are hurting in some crucial areas- securitization is dead, for example- but the rest of the groups seem pretty busy.
36 = 29 = kirkland. you're still ahead in the vault rankings, relax.
19 - You should have GONE with Sidley, not "should have went" with them. Your lack of grammatical ability would have no doubt gotten you fired quickly even if you had gone (or went, as it were) with Sidley.
Wow I wish I could start early too
I still think the majority of January Deferrals will turn into revoked offers within the next few weeks. This is not a trend -- do not get your hopes up.
They probably just landed a few cases that will require substantial document production. Unless you're the kind of person who likes spending hours in front of a monitor screening documents for responsiveness, and then AC or WP, take advantage of your later start date. Several years ago I would have begged to start in mid-Nov.

It is kind of hard to believe this is true. There is also a rumor that half the LA summer associates have yet to receive offers while others got the call on Thursday - aka half of them are not getting offers.
Sidley DC is badly in need of lit associates, especially in appellate. Many star mid- and upper-level associates landed top DOJ jobs in the last year. But you think they would spend its extra coin on a few ct of appeals clerks who would hit the ground running, rather than on 1st years who won't be doing significant drafting for at least a few months...
these are healthcare associates. they are drowning in work in dc, for reasons that should be obvious
Wow this is great news indeed- I expect all law firms in America to adopt this model overnight, and the economy will rebound within 48 hours. Thank you Sidley Austin for making this possible.
Sidley's deferral's are NOT "voluntary." Many of us were bullied into saying the magic words.
47 is right
can ATL please do a story on 47?
