Law Student of the Day: He Says He’s Not Dating Rihanna, But Everybody Thinks He Is

Janero Marchand Rihanna not dating.jpgFrom what we can tell, Janero Marchand was just your normal everyday law student. Well, a normal everyday law student who allegedly dated this woman.

Hey, the man likes fine clothes and fine women; there’s nothing wrong with that. But the gossip blog Bossip blew up his world this morning, when it made Marchand front page news:

According to our source, Rihanna has been spotted around town with a new man accompanying her by the name of Janero Marchand. 22 year old Janero is the former boyfriend of video chick Dollicia Bryan and is a current NYU Law Student. Janero, who wishes to stay out of the limelight, has been the missing link to Rihanna’s life; offering her love and support during her split with Chris Brown.

As the cops in a South Park episode might say, “nice … nice.”

There’s only one problem with the story, it’s not true.

Pesky, pesky details after the jump.

We’re still hoping to get in touch with Janero to clear all of this up. But as of now his twitter feed vehemently denies that he is dating Rihanna. These have been Janero’s tweets today:

P.S.A! I am NOT dating Rihanna she’s bangin though and I do NOT go to NYU (Georgetown) AND nor did I date @LuvDollicia THANKS!!!

How do you get your shyt taken off a blog? My shorty just called me whilin out on some made up story on a blog that is false.

Man Bossip be making up some bogus ass stories none of that is tru ya’ll it’s not EVEN a pic with me and Rihanna. Don’t believe it!

RT @LUVDOLLICIA WHY IS ALL THE BLOGS STORIES STARTING TO BE SO WHACK! (BOSSIP) I HAVE NEVER DATED @THISISJANERO WE HAVE ONLY WORKED 2GETHER!

Wow, Janero’s real girlfriend must be pissed. I wonder if she’s a GULC student too. If she reasonably relied on the Bossip story and then dumped Janero, she might have a claim under section 90 …

But could it all be a smokescreen? Our man at Popsquire reminds us of some recent Rihanna history:

Rihanna has always been super tight lipped about her relationships. She and Chris took a very long time to confirm they were dating.

Ah yes, Chris Brown. Last seen morphing into a human weed wacker as punishment for his outburst of violence. You know, if I was linked to dating Brown’s ex-girlfriend, I might deny the rumor and make people believe I went to a completely different law school too.

Until Janero speaks, we can’t know if the rumor is true. But ether way, he’s had a more exciting day than your average 1L.

This comment is addressed to post no. 35.

As you well know, I am not opposed to the concept of affirmative action, although I believe it may very well be outdated. Many "white" applicants whine and complain that a minority took their spot at a respectable school or job as a result of AA. These nimrods have only themselves to blame for not coming up with superior numbers to surmount the AA candidate. I happen to respect Howard law school, which I believe has placed more graduate(s) on the U.S. Supreme Court than Georgetown Law. Lastly, I don't discriminate on the basis of color. The only color I care about is green and if you are black, brown and bring me a lot of green, you are an asset to me. The moment a white or black associate is in the red, he/she is useless to me.

avatar
43 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, September 18, 2009 4:18 PM

42, why shouldn't the AA candidate come up with superior numbers to surmount the white applicant, instead of relying on institutional racism to give him a better playing field?

Elie, I usually just lol at comments and keep to myself. But, you can't say with a serious face that the lexicon used in the above-quoted messages is a result of shorthard based on the median of communication used.

One who does not say, "my shorty" in non-tweeting settings does not resort to such lexicon when tweeting. I also agree that speech should be governed by the setting, but I seriously doubt that someone that speaks in the manner quoted above can turn it off and churn out a Garner-type brief.

I just do not see it happening. It has nothing to do with race, but everything to do with being an idiot.

48 Posted by Partner Emeritus | Permalink Friday, September 18, 2009 4:28 PM

This comment is addressed to post no. 44.

AA is law. Deal with it as I have for many decades. If you don't want to lose a "spot" to a minority on the basis of AA, then don't be a marginal candidate. If you meet the bare minimum criteria, that may not be enough if you factor AA. If you don't want to fall "victim" to AA, go above the minimum criteria and be outstanding. I have no respect for anyone who says "I could have gone here or worked there had Leroy or Terrance not taken my spot." That line got stale real quickly. In the end, AA only helps so much. In the real world, AA is almost a non-factor.

Elie:

Sad to see that you fell for PE's "I am not opposed to the concept of affirmative action" hook, line and sinker. Paraphrasing the immortal words of Joe Wilson: "He Lies!" Earlier, PE wrote the following about President Obama:

"President Obama has no governing experience and his decisions thus far have proven that he is incompetent and unfit to lead this nation. His solution to the economic meltdown is to create print more money (which devalues our currency and creates super inflation) and throw money at the problem rather than formulate practical solutions. He appointed a tax scofflaw to engineer a solution to the current economic crisis. President Obama's impact on this nation is already being felt, just read the headlines. People are committing suicide because they are losing their jobs. Families are going hungry and businesses are closing shop as a result of Obama's oppressive tax strategies. And yes, I have lost money as a result of Obama and have had to layoff some workers who were undeserving of termination. Obama left me no choice."

Then he wrote that the reason for President Obama's "incompetence" is because of some idiotic notion that the President is the beneficiary of affirmative action:

"Obama is a product of affirmative action. He went to Harvard Law School based on that policy. What college did Obama transfer from before landing at Columbia? Let me hear it. "

PE may not be opposed to the "concept" of affirmative action, but he is certainly opposed to any perceived application of it, real, or in the case of President Obama, imagined.

The tweet is not appropriate, and it's not a racial or AA thing.

Using language and slang and terminology in his tweets is a poor choice if he is a law student. If this info is public, it's the same as having the class to not have any naked pictures of yourself on a public website. Just block your facebook or keep it PC.

He's officially a loser. He deserves to be mocked. However, it's not a race thing. It's a douchebag thing.

It would be reasonable to suspect PE is from S&C, given what he says in post 17. But since he's 19 and lives in his mother's basement, it's probably unlikely.

69 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, September 18, 2009 5:18 PM

PE got totally scared that Elie called him a racist and printed a retraction. That is the best part or all of this. You see the power such an accusation yields? I also did find the language in the tweet surprising for someone that is a law student. Does that make me racist?

I would also find it surprising for a G'Town student to Tweet something along the lines of a valley girl - "Like I am totally not dating Rihanna, as if ... She is super cool and all and I would totally but like I already have a BFF." Both forms of communication sound pretty ignorant and juvenile to me. That is kind of the point.

And what's wrong with using incorrect language in a tweet? There's clearly some latent racism here. People use bff, idk, lol, ya, i kno, and all other kinds of incorrect grammar, but since this guy uses language that is more associated with ebonics he is an idiot? Oh ok.

There are girls in law school that say like and um 50 million times, but are smart. Just as there are smart people who sometimes speak in ebonics. It's casual speaking people.

#47--actually you can turn it off and on and off and on and...you get the point.

It's called code switching and everybody does it. African Americans are the only ones who get called on it for some odd reason.

I think most would agree they use a different slang and vernacular when you speak to your friends, as opposed to your parents or at the bank. Hmmm. This guy has a different way of speaking to an online community than to his profs. Probably true.

I change the way I talk and the words I use depending on who I am talking to and I do it seamlessly because I've been doing it my whole life. I might be chatting with friends using lots of slang while I'm on hold for finaid and when I get on the phone with them its all business appropriate tones and word usage.

But more importantly, this guy does not go to GULC. There are definitely African-American male students (albeit few and far between) and he "ain't" one of them. ;-)

Naturally, I suppose that means that they should also be evaluated based on facebook posts and myspace pages too, except that not too long ago I remember many anti-AA people going out of their way to defend the head of the Young Republicans for some off-color remarks that she made on her facebook page. Again...interesting.

I personally don't require people be be internally consistent, but if we are going to raise the bar to the point where AA people can no longer use slang in their private lives, I think that racists should also be prohibited from using racially offensive language in their private lives.

Anti-AA people really amuse me. I totally understand self-interest and recognize that human beings are not altruistic by nature, but please, enough already. AA is the law (at least for now) so stop your bellyaching. Also, what world are you living in if you really believe that minorities are taking the spots of white Americans ANYWHERE? Positions of control and power across all professions and sectors in our country are overwhelming held by white people. Personally, I have never been in a class that was not at least 60% white. In a nation that is rapidly becoming more Latino/Hispanic than anything else, it seems to me that white people are actually overrepresented in positions of power.

Also, for those who would contend that Asians have somehow managed to avoid the ill effects of racism in this country...please name me 10 Asian CEOs of US Fortune 500 companies. How about 10 highly-respected and strategically placed managers? Or better, please name 10 Asian partners at your firm. Notice that I didn't ask you to name 10 Japanese partners or 10 Chinese partners, etc etc. You can pick from the whole continent. In any case, I bet you can't. What is even more appalling is that I bet you can't do it even in West Coast firms where a high % of the attorneys coming out of Boalt, UCLA, USC, etc are Asian.

So please, spare me the bogus discussion about "spots" being taken from Whites, cuz that dog simply won't hunt.

Elie, don't even bother responding to these racist assholes. They might be attorneys, but they're also backwood rednecks who, at the end of the day, can't get enough of your blog no matter how much shit they talk about you and any other black person they can get their pale, hillbilly hands on. WTF is a Partner Emeritus? Some shmuck who will never be successful, and who will indubitably blame his lack of success on minorities just because Glen Beck tells him to? A piece of blue collar trash who is soooo pleased with himself because he's in law school now and he thinks he's "playing with the big boys now"? Some rich piece of crap who doesn't take law school/his job/his life seriously, and spends DAY AFTER DAY on this site giving voice to an AVATAR? Please. Keep it moving, Elie, and keep doing what you do. All your other black readers will continue to do the same, all the constant hate on this site notwithstanding...
