Musical Chairs: Former FCC Chairman Reed Hundt Joins Skadden
Reed E. Hundt, who served as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission from 1993 to 1997, will be joining Skadden Arps. He most recently served as a senior advisor on information industries to McKinsey & Company, the elite consulting firm. (For a more detailed description of Reed Hundt’s illustrious career — Yale College ‘69, Yale Law School ‘74, partnership at Latham & Watkins, etc. — see the biography on his personal website.)
Hundt made the announcement this morning at the YLS alumni reunion, where he was serving on a panel on the regulatory process. Professor Thomas Merrill, moderator of the panel, introduced Hundt as a senior adviser to McKinsey. Hundt interjected to note that he’s moving to Skadden — and joked that this was a good opportunity to plug his new practice. He didn’t specify which office he’ll be based out of, but we’re assuming D.C.
It doesn’t seem that the move was public before this morning (at least based on Google News, a search of the Skadden website, and a search of Law.com). But it is now.
Congratulations and good luck, Chairman Hundt!

FIRSTY McFIRSTERSON!
What does this have to do with gay marriage?
gee, i wonder why he didn't go back to Latham

I can only wonder why this guy isn't rolling with Bob and Dave right now.
The Big Hundt is a fun bar in DC.
#2 nailed it
Let me be clear, this is yet another job created by my stimulus plan.
SA sucks big time, period.
Two Yale degrees and the highest this guy ever got was Chairman of the FCC?
That wouldn't even make the back pages of the alumni news publication at Hofstra Law.
I've worked over the years with several SA partners on the litigation side. They were jerks of the first order. The also were lousy attorneys to boot. They seemed to think that bluster somehow would win out in the end, even with going against the real deals. I've never been able to understand how those guys survive, being that they suck so much at being attorneys.
10,
They bring in business. The legal profession isnt about how good of a lawyer you are. It's about how good you are at convincing clients to pay outrageous fees for your "expertise."
In my experience, the best lawyers in any firm are the service partners and the special counsels. They don't bring in as much business as the rainmakers, but they are around for a very important purpose - they actually know what they are doing.
I echo 3's question, although I seem to recall that folks were happy when Reed went to the FCC. The question for me is how he will work with Toni, who has a reputation for being a bit to shrill.
7 quite clearly is an imposter. My administration has never "saved or created" a job as highly paid as a Skadden partnership. But rest assured, I have a shovel ready for Mr. Hundt once I create a shovel ready job for him.
Barack x.
Maybe this will revive the howling nightmare that is Skadden DC. It's not like morale could be any lower after the cutback to 125K.
If florida fumbles the ball one more damn time....
-Fixing to lose a lot of money
Reed, this is Bob Dell, why won't you return my calls?
10 -- They may have been major jerks to you because you can't spell and use fragmented sentences.
13 - Now let me be clear. Ordinarily, my administration is not concerned about jobs for the wealthiest Americans. However, many former Skadden partners who worked tirelessly on my campaign are now part of my administration. No doubt, because of my stimulus plan, at least one of those jobs was saved for Mr. Hundt. Thus, my plan is responsible for yet another saved job.
Nice icon, but the 3rd-best Obama shtick on this site is a dubious honor.
17 - I didn't see any spelling errors and the sentences look fine to me. You have issues.
- Not 10
As a Seattle business lawyer with dealings and holdings in various telecom co's, I believe the FCC experience he brings to the table will be extremely helpful to folks.
Sometimes the Yale guys don't make very good regulators, but they tend to kick butt once they get back into the 'real' world of lawyering. As a business lawyer in Seattle I see this often from Yale-ies.
First to say "who cares." Typical Lat post.
23 - You wouldn't recognize real news if it came up and bit you in the ass.
@11 - I agree, the lawyers in the regulatory service practices (tax, benefits, antitrust) have to be excellent. You make partner understanding that shit, you know your stuff. You may be weird and the corporate lawyers may not let you talk to clients, but they respect and value you as lawyers.
19 - Let me be clear. If you like your current Obama shticks, you can keep your current Obama shticks. No one is going to take them away from you.
Under this man's leadership, the FCC prohibited radio play of "Bitch School," thus ensuring that it would never rise to its rightful place at the top of the Billboard Chart.
I therefore celebrate his transition to private practice, and wish him the best of luck.
It's Sunday at 8:30am my time. I have completed more in the 3 hours I have been at work than you do all weekend.
Get to work, schlubs.
Lat,
You lost me at illustrious career and Latham within two sentences. The real men are jumping ship and only the rats of new york stay on board.
Skadden's DC is one big orgy
If Latham is a TTT that lays off half the first years four months in, then is this guy also a TTT?

31,
No, because he's at Skadden now.
14 - I thought SkaddenDC laid off all of their employees and therefore it wouldn't matter if they cut salary? Wait a minute . . . is it possible that people would intentionally post incorrect information on a gossip blog because they got rejected from a firm? Nah, that wouldn't happen. Lawyers / law students are much more mature than that . . .

Skadden DC is no Latham NY.
You still work on the weekend to make money? What a peon.
