Reality TV To Invade A Law Firm and Law School in New York
The drama of law is captured daily here at Above The Law, and has been serialized in various television shows (See ‘Law and Order,’ ‘Ally McBeal,’ and ‘The Practice’). Now a reality TV producer wants to get in on the magic. From the Hollywood Reporter:
Scott Sternberg Prods. is partnering with Weinberger Media to produce “Legal Ease,” featuring the New York law firm of Tacopina Seigel & Turano. The daily reality show will revolve around lawyers giving advice to everyday people. Stories will be shot on location, and advice will be dished out in-studio by Joseph Tacopina, head of the firm, and a panel of legal eagles.
“Legal Ease” could attract a serious audience — it would have free legal advice after all. We imagine it as the legal version of the show, The Doctors, where four real-life doctors get together and talk medicine. That “medical dream team” is anchored by Dr. Hottie, Travis Stork, former star of The Bachelor.
Unfortunately, Joseph Tacopina is not as hot as Stork. To develop a loyal audience, we think the “Legal Ease” creators should consider recruiting a hot Biglaw reality TV star. They might benefit from a look at our archives. Might we suggest Bachelorette star Jeremy Anderson, Survivor star Charlie Herschel, or Amazing Race siblings Victor and Tammy Jih?
Meanwhile, a law school in New York is mulling a star turn on an MTV reality TV show. See which law school is under consideration after the jump, and find out why its law students are opposed to the idea.
Cardozo Law School is considering starring in an MTV reality TV show. From a tipster:
The administration at the Cardozo School of Law [held] an informational meeting today with television producers who are interested in filming a reality television show at the school. Various student leaders (EICs of the Law Review, the school newspaper, the SBA) are attending the meeting along with faculty and administration. The show is rumored to be something like MTV’s True Life series, which documents the “true life” experiences of the subjects. The school did not inform the general student body, many of whom are very upset with the prospect of putting the school on television since the school is not very well known now, and introducing it to the world at large via an MTV vehicle could have serious consequences on how its perceived.
Cardozo is trying to get a consensus via Twitter:
Reality or documentary tv show? Students say no. Tell us what you think.
Sadly, Cardozo’s Twitter following numbers only 263 as of this writing. We’ll help them out by doing a poll here. Should Cardozo invite MTV’s cameras?

What... EVER.
fURst to generously offer a mustache ride to the readers of this blog.
"The daily reality show will revolve around lawyers giving advice to everyday people."
So much for the attorney-client privilege. And I'm sure it will be reeeealy scintillating.
Where do I sign up? I think they'd benefit from both my acting skills and legal knowledge. Plus my brother was on the Bachelor, so I'm pretty much the perfect candidate.
4 - privilege can be waived.
I'd rather get a blank stare than "Oh, the MTV law school" when telling someone where I attend/got my degree.
7 - do you think HLS cares about its association with Legally Blonde?
5- I assume your query "where do I sign up?" was in reference to the "mustache ride" offer. (plus, you ain't funny.)
I didnt go to Brooklyn Law School because I was afraid people would confuse it with the "Brooklyn Academy of Law" that Vincent LaGuardia Gambini went to in My Cousin Vinny
9: Clearly you've never seen Kangaroo Jack.
many schools have become household names because of their sports teams, why shouldn't cardozo enjoy some name recognition based on a reality show?
Dont people go to NYLS because they hope that if when they tell people they go to "New York" that the listeners will assume they mean NYU???
11- Mustache-ride. Now!
I suppose that I should know the answer to this, but is the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law of Yeshiva University accredited by the American Bar Association and a member in good standing of the Association of American Law Schools?
Comment removed by moderator.
16-Did Kash get a new hairdo?
Yeah she used to be auburn haired. Blond looks hot on her.
Cardozo and MTV deserve each other.
I wonder if any of the people cracking wise will ever be 10% succesful as Tacopina?
Dave Johnston just announced that he will fund a non-Kosher craft services table while they are taping.
Elie, I think there's a misspelling in the name of the firm, the actual name is:
Tacopina Tiegel & Turano.
You really should check these things before you post.
Good lord 16. Didn't need that.
if i went to cardozo, i think i'd be most worried that MTV will expose the best shitting bathrooms in the school, thus increasing the chance that an "invader" will shit in the next stall while you quietly hate that person who has just ruined your bowel movement.
(btw, 11th floor)
sorry!
- non cardozo ny lawyer/frequent cardozo guest
6- I suspect that is 4's point--that by disclosing AC communications on the show the clients will have waived the privilege.
FU 16, this is the second time today I've fallen for this.
"Pathetic" is the first word that comes to mind. Reality TV jumped the shark four years ago.
16, some of us are at work. A NSFW warning would have been nice.
Seriously 16. Agree with 28. We didn't all go to Latham.
Why are you reading ATL on your employer's dime?
To think of all the firms who unwittingly sponsor this site.
16 - FAIL for not knowing that kimchee is a Korean, not a Filipino food.
30
How is it your employer's dime? Are you billing for the time on ATL? I don't bill for it, thus who gives a shit. I get paid to bill, and if I don't then I'm gone, whether I spent my idle time on ATL or on the shitter.
I was thinking more along the lines of Stanford University law school graduate Cristina Warthen.
"I get paid to bill, and if I don't then I'm gone, whether I spent my idle time on ATL or on the shitter. "
wtf is that supposed to mean 32?
Here is my thought process during the jump, "please don't be my law school, please don't be my law school, please don't be, YES!!!"
Fuck you Dozoclowns
-Fordham 2L extremely insecure.
P.S. the fact 'dozo is holding a meeting about this should automatically send them to 4th toiletier status.
still beat you in bar passage fordham.
What malpractice insurer is insuring these donkeys?
Bad idea jeans.
"What is a cardozo?" You know what Kash- go fuck yourself. I may not have NYU law on my resume but then again unlike you, I am actually a practicing lawyer.
Seriously, an NYU law degree for you = waste-o-time.
this is probably a good idea. dozo is the bomb.
35- you don't go to columbia. shut up. fordham will be ttt soon enough, just wait honey
+1 to 38
new york is full of haters.
Long Live the Mighty Cardozo. East Syde!
+2 to 38 in theory, but I don't really give a shit what Kash thinks about Cardozo. Kash is a bit of a parasite type chick (see, e.g., the way she mooches off of Lat in her fag hag role) without much talent other than the fact that she has tits, a vagina and an age south of 25, and she's got a pretty high opinion of herself. I would care what Kash thought about the latest Miley Cyrus movie, but I don't care what she thinks about law schools.
i would watch the show.
Don't go dragging the good name of Miley Cyrus into this.
'dozo has been a law school for only 30 years and risen to 49 on the USnews list already. i can assure you whatever they do will be in the school's best interest.
How about a reality show covering the lives of deferred and laid-off associates? That would be a great one.
CAAAAAAAARRRRDOOOOOOOZOOOOOOO
hey atleast cardozo is trying. most law schools sit on their ass and wait for their rank to go up. oh, and fuck fordham...losers
While I would like to think this would be a good idea, and it could even have the possibility of helping get students jobs, etc. That thought only lasts for about 5 seconds until I realize how many idiots there are at law school and how it would turn into an absolute shit show in about 5 minutes.
I think for the legal advice show they should recruit Ozzie Osmond. He could tell them what he thinks they should do, and then the lawyer can give legal advice, It would rock.
If Cardozo is actually going to do this, why on earth would it do it on MTV?
While I think a reality TV show at a law school is probably a bad idea for the school no matter what, I can see how a law school reality show/documentary could be done tastefully. What I can't see see is how that tasteful show would ever be made by MTV.
Wait, scratch all that. This is a great idea. Once all the middle schoolers out there see how impossible it is to get a job coming out of non-T14 school nobody will ever want to grow to be a lawyer again. Goodbye over supply problem (or at least goodbye oversupply 10-15 years from now....).
Mystal,
I am entering you in the next season of Ace of Cakes. You will win the competition with a cake that is made to be an exact replica of a Walrus.
David Lat
law schools are publicity whores. the rest are jealous
Very bad idea
Totally inappropriate for a law school
42 nailed it.
Listen up ATL... this is FUCKING WEAK... how can you just sweep Lat's public online hissy fit tirade against Elie under the rug as if it didn't happen. If that happened at any other place, even remotely connected to something legal it would have been the numero uno story of the day. You are a FUCKING HYPOCRITE, Lat. Do a post about what happened yesterday. Air your dirty lawndry.
51 FTW
Serious question for 32 - must one stop the billing clock when one goes to take a leak, or only for #2?
-Curious 3L
42--Why would you care what Kash thinks of Miley Cyrus?
FWIW, I like her posts. And, stop the hating. We had a little scare this morning that we'd lost Elie. Let's not drive Kash away. Her posts are a fun distraction from work.
okay, with all the comments about 16, I'm dying to know what he or she said - a Latham-esque comment unanimously needing moderation with a kimchi reference apparently as a slight to Philippines, evoking a question of Kash's current hair status? What did 16 write!?!?!?!
I have never supported anything more than I support this right now.
"What's a Cardozo? This fall, MTV will show you."
Jesus Christ Cardozo Administration! Are you all so secure in your ranking, your finances, your scholarship, your students, that you have time to waste even thinking about a reality tv show? I sure hope all your graduates have jobs; otherwise, it looks like your focus is misplaced. Run a quality law school or get publicity, which is more important?
what a useless post
When prospective students learn that the greatest thing that ever happened at this shit hole school is that a couple of students threw a few bucks at a couple of pizzas so they dont have to eat kosher crap, applications will decline.
Why would law school stories appeal to high school MTV viewers? And why Cardozo of all places? Not all will this show fail, but it will drag down what little reputation the school has with it.
If the show about practicing law resembles anything close to reality, it should be a snooze fest. Who wants to watch people read cases, draft briefs, and attend CMCs?
I was kinda hoping it'd be CLS... TV revenue= free plastic ware. it's not like TV cameras are that different from events at JG/International School. at my UG there were TV vans parked 24/7 just in case some story broke out!
KASH,
IF I FLY YOU TO CHICAGO CAN I TAKE YOU TO DINNER?
JUNIOR PARTNER
As if Cardozo didn't already attract enough knuckle-dragging 'tards, now they're reaching out to the MTV audience. This school must genuinely hate intelligence.
HEY LEAVE US ALONE....MADOFF RIPPED US OFF!
Has the school not gotten enough bad press recently?
Or was Yeshiva's endowment hit from Madoff worse than mentioned?
I suppose I should know the answer to this, but did glenn beck rape and murder a young girl in 1990?
http://www.glennbeckrapedandmurderedayounggirlin1990.com/
1) Why would anyone watch a tv show about law school life? Library drama? Bluebooking disputes?
2) Cardozo admin - Please don't do this. Some of us alums need to do things like lateral one day, or become partner, etc. and sometimes school cred plays a factor. The alums that you want coming back to the building to give talks, mentor students, etc. might not be so willing if we think we are going to be put on camera and edited to such an extent that we look like we don't know what we are doing, when some of us clearly do.
Sincerely,
a Cardozo alum that made it thru the recession unscathed, still on partnership track and asked by the school to come back frequently for events that benefit the current students
73,
You're thinking of Bob Saget.
And your mother.
Doesn't mtv usually ATTEMPT to cast attractive people? What could possibly be in this for them?
True Life: I'm a law student
Kash is still the hottest.
The public option should be reintroduced into the health care overhaul. It is now clear that a majority of the population favors the public option, and it will be an excellent way for the government to keep insurance companies honest.
And hopefully, one day, we'll have a completely public healthcare system, where one's ability to go to the hospital does not depend so entirely on that person's wealth. Where the health of one's children need not be weighed against one's income, or the ability to pay their mortgage.
I believe that healthcare is a right for all...
This is a worse idea than firing bottle rockets out of your butt crack after taking a gasoline enema.
BREAKING NEWS IN RACISM
MSNBC anchor Contessa Brewer referred to Jesse Jackson as Al Sharpton.
Clearly this is because she thinks that all black people look alike.
Elie
We need an immediate, and very angry, race baiting post.
82
You are very right. Contessa Brewer is a biggot who must be stopped. She is clearly a racist in this clip.

True life series on mtv is awesome. There is always a hook though e.g. "True life: I'm a dyslexic law student".
Loquitur ipsa res. It love I!
I thought Kash didn't go to law school.
And this is the dumbest idea I've ever heard.
Oh no! What is going to happen when MTV workers bring non-kosher food in?
If only there was a student brave enough to sponsor a non-kosher pizza party for all participants...
I wonder if there's a way to identify each of you so I can blacklist you from my firm.
It's PUSSY FART time - bitches, let 'em RIP!!
Seriously, they couldnt get a more reputable firm ? I bet Tacopina wrote in suggesting this, mayhaps to get free press for the firm.
88 - a yarmulke is probably a pretty good tell
Cardozo 3L here -- This is the WORST IDEA EVER.
I can't believe the administration would even meet to discuss a show like this. The legal world is ridiculously conservative. The fact that the administration met with these people is already really bad publicity.
I got an offer from my firm, but there are so many 3Ls that have no idea what they are going to do. The school should be focusing its attention on finding jobs for these students and further buidling the school's reputation.
.
This is mamash a geshmak idea. It would provide the gantzeh oilum with a glimpse of the gevaldikeh shaklah vetareyah that shtels tzu between the bochurim and rebbeim at Cardozo. It could also be good for the students' shidduch prospects.
84/63:
I'm pretty sure those at 'dozo don't care much for Jesus Christ.
93- i'm a MOT and have no idea what the hell your comments means. Try English next time- I hear it's the universal language.
Law school is a compelling reality tv setting: 1L year features all the bitching, back stabbing, hook ups and other typical reality tv fodder -- add the super-competitive atmosphere, high percentage of narcissistic douches and fact that all lawyers are hams who love to hear themselves talk (can you imagine the asinine things those asses would say in those testimonials!) and you've got a good show.
From a tv perspective, this makes perfect sense.
93- well done. Yasher Koach.
What this crap have to do with law anyway? This brog nothing but a crap now. Too gay. Too stupid. David, you need come home this weekend, meet nice Filipino girl through matchmaker, I introduce you, ok? Then maybe your head get un-gayed, not so crazy no more. I make you your favorite rice cake soup too, just for you, then maybe you have energy, brog better.
- Mom
@92 - WORST IDEA EVER was you deciding to go to Cardozo
99- you're a gimp. STFU
93- if you want to be more accepted by society, then i wholly disagree with your comment. Seriously, it's not 1889 on the LES no more! Get with the times.

Dear students,
I know that there are rumors circulating about Cardozo’s possible participation in a reality TV show. Before the rumor mill takes over, I thought I would set the record straight. Cardozo was approached by producers considering a reality television project based at a law school. A group of administrators, faculty and students met with the producers to hear their proposal yesterday. The consensus of those who met with the producers was that Cardozo should not participate in such a project and, as far as I am concerned, that is really the end of the matter. Publicity given to the fact of the meeting has apparently led to rumors that far exceed the “reality” of the situation. I hope this lays to rest any concerns about the subject.
Best,
Matthew Diller
Dean and Professor of Law
99 and 104 -- you two are probably no-offered or rescinded sad pathetic losers -- mad that a Dozo student stole your spot. haha!
Am I the only one that laughs like a little girl whenever MrsLat posts?
We hired a Cardozo grad this year - he failed the bar - Next year we will higher from a higher ranked law school like the University of Utah
What does Jake Meritus think of this? Also, 110 little typo in there buddy. I think you mean 'hire'
What does Jake Emeritus think of this? Also, 110 little typo in there buddy. I think you mean 'hire'
um 110- Cardozo has the third highest bar passage rate in NY. Enough with the "cardozo is a TTT" because frankly, that is not the reality. The facts speak for themselves.
And I was holding my breath to see all those hot Cardozo Orthodox female law students on reality tv.. Or, sorry, there aren't any.
Cardozo wouldn't be a good place for a reality TV show - my 1L year was good. People in my section helped each other out, shared outlines, and were generally nice to each other. Nothing like the stereotypical nightmare stories. MTV should do the show at one of the schools most of the ATL commenters come from . . . that would be more MTV-ish fare.
oh 115, you downer -- you just probably missed out on all the good stuff.
In NY we have several law schools --
NYU
Cornell
Colombia
Fordham
Hoffstra
NYLS
Cardozo
CARDOZO HAS THE THIRD HIGHEST BAR PASSAGE RATE IN NY.
Speaks for itself.
117, no one cares about the bar passage rate except a TTT like Cardozo. It is NOT hard to pass. Anyone who cares enough to study for 3 weeks passes.
#118 - If it's not hard to pass, then the bar passage rates at schools other than Cardozo (and those schools with higher pass rates) is even more pathetic and inexcusable. Really excellent argument there. God forbid you ever intend to argue in court...
#110 - If your comment is true, and I suspect it isn't, then you and your employer should also be embarrassed for hiring such dreck. You probably shouldn't brag about your employer taking low calibre individuals.
"Cardozo has a higher bar pass rate than Fordham..." Isn't that kind of like celebrating getting a gold medal at the special olympics?
117- you misspelled Columbia and Hofstra and forgot Brooklyn, Pace, Touro, Albany, Syracuse, St. John's, CUNY and SUNY. God forbid you ever intend to file a brief or motion in court with misspellings and omissions.
Stop beating up on old Benjamin!
Cardozo is well on its way to becoming a top ten school.
Cardozo graduates have almost no issues getting jobs. They are very successful in finding jobs in areas that interest them. Almost 95% were employed within 6 months. And well paying to boot.
The numbers do not lie!
Not pulling this out of my tuchis..

William A. Kennedy-Las Vegas Lawyer
it does not matter to me whether the host of this TV show is a TV star what is important is that the host is competence and is an authority on the subject in order to uphold the integrity of the law profession and will not apear too commercialized
William Kennedy would like to make a correction on the spelling of the word competence - it must be competent thank you
