Mystery Meeting at Winston & Strawn

winston strawn.gifOn Monday there will be an “all associates” meeting at Winston & Strawn.

Any guesses as to what it might be about? Bonuses for this year? A move away from lockstep? Candid acknowledgement of recent stealth layoffs? Feel free to offer us your guesses, by email or in the comments.

UPDATE (10/12/09): We are gathering reports and will post about the meeting later (probably tomorrow morning). Based on preliminary reports, it was not a particularly exciting meeting, basically along the lines of a “state of the firm” talk.

If you would like to contribute information, please email us: tips at abovethelaw dot com (subject line: “Winston and Strawn”). Thanks.

Full memo after the jump.

How much does it suck to call a "mystery meeting" on a Monday and tell people on Friday? W&S associates will now have "fun" thinking and worrying about it all weekend . . . .

@ 8 & 9: you don't need to tell the associates about those on a conference call

That's funny. Winston never had call ins when my salary jumped from 125 to 175 in the course of two years. We just got a memo. It's odd they'd have this big meeting for pay decreases. They never, ever were the kind of place to have "meeting to discuss associates feelings" or whatever. They just issued a memo from the executive or compensation or whatever committee via a envelop market "private and confidential."

avatar

I suspect that the "background noise" will be the wailing and gnashing of teeth of the severed associates.

I got confirmation from a partner (actually, two, in the same room), that it is twofold:

1. Confirmation/dispelling rumors of merger activity

2. Headcount Reduction- TIming & Size (latter unclear)

3. Salary expectations & right-sizing for 2010

41 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, October 9, 2009 1:31 PM

I'm a former Winston associate (in-house now), and I can say that a meeting of this sort is highly atypical. Raises and benefits info is usually communicated via memo. Mergers and changes in leadership are read about in the media then communicated to associates via memo. Not sure what to make of this.

avatar
42 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, October 9, 2009 1:32 PM

WS is going to offer a new option for associates: 1/3 of their salary to go back to law school for three years. All associates must re-attend schools better than the schools they originally attended.

Undergraduate education programs are also available at $60,000/year to each associate for four years, unless they have a lot of AP credit from high school, then 3.

And I had this confirmed by fifteen partners, so it's official.

Other posters are right - Winston doesn't normally have big meetings to discuss stuff so this is unusual. No way it's good.

But who gives a shit that Monday is Columbus Day? That's not a real holiday. Any lawyer planning to take Columbus Day off deserves to be fired.

Earlier this year, Profit Sharing distributions were deferred for all employees eligible with the expectation that it would be released mid October, 2009.

Health benefits were cut at the end of last year for anyone making over $100,000.

Dispell rumors? Even with the Heller merger rumors in 2008, they handled the rumor defense via emails to the firm.

Stealth layoffs? They've been going on since the beginning of the year, across all departments. No one will talk if they're afraid of breaching their severance agreement or afraid of losing their jobs.

This leaves merger, massive layoff, salary modification, bonus deferrals, end of lock step, end of the billable hour, or someone left a mess in the bathroom.

I've checked the WSJ, Chicago Tribune, Twitter, etc. this afternoon. The only ones talking about possible layoffs at Winston are you guys on this site. I exchanged email with someone at Winston mid-afternoon today and our convo was "business as usual." In other words, no news is still no news.

If the proverbial shit hit the fan at W&S, why would not one person report it (via Iphone, personal email to ATL, etc.)? It makes no sense that 6 hours after the meeting went down, no one had the idea to alert/comment to ATL. I understand that ATL is run by a group of morons, but the lack of a comment on any comment page today about it should be telling enough that nothing severe happened. This has to be the only explanation. If something really bad went down, but everyone wanted to cover it up, wouldn't someone just make something up in the comments to quiet the inquiry?

We are gathering reports and will post about the meeting later (probably tomorrow morning). Based on preliminary reports, it was not a particularly exciting meeting, basically along the lines of a "state of the firm" talk.

If you would like to contribute information, please email us: tips at abovethelaw dot com (subject line: "Winston and Strawn"). Thanks.

128 doesn't know what he is talking about. If he did exchange an email with someone at winston, why wouldn't he ask, "what happened this morning?" The truth is that he didn't get any specifics if the email correspondence even happened at all.

126/131,

Dude, I don't work at W&S. Just giving an opinion as to what happened. Sounds like Lat has no idea about it as well.

Lat's right. It was not a very momentous meeting.

The firm did admit earlier layoffs, but it did not offer numbers / details.

No news is good news so everyone at W&S is probably safe.

ATL is always late on reporting news.

I work for Winston & Strawn. I knew Winston & Strawn, Winston & Strawn was a friend of mine. Lat, you are no Winston & Strawn.

But seriously, we had a partners meeting last week at 8 fucking am West Coast time. It was a non-event, just like the associates meeting was. We are close to projections, we need to collect, recruitment is scaled down but we are committed to the summer program. Essentially the same stuff we hear every year.
