Nobody Puts Baby Sonia Sotomayor in a Corner

Sonia Sotomayor on the dancefloor.jpgJust last week SCOTUS Justice Sonia Sotomayor was spotted cutting a rug at the Irish Channel Pub in Washington, D.C.’s Chinatown. This week, she’s on the dance floor again, but this time the location is a bit more upscale.

From the Reliable Source at the Washington Post:

The annual gala of the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts is known for drawing the stars — but a D.C. luminary outshone the Hollywood kind Tuesday night. Justice Sonia Sotomayor would have been the belle of the ball even if she had never left her table, so the room exploded when actor Esai Morales pulled the Supreme Court’s first Latino member onto the dance floor for an impressively confident salsa.

See the dance video, and the other legal stars at the party, after the jump.

We wouldn’t echo the Reliable Source in calling her salsa “impressively confident.” But if she looks a little awkward, her healing ankle may be to blame.

In addition to the dancing, Sotomayor mingled with TV legal star Jimmy Smits of L.A. Law. Check out other photos from the party at Washington Life Magazine’s website.

Justice Cardozo was the first Hispanic justice, not Sotomayor. ATL's obsession with Sotomayor is just that, an obsession. Curb it already, we don't care.

I suppose I should know the answer to this, but is Sonya Sotomayor accredited by the National Hispanic Foundation as a member in good standing of the hispanic race?

Great work ATL! Fascinating scoop exposing Justice Sotomayor as an actual person. Please also report on any incidents of her driving, shopping, walking, or eating.

We should really be talking about Esai Morales - he gave one of the finest performances in cinema history as Ritchie Valens's brother, Bob Morales, in the wonderful film La Bamba.

16 - Based on your comment, I am assuming you are not very into salsa dancing.

Mambo music is orginally from Cuba (and continued in large part in the US) and the type of dance that was originally "mambo" was significantly different than any modern form of salsa (on 1, "on 2", west coast, etc.)

Some people simply think mambo is another way of saying salsa, and I guess that is really the most modern usage of the word "mambo".

However, they are dancing a form of salsa that is popular in several Latin American countries including most of South America and the Caribbean. That is, they dance salsa side to side with few spins.

Most US salsa dancing is forward-backward with more technical moves and lots of spinning. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amO1sDZlrkI ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44CdHOJtZAU

To clarify, when I say "However, *they* are dancing a form of salsa..." I am referring to Sotomayor and Morales.

Looking at Justice Sotomayor, I am reminded of our great song "Big Bottoms." The bigger the cushion, the deeper the pushin', you know what I mean.
