Alston & Bird: Sit Tight Summers Your Offer is Still Being Considered

alston bird logo.JPGSummer associates with Alston & Bird in 2009 are starting to get a little anxious. We know that so far, none of you have received offers. But that is going to change. Alston & Bird will make offers to some people. The firm is just still trying to figure out how many offers to extend. This email was sent from Alston & Bird to its summers on Friday:

Hi everyone -

Just wanted to give you a quick update regarding the timing of offers. You may recall that we’re coordinating our decisions as a Firm this year rather than by office (though offers will be office specific). Unfortunately, not all of our offices are ready with their decisions and as a result, we won’t be able to communicate our decisions this week. We apologize for the delay, and assure you that we will be in touch as soon as possible. Please don’t hesitate to give me a call if you need anything. Many thanks.

One tipster doesn’t think Alston is wondering what its summers need:

She knows what we need…f****** job offers. Hate to say it, but this is definitely bringing the morale of the summer class down. Also seems really sketchy—there are rumors they were interviewing 3L’s. Wonder if that is what the delay is about?

Patience dear 3Ls, patience. Morale is irrelevant. Stick to your 3L interviewing schedule. Alston will get back to you when it is ready.

I have to agree - morale is irrelevant here.

Alston & Bird?? I was previously under the impression that was a store in the strip mall that sold candles. Look, I have a simple suggestion: Create two ATL sites. One for the big boys and another - Junior ATL - for small firms in small cities. Hate to sound like a snob, but I don't come to this site for stories about some firm I've never heard of. The new site could be called Below the Law or Below Above the Law.

at least this firm had the courtesy of sending their SAs an email - can't say that about a lot of other firms

If these schlubs who labored at Alston had applied themselves in life they may not have ended up slaving away at such a reprehensible law firm.

I worked countless hours to develop my sophisticated demeanor and rock solid cognizance. I also have a heinous amount of wealth.

This firm, like many, is debating the minimum number of offers they can make without damaging the firm's reputation. They are relieved to know that one per office (not counting partners' kids) will suffice.

Even though no one has ever heckled the President on the House floor, and the healthcare plan expressly states that no coverage will be extended to aliens, Representative Wilson should not have to apologize for his outburst in public.

They're waiting for other firms to announce. Seems like there might be a race to the bottom as firms try find the lowest possible offer rate without generating lots of bad press.

avatar
39 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, September 14, 2009 11:38 AM

The tipper sounds like a real dbag. Seriously, the firm is actually communicating with you rather than leaving you in the dark, so you forward to ATL and then rip them a new one. Don't worry, next time A&B will keep silent just like the rest of the firms that haven't extended any offers yet.

43 Posted by SarahSmile | Permalink Monday, September 14, 2009 11:44 AM

sit tight, 3L's? Only a tiny fraction of all 3Ls will ever have a shot at a job involving summer associateship and "offers". Most law school grads either have to work in another field entirely or they get jobs with their parent's law firms, or after a year or so after graduation, they get a job doing document review, insurance defense, family law or something like that for about 35K per year.

Alston and Bird etc is Biglaw. Maybe 15 percent, tops, of all law grads get these jobs or even get considered for them.

These summers are better off getting no offered. Alston & Bird is full of the phoniest people you will ever meet. All that Fortune "best places to work" stuff is bullshit. The friendliness and happy demenor of the people is way over the top and is 100% fake. It's a bizzare place.

Other things that bring down summer associate morale:

1. having to bill more than 5 hours in a day

2. cutting the lunch per diem from $40 to $35

3. scheduling anything work related for the morning after a big summer event (i.e., any day of the week)

avatar
59 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, September 14, 2009 2:49 PM

How about a post/story on all the firms who still have not told their summers about full-time offers?
