Bar Exam Results Open Thread: California Dreaming

california republic.jpgCalifornian bar takers are hoping to have something to be thankful for next Thursday. They get their bar exam results today at 6 p.m. PST.

Results are available to bar takers tonight and to the general public on Sunday at 6 a.m. PST.

Says one tipster who is not too confident:

California Bar Results come out at 6:00 pm pst today… counting down the hours until I found out I failed….

Releasing results on a Friday is a great idea. It means that the successful can live it up and the not-so-successful can drink themselves into a sad stupor. And everyone can sleep it off on Saturday morning.

Here’s an open thread for those who want a place to comment while chugging.

But seriously, if you can't pass the bar exam, you probably can't walk down the street w/o choking on your own tongue.

If you do not pass the bar on the first try, you have no business becoming a lawyer. You are also no Iron Eagle.

Check your results twice if it says you didn't pass. Last year two people told me they entered the wrong number because they were so nervous.

This would be significant if the bar was actually difficult or meaningful.

The pass rate is currently too high. And it should be a one-and-done opportunity. If you pass, great! You're a lawyer. If you fail, find a new profession.

Doug Masters didn't get into the Air Force Academy his first try, so don't worry. He just had to fly an F-16 into a Middle Eastern country and rescue his father from the evil, Colonel Nakir Nakesh, to get his second chance.

Bar results are no laughing matter. Last year, I was enjoying a cocktail at a patio bar in Santa Monica when a man showed up to meet his girlfriend at the table next to me. He informed her that he wanted to get drunk because he just found out he failed the bar. She said something snide and giggled. Bad move. All of a sudden, he grabbed her arms and pushed her back flat on the table. She screamed and spit in his face. This caused him to actually grab her forehead and start slamming the back of her head into the table. She was bleeding profusely as her body went limp. At this point, I had to do something so I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said 'fresh' and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I can say this cab is rare but I thought 'Now forget it' - 'Yo homes to Bel Air'

I got my bar result today, and I passed. For some reason, in this economy I just didn't feel like celebrating, as I don't have a job yet. My best friend from law school came over and wanted to celebrate as we both passed. He however, does have a job. He noticed that I wasn't a jubilant as him. He asked me whether I cared if I passed the bar. Do I care? I informed him to look at me when I talk to you boy! I've given fucking 22 years of my life to this country! 22 years! I've seen boys blown out of the air over the pacific, their guts strewn out over rice paddies in Vietnam! Don't question me when I say I give a shit!

Well today I PASSED THE CA BAR after 6 tries. I did it, Pops. I f'ing did it, Pops. He told me "AVENGE ME, AVENGE ME." I did it today.

I'm curious to hear how many people drank before the results came out. When I passed many years ago, I had a flask of jack, a one liter bottle of coke and I was three sheets to the wind and on my friggen knees when I clicked the mouse to see if my name popped up. I remember it like it was yesterday. I can't decide if it was more jubilation or relief. Probably both. But in any event, how drunk did other people get beforehand? I can't imagine checking the website sober. PS. When I passed, I had one of the best song ever queued up on the stereo. And it goes a little somethin' like this.....

Yeah, this album is dedicated to all the teachers that told me
I'd never amount to nothin', to all the people that lived above the
buildings that I was hustlin' in front of that called the police on
me when I was just tryin' to make some money to feed my daughters,
and all the niggaz in the struggle, you know what I'm sayin'?

Uh-ha, it's all good baby bay-bee, uh

For those of who havent heard about PE yet, he died at Rick's Cabaret a few nights back after a massive heart attack. The funeral service was touching. Jake was a mess.

The worst of it though is that PE apparently depleted the family fortune and left a huge mountain of debt behind - no doubt from a result of his penchant for deviant sexual escapades and his susceptibility to pyramid schemes.

It appears that the status Jake has enjoyed for his entire life is gone. Even worse, PE's old firm has disavowed him after all of his misgivings came to light. As such, Jake no longer has an outstanding offer at his father's preeminent peer law firm. TImes is tough.

Incidentally, Jake has his Torts exam next Thursday.

This is Partner Emeritus' personal physician. Rumors of Partner Emeritus' death are nothing more than rumors. While he was at Rick's Cabaret and did have a health incident occur at that establishment, the incident was not life threatening. Partner Emeritus has authorized me to inform the readers of this site that during a lap dance (performed by a lovely dancer from Estonia by the name of Ericka) he experienced a rupture of his prostate gland, which had previously been the subject of a surgical procedure. Partner Emeritus was immediately taken to a peer hospital where I performed the prostate replacement surgery. A strapping young man from Namibia was kind enough to donate his prostate to Partner Emeritus and the surgery was successful. We expect Partner Emeritus to be released from our institution in the near future.

That is all.

110- 72 here, sorry to hear it. I didn't even know that there were 2-yr 9th clerkships. I just came out of a one year one and passed. FWIW, I took NY a few years ago and found CA much harder (though NY has way more subjects). Good luck in NY!

111 here - thanks for your sympathy, but I'm seriously okay. I split with the NY/CA office of my firm, so I'm just gonna tell them I want New York. As far as a 2 year 9th circuit clerkship, I'm not sure how common they are,but I do know my judge usually only hires for one year - we just had a really good connection (from the same, small hometown and went to the same undergrad) and I was asked if I would be interested in staying two years.

STATE BAR ANNOUNCES RESULTS FOR JULY 2009 CALIFORNIA BAR EXAMINATION

MEDIA CONTACT: Diane Curtis 415-538-2028 diane.curtis@calbar.ca.gov

San Francisco, November 20, 2009 — The State Bar of California's Committee of Bar Examiners reported today that 56.4 percent of the applicants passed the July 2009 General Bar Examination (GBX). If the 4,888 people who passed the July 2009 exam satisfy other requirements for admission, they will become members of the State Bar.

Preliminary statistical analyses show that of the 8,667 applicants who took the GBX, 71.0 percent were first-time takers. The passing rate for 6,152 first-time applicants was 70.0 percent overall. The passing rate for the 2,515 applicants repeating the examination was 22.0 percent overall.

Preliminary statistical analyses show the first-time and repeater percent passing the GBX (rounded to whole numbers) by law school type as follows:

School Type First-Timers Repeaters

California ABA 79% 31%

Out-of-State ABA 69% 27%

CA (but not ABA) Accredited 32% 12%

Unaccredited:Fixed Facility 4% 10%

Unacredited:Correspondence/Distance Learning 32% 11%

All Others 44% 20%

All Applicants 70% 22%

The applicants not included in the above totals either were attorneys admitted in other states who either chose or were required to take the GBX, attorneys admitted in foreign jurisdictions, law students in the Law Office/Judge's Chambers Study Program or law students who qualified to take the GBX through four years of law study. More detailed statistics, including passing rates by individual law schools, will be made available in approximately four to six weeks and published on the State Bar's Web site at www.calbar.ca.gov/admissions.

The three-day General Bar Examination is given twice a year, in February and July. The exam consists of three sections: a multiple-choice Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), six essay questions and two performance tests that are designed to assess an applicant's ability to apply general legal knowledge to practical tasks. The mean scaled MBE score in California was 1462 compared with the national average of 1445.

In addition, the Committee announced that 107 (32.5 percent) of the 329 lawyers who took the Attorneys' Examination passed. The Attorneys' Examination, which consists of the essay and performance test sections of the GBX, is open to lawyers who have been admitted to the active practice of law in good standing for at least four years in another United States jurisdiction.

Successful applicants who have satisfied other requirements for admission - those who have not been reported by local district attorneys for being in arrears with family or child support payments, who have received a positive moral character determination and who have passed the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination - may either take the Attorney's Oath individually or participate in admissions ceremonies held throughout the state during December 2009.

114, you miserable little puke:

Some "sources" do, some sources don't. The fact that your source came up first on a search you crafted, doesn't make it right. Especially given that the second and third result on your own search side with me:

http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Fresh-Prince-of-Bel-Air-Theme-Song-lyrics-Will-Smith/79D7F72F139E21F248256CD9000EE5DA

http://www.elyrics.net/read/w/will-smith-lyrics/fresh-prince-of-bel,,Air-%28Theme-song%29-lyrics.html

More importantly, listen to the goddamn song yourself and it's freaking obvious. Then put the words in context and "nah" makes sense and "now" does not.

Now, get back in your little freaking hole and try and try and contemplate what a loser argument you just made and how it blew up in your face.

I'm trying to help someone fix something broken in his life, and you're just enabling him to continue on the wrong path. Thus, STFU.

For your information, I do not know one successful lawyer at my preeminent peer law firm who failed the bar. In fact, anyone to whom we extend an offer and subsequently fails the bar has their offer immediately rescinded. Wretches who failed this go-around: look for a new line of work.

It's always interesting to read that failing the bar exam "doesn't mean anything" and that it is "not a test of intelligence" when some law student going to a t20 law school fails the bar...................

but the LSAT, which they performed comparatively well on, is a completely accurate predictor of performance as a lawyer and the best way to gauge aptitude for law school...and if you don't score well on it you are an idiot.

Sorry, but you can't have it both ways.

avatar
144 Posted by guest | Permalink Saturday, November 21, 2009 3:54 PM

143

let me guess, TTT law student/grad?

thought so.

on the lsat everyone is gunning for the best score possible. otoh, for the bar people try to get away with the minimum.

of course the lsat stuff breaks down when people from poorer families typically don't have the same test prep resources. when we factor that in, lsat doesn't mean much in some cases. obviously it means more when comparing two people who've had the same education and preparation.

"on the lsat everyone is gunning for the best score possible. otoh, for the bar people try to get away with the minimum."

#144
True for the LSAT. However, I don't think people do the bare minimum to pass the bar exam. I think most rational people study hard for it and attempt to do as well as possible on the exam, just like the LSAT. People want to maximise their chances of passing the exam, and nobody wants to take a chance on it by coasting along.

The bar, like the LSAT, can be bombed by failure to prepare properly, lack of intelligence, nerves or a combination of all.

The problem with California is that there are different sets of graders for different groups of people for the CBX...in state ABAs get one group, out of state ABAs another, and so on. The integrity of this exam is very much open to debate (I passed mine). Would make a great Grisham novel.

Paralyzed student passes bar exam after long fight

Associated Press - November 21, 2009 8:44 PM ET

DAVIS, Calif. (AP) - A paralyzed University of California law student has passed the bar exam after a legal battle to take the test.

Sara Granda, a 29-year-old UC Davis law school graduate, says she received notice Friday that she had passed the State Bar of California.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger congratulated Granda on her achievement. "She is a fighter," he said in a statement Saturday.

Granda was initially denied the opportunity to take the exam because her $600 test fee was paid by a check from the state Department of Rehabilitation instead of Granda using a credit card online. She petitioned the California Supreme Court to take the test and the court granted her request.

Granda says she's interested in practicing health law and policy.

Behold America's Future

In January 2009, a man in his mid 50s named Johnnie Redding was found frozen in several feet of ice at the bottom of an elevator shaft in the Detroit Public School Warehouse (also known as the Roosevelt Warehouse). The River Rouge resident was discovered by some kids playing hockey on the floor in the basement which had flooded and frozen over. The police thought it was a hoax and never responded to the first call.

Apparently, the body had been just sitting in the bottom of the shaft for weeks. None of the numerous homeless people living inside the warehouse bothered to call the police. Even after the authorities were notified(multiple times), it was several days before anyone came out. It took a jackhammer to remove the body, who was later identified by his wallet.
http://detroitsghetto.blogspot.com/2009/11/man-found-frozen-in-ice-at-bottom-of.html

Officials say that Johnnie killed himself. His autopsy revealed no broken bones, no wounds and no water in his lungs, which means he did not fall into the flooded shaft and drown. Most likely, Johnnie was smoking cocaine with somebody and died, coroners suspect. Johnnie's party pal may have panicked and tossed his body down the water-filled shaft.
