Last in Kash. First in peace.
i couldn't find lat's pic in the link.
I think Lat might have been trying to pose as Elie and forgot to change his name
I'm confused. Is this a Lat post or an Elie post? Elie is the one on the Root 100 list.
Congrats Elie!
WHERE is JaKe?
he should have done it messier.
Nice one Elie
Is Soledad O'Brien even black?
"the woman and 7-year-old boy who saw him naked apparently had cut through Williamson's front yard from a nearby path"
i didn't know i could get arrested if people trespassed on my property and saw me naked in the privacy of my home
Well done, Elie, that's pretty cool.
Wow...flunking the NY bar, getting pushed out of Biglaw and having to settle for a job as a race baiting idealogue blogger vaults you into the top 100 blacks in the country? That's a pretty powerful statement about how low the standards are.
Congrats Elie!
and L-O-F'ING L at the blackwater attorneys demanding security! Why doesn't their client provide the security? It was good enough for the US Government at some point!
I really wish I had become a pimp or a schoolyard drug dealer or just a truck stop toilet male whore instead of becoming a lawyer. It's so much more embarrassing to be lumped in with the likes of Blackwater's defense team than with Huggy Bear.
It may or may not be interesting that you are on some random list on a semi visible website - I really hope they did not take your input on the profile because ATL is certainly not "your" website
Dude needs to file a lawsuit against the mom for tresspass. It was a little unclear on the boundaries of the property from the news story, but assuming she stepped one foot on his property then she committed a tresspass. He just needs to tally up the damages. One year in prison and $2000 fine (if convicted), plus legal fees would be some hefty damages.
"This guy’s obsessive running could be why he’s “of counsel” instead of a partner."
Isn't this an appropriate place for Elie's "fat camp" picture?
Dude runs 70-80 miles a week. That's pretty standard for someone who races marathons for a hobby. I know a ton of lawyers who do that.
When I was a BIGLAW associate in 2005-06 (left in 2007 for a cushy government job), I trained for two marathons (both around 3:00) with about that sort of mileage. The secret is combining the commute with running -- I'd run 60-90 minutes in the morning, but since I ended up at the office and the commute usually took 30 minutes anyway, it was only 30-60 minutes out of my day. Then a long run (2-3 hours) 3 weekends a month. It's really not too bad.
Seriously the next post better be about Lat's public hissy fit yesterday.
12 - At least Elie gets paid to post silly shit on the internet. You do it for free.
15 - He is the editor of the web site. It doesn't say "founder." If someone said John's Facebook page it doesn't mean John owns or founded Facebook but he is still responsible for the content on "his" page.
Not Elie's Mom
Congrats. But to be fair, Tyler Perry is on that list.
19-
I make a lot more money than Elie does.
-12
Elie's job inspires envy in all of us.
Who is this "Ms. Tal" that I keep hearing so much about? Is she related to Ms. Lat perchance?
Tyler Perry presents the Root 100, a Tyler Perry-featuring Tyler Perry collaboration, with appearance by Elie Mystal.
Congrats, Elie.
Congratulations, Elie. And welcome back, especially.
As a side note: it's really, tremendously bizarre that there was misspelled word in one of your quotes in the Herald, and then a missing comma in your quote in The Root 100. I mean this seriously: the whole business is endearing.
Again, huge congratulations.
Malaise is the perfect word to describe things under the Nouveau Carter administration.
creepy:
In death Levy was, as in life, sending messages of encouragement to those he loved and the first to share news. For those who e-mailed him the morning of April 30 after word spread that someone, yet unidentified, had committed suicide in the office, he replied with an out-of-office automated message: “As of April 30, 2009, I can no longer be reached. If your message relates to a firm matter, please contact my secretary. ... If it concerns a personal matter, please contact my wife. ... Thanks.”
"The ROOT 100 recognizes emerging and established African-American leaders who are making extraordinary contributions. The ROOT 100 celebrates leadership, creativity, service, and, above all, excellence."
Does ATL count as an "extraordinary contribution" to the world? And how many typos disqualify one from "excellence"?
Sorry, any racial-separatist entity is going to get some hate from me.
-- Believer in equality
9, Soledad's mom was/is "Afro-Cuban."
Elie, I thought you had gotten fired after Lat's twitter tirade.
elie in the top 100? the state of black America is truly pitiful
The Mark Levy piece should be required reading. Folks, the takeaway -- or maybe just one takeaway -- is to get a hobby, or something -- anything to keep yourself from getting entirely wrapped up in, consumed by, and becoming your job. Doesn't matter if it's running, rock climbing, golfing, knitting, or a more typically nerdy hobby like stamp collecting or a book club, find something.
Did get Elie get a URM bonus to get into Root 100?
Ms. Mystal
Congrats on your award. Please continue to attempt to relieve me of my hefty loan obligations. As it stands right now, it appears the only way I will be able to purchase a home is to sue my brother for my parents home upon their death. It seems pretty shitty to have to screw family just to get a home, but the law is making me a shitty person. I need to get out. I need a clean financial slate.
That Blackwater article deserves its own post. So many issues. And pure naivete to think the USGOV could protect those lawyers fumbling around the streets of Baghdad. Hell, the State Dep't outsourced its FP in Iraq to Blackwater in the first place.
The person (singular) behind the "we love Elie" campaign needs to be a little less obvious about it.
Looking at the Root list, I couldn't find Justice Clarence Thomas, Walter Williams or Thomas Sowell. I wonder why that is, is it possible that the list is awarded only to people with the right politics?
Lat v. Elie = Lat trolling
38, is that you Michael Steele?
I'm white, but I've never been more embarrassed for black people. A semi-literate race-baiting blogger is one of your top 100 emerging leaders? Figures. Keep fighting the good fight!
I see that the anti-African-American bigots are out in force within the comments section. To them, Elie Mystal will always be unworthy. Elie Mystal's posts aren't race-baiting at all. He was actually quite even-handed when he live-blogged the NYC mayoral debate recently on True/Slant, and he even came out solidly for the white Jewish incumbent, Mayor Bloomberg. Many of David Lat's posts deal with the law and LGBT issues; likewise, some of Elie Mystal's posts deal with the law and race. It's just one of many of their interests. I suspect that respondent 22 may be right: many respondents simply seem envious of Elie Mystal's job and accomplishments, and hell-bent on exposing his every error no matter how trivial or small to relentlessly undermine him and the site. I hope David Lat isn't foolish enough to listen to this hype. He should recall the terrible homophobia unleashed against him in the comments section and realize that filthy, bigoted trolls will bicker under the bridge forever (unless one bans repeated offenders). Typos are easily corrected. I find them in David Lat and Kashmir Hill's posts too but only Elie Mystal seems to be edited in the comments section. Elie Mystal's entertaining, sardonic, wry perspective remains a vital part of the ATL website. David Lat was wise to hire him. I hope to keep reading his posts for the next several years.
There has been a plagiarism scanner for years and years. It is found at turnitin.com and most undergrads and high schools use it.
I just want to wish Justice Ginsburg good luck- we're all counting on her.
42, agreed. The bad part is that the comments mirror reality, in that most lawyers/law students I have interacted with have a similar worldview. It is a big part of why I know I can only do this but for so long.
I'm so sick of these ghastly thin, Ichabod Crane-looking marathon runners. BFD..and yes they're so obsessed, everything else is crowded out so they can fixate on it. Need to run more miles tomorrow...I shouldn't have eaten that banana...I put on 8 oz since yesterday..that will cost me .5 sec on that 10k....
what is this twitter tirade people keep talking about? i am pathetically now curious what was said.
