Hamline Law Faculty Might Need Some Ritalin
Is there any failure where attention deficit disorder isn’t the appropriate excuse? A Hamline law professor allegedly committed tax evasion, and she claims it was due to ADD. According to the ABA Journal:
Prosecutors claim law professor Robin Magee, an expert in criminal law, didn’t file her state tax returns for 2004 through 2006 until this year, never filed for 2007, and underpaid her taxes by $5,000 over the period, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.Magee allegedly told investigators she wasn’t able to complete her tax returns on time because she has extreme attention deficit disorder, according to the Pioneer Press story. Investigators also claim Magee told them she isn’t familiar with tax law; however, her online biography says she practiced tax law while in private practice.
Apparently, Magee has been suffering from ADD/tax fraud for a long time. Details after the jump.
Professor Magee didn’t just develop ADD yesterday. Based on her tax returns, she’s been suffering for a long time. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports this little nugget:
Between 1991 and 2003, she filed only one tax return, in 1997, within the required time, the department said.
In addition to her debilitating illness, Magee also claims she doesn’t have any familiarity with tax. But …
Magee, who has been employed by Hamline for 17 years, told an investigator “she teaches classes on race and religion and is not familiar with tax law,” the complaint states. However, according to her Hamline biography, tax law was one of the areas she “concentrated in” while in private practice.
Don’t worry Hamline students. You’ll always have this.

I suppose that I should know the answer to this question, but is Hamline University School of Law accredited by the American Bar Association? A member in good standing of the American Association of Law Schools?
2, Hamline lost its ABA accreditation due to having multiple felons on the payroll, including in faculty positions. However, it remains accredited by the State Bar of Minnesota, so rising 2L's take the 'baby bar' and are then eligible to keep studying if they pass; upon graduation, they can sit for the Minnesota bar exam and may be able to eventually get into other jurisdictions by reciprocity.
Hamline.
With a name like that, how can a school not be shitty.
The Brooklyn Law School of Minnesota.
Is Hamline affiliated with Bovine University?
Mystal, the name of this school is making you hungry, isn't it? You know it is. Come on, just admit it. You want yer self a big juicy hamline sammich, don't you, you fat fuck.

People should be disbarred just for making bad faith arguments. She is claiming her ADD is sooo bad she can't fill out a tax return, whch takes all of 20 minutes, yet somehow it didn't stop her from getting a JD and passing the bar? Just plain stupid

Forget the supposed prior "concentration" in tax law--if she is a criminal law expert, why the hell didn't she STFU and lawyer up immediately, even if she hasn't yet been Mirandized?!?!? Presumably she has enough dough to be represented prior to being charged with anything. Now she's backed herself into a corner and *may* have committed additional crimes by *perhaps* lying to investigators.
Never heard of the place. Is this a real law school?
I had ADD during law school, too. The school gave me extra time to take my exams and I finished Magna. Haters who didn't finish at the top of the class tried to call me "asterisk" as they said my Magna should have an asterisk next to it. The only thing worse than suffering from chronic ADD is having people chastise you for it. I hope this lady wins, but she will always be kind of a loser for working at a TTT.
Hamline - the fatchick answer to the Rockettes.
who's applying for the new job opening up in Minnesota? Has Roxanna thought about it?
Kash's parents live in a $4.5 million brownstone in Manhattan. Kash is trustfund wealthy but does not flaunt it. She does, however, tend to date guys from poor, working class backgrounds. Not sure if she needs to feel superior or if she is compensating for feelings of undeserved wealth.
I'm starting to think there may be a few too many law schools in the US...and professors...
She was in UChicago's fairly prestigious Bigelow Program for entry-level faculty. What a farce.
Go alma mater.
Ass crustaceans can be a very expensive habit.
A 2 second google search tells you that Hamline IS accredited by the ABA and the AALS

15: Best comment ever.
Did she manage to file her federal returns? That might come back to bite her in the future as well. 18 is right on.
19 - as in Deuce, the Male Gigolo?
21 - Obviously you're new here.
YOU LIE!
If these are the types of legal arguments that profs teach students to make at Hamline, those kids should have their tuition reimbursed.
1) How did she get through law school
2) How did she take the bar?
3) Has she never heard of H&R Block et al?

14: If you only suffered from ADD "during" law school, then you don' actually suffer from ADD.
HTH.
17 - somehow Kash's hotness index just received a couple bumps
Hamline is the Suffolk of the midwest
The on-line biography linked to in the ABA article indicates she went to Michigan for undergrad & law school. Probably makes her a sandwich stealer, too.
Isn't Hamline where that tool from the dancing wedding video was going? Epic fail all around.
-32
I believe you have forgotten Cooley
I would eat Hamline out of Kash's ass if this were true.
Shafeef
31 - So what you're saying is it now registers at two bumps?
Isn't tax fraud a per se ethical violation under most state bar ethical canons?
Not sayin' she committed tax fraud.
Just sayin'.
Please somebody shut this school down.
Does anyone know if there's a breakdown somewhere of the number of legal malpractice claims based on lawschools of the offending lawyers?
- 35
Great point, my bad. haha
32
21, thank you for bringing that to my attention. They are falsely claiming they are accredited, despite their accreditation being revoked. I will inform the ABA and the state attorney general. Thank you again.

I am making love to a sandwich right now. Be back in a few.
Mystal Hamline

Though after this episode (and the fact I met a hot contract lawyer/Cooley grad over the weekend) I feel Hamline may have the leg up on being the Suffolk of the Midwest.

I am not familiar with much tax law, but I do know it requires one to FILE A FRIGGIN' RETURN.
Jeepers, lady. Get a better excuse.
Jeepers Creepers
Get a load of those Peepers!

Ritalin?
Ritalin?!
Ritalin is for pussies and AA cases like Mystal.
Coke on a Thursday, bitches.
6 - Shouldn't that be Porcine, not bovine?
More Kash tidbits, please!!
Seton Hall is the Hamline of the East.
Fill out your tax return every year if you take in income. Common sense. Has nothing to do with ADD.
This gives people with ADD who fought through it to get a JD, pass the bar, and practice decent law a bad name.
Take responsibility.

This would never hapen at Widener
21- You are a piece of work. First, you are oblivious to #2's running joke. Nuff said.
Then you site to the school's own website as your credible source.
Here's a hint for when/if you are working as a lawyer some day- go to a neutral, credible source for your information. It may take longer than 2 seconds on google, but it beats getting charged with malpractice.
Looks like another affirmative action jobber: this lady Robin Magee, Van Jones, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Sotomayor. The list goes on and on of incompetents.
The problem is when promoted through AA you reach heights out of your league. You also do a dissservice to legitimate minority students.
@54 Widener tough!
Good to see folks who "have" ADD during law school - and get 100-200% more time on tests - get what they deserve.
Well, she's not a member of the Minnesota bar. I wonder if she passed any bar?
http://www.mncourts.gov/mars/Default.aspx
HA, she's suspended in Michigan for non payment of dues. Bet it will be really hard for her to get reinstated...

60, that figures
Hamline? Sounds like a party line for MysTTTAl.
Hamline? With a name like that they should've gone all the way and called it HamBone U. Then maybe Lat and PE would do some recruiting for male ASSociates there.
I count 5 fonts/typestyles in the school's logo. Does the whole place have ADD?

This chick IS an AA case. Do your research.
As you may have heard by now, a state criminal complaint has been filed against Associate Professor Robin Magee in Ramsey County District Court alleging several state income tax offenses. This is a sudden and disappointing development. While we are sensitive to Professor Magee's rights and her presumption of innocence, we also recognize our primary obligation to provide our students with instruction by law faculty who meet the highest standards of the profession. I will keep you advised as the law school responds to this matter.

you know, the racist comments here are not only stupid, but offensive. What does it take to get a commetn deleted, Elie?

69, you have to say something bad about an advertiser or a sister site. If the professor wants comments about her deleted, she can buy an ad.
Suggestion: Create two ATL sites. One for law school news that affects Harvard, Yale and Stanford, and another - Junior ATL - for law school news affecting every other school, whether accredited or not. Hate to sound like a snob, but I don't come to this site for stories about some online law school with a tax evading professor. The new site could be called Below the Law or Below Above the Law.
69: your assumptions are very tired. I hope you didn't injure your knee when it moved sharply and involuntarily.
Criticism of affirmative action--even being downright snarky about it--does not equate to racism. Some criticism of it may--may--be a cover for racism, but very much of it is not.
Don't equate the two.
#71 - I'm willing to bet that (a) I have a better job than you (if you even have one), (b) I get paid more than you, (c) my job is more interesting than yours, (d) I've done much more substantive work than you, and (e) I am not nearly the douche bag you are.
Frankly, nobody cares that much about those schools outside of the other ass sniffers who went to those schools as well. Sorry, people just don't.
A lot of us can go to a great school, but not one of the ones you listed, and still get great and high paying jobs. Best part is, we don't sit at home and jerk off to the U.S. News and World Report like its a goddamn Playboy.
I went T14 and I have to say the most T14 people are not that likable and hence are poor trial lawyers. Go to any criminal courthouse in America and you'll find some star TTT lawyer. T14 is useful for appellate work and professors. That said, trial lawyers are essentially snake oil salesmen.
The comments about her on ratemyprofessor.com are illustrative. Also read the post on anonymouscontractlawyer.blogspot.com for more info.
The saddest part is that Hamline doesn't even have the worst local reputation among Twin Cities TTTs. Plenty of Hamline grads are gainfully employed as public defenders and city attorneys. Good luck finding a St Thomas grad (in a suit) at the Ramsey County Courthouse.
Aww Hamline. I still remember the time, at my clerkship in St. Paul, a public defender asked where I went to school. I politely answered that I went to U. Minnesota. He frowned at me and replied, "Oh. Well, I just went to Hamline, so I guess you'll have to speak slowly or something." The palpable resentment of his education and career path was disappointing.
So we'll attribute her character to Hamline, but not to the University of Michigan, (where she got her J.D.)?
Enjoy the cognitive dissonance.
Apparently T = TTTT, so TT wins.
77 - Perhaps your self-aggrandizement shielded you from the irony of his/her statement?
76 = bitter they didn't get in to the U, UST, or Billy Mitchell. Get out of small claims court and you'll see grads from the other 3 schools in the big kid courtrooms.
Agree with 79. I am T5 secure and don't like to pick on the little guy so I am sure how to handle 77. But I didn't realize that someone who went to U Minn. was in a position to be snobby towards anyone else.
HofstraMagna-
It's unfair that you had extra time on your tests just because of your ADD. Everyone at HofsTTTra has mental disabilities, but most other people didn't get extra time.
