First to say Peace.

Elie : HLS :: Barack : Nobel Peace Prize
I guess there is no overlap between the memberships of the International Olympic and the Nobel Prize Committees, or is the Nobel Prize given in consolation for the Olympic smackdown?
It's official. The Nobel Peace Prize is a joke.
"I think" - there is your mistake Elie. Don't think. You're a fucking idiot.
Wait a minute! I freed Afghanistan from the clutches of the Taliban and liberated Iraq. Doesn't that count for something?
I can only assume he will win the Nobel Prize for Economics next.
He absolutely deserves it and frankly it is a hell of an honor.
You'd think even dumb conservatives would appreciate the award, but no. First thing in the morning they have to bitch and moan.
Typical for a group who vote for a president whose idea of International diplomacy was to look like a fool while talking to more intelligent world leaders and ducking out of the way when shoes were thrown at him.
10- No he won't. That award is left for trailer trash like you to win. Right? After all only you understand economics.
12 - lulzwut?
7&8 tie FTW
But how can he win the peace prize? he's trying to set up death panels to kill my grandmother?
Now where is my swastika, gun and "Nazi" banner. I have to go to that foreign country and protest outside their town halls.
Er..does anyone know if they have town halls in..er..there...
11 - help me out: He deserves it for doing _____________.
Nobel peace prize now = Sux Award
there's also a large cash award associated with the prize. Sitting U.S. President accepting cash from foreign group=unseemly.
16 - for not being George W. Bush. A lot of people weren't George W. Bush this year, but Hussein Obama did it best.
A Nobel? For which great achievement?
Then again, if Arafat or Carter could get it, why not?
11--So you think it would have been better international diplomacy to stand there and take a shoe in the forehead? Turn the other cheek philosophy of international relations?
His pay czar is going to be all over his ass for getting a big cash payment without showing actual results.
22 - pay czar policies do not apply to members of the party.
22 - no, gods still outrank czars
he shafted the Poles and he gets an award? i do not heart europeans.
I don't know if Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. But I do know that to be an effective government official, you need to be getting sex on a regular basis from an attractive call girl.
Former Governor of New York
CNN picked the 50 best careers based on great pay, superior growth prospects, and work that's meaningful. Attorney is #18, so the shortage of attorneys as compared to available positions must be getting dire. Hopefully people will see this and be encouraged to go to law school.
There should be a nobel prize in law.
What, pray tell, has Barack done to deserve this award? He ran a presidential campaign all of 2008, made a couple of self-serving speeches in Europe during that period about HopeNChange, and then he went to Egypt and Latin America to apologize during 2009. How is this strengthening international peace to the level that he needs a fucking Nobel Peace Prize? Are we talking about the same guy that called out a white cop for *gasp* arresting someone who happened to be black? The same guy that told Israel to go fuck itself and to give Palestine what it wanted (why the Jews ever voted for him, I'll never know--this was always going to happen)? The same guy who has made Afghanistan WORSE? The same guy that is attempting to re-install a communist dictator who attempted to make a power grab yet was ousted under the authority of that nation's constitution? The same guy that continues to ignore Darfur?
I might deserve a Nobel Peace Prize, too--I didn't tell this Indian cashier how much he fucking smelled the other day, and I think that promoted "international peace."
Ladies and gentlemen, you're looking at the personification of the me-first pussy child that was created by the "poor me" baby boomers that weren't hugged enough. He needs constant attention and reinforcement as to how awesome he is. Well, Mr. President, here's your gold star for...well....being the first black president?
And to all of you starry-eyed liberals following him with blind devotion, this pithy stream of consciousness is not based in conservatism, but common sense. Here's another instance where he is vastly under-qualified for something, and yet he receives it anyway. That breeds a certain type of ego in a person--one so sensitive he can't stand it if the media deviates one step from complete adoration (look at CNN/Slate). We don't need hubris. G.W. had the same type of ego problem, but the media kept him in check, for the most part. They exposed him as a bumbling, ideologically incoherent hayseed. Why the media won't provide us with the same service with Barack is beyond me. Ya, he talks real pretty, but I think it would be even easier to expose BO. If GW had hung out with Klan members, anti-abortion clinic bombers, and racist preachers, he probably wouldn't have even made it past New Hampshire, let alone win a fucking Nobel Peace Prize. BO needs to have this ego crushed. He needs to start working for us with some humility instead of having everyone tell him that his shit (1) doesn't stink, (2) promotes world peace, and (3) is an inspirational story about how a Negro in racist American can still successfully digest food.
Who won the Nobel Prize in Warmongering this year? Cheney again?
I would like to thank those of you on this blog who support my being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for my accomplishments in pacifying the world. And to those of you who have expressed doubts regarding my accomplishments, I reach out my open hand if you will unclench your fists. For those of you who asked what I have achieved, I forgive you your cynicism. My achievement -- the removal of the global plague of free markets. Nothing has caused more strife than the desire for profit. I have freed the world from that. Please, everybody on this blog, hold hands and empty your pockets.
Barack x
29- you are so right. I mean, I stopped reading after line 2...but anyways....
Plus I think these wierd liberals are so..you know...wierd. They are cheering because a Kenyan man has won the Nobel peace prize. How...what is the word...unpatriotic.
But call me, let us bond over how much it sucks to not have a job AND to see these foreigners win awards AND to see these liberals winning elections...
29: your multi-paragraph rambling (trolling?) is anything but "pithy."
@30 Obama is a worthy opponent. Politics aside, what definition of peace includes dropping missiles from space on villages in Afghanistan?
This is post-election Obama-mania all continuing...
On the path he headed - he may be worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize someday, but has he really done enough in his (almost) 10 months in office to earn big prize ? Next he'll win an Oscar for playing the President.
And why am I getting "Phishing Warning(s)" on this site ? Elie - chop-chop and figure this out.
All of you people who are taking this as an opportunity to crap on Obama, just remember, he didn't give the award to himself. FFS.
32 = FAIL
37= It takes one to know.
It appears that in modern times, all that's needed to get the nobel peace prize is being a far-left American politician.
Just think, the two worst Presidents of last 100 years have also won the Nobel Peace Prize, and for what? They both hate the America that is, prefering to remake America into something unrecognizable.
11 - I'm not conservative and I think it's absurd that Obama was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. Did he end a war like Teddy Roosevelt? Did he start the League of Nations and outline the basis of the German surrender after the Great War, like Woodrow Wilson? Did he negotiate a Middle East peace treaty like Jimmy Carter? All he did was get elected and not be George Bush. How about you wait until he actually accomplishes something before awarding him a Nobel?
If that's the best option they had to award a Nobel Peace Prize, that says something very sad for the state of peace in the world today.
40 - GW Bush didn't win a nobel peace prize. I think you're confused.
41- Did he end a war? Yes, I think he's trying his damnest to do so...and succeeding.
Did he negotiate a peace treaty in the Middle East? Yes again.
I agree with the last sentence of yours though. It's a fair comment.
haha - all you obama haters (who also, btw, hate america) can suck it!
39- Do you even understand what "Far Left" means? National Health Care is about as "far left" as "death panels"....ofcourse if you said he was a foreigner and did not deserve to be our President...then....
I'm an Obama supporter and I don't understand this at all -- its way too soon to award anything.
Also: @ 20: Carter deserved the award, not for his actions as president, but his humanatarian efforts as a former president -- he left office in 81 and won the award in 02 after all.
It is remarkably funny that Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize at approximately the same time that the United States is bombing the moon.
Yeah, the Dr. Phil thing is funny to.
http://www.dickipedia.org/dick.php?title=Dr._Phil_McGraw
Let's not lose focus, people: Elie is a retard. And fat. A fat retard who deserves the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Q: Why didn't Obama win the Nobel Prize for Literature?
A: Because he wrote 2 books.
If you are pro Obama, you just have to hate this crap. Carter, Gore and now Obama in a seven year time period? Ok, we get it, the committee doesn't like Bush. Thanks for completely destroying any semblance of what could have been a worthwhile exercise!
Nobel Committee = PAC
26 -- Concept has potential, but you are not funny. Really not funny.
50, well said.
Seriously, in terms of accomplishments, it's wholly premature. But, I think most of you don't get the reactions, justified or not, of people around the world to his election and his campaign themes. It's pretty major. I think they know and appreciate that he will attempt to govern as center-left technocrat, like an Angela Merkel of British Conservative, but its not his politics that won the prize.
Likewise, I think much of you, especially those who never left the country except to go to the airport McDonald's in Heathtrow and then on to your document warehouse, don't get how much damage his predecessor did to the image of the country and stability in the world. So, yes, this is another hearty f*ck you to George W. Bush from the world at large. In a way, this bizarre result is due to the distorting fail-field W still radiates.
I didn't know the Nobel Peace Prize had an affirmative action program...
Barack to Hillary: "So you won a grammy -- how very impressive for you. I heard Kathy Griffin was nominated for one, too. Did you see what I won?"
I will state the most important question...
How is this legal news Mystal?
If you want to start a hack liberal political blog be my guest. But don't use this forum on law firms and legal news to shove your liberal nonsense in our face.
Go away.
This is going to hurt BHO and the dems domestically.
2010 is looking good for the GOP!
41-- That League of Nations nonsense formed the basis of WW II. Wilson is nudged only by Carter and Coolidge as the worst Presidents of the 20th century.
"He absolutely deserves it and frankly it is a hell of an honor.
You'd think even dumb conservatives would appreciate the award, but no. First thing in the morning they have to bitch and moan."
Yeah conservatives should appreciate the Nobel War prize, seeing that it was founded by the man who was a massive arms dealer and invented dynamite. As such it is fitting that the prize has been awarded to war mongers like W. Wilson, Teddy Roosevelt, and Elihu Root (by the way, these guys were leftists too).
Obama, has done nothing to promote peace, or as Nobel's will said promote the ending of standing armies, especially in light of his predator drone escalation in AfPak and his cowardice on ending the Iraq war.
By the way, as the famous Marine Smedley Butler rightly lamented, War is a Racket, to Hell with War.
One consistently wonders. Why do liberals care so much about how Europeans view them? The work ethic genes were bred out of europeans via the flight to America years ago thus how "they" view us is purely inconsequential to this poster, notwithstanding what New York Pravda thinks.
54- It doesn't. However, the day they start one for retards, you will be near the start of a long line.
@56: Really?
Lawyer wins Nobel Peace prize, and you think it should be left of the site?
53-- GWB gave a hearty F U to europeans as well he should. Other than begging us to bail them out of war after war, they're wholly deserving of many "eff yous".
In order to win this year's Nobel Peace Prize, you have to be nominated before February 1, 2009. What the hell did Obama do in the first two weeks of his presidency to warrant a nomination, let alone the ultimate prize?!?!
I have a feeling the Nobel Prize committee was going to award this to Obama anyway and figured this is the best Obama was going to do in his entire presidency. Guess they had to award it now while he is still "legitimate."
The award should have gone to Obama's teleprompter, but I think they have rules about nominating inanimate objects - hence why the dildo has never received an award for promoting peace.
When those Nobel bastards finally decide to honor an individual's gravitational pull, Elie will at long last get the recognition that he deserves.
Conservative whiners - read 53 above.
It's the best take on why Obama won the peace prize I've read, and I'd like to hear your reply.
The nomination process ended on Obama's 11th day in office. That pretty much debunks any argument about this being on the merits.
I'm. Confused.
53 - are you saying that Angela Merkel is a British Conservative or that she is a center-left technocrat? either way, sounds like you're very confused.
68 - Here is my reply:
I would rather have this country run by a bad President (liberal , conservative, whatever) then have the Europeans tell us what to do. I don't care what the Europeans think about the leaders we elect. We don't get a say in their choices and they don't get a say in ours.
There was a European man once who wanted to run the world (America included). He was killed by the Bear Jew.
Was 53 making an argument 68? McDonalds at Heathrow bad, anyone but Bush good?
68: here's my take on that post:
1. learn how to write in English;
2. express righteous anti-Bush indignation;
3...
4. PROFIT!
God, I love watching conservatives collectively crapping their pants over this. Oh well, gotta get some popcorn ready and watch all the "newspeople" on Fox have aneurysms.
BREAKING NEWS: Obama wins Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, Navy Cross, Conn Smythe trophy and Budweiser's "Real Men of Genius" awards.
why you obama zombies insist on couching the debate as how the random european feels about us instead of how the random american feels about them is beyond me.
Europeans are not our masters. What some dicksock in Bruges thinks about me or my President matters less to me than the team ERA of the Newark Bears.
72 -- How you feel about the opinions of Europeans, I feel about the opinions of Southerners.
53 & 68 - so you are saying that Barry Hussein should win the Nobel Peace Prize for BEING ELECTED? You are an ignorant fool.
Besides the fact that the credibility of this award went out the window when it was awarded to Yasser Arafat.
Who won the Nobel in Document Review?
How did Bret Favre not win this award?
54=bigot!
71, the CDU is center-left in the US poltical spectrum. "of" is obviously a typo. Kopiert?
reaction in the middle east (the only place where it arguably counts) is mixed.
http://www.reuters.com/article/GCA-BarackObama/idUSTRE5982O920091009?virtualBrandChannel=11621
63 - an Americans are equally deserving of "eff yous" from Europeans...and much of the world.
The problem with Americans is that they are wholy unable to see how the rest of the world sees them. Either that or they don't think it matters. I'm not sure which is worse.
The point is, Obama represents American leadership attempting to reverse this prejudiced view in the U.S. That's why he's worthy of recognition. I'm not sure if he'll be successful, but he has a unique opportunity to bring America, Europe and Asia together- and that's a HUGE step towards the promotion of peace in the wake of GWB's actions on the world stage.
Who won the nobel in Snarky Blogging?
I spent 3 months traveling Europe and noticed one consistent element among Europeans. They worship our culture. Obama is nothing more than a cultural symbol that has caught on. He is a pop icon, he is a name brand.
Who won the Nobel in Layoffs?
How did Sarah Palin not win this award?
85- Conservatives have been to Europe too. Great place to visit, wouldn't want to live there.
Who won the nobel in baliouts?
How did Glen Beck not win this award?
85: "The problem with Americans is that they are wholy unable to see how the rest of the world sees them. Either that or they don't think it matters."
It's the latter. The world's opinion matters only to the extent it bears a relationship to America's goals. Being liked is not, in and of itself, a goal - unless you are a complete fucking pussy.
Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran.
Obama has just one-upped John F. Kennedy in the department of "Cool Things To Have On Your Desk in the Oval Office." A Pultizer is pretty cool, but a Nobel? Way, way cooler.
(Makes you wonder what Reagan would have done if he'd ever gotten an Oscar, doesn't it?)
Hod did Dr. Phil not win the Peace Prize?
As someone who has actually lived in several countries for 1 to 2 year-long stints since the mid 90s, I can tell you that Obama has made a tremendous change in the image of the United States in the international community. During the Bush years, everyone, even in the West, was terrified of terrorists, America, or the uncertainty facing the world. Even if Obama has yet to achieve anything great, he has still changed the image of America and eased the fears of the entire world.
97--Except for, inter alia, Poland (but Poland never counted to you liberals did it).
@49 - I see what you did there...
83: link to CDU being considered center-left by anyone? dummkopf.
"[H]e has still... eased the fears of the entire world."
I sure hope that's not the case. If it is, the world is full of idiots. Obama has done absolutely nothing to improve international security or reduce the possibility of conflict. Period. Nothing. Moreover, he is correctly viewed by Iran and North Korea as a naive "rid-the-world-of-weapons" sissy.
Obama speaks softly, but the only big stick he carries is in his boxers. (I'm implying that like many African Americans, he has a large penis).
53/68 - he was nominated within 3 weeks of being crowned by liberal America despite any accomplishment other than being elected and making tremendously popular speeches to European mobs. By that measure, the Beatles should have won, along with Elivs, Michael Jackson and many others. This is s joke.
Oh, and he also demonstrated the wonderful efficacy of extending an open hand to Iran, by being blindsided by the fact that they've been building a second nuke production plant all along. Sure, it started under Bush, but why wouldn't it, when the writing was on the wall that an appeaser was on his way into office.
What, no Kanye joke yet?
Barak - I'm happy for you and all, but...
85, 97 et al - those are unquestionably great accomplishments but they don't equate to making peace. One could argue that they are actually not the president's accomplishments but accomplishments of the American people for electing Obama. Changing foreign opinions is tremendous but it doesn't mean that Obama made peace.
Awards are unimportant -- Fox News turns down countless journalism awards for that reason.
and 104 -- you are correct, that was a major oversight.
Did Barack win this award for smoking a peace pipe when he was in high school?
@103 - did it say "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN?"
Ok, everyone, in your best Tom Cruise from Tropic Thunder voice (directed toward Europeans):
"Go phuc yourself!"
100, the idea that EU conservative parties are in any way to the right of the US democratic party is risible.
If you would like citations, here you go:
see, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/10/03/AR2009100301388.html.
"Much of the answer lies in the nature of modern European politics, where even the most ardent conservatives can still embrace social welfare policies that would seem leftist to Americans. And in recent years, European center-right parties have mastered a certain political alchemy in co-opting some of the left's best ideas."
see also http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/29/world/europe/29socialism.html
"Europe’s center-right parties have embraced many ideas of the left: generous welfare benefits, nationalized health care, sharp restrictions on carbon emissions, the ceding of some sovereignty to the European Union. But they have won votes by promising to deliver more efficiently than the left, while working to lower taxes, improve financial regulation, and grapple with aging populations."
Zufrieden?
Europeans instigated the Triangular Trade. They could give a Nobel to every brother on 125th Street and it wouldn't ameliorate the evil they inflicted on the black man. Europeans are hypocrites of the lowest caliber. Why don't they elect their own black guy, those racists.
@ 103: The Second nucleur plant was billed while Bush was the President.
Leave it at that and try not to sound too stupid with the next sentnce. Oops, too late.
So Did the Iranians know in advance that Palin was not going to win the election? Or were they just smarter than you?
112 - It's spelled "nuclear." However, as everyone knows, it's pronounced NUKE-ular.
Obama for Heisman!!!
114 - Bullshit, give him the Conn Smythe instead.
115 - don't be silly, the playoffs haven't even started yet. Give him the Hart Trophy.
@115, 116 - seems like he's in line for the Lady Byng more than anything else.
Love the Poland flames of 98 et al. - like the conservatives have ever given a damn about Poland...
So Obama scraps the GW Bush brainchild -- an insanely expensive, non-functional missile defense system aimed at the non-existent threat of nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles from Iran, and in exchange provides Poland with existing, working missile defense technology (the Patriot system) that is capable of defending against the existing missile threat from Iran (short and intermediate range missiles). In the process, Obama greatly improves US-Russia relations and forces Russia to the negotiation table for the renewal of the Start 1 non-proliferation treaty.
If you don't see the benefits to this, you're as dumb as Dubya.
93 FTW.
American presidents should promote America's interests. An American president who is simply admired internationally does not, in and of itself, promote America's interests. Those interests are served only after the world's fandom translates into American progress.
This it has failed to do. Until then, it doesn't mean a thing.
117 - Yes, fair point. Maybe we should start calling him the Great One. Or the Wayner.
- 116
112 - Palin could see Iran from her bedroom window, so she had complete control over the situation. As soon as she was sworn in as vice president, she would have sent in the Alaskan National Guard to deal with the situation and teach them Iraninnians a lesson. You betcha.
Hey 95: I disagree, what about Marilyn Monroe....
based on their senate voting records, Al Gore and Obama were two of the most liberal-voting senators. regardless of any opinions of their policy stances, this makes them "far-left."
To be fail, Obama accomplished a hell of a lot during his first twelve days in office.
For outstanding achievement in the Field of Lulz, I nominate the Nobel Peace Price Committee, for giving someone the Nobel Peace Prize for doing...absolutely nothing, thereby cheapening one of the most universally recognized symbols of excellence in the history of humanity.
Way to troll, Nobel Committee. Way to troll.
Too many have stewed in their hatred of Bush so much as to be blind. Obama is a false messiah.
112 - you are a fricking moron. You spell nuclear wrong and use "billed" because in your tiny pea-sized brain it sounds like "built" and then you accuse me of sounding stupid?
And what, you think the rest of the world was not waiting by to see the results of the election, and taking into account the "change" that would come? (and by change, of course, I mean apologizing to the muslim world and selling out Israel).
Keep your ignorant trap shut.
As someone who has actually lived overseas for years, as opposed to some of the prior people who are treating their spring break in Cancun as international experience, America-hating did not begin with Bush, or have you forgotten that terrorist acts against Americans go back at least to the 70's. There has been anti-American sentiment as long as the United States has been a super power. Anyone who puts the blame for this on Bush is ignorant of the facts.

So the award comes with a million bucks? Perhaps he could donate the money to ACORN, to really make Limbaugh & Co.'s heads spin.
The Nobel Peace Prize has been something of a "joke" for quite a while now, in the sense that the selection process has long been criticized on the grounds that it is overtly politicized. Regardless of how you feel about President Obama becoming the 2009 laureate, it is hard to look at the historical roster of laureates and not scratch your head. To wit: Anwar Sadat (1978), Mikhail Gorbachev (1990) and Yitzhak Rabin/ Yasser Arafat (1994). Not exactly controversy free recipients.
I roughly analogize the Nobel Peace Prize to the Heisman. Each is given out annually on the basis of a highly politicized and controversial nomination and selection process. While literally dozens of perfectly deserving candidates exist each year, each award inevitably finds it way into the hands of a high-profile "star" candidate from an "elite" program. Sure, a guy who humbly risks his life clearing minefields in some desolate warzone in an attempt to save the lives of impoverished children deserves recognition for his selfless actions - just as a lightning quick 190 pound running back from a non-BCS conference who rushes for 2,000 yards and 20 TDs while single-handedly carrying his modestly talented team to a top 25 ranking and a bowl victory probably deserves to receive a big shiny trophy in New York. And yet, the Nobel inevitably winds up in the hands of a former world leader or bureocrat, and the Heisman goes to a QB or tailback from a national title caliber "Big 6" program. In short, it is all a little silly - just hairless apes in a nordic country giving another hairless ape an arbitrary award, plus a bunch of cash (the massive cash prize part has never quite made any sense to me - "Congrats, you sir/madam, are a great humanitarian, and as such, you deserve a cool medal and ONE MILLION DOLLARS!!). In the end, you have a two processes that saw fit to honor Jimmy Carter and Reggie Bush, but neither Mahatma Gandhi nor Vince Young. Huh?
Giving the 2009 Nobel to President Obama seems a bit like giving the 2010 Heisman to Matt Barkeley (the current USC wunderkind QB). The argument would be something like this: "Sure, he is just a freshman, and his numbers don't really compare to the other eligible QBs, but (1) he is tall and blond and incredibly talented and just looks and act like a real winner, (2) he recovered from an early injury and led a resurgent young USC team to a very respectable 10-2 record and a win in a consolation prize BCS bowl, and (3) he is presumably only going to get better in the coming years, so we might as well give him the hardware now, on the theory that such early adoration and recognition will only spur him on to greater heights as his career progresses." I am not sure I buy that argument, and if I was (a) Colt McCoy or (b) one of the multitudes of people around the world who toil in relative anonimity for the betterment of their fellow human beings, I suppose I would be pretty pissed off about it.
The sheer volume of additional analogies that might be made involving Nobel prize winners and gratuitous college football awards is making my head hurt, so I have to stop now.
Thanks for the insight 131
LOL @ 131:
Matt Barkley = Barack Obama
Colt McCoy = a guy who humbly risks his life clearing minefields in some desolate warzone.
What would Eric Decker be in this scenario?
131 -- I don't have the attention span to read your whole post -- but there are not "literally dozens of perfectly deserving candidates" each year for the Heisman. Don't shit on the Heisman by comparing it to the Nobel Peace Prize.
132: Totally welcome.
Personally, I think President Obama deserves the international humanitarian equivalents of the Maxwell, and possibly the Walter Camp, but not the Heisman.
Is he worthy of being named to a unanimous AP all north american continent team? I would say yes. Is he the western hemisphere's humanitarian leader of the year? Possibly. Is there a first-world political equivalent of the Johny Unitas Golden Arm award? I honestly don't know - but if so, he would have to be on the watch list. Is the United Nations the global equivalent of the Touchdown Club of Columbus? These are all valid questions.
93 and 119:
Absolutely, American presidents should promote America's interests. My argument is that America's interests are better promoted when the rest of the world likes us, respects our leadership, and is therefore more willing to work with us to make us happy. Europe and Asia have powerful players that can make life ugly for us if we don't act shrewdly. Gone are the days of America (or any other power) taking action unilaterally without consequences.
Also, do you walk into a negotiation with opposing counsel and say "fuck you" to start things? Does that serve your client's interests? Or is it a better strategy to be polite and friendly to your opponent before you sit down at the table?
Whether conservatives like it or not, every leadership decision- political, economic or otherwise- has international implications. Barry will better serve us because he gets that. Its best to work with others, not against them, to further your own interests.
-85
Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, now BH Obama - history does indeed repeat itself as farce.
127- but you *do* sound stupid. "Selling out Israel." Stupidity confirmed.
-not 112
Is Colt McCoy still dating that incredible blonde?
127- But I cannot help it. You are pretty stupid.
There is a difference between typos on a hastily scribbled post and just sounding...you know....plain stupid.
I'm the former and you're the latter. And no, I am not planning to keep my trap shut you dumb fuck.
112
Can I get a conservative to agree with me that Carter was a legitimate recipient of the prize? He won for two decades work with the Carter Center -- big difference between Gore, Obama and him. I'm talking to you 137.
141-
Card-carrying Republican here. Jimmy Carter deserved the Nobel Peace Prize for his work as a private citizen, which was extensive. Personally, I think he deserves more accolades for his work with Habitat for Humanity, which effectively combines charitable assistance with personal accountability--proof you can combine those two elements successfully.
BHO, however, is just like Jimmy Carter in that he is probably a great private individual, but a terrible president. I don't doubt he's sincere, and that he wants to do what's best. However, BHO, just like Carter did, believes that he can make anything happen that he wants to, and he has a profound ignorance of the way economies and international relations work.
To preemptively address your counterargument about his diplomatic efficacy, I have one salient example, (not) coincidentally occurring in Afghanistan. Jimmy, in a show of love/support to the Muslim world, funded an upstart guerrilla group named Al Qaeda in Afghanistan headed by a dynamic young revolutionary--Osama bin Laden--to fight off the Soviets. He pumped in money, arms and CIA operatives. And in return for all of our help, what did Al Qaeda/Afghanistan do for (to) us? Just because your enemies are nicer to your face when you give them exactly what they want doesn't mean they still aren't figuring out ways to take you down. Perhaps you remember a tragically wrong PM shouting in 1939: "Peace in our time!"
136,
While I agree with most of what you have to say, you're overlooking one minor detail: results. I'm OK with concessions as long as America gets something valuable in return.
Instead, Obama dropped the missile shield to strengthen Russian ties in exchange for...? Obama is willing to speak directly with the nuclear-bomb-making Iranians without preconditions in exchange for...? Obama wielded his international good will in front of the IOC in exchange for...(fail)? Obama sided with a Honduran totalitarian in exchange for...? Obama went on a whirlwind tour of the Middle East apologizing for, er, acknowledging American hegemonic dominanace in exchange for...?
What do we have to show for it? Unless he can turn international good will into negotiating leverage and serve American interests, then it's all for not, and actually serves to undermine American standing.
Let's be honest. This award has a two-fold purpose: 1) to repudiate Bush; and 2) to handcuff Obama. The committee has not rewarded Obama for any achievement (let's be honest, there aren't any), but to encourage his center-left "efforts" (that's the word actually used by the committee) which are more in line with the world view of the European welfare state and run counter to American exceptionalism.

I understand your concern about results. My response is, be patient. Nothing Obama has done on the international stage has hurt U.S. security. How has "American standing" been undermined here?
I could say the same about conserative efforts over the last few decades. Trickle-down economics? Don't see many beneficial results to that. Unregulated free market principles? Fail. Imposing our military will in Iraq and Aftghanistan? Fail and fail.
You also lost me at "American exceptionalism." I'm no America-hating liberal, but I tend to see little difference between Europe and America since the end of WWII as far as economic and political power is concerned. The U.S. is on top simply because it has more resources and didn't have a land war that devastated most of its economies.
The award is there to encourage peace-making behavior. If repudiating Bush's policies is part of that, so be it. No U.S. President is going to be handcuffed by the Nobel Committee.

53 - That's what I'll never get about you fucking liberals. You place so much emphasis on how our country is perceived abroad, when in reality the majority of those "abroad" would love nothing more than to cut your, and what is much, much worse - my - fucking head off. Were you deprived of oxygen at birth? I actually prefer our leader NOT to be held in high regard by a majority of countries abroad or their leaders - this means he's actually doing his job to protect us and our interests. Why do so many abroad love Obama? The same reason Hamas endorsed him in 2008 - they know he won't do shit in response to any actions they may take to harm us or our allies. Your theory of diplomacy, which places you, and unfortunately me, in harms way, defies explanation. The good news is that Americans are generally a tough people who can sniff out the scum-sucking vermin who want to harm it... Sooner or later, your insanely self destructive philosophy of diplomacy and economics will be eliminated from the shores of this great nation..... something's gotta give.
Obama absolutely deserves it. According to Pitchfork, he was instrumental in negotiating the Pavement reunion.
Right. Even if "peace" is really just a euphemism for "appeasement" and we are being marched over the side of a cliff.
"It's OK little Tommy. I know Al Qaeda killed your friend, but we're not going to say anything lest we disturb the peace and make them angier."
145, 147 - your simplistic view of the world is precious. I'm talking about being nice to Europe and China, not Al Qaeda. You can't possibly believe that Barry means to appease or otherwise be soft on more nefarious states such as Iran because he's willing to talk to thier leadership. That's Limbaugh mouth-breather territory.
The only difference between a GOP president and a Dem president on Iran is talk. Neither would ever attack Iran short of a missle strike on Israel or ground invasion of a neighboring country. In that case, Barry would act in the same manner as [instert your favor warmongering GOP candidate/ex-president].
Grow up children.
oo, oo, "children" - buuuurrrrn.
"You can't possibly believe that Barry means to appease or otherwise be soft on more nefarious states such as Iran because he's willing to talk to thier leadership."
It's what anybody believes he's willing to do, it's what he's doing. He is appeasing and being soft on Iran and the Taliban. Iran is treating him like a wuss, it purposefully scheduled talks one day after his hard and fast deadline just to piss on him, they insisted they won't talk about the one thing he wants to talk about, they murder and rape their own people in the streets and he, again, has to be guilted into eventually criticizing them (after he spent a few days mulling whether this might maybe warrant no longer inviting them for a 4th of July barbecue).
As for the Taliban, his administration has now put out feelers that that group isn't strictly the enemy and has toyed around with pulling the bulk of the forces back in order to merely focus on hit and run operations and leave the country to fend for itself. The guy spoke with his lead commander in Afghanistan once during his first 70 days on the job and apparently only spoke with him again to berate him for speaking negatively about the whole situation publicly.
Obama is an unserious and soft man who's more interested in being a celebrity than in the job of President of the United States.
150 must be in the cabinet or CIA to know so much about Barak.
It's foolish to think that a GOP president would act any differently than Obama on Iran. Oh sure, McCain or Bush would TALK tough, but in the end nothing would be done to stop Iran from abusing their population as they have for decades. What would you have Obama do, other than threaten or at least stop talking to the countries you don't like? Air strike? Ground invasion? Sanctions?! God you people are dense.
"150 must be in the cabinet or CIA to know so much about Barak."
Or, maybe, I read newspapers and see what's been reported pretty much everywhere from the New York Times to CNN.
122: He never had her on the desk. I think it was the Lincoln Bedroom.
You might be thinking of Lewinsky, but a Nobel trumps that.

"It's foolish to think that a GOP president would act any differently than Obama on Iran. "
So Obama deserved the Nobel Prize because he's not George Bush...but everybody should quit ragging on him because he's acting just like George Bush.
I think it's telling that every liberal columnist at the Washington Post, and indeed the Editorial Staff itself, thinks this award was premature, undeserved and nakedly political. Even Obama's fans are embarrassed how far this cult of personality has gone. Ironically, Obama will be the victim of his own popularity because he is not magic; he has to live in the real world, and so far that has proved an insurmountable challenge for Obama's agenda. Just listen to the cries of "too soon!" when the Nobel Committee announced the award.
Just goes to show that the Obama camp doesn't actually care what he does - it's all about supporting the D ticket no matter what. Oh, and I guess about evaluating and rewarding people based purely on race rather than what they've actually done, which I guess is also in line with D ticket policy, so there you go.
Of course, once the Nobel committee stooped to giving the "Peace" price to avowed terrorist and mass murderer Yasser Arafat, they lost anything that remained of their credibility as anything other than a partisan political booster organization. (I guess terrorism and specifically targeted killing of noncombatants is consistent with the goal of peace as long as you're only killing Jews, right?)
Er, prize...
This is in response to 53 and 68
I am not an American, and I read the foreign press daily. Look at The Guardian, for example, for the typical view expressed abroad that Obama did not deserve this award.
